‘It looks more like a big city and less like a stage,’ Florian Wieder explains. By Gil Kaufman Chris Brown performs at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Jeff Kravitz/Film Magic When you settled in on the couch at home on Sunday night to watch the 2011 Video Music Awards , it probably felt like you were going back to the future. As in years past, the main stage for the show was a visual spectacle. This year the theme was time travel, and the stage’s designer was intent on making you feel as if you were on a mind-tripping journey. “We met up half a year ago and [VMA Executive Producer Jesse Ignjatovic] came up with the idea to create a time tunnel,” explained VMA main stage production designer Florian Wieder of the psychedelic set that looked like a cross between an alien landing ship, the floor of a 1970s disco and the baddest midnight laser-light show ever. “That’s one of the reasons why the whole design is based on a tunnel that is right in the center of the stage.” Like the pre-show , which shared some of the same curvy, intergalactic whimsy, the main broadcast mixed undulating wave forms with bright, pop-art-style colors and a black and white theme to set the stage for a galaxy of performers, including Adele, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z and Kanye West, Beyonc

Emma Stone and company fend off ‘Colombiana’ and ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.’ By Ryan J. Downey Emma Stone in “The Help” Photo: DreamWorks “The Help” managed to fend off competition from a new action movie, a horror flick and a comedy as the overall box-office suffered from stormy weather on the East Coast. The adaptation of the popular novel took in another $14.3 million over the weekend to remain at number one with a $96.6 million total. The Box Office Top Five: 1. “The Help,” $14.3 million 2. “Colombiana” $10.3 million 3. “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” $8.6 million 4. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” $8.6 million 5. “Our Idiot Brother” $6.5 million Hurricane Irene certainly affected box-office receipts, according to studio estimates released Sunday. Ticket sales were down roughly 23 percent compared with the same period last year. AMC theaters closed all of its theaters in New York, Virginia, Philadelphia, Marlyand and D.C. while Clearview Cinemas and Regal Cinemas closed many locations as well, The Los Angeles Times reported. “The Help” has been in theaters for three weeks now and will certainly cross the $100 million mark domestically soon. Zoe Saldana, whose supporting turns in “Avatar” and “Star Trek” have made her a fan favorite, stars in “Colombiana,” the latest female driven action flick from Luc Besson. The filmmaker behind “Leon: The Professional” and “La Femme Nikita” served as co-writer and producer on the movie (it was directed Olivier Megaton), which has suffered from unfavorable reviews. The revenge-driven tale which stars Saldana as a drug dealer’s daughter turned assassin was #2 at the box office with a $10.3 million debut. “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” is another movie with a famous director as co-writer and producer. Guillermo del Toro told Comic-Con audiences that the original “Afraid…,” which was a television movie he saw as a kid, was one of the scariest things he’d ever seen. Katie Holmes stars in the creepy-house centered remake, which took in just $8.6 million in its debut to land at #3. “Our Idiot Brother” was the only of the weekend’s bigger new releases to receive mostly favorable reviews from critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes , but it opened with the worst box-office receipts. The Paul Rudd comedy earned just $6.5 million. This weekend’s new release schedule includes espionage thriller “The Debt.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Our Idiot Brother.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘We were all living vicariously through your characters,’ Luda gushes to actor Steven Bauer as Mixtape Daily looks on. By Rob Markman Ludacris and Steven Bauer Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Ludacris There is no shortage of “Scarface” references in hip-hop. From Brad Jordan ‘s rap moniker to the intro on Jay-Z’s now-classic debut, Reasonable Doubt, rappers have been putting their love for the 1983 film on full display since its release, and the movie’s actors have taken notice. Tony Montana himself, the legendary Al Pacino , expressed his appreciation for the hip-hop community on Tuesday night, right before a Los Angeles party in celebration of the upcoming Blu-ray release of the movie. “They really get it and they understand it, and that’s a great thing. They’ve been very supportive all these years. I think they’ve helped us tremendously,” Pacino told MTV News. And Pacino isn’t alone, as his co-star Steven Bauer, who played Montana’s best friend Manny “Manolo” Ribera, crashed MTV News’ red carpet interview with Ludacris just to introduce himself and show love to the rapper. “You know what? You’re responsible. You and everybody that came before you brought ‘Scarface’ to [the] mainstream,” Bauer told Luda after exchanging pleasantries. “We were dead in the water, we were forgotten and we were lepers.” The film was panned by critics after its theatrical release and the over-the-top violence proved to be too much for mainstream America at the time. But “Scarface” eventually became a cult-classic, and the rap community had a lot to do with it. “We were all living vicariously through your characters,” ‘Cris told Bauer of the flick’s hip-hop appeal. “As the whole rap community, we definitely support.” There was clearly mutual admiration between Luda and Bauer, as the veteran actor jokingly told the MC that he had “ho’s in different area codes,” making a reference to Luda’s 2001 hit single. After the exchange, Luda gushed about his favorite “Scarface” scene. “Say hello to my little friend,” he said, referencing the climactic death scene where Montana’s home is invaded by rival drug lord Alejandro Sosa’s assassins. “That is definitely my best line and best part of the movie, because he just went out in a blaze of glory, man. If you gonna go out, that’s how you go out.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists Ludacris

We unpacked vintage footage, including the ‘One in a Million’ singer’s 2001 MTV ‘Diary’ episode. By Rebecca Thomas Aaliyah in 2001 Photo: Evan Agostini/Getty Images In pop music, five years between albums can seem like 500. But on the eve of the release of her self-titled third LP on July 17, 2001, Aaliyah — with two multiplatinum discs nailed to her wall and a fawning fanbase patiently waiting on her — had her stilettos firmly planted in the pop-cultural soil; the 22-year-old’s grip on the game had only grown tighter since 1996’s sophomore smash, One in a Million. So that summer, the New York-born, Detroit-bred beauty took off on a dizzying promotional run for what she called her “most personal album” (“I’m hoping that people really feel me on this one,” she told MTV in an interview). Among the to-do’s dotting her datebook were in-store CD signings with fans, photo shoots for glossy fashion mags, appearances on shows like “Live With Regis and Kelly,” presenting with Diddy at the ’01 MTV Movie Awards and jet-lagged trips abroad to meet with foreign press. And MTV was there capturing it all for a special episode of the artist-narrated documentary series “Diary.” “I am truly blessed to wake up every morning and do something that I love. There’s nothing better than that,” she says in the epi. From age 15, when she dropped her 1994 debut, the mature-beyond-her-years Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number, Aaliyah had gotten to do exactly what she loved, as the bandana-rocking tomboy teen blossomed into a bewitching triple threat. While her untimely death, 10 years ago on Thursday (August 25) in a Bahamas plane crash , ended a bursting-at-the-seams career, fans still hum her infectious tunes , ape her slinky choreography and swoon over the catalog of stunning visuals she left behind. Rather than dwell on the loss, MTV News went digging in our vast store of beta tapes and turned up some choice on-air interviews with her (click the embedded video to see for yourself). “Everything is worth it,” she says of her success, on “Diary.” “The hard work, the times when you’re tired, the times when you’re a bit sad. In the end, it’s all worth it because it really makes me happy.” The year before she dropped Aaliyah, her sultry recording of the Timbaland-produced “Try Again,” from the soundtrack for her feature-film debut “Romeo Must Die,” netted her a Grammy and a Video Music Award, among other accolades. By 2001, Hollywood was fully on notice, sending her scripts, which led to roles like a high-profile part in the “Matrix” sequels . “I’m a bit of a perfectionist and I’m also a bit of a workaholic and I want everything to be perfect,” she adds after a grueling rehearsal with her dancers. But it wasn’t all work, no play. Baby Girl, as frequent collaborator Missy Elliott and others affectionately called her, could be as goofy as the next girl. Backstage in another scene, with little prodding from hairstylist Eric Foreman (donning a lopsided wig), Aaliyah begins to harmonize to the Ashford & Simpson soul classic “Solid.” Gripping her toy-store mic, she can barely keep it together before collapsing into laughter. While she had largely evaded the kind of scandal that can trip up other young pop stars, A was reflective, too, about success. “The best way to deal with fame is to have that personal life,” she says at another point. That meant spending good time with her ever-present “glam squad,” family, friends and then-boyfriend Damon Dash , the onetime Roc-a-Fella mogul. In the end though, Aaliyah had a central purpose, one that probably helps explain her enduring legacy. “It’s all for the fans, it’s so they know you and they can get into you,” she says after a stream of alternately crying and screaming admirers pack an FYE record store to meet her. “Not just your music but to you as a person; it’s something that’s totally necessary.” Share your memories of Aaliyah in the comments section.
