Stars show Twitter love for actress Chelsea Kane and dance pro Tony Dovolani as the reality show kicks off a new season. Disney stars tend to be a staple on the hit TV dance competition and this time around Chelsea Kane has been recruited. Under her given name, Chelsea Staub, the actress has appeared on such hit shows as “Wizards of Waverly Place” and “JONAS.” Kane’s co-stars of the latter program sent out their love and support to the 22-year-old, who is dancing with Mark Ballas. She ended up getting 21 out of possible 30, and the Jonas Brothers seemed proud of their one-time TV cohort. “Team Kanenball! Help support @ChelseaKane tonight on DWTS!” the brothers tweeted , while Nick Jonas added , “How awesome was @ChelseaKane on #DWTS!” Former contestant and “Hills” star Audrina Patridge also checked out the premiere episode, and showed her love and support for her former dance partner, pro Tony Dovolani. She tweeted , “Watching @Tonydovolani and Wendy Williams on dwts!!!! ….Good job guys:) I miss it!!!!!!” Patridge and Dovolani were frontrunners last season, but it seems that he’s not having as easy as a go of it with his new partner. He and Williams only clocked in with 14 points. The talk-show host, however, didn’t have the lowest score of the night. That distinction was bestowed on “Loveline” co-host Mike Catherwood, who managed to only scrounge up a 13. The highest score of the evening went to Ralph Macchio, who seemed to channel some of those “Karate Kid” moves as he notched a 24. As for the remaining celebrity dancers, Kristie Alley scored a 23, footballer Hines Ward rated a 21, singer Romeo and WWE wrestler Chris Jericho both tallied 19 points, model Petra Nemcova and Playboy Playmate Kendra Wilkinson each notched an 18, and Sugar Ray Leonard earned a 17. The new preview gives us a few clues about Jack’s journey to the Fountain of Youth. By Eric Ditzian Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow Photo: Disney We’ve just crossed the two-month mark; there’s now a mere 59 days until “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” shoves off and into theaters. What’s more, there’s now a brand-new trailer for Johnny Depp’s seafaring 3-D adventure flick, giving us important pieces of plot info and raising all new questions about what we’re going to see when the movie debuts. As we continue to count down the days until that premiere, let’s take a look at the new trailer’s five key moments. Looks Like They Took a Wrong Turn We’ve already seen a variation of this scene — Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow walking under some kind of stone archway on an island — but in the new trailer, we see the camera push forward a little, giving us a peek at what’s on the other side: a ship perched on a cliff high above the water line. How’d it get there? Well, as we see throughout the new footage, the laws of physics get twisted in all sorts of funky ways. Just as compelling a question as what the ship is doing up there is: Whose ship is it? Speaking of ships, the Black Pearl is back in the mix, though this time it seems to be in the hands of nefarious Blackbeard (Ian McShane). And as Captain Barbossa explains, Blackbeard has made some unconventional improvements to the craft. “The rigging had come to life. Our own ship turned against us,” he tells Jack as we see shots of ropes whipping around like tentacles and plucking up pirates. What sort of dark magic does Blackbeard wield? A confusing one, no doubt, because after Sparrow gets caught up in the ship’s new powers, he blurts out, “Captain, I wish to report a mutiny. I can name fingers and point names!” We’ve seen plenty of mermaids floating through previous “Pirates” footage, but the new trailer gives us the most information yet about how these creatures fit into the storyline. Turns out, a mermaid is needed to locate the fountain of youth — that mythical place everyone in “On Stranger Tides” is trying to find. That explains why, as in earlier footage, we see a shot of a mermaid trapped in a seriously large fish tank. Captivity, however, can kill a mermaid. Given that under his tattoos and dreadlocks, Sparrow is a very moral guy, we suspect Jack might go from capturing a mermaid to setting one free. From the very first official “On Stranger Tides” photos , we’ve seen Jack being dragged into Old Royal Naval College by King George II’s guards and offered the job of finding the fountain of youth. But the captain isn’t one take to orders. How does he slip away from King George’s men? A clue seems to arrive in the form of Jack wearing a musty old wig and a bright red robe, just like a British judge: nothing like a clever disguise to help a pirate escape. As we mentioned, Jack’s quest for the fountain brings him into contact with lands in which the laws of physics don’t entirely apply. Early in the new trailer, for instance, a drop of water seems to fall upwards, hitting Jack’s hands as it goes. Here we see our hero in a sort of cave that has a roof of water. How exactly does something like happen? And, furthermore, how is he pulled up into the water as if by reverse gravity? We likely won’t get the full answer until the movie arrives on May 20. That’s the question Reese Witherspoon is compelled to answer in a brand-new exclusive clip from “Water for Elephants” that we debuted during “MTV First: Robert Pattinson,” a 30-minute live chat with the actor on Friday (March 18). The clip comes at a point in the movie when Jacob (Pattinson) and Marlena (Witherspoon) are considering fleeing the circus in which they both work. The pair have fallen for each other, though Marlena is married to an unstable animal trainer named August (Christoph Waltz). His life at risk, Jacob is planning to jump from the circus’ train. “If we don’t get too far, there’s a hotel in Salem,” Marlena tells him. “But don’t stay longer than the night.” “Just come with me,” he says to her considerable vexation. “You think there’s nothing out there for you, but there is. You just can’t see it.” “Jacob, you don’t understand. I can’t. He’ll find me,” she tells him, referring to her husband. “Marlena, there’s a better kind of life that’s meant for you,” he answers. “Whether that life is with me or not, whether you love me or not, it doesn’t matter. But it’s got to be now.” Jacob then reaches out for her hand, offering up a smoldering look that would make Edward Cullen proud. After a few seconds of hesitation, Marlena takes his hand in hers. Wouldn’t you? What happens after that? You’ll just have to find out when the movie hits theaters April 22. Director Neil Burger takes us behind the scenes of Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro’s new thriller. By Eric Ditzian Robert DeNiro and Bradley Cooper in “Limitless” Photo: Universal Pictures There is a scene midway through “Limitless” in which Abbie Cornish’s character is running through a park, attempting to escape a guy intent on gutting her like a fish. Unsure how to get away, she swallows a black-market drug called NZT — a little pill allowing her to access 100 percent of her mind — and scans the park for possible weapons: a pair of gardening sheers or a baseball bat, perhaps? Then she sees a little girl on ice skates off in the distance. Bingo! She races toward the rink as the evil dude gives chase, then picks up the girl and uses her ice skates to slice her enemy’s face. It’s a wackily kinetic scene in a thriller filled with such moments. The only problem for director Neil Burger was casting the girl to take part in the madness. “Luckily, the stunt people were completely game to offer up their child to be thrown through the air!” Burger laughed in a recent conversation with MTV News. And that, it turns out, is how Piper Brown, daughter of Jill Brown (whose stunt credits include “The Green Hornet” and “I Am Legend”), made her big-screen debut. “It was our first day of shooting, which is an insane way to begin,” Burger said. We had to do it in one day with 200 extras on the ice, plus the crew, and we’re just powering through everyone with cameras and cranes.” That’s just one of the untold stories behind the production of “Limitless” we picked up during a recent conversation with Burger. Before checking out the film, which hit theaters Friday (March 18), check out four more “Limitless” secrets revealed: Why Is NZT a Clear Pill? In creating a fictional drug for the big screen, Burger and his team could have gone in any direction. NZT could have been something you swallow or smoke or, heck, even something used as a suppository reminiscent of a troubling scene in “Trainspotting.” But following the book on which the movie is based, they stuck with a pill. What, however, would the pill that Bradley Cooper’s character gets hooked on look like? “Right up to the end, we were thinking about what this pill would be,” Burger explained. “Sometimes we thought it’d have these beveled edges or a different colored center, but it started to look like a hundred other things you’ve seen, from a Lifesaver to Skittles. Then we stumbled onto one that was clear, and I knew it was just perfect. It sums up exactly what it does for him.” What Exactly Does NZT Do? Though the story is based on a novel by Alan Glynn, it was up to Burger to “invent the rules of the drug,” as he put it. How does it affect Cooper’s Eddie Morra? What would happen if Eddie suddenly couldn’t get his fix? “I worked on it on my own, because I had to become an authority on it with the actors and crew,” he added. “It became that you don’t get high or wired or stoned. You were just clear and knew what to do and how to get it done.” Along those lines, Burger didn’t refer to any existing drugs, because there’s nothing on Earth like NZT. “I didn’t do research. I just decided what I wanted the drug to be. I wanted Eddie to become the perfect version of himself. I wanted him to remember everything he’s ever seen. It’s not that it makes him into Superman. It makes him fearless, and he’s able to access information instantaneously.” How Did They Pull Off Those Ultra-Long Zooming Shots? Often when Eddie is on NZT, the camera pushes through the cityscape in a long, seemingly continuous shot, pushing forward for miles without stop. It’s a very cool visual effect, one unlike we’ve ever seen. How the heck did they pull off what Burger calls “infinity zooms”? “I started looking at fractals,” he told us. “I liked the idea that each part they’re made up of is a mirror of the whole. And I looked at fractal zooms, where you push into the fractal, going from shape to shape, an Escher-like movement. That was how Eddie’s mind worked: these microcosms that mirrored a larger sense of the world. I wanted to bring that idea into the city and have it be like a fractal zoom. It was a great way to show how he perceived space and time. “So I had a very clear idea of how I wanted to do it, and nobody could figure out how to do it,” he explained. “I found a visual-effects company that finally figured it out — and it’s a bit of a secret, because it’s a new thing. We were able to move the camera through the city and then visually stitch it all together, but you can’t see where the seams are.” Why Did They Change Eddie’s Job From Copywriter to Novelist? In Glynn’s book, Eddie is a struggling copywriter. In the book, he’s a struggling novelist. Why was it important to change his job? “It was important to make him an artist with aspirations toward greatness, and it just wasn’t happening. A copywriter just wasn’t going to communicate that,” Burger said. “He had to have the big dream. We all want to be a rock star or a pro basketball player or Warren Buffet, but then when push comes to shove, we aren’t those things — we can’t be those things. He was just one more guy who had this big dream, and he couldn’t achieve it, even though he wanted to. Q-Tip tells MTV News documentary director Michael Rapaport mismanaged group’s travel plans. Two of the four members of the esteemed rap group, Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, recently sat down with MTV News — a third, Jarobi, spoke with us during the sit-down by phone — to elaborate on their issues with the Michael Rapaport-directed documentary , “Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest.” Although the film premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, Phife Dawg was the only ATCQ member to attend. The group did, however, issue a press release at the time expressing their support of the film . According to ATCA, the statement was to help counter any impressions that the group was not involved with the documentary. “We were being made to look like we weren’t a part of the process,” Ali told MTV News. “And we’ve been a part of the process from day one, when we were like, ‘OK, Mike, we cool with you being a director and telling the story of A Tribe Called Quest.’ We’ve always wanted everything to flow from beginning to end in a successful manner. Unfortunately, he was not playing along. There was no script; he had a ‘purpose.’ But it seems like the purpose he delivered to us verbally wasn’t what was being displayed.” Q-Tip then chimed in, citing an MTV News story in which Rapaport expressed disappointment about the full group not being at Sundance, even after the director said he’d allocated money to pay for their travel and lodging. Q-Tip insisted Rapaport “came out of his pocket for $5,000” in order to cover travel expenses for ATCQ and their managers, a figure he implied was particularly low for a week-long stay in Park City, Utah. Moreover, according to Ali, Rapaport misconstrued the situation by failing to reveal certain details. “It’s a deceptive way to tell what really happened,” Muhammad said. “Our management, they’re thorough and they capture things right away. They didn’t need five days to book a ticket; they were on top of it for months to get it covered. Why if he’s being asked the question to take care of the travel of the group that you need their support [for], why wait till the last minute to take care of it?” Ali was not at Sundance because he was on a tour that he told MTV News had been booked three months earlier, a fact that the documentary’s producers were aware of, he said. The ATCQ DJ expressed further dismay about all the promotion being done for a film the group had not properly vetted. “Before we go and do all of that rah-rah, can we even get the film correct?” Muhammad said. “We can’t even have conversations with you and your legal department to take care of other business. Not only can we not do that, we can’t even simplify a travel answer in a reasonable amount of time. It was so disheveled. How could we not be frustrated? But here we are moving forward, trying to be positive about the thing and he’s playing his PR game. At this point, here we are.” Q-Tip also dismissed any notion that he was apprehensive about the film’s content. “He’s out there saying quotes like, ‘I think they’re scared,’ ” Q-Tip said. “He singled me out saying that I was scared because the film was this open thing. I lived it, what am I going to be scared about? There’s not a big reveal in it that I didn’t know. I’m a human being, these are my brothers. What am I fearful about?” However, Q-Tip did express concern that the film might be imbalanced due to lack of context. After viewing a first edit of the film, Q-Tip, Ali, Rapaport and others went over the material to make suggestions. “After we worked on the edit I was like, ‘Yo, Mike, see? This is good. That’s how we supposed to do,’ ” Q-Tip recalled. ” ‘You still got your stuff, we got our stuff.’ We went over it, it’s great.” According to Q-Tip, Rapaport flew back to Los Angeles to implement the changes and piece the documentary together. But when the group received a second edit, they noticed they weren’t listed as producers on the film. After the group’s management asked that this be corrected, Rapaport admitted that their lack of a “producer” credit was no oversight. “Mike sends an e-mail saying why we shouldn’t be producers,” Q-Tip said. “Because it’s viewed as propaganda [if the featured artists are also producers], it would be biased and the public wouldn’t go for it. That’s what he said.” When MTV News’ Sway asked if they agreed with Rapaport’s reasoning, Jarobi responded, “I don’t buy it because I just watched that ‘Fab Five’ [documentary on ESPN] and Jalen Rose is an executive producer, so it doesn’t make sense to me.” Q-Tip added, “This is hip-hop, this is music, nobody writes the ironclad rules. The crew had lost so many days because of rain that they started wondering how great it would be to shoot in a location where it never, ever, ever rained. “We just spit-balled from there,” Frost told MTV News recently. “No rain became the desert, the desert became Area 51 and then it was a short step to thinking about these two guys encountering an alien.”
