In “Attack The Block” Aliens Invade “The Hood” (For A Change)

Read the original post:

Tomorrow will see the nationwide release of one of this summer’s most anticipated movies – J.J. Abrams’ alleged homage to Steven Spielberg of old, Super 8 . The film centers on a group of white kids in a small Ohio town in the 1970s whose adventures into film-making with their Super 8mm camera are interrupted by a train crash carrying an alien life form. Naturally, chaos reigns in the aftermath. But there’s another “alien attacks” movie also centered on a group of kids coming soon to a theater near you (hopefully) that you may not yet be aware of, but really should be. And this one is of special importance because its story features that rare onscreen occurrence in which the alien, or aliens in this case, invade a predominantly urban (read: black) neighborhood. The film’s tag line, which you can read on the poster above, says it all: “ INNER CITY VS OUTER SPACE. ” Or, as I like to refer to it: the “ Aliens attack da hood ” project. For once, right? They almost never do! And the often vilified, bureaucratically-victimized young black boys and girls who live in “da hood” actually save the day for a change! It all sounds quite revolutionary, doesn’t it? Sarcasm aside, the film I’m talking about is a British-produced horror movie titled Attack The Block , brought to you by the producers of the hilarious zombie spoof Shaun Of The Dead , and the not-so hilarious graphic novel adaption of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World . The movie, in brief, pits a group of mostly black kids against an invasion of alien monsters, turning a an inner city London tower block into a fortress under siege, and a ragtag group of armed teenagers into heroes. Since its North American debut at the South by Southwest Film Festival this past March in Austin, Texas the critical and commercial buzz around the movie has been near-deafening. It was released in the UK last month and although it has a North American distributor, an official release date for those of us on this side of the Atlantic has yet to be announced. Given all that I’ve heard and read about the movie (from film critics and general audiences) it sounds like perfect summer fare – an exceptional combination of spectacle and story. You’ll get the thrills and chills, but also plenty of heart. Here’s a small sample: From Variety : “… enormously appealing debut feature, “Attack the Block”… Pitched as “inner city vs. outer space,” pic sees a quintet of teen street hoodlums defend their tower-block home in the projects from an invasion of shaggy-haired aliens with Day-Glo teeth. Set over one wild night in South London, this zero-to-hero tale will play gangbusters in its native Blighty before a rich ancillary career.” From Cinemablend : “Attack The Block Could Be The Best Action Movie Of The Year… finds a balance in scope to keep the action moving while showcasing the brilliant, hilarious and realistic teen actors. There’s a surprising amount of smaller-scale, alien attack action in Attack the Block and Cornish’s crack team of make-up and visual effects artists pull out all the stops. The film is quickly paced and never lets up… The result: an alien invasion where you actually give a damn about the folks being invaded.” And from IndieWire : “The violence is frenetic and visceral, but Cornish shoots these sequences with clarity and intensity, suggesting he’s an action director ready to bloom. And if you live by the adage that 90% of directing is casting, then Cornish’s job was fairly easy, as a group of total unknowns completely carry this picture. Credit must be given to the young John Boyega, a possible future star, who plays Moses, the de-facto leader of the pack. Boyega has a face that reveals both anger and strength in regular doses, the type of attitude that just cannot be taught in acting classes. As such, our designated hero, Boyega, with an expressive upper brow that reflects the character’s intelligence beyond these circumstances, is believable as both a defiant tough guy and as a teen who theorizes that the aliens are a government program meant to eliminate lower-class citizens. He’s compellingly watchable.” As the last snippet notes, the cast of Attack The Block comprises of mostly unknown actors who bring a realism to the film, ensuring that, despite its fantastical tale, remains fairly grounded. And the last line about the aliens being government inventions meant to wipe out the working class, indicates some political and allegorical subtext, speaking to a universal and warranted paranoia amongst black people that’s rooted in a mistrust of government, and people in positions of power in general. History is littered with incidents that instruct those fears. Taking all of the above into consideration, Attack The Block is a film we should all be watching for down the road. There has even been excited talk of an American studio purchasing the film’s remake rights and producing a Hollywood version of it! Let’s hope Sony Pictures does release the original first, and soon, rather than shelve it in favor of an Americanized version of the movie. So, after you’re done devouring popcorn and smoothies at the theater this weekend, watching a group of white kids take on a nasty extraterrestrial in Super 8 , get ready to “Attack The Block” sometime later this year… we hope. The film’s trailer follows below for those who’ve yet to see it: Tambay Obenson is editor of Shadow And Act on the indieWIRE Network , which can be found at http://blogs.indiewire.com/shadowandact . ‘Twilight’ Movie Awards Kiss ‘Shocked’ Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively

‘I’d seen it in my head many times as I closed my eyes,’ Reynolds jokes of Pattison-on-Lautner lip-lock. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson kisses Taylor Lautner at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage In 2009, Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock took the stage at the MTV Movie Awards to present the Golden Popcorn for Best Kiss. In what would become an ongoing theme over the next few years, “Twilight” stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart won the prize. They took the stage to raucous applause and proceeded to tease a reenactment of their onscreen smooch without actually going ahead with the deed. After winning again the next year — and finally puckering up for the crowd — 2011 rolled around and Ryan Reynolds was again picked to hand out the Best Kiss award, this time with “Green Lantern” co-star Blake Lively. Thus both Ryan and Blake had quite a view when, after the Twi-kids once again nabbed the award, Pattinson bounded down from the stage, away from Stewart and into Taylor Lautner’s arms for a seriously unexpected kiss. “I did not know that there would be a ‘Twilight’-on-‘Twilight’ kiss,” Reynolds told us days later when we caught up with him at a “Green Lantern” press event. “We had no idea.” Of course, having witnessed the inaugural “Twilight” Best Kiss win, the actor had been imagining something of the sort for years. “I’d seen it in my head many times as I closed my eyes,” Reynolds added. “But that was quite shocking, actually, that he would just run off the stage like that and attack that poor boy.” Lively’s family, for their part, were equally stunned by the smooch — and the unwelcome attention of MTV’s cameras. “My family was sitting behind them,” Lively explained. “They were like, ‘Ooooh!’ They were hiding. They were so shy.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Big Fish Is Being Made Into a Broadway Musical

Every film from The Goonies to Newsies to Carrie is being adapted into a musical these days, so it’s not terribly surprising that another feature film is getting ready for its Broadway close-up. This time the movie is Big Fish , Tim Burton’s 2003 adaptation of Daniel Wallace’s novel.

‘Breaking Dawn’ Wedding ‘Tough’ For The Ladies, Kellan Lutz Says

‘They’re wearing these beautiful dresses, but they’re skintight,’ he tells MTV News of difficult filming conditions. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Kellan Lutz Photo: MTV News Speaking to the “Twilight” fans out there, it’s safe to assume that, by now, we’ve all seen the chills, thrills and heart-stopping moments contained within the “Breaking Dawn” trailer that debuted during the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday night. (We’re especially sure these Twilighters have seen the trailer .) One of the biggest squeal-getters, as far as favorite, swoon-worthy moments are concerned, was the brief glimpse of Bella and Edward’s wedding. And no matter how gorgeous everything appears in the trailer, the members of the cast have been telling us that the actual shooting of the wedding scene was not quite as glamorous, thanks to a few days of serious downpour. When MTV News caught up with Kellan Lutz on the red carpet at the Movie Awards on Sunday, we asked him to weigh in on his experience filming in the less-than-desirable rain showers. SEE PHOTOS OF ALL OF THE “TWILIGHT” STARS AT THE MOVIE AWARDS. “I just feel bad for the women on the movie,” Lutz said. “They’re wearing these beautiful dresses, but they’re skintight, and of course a lot of us are playing vampires so you have to not shiver, because vampires don’t get cold. It was tough. It was really cold. A lot of times, the heaters went off and it rained, so it made the whole climate even more cold.” Lutz’s co-star Peter Facinelli told us that, thanks to movie magic, we won’t be seeing any of the rain or shivering “Twilight” castmembers once the film is finished. “It’s funny, because whenever we have a big important scene on ‘Twilight’ [movies], it rains. I was doing the baseball sequence [from ‘Twilight’], and it was raining. But you never see it on film,” Facinelli said of some editing tricks. “With this wedding, it rained the whole time we shot the two scenes. But you’ll never see it on film. They block out the rain. They put tarps up and you’ll never see it.” MTV News has all of the highlights from the 2011 MTV Movie Awards . ‘Breaking Dawn’ Trailer: More Squeal-Filled Fan Reactions

One viewer even pretends to faint at the sight of shirtless Taylor Lautner. By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn” Photo: Summit Entertainment Christmas came early for the “Twilight” fans of the world, in the form of the trailer for “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” during Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards . Two days later, and the most die-hard fans still can’t get enough of watching and re-watching the nearly two-minute extravaganza. Because we anticipated a few over-the-top enthusiastic responses, MTV News asked fans to upload their “Breaking Dawn” trailer reactions to Your.MTV.com , the top three aired on MTV’s “The Seven,” on Monday. But since we received so many wonderful reaction videos, we felt that we needed to highlight a few more. This latest group features similar themes of breathlessness, wide-eyed enthusiasm and, of course, squeals of delight. One video features five young girls perched on a couch in a room surrounded by “Team Edward” paraphernalia, all of them remaining mostly composed, until one little lady pretends to faint after seeing shirtless Taylor Lautner. The reactions from Emily and Lizzy in Haysville, Kansas, go from smiley to stunned to squealy. Also notable is the fact that a young guy is hanging out in the background, probably a brother or friend, who tries to sit through the ladies’ screams but bails halfway through. Finally, uploader ayLa94kLd submitted footage of herself and her sister’s reactions. The lively duo were the first reactors we’ve seen to offer a bit of running commentary throughout. At one point, the older sis playfully smacks her younger sister to keep her from fully freaking out. In addition to those video reactions, we have a few more thoughts, written by our readers in the comments section under the first trailer-reaction story we posted. “THAT TRAILER WAS AWESOME!!!” exclaimed Tucheer83. “I loved their reactions. Mine was worse. I was literally running around the house. I couldn’t believe [director Bill] Condon actually gave us the headboard breaking. I so love that man. No wonder Jennifer Hudson got an Oscar [for Condon’s ‘Dreamgirls’]. This guy is good!!! ‘New Moon’ used to be my favorite trailer, but Condon beat it hands down — but not by much.” “I loved the trailer,” Shari44 wrote. “My biggest squeals came when I got a glimpse of Bella looking into Edward’s eyes in her wedding veil. Just beautiful. Second squeal and a little giggle was when he was gripping the headboard during a passionate moment,” she added. “When Edward and Bella were snuggling together, then when we could see her belly with the first signs of pregnancy. Awesome trailer. Loved it all. Any Edward moment makes me sigh at the very least.” MTV News has all of the highlights from the 2011 MTV Movie Awards . ‘Harry Potter’ Stars Emma Watson, Tom Felton Say Goodbye

Will there be tears? ‘Maybe one or two, just little ones,’ Watson tells MTV News. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Emma Watson Photo: MTV News The “Harry Potter” franchise comes to an end for fans on July 15, but for the stars of the best-selling franchise, the end came over a year and a half ago. “Potter” stars Emma Watson and Tom Felton hit the MTV Movie Awards red carpet Sunday to represent their series against previous victors “Twilight” but said that it was a bit surreal to be there supporting a series they finished filming so long ago. “It’s been over, like, a year and a half since we shot it, and I haven’t seen any of it,” Felton said. The final press rounds for “Deathly Hallows, Part 2” will be taking place this summer, something Watson called “very strange.” She said she would probably shed some more tears when the end came for “Harry Potter” all over again. “Maybe a few. Maybe one or two, just little ones,” she said. The “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” footage that was shown during the MTV Movie Awards was the first Felton had seen of any of the “Part 2” footage, which is impressive, because many trailers have been released in anticipation of the July 15 release date. CHECK OUT PHOTOS OF THE “POTTER” CAST BACKSTAGE AT THE MOVIE AWARDS. “I’m excited to see the sneak peek!” he said excitedly. “That’s half the reason I’m here tonight, I want to see the sneak peek.” Since Felton hasn’t seen any of the “Part 2” footage, he has no idea how he will look fighting the final battle on the big screen in 3-D. That is something else he said he’s very excited to see. “I’m not sure whether that will add or subtract to my screen presence, but we’ll see,” Felton said with a laugh. ‘Twilight’ Rookie Noel Fisher Opens Up About ‘Breaking Dawn’

‘There’s a lot of joking and having a good time,’ he tells MTV News of vibe on set. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images The cast of “The Twilight Saga” might have won all their MTV Movie Awards for “Eclipse,” but the real focus was on the trailer for “Breaking Dawn.” Because the hype is so strong for the fourth installment of “The Twilight Saga,” newcomer Noel Fisher was invited to attend his first MTV Movie Awards. Fisher, who plays Vladimir in “Breaking Dawn,” described the experience as “way next level.” Fisher won’t hit the big screen until “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” comes out in 2012, and he was completely unwilling to share any plot tidbits when MTV News caught up with him on the red carpet. “Can’t tell you about that yet! I’m in the second movie, I can tell you that. But other than that, can’t tell you too much about the actual script or what happens in it,” he said with a laugh. SEE PICS OF THE “TWILIGHT” CAST’S BIG MOVIE AWARDS NIGHT. Since it was his first Movie Awards and the rest of the “Twilight” cast’s third, MTV asked if any of his co-stars gave him some words of advice for walking the red carpet. “The biggest piece of advice I found was just be yourself,” he said. “The really nice thing about it is that everyone is so friendly, so just kind of relax and be yourself and get to meet people.” Fisher said he had a similarly good experience on the set of “Breaking Dawn,” where everyone welcomed him in as part of the “Twilight” family. The vibe on set was “really fun,” he said, especially since Vladimir comes into the story at a point when many other new characters join up with the Cullens as well. “One of the best parts about doing this for me was everyone was really friendly. They have such a nice camaraderie and such a nice repartee back and forth. You can see it onscreen, [and] it’s very much offscreen [too]. There’s a lot of joking and having a good time,” he said. “They’re all very professional and they can do that, and then they can turn in and be in what they need to be in. It was really nice.” Another exciting part of coming to the Movie Awards for Fisher was the chance to see the exclusive “Breaking Dawn” trailer. Unfortunately someone leaked the sneak peek before the Movie Awards started, but Fisher said he held off on watching the video so he could see it at the show. He said he was a bit upset about the fact that it had been leaked ahead of time and the fact that “Twilight” exclusives have been leaked in the past. “There’s a lot of excitement about the movie and people want to see it really badly, but I think that the point of it, you kind of have to hold on to it and just let it come. It’s more satisfying,” Fisher said. MTV News has all of the highlights from the 2011 MTV Movie Awards .
