The title of the MC’s fifth solo album, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang, represents the New York City borough he hails from, Staten Island — whose street name in rap circles is Shaolin — and, of course, the MC has been a key member of the iconic Wu-Tang Clan since its founding in the early ’90s. Ultimately, though, Rae’s album, which dropped on Tuesday (March 8), is inspired (like many things Wu-Tang) by the classic 1981 Gordon Liu film of the same name, about a rivalry between two schools of ancient martial arts. “[The film is about] basically two schools fighting with one another,” Raekwon told MTV News recently about the movie’s plot. “But they all come from the same school, and it was an outsider who actually tried to get the Shaolin style and the Wu-Tang style and have them go at one another. On this album, it’s the same thing: It’s two schools and, you know, I’m part of that school. I’m Shaolin but at the same time, I’m Wu-Tang. So really, it’s ego versus discipline, dealing in my mind and everything that I been through, and dealing with the crew.” It’s no coincidence that the concept behind Raekwon’s album focuses on two forces in opposition. Rae began working on Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang back in late 2007, after expressing disappointment with the creative direction Wu-Tang’s nominal leader, the RZA, had taken with the group’s ’07 LP, 8 Diagrams. By Eric Ditzian Abbie Cornish Photo: MTV News Madonna wrapped production on “W.E.,” her second directorial effort, in October, and now reports are suggesting she’s looking to premiere the movie at the Venice Film Festival, which takes place from August 31 to September 10. The film’s co-star, Abbie Cornish, not only confirmed the possibility of a Venice debut to MTV News, but also revealed the mysterious role Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes, will be playing. “I heard yesterday,” Cornish told us about Venice, while promoting her upcoming thriller, “Limitless.” “That’d be amazing.” “W.E” follows a “Julie & Julia”-esque dual story line, one featuring Cornish as a contemporary woman obsessed with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and another focusing on the royal couple itself. News that Lourdes would appear in a small role surfaced last fall, when photos of the teen in a schoolgirl’s uniform popped up online, but until now the nature of her part was unclear. Cornish’s character, it turns out, has a deep connection to that of Lourdes. “She actually plays a younger version of my character,” Cornish said, adding that because they portray the same person, they never got to share actual screen time. “She’s a super-cute, younger version of my character.” “W.E.” marks Madonna’s second feature following “Filth and Wisdom,” which hit only a handful of theaters in 2008. The new project, the pop star turned filmmaker said last year, has been an obsession of hers even before “Filth and Wisdom” and took her two-and-a-half years to write. “I made ‘Filth and Wisdom’ because I realized that I didn’t really have a right to make a bigger film until I made a smaller film — and learned how to make a film,” she said. According to Cornish, though, the Queen of Pop is a born filmmaker. “Madonna is a natural director,” the actress told us. “It’s in her nature. She’s a Leo and she really represents the Leos very well. She’s a very smart woman, very well read. She really absorbs a lot about whatever she’s involved in. I think she really loves learning. It was interesting to see her evolve throughout the filmmaking process. By MTV News Staff The Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage We have two healthy servings of Foo Fighters news this week: First, the worldwide premiere of the video for the Foos’ “Rope” (the first single from their upcoming seventh studio album, Wasting Light ) will air live at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on Thursday, March 10, on MTV and MTV.com (followed by premieres at 8 p.m. ET on MTV Hits, mtvU and VH1.com). To celebrate the release of the video on Thursday, the band is set to invade the home of a super-fan in the Los Angeles area, along with MTV News’ James Montgomery, to introduce the video live and answer fans’ questions. Immediately following the on-air premiere, the band will stay on for an additional Q&A session live-streamed on MTV.com. Fans can submit questions through MTV.com, via Twitter (@MTVNews using hashtag #askfoos) or on MTV’s Facebook page. And for the second piece of news: The Foo Fighters are coming to the Woodies for the first time. The legendary band will perform “Rope” during the 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards show, airing live from Austin, Texas, on March 16 at midnight on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU. The Woodies will be hosted by “Community” funnyman Donald Glover and feature sets by Wiz Khalifa, Sleigh Bells, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All and Two Door Cinema Club. Among the presenters at the show are Matt & Kim, Lupe Fiasco, Dev, Chiddy Bang, Skylar Grey and “My Life as Liz” star Liz Lee. MNDR will serve as the show’s house DJ. The night before the Woodies, a new Foo Fighters documentary will premiere as part of to the SXSW Film festival. Directed by Academy Award winner James Moll (“The Last Days,” “Running the Sahara”), the movie charts the entire career arc of the band, from the cassette demos leader Dave Grohl recorded during his time as Nirvana’s drummer through their rise to the top of the rock world. The 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards will air live on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU on Wednesday, March 16, at midnight (ET/PT) from the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Insiders say film could get nominated in documentary category at next year’s Oscars. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber in “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” Photo: Paramount Pictures The kid is hot. First, Justin Bieber became the first person since, well, himself to land two albums in the top five on the Billboard 200, and now his 3-D movie, “Never Say Never,” has vaulted into the #3 position on the list of top-grossing documentaries of all time. According to Box Office Mojo , “Never” has grossed $64,162,036 to date, putting it on track to possibly overtake the #2 doc of all time, “March of the Penguins,” which grossed more than $77 million. It’s unlikely to knock off the top documentary of all time, Michael Moore’s 2004 flick “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which rolled up $119 million, but with the “Never” director’s cut re-release last weekend (which brought in another $9 million), Bieber is positioned to conquer yet another medium. In his run to the top, Bieber has leaped over such lauded and popular docs as “Super Size Me,” Madonna’s “Truth or Dare,” Moore’s “Bowling for Columbine,” former Vice President Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” and the nature flick “Earth.” It also took the crown for the biggest opening weekend of any documentary , with a $29.5 million first weekend, squeezing past the $23 million open of “Fahrenheit.” Hollywood may end up catching Bieber Fever as well, with The Hollywood Reporter asking in a recent article whether “Never” could land the 17-year-old phenom a spot at the Oscars next year. A source told the trade magazine that “Never” had serious buzz at some post-Oscar parties thanks to its healthy grosses, which have impressed some Academy members. “You’d be surprised at the caliber of people who came up to Justin at the Vanity Fair party at the Sunset Tower, most of whom had seen the movie and loved it,” said an unnamed insider. “There was even talk of putting it up for an Oscar next year in the documentary category. People appreciate that it’s not just a kids’ movie.” The article mentioned that Bieber was one of the brightest stars at the Fair party, chatting up Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger and working the room like a pro.
