‘Just Go With It’: The Reviews Are In!

Adam Sandler fans will surely hit the theater whether critics are into it or not. By Eric Ditzian Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler in “Just Go With It” Photo: Sony Pictures Like the iPhone 4, Adam Sandler movies are basically review-proof. His comedies never engender the sort of critical praise that, say, Judd Apatow’s often do, yet crowds reliably show up to watch Sandler do his thing. So perhaps we shouldn’t pay much mind to the often harsh reviews that have greeted his latest laugher, the Jennifer Aniston-co-starring rom-com, “Just Go With It.” After all, even in the face of stiff competition from Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never,” Sandler’s flick is expected to win the weekend’s box-office crown. Possibly, though, you want to know a little more about “Just Go With It” than whose face fills nearly every scene. In that case, read on to find out what the critics have to say! The Story “Sandler plays Danny, a plastic surgeon and schlub who marries a shrew but discovers post-divorce (and post-nose job) that the gold band is a magnet for bar chicks. That changes when he meets Palmer (the stunning Brooklyn Decker), which prompts him to shove the ring in his pocket to woo her beachside. Everything’s hunky-dory until Palmer discovers the ring in Danny’s pocket and naturally assumes he’s married. Here’s where the film takes its first characteristic step: Instead of explaining himself, Danny concocts a bizarre lie that he’s separated from his wife and close to a divorce. To maintain that lie, he persuades his assistant, Katherine (Aniston), to not only play his soon-to-be-ex-wife but to come with her two children to Hawaii to, well, make the movie feature length.” — Scott Bowles, USA Today The Look and the Laughs “[Director Dennis] Dugan constantly shoots their paid vacation and indeed the entire film like a commercial, and with the rampant product placement, it’s hard not to believe that’s the case. Cuts are sloppy, dialogue looping is obvious, and although they must’ve seemed fresh after every take on set, Sandler’s perpetual off-the-cuff name checks become a monotonous crutch in scene after scene. The man can’t resist ethnic stereotypes, plastic surgery mishaps, shots to the groin or sheep resuscitation gags (a moment any other film would’ve played off as something funnier said than shown), and the film runs nearly two hours for all its allegedly comedic indulgences.” — William Goss, Cinematical The Chemistry “[Aniston] has got expert comic timing when all those around her have none; she’s got lightness and finesse when everyone else is being indulgently silly. She plays like a grown-up; she looks fab. And she gets a real commitment out of Sandler — her performance makes him grow up, too. Amidst the wreckage of ‘Just Go With It,’ Aniston and Sandler have a real chemistry. They should go elsewhere with it.” — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly The Dissenters “Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison production team has rarely put much stock in the rules of classical storytelling, but its newest project, ‘Just Go With It,’ manages to misfire in two seemingly incompatible directions. A puerile kiddie-comedy without the anarchic energy, and a schmaltzy romantic comedy without the sweetness, this Hawaii-set farce is too frantic and too lackadaisical a take on the oft-adapted French play ‘Cactus Flower.’ Working with longtime director Dennis Dugan, Sandler and the rest of the film’s marquee cast could nonetheless steer it toward good returns.” — Andrew Barker, Variety The Final Word “It had been one of the minor inducements to longevity, this crazy hope of one day actually seeing Jennifer Aniston in a good movie. That day arrives with ‘Just Go With It,’ a very funny romantic comedy that nicely combines Adam Sandler’s acerbic sweetness with Aniston’s down-to-earth warmth — and that finds an excuse for Aniston to both play an average person and yet dress like a movie star. The screenplay has a setup that borders on farce, but the romantic heart of it is strong and expresses something unusual. It’s a movie about the romance of familiarity, about the satisfaction and spiritual necessity of actually knowing someone and being known. So much of movie romance is usually about the opposite of that, about going off into the unknown, about adventure in the form of, not physical danger, but emotional danger. ‘Just Go With It’ makes a feint in that direction, but not enough to fool anybody.” — Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle Check out everything we’ve got on “Just Go With It.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Flickedup.com: “Justin Bieber:Never say never”

The teen pop star with the trademark mop top wants to take over the world. Justin Bieber’s latest project is, at the movies. Will you catch the Bieber fever ? Brett Martin here in the flickedup virtual theater, thanks for watching. I have never been a big fan of teen pop. Monkees, David Cassidy, Leif Garret, Donny Osmond,Jonas Brothers, and Miley Cyrus… I am not of fan of any of them, from any era. This Justin Beiber kid, with his film Justin Beiber:Never Say Never is a cut above other teen pop stars. Musically I am not a fan but this film does hold up a mirror to our society that is obviously in the midst of a pre-teen genuine youthquake. Basically Never Say Never is a concert movie packed with home videos and audition tapes. The interviews with his entourage of helpers makes this quite an interesting “behind the music” film. Even the most cynical of you out there may end up being Beiber believers after seeing this film. He comes from a humble background, he has strong family ties and a dedicated Christian faith. He is the first pop star to become famous via Youtube and he is not a biproduct of the Disney/Nicholodeon teeny pop factory. This movie, though its not for everyone, is a film that everyone can see. Some people in your family may enjoy it more than others and that, in my opinion, is worth the price of admission. This energetic portrait of the global superstar as a normal teenager from small-town in Canada, works. The Flick-o-meter gives Justin Beiber: Never say Never a four out of five. It runs about 15 minutes too long but really, when its the true story about a kid who never gave up on his dreams, who cares how long it is, right ? ‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’: Everything You Need To Know

Proving we never doubted him, MTV News has been following the 3-D doc since last summer. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Michael Loccisano/ Getty Images Last August we discovered that pop superstar Justin Bieber was working on a 3-D movie . While details about the project were scant, the basic plot was outlined as footage that was a mix of Bieber’s personal life and concert performances. Soon after the movie was announced though, Oscar-winning “An Inconvenient Truth” director Davis Guggenheim dropped out , leaving the project in peril. But it was back on again a few weeks later when Jon Chu came onboard to helm the flick. “[It’s] a movie for his fans , a movie for people who don’t know him, and we’re gonna tell the underdog story of where he came from,” Chu explained in August. “Because it’s a really fascinating story and it has a lot to do with our sort of digital lifestyle now. He was able to do what corporations try to do now when they use YouTube and they don’t even know what to do with it yet. It’s a pretty cool story for our time.” With the project in full swing, Bieber hit New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden on August 31 to shoot the film’s concert footage. Lucky fans at that show got an early teaser knowing that superstars like Miley Cyrus and Usher would appear in the film. The film remained without a title until mid-October, when Bieber’s team slowly rolled out an epic puzzle that revealed the project would be called “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.” A few weeks later, first trailer the dropped and it included interviews with fans and family and vintage Bieber video. In November, MTV News caught up with Bieber at his book signing and he described the film as “inspiring.” The following month, he revealed that he’d seen some of the film and that it was “amazing.” “I mean, I’m always nervous. We’re always trying to make our movies better,” Chu told us in December. “[Justin’s] been very supportive, he and his family and his team. I’m excited to share it with the world and show another side of 3-D. With ‘Step Up 3D,’ we learned a lot of lessons and we discovered a lot of things, and it’s just the beginning.” After obsessing over the trailer for weeks, fans were treated to a “Never Say Never” poster in late January. “Especially for this generation of kids, [it’s important to show] that they could make it on their own without a big corporation,” Chu told us when we caught up with him earlier this month. “I thought it was an exciting way to tell it: through his music.” On February 3, Bieber hit the Big Apple to premiere the flick, which features a new track, “Born to Be Somebody.” A week later he premiered the movie in Los Angeles, where even the star’s celebrity fans admitted to having Bieber Fever So what does Bieber think fans will take away from the flick? “People didn’t really know,” the Biebs told MTV News in L.A. “They didn’t understand that I’ve been playing music ever since I was born and it’s always been in me. And this movie is really going to show that I’m not just some packaged thing that some A&R put together. It was actually just me living my dream and just making music.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . But here she is, makin’ the media rounds, signing copies of her new book, The Rules According to JWoww , at a Borders Book Store in NYC: We haven’t read it (sorry) but we’re totally going to in a couple of years when this work of brilliance finally comes out in paperback. So no spoilers here. That doesn’t mean we can’t guess, however. Justin Bieber Movie Reviews: Mostly Positive!

Hey, did you hear that Justin Bieber is starring in a 3D biopic about his life? The singer hasn’t been engaged in much publicity about the film, but it’s true. While it’s likely that every teenager under the age of 18 has already pre-ordered tickets for the release of ” Never Say Never ,” it should be encouraging to read that movie critics have given the flick mostly positive reviews. A handful of examples follow… Though anyone who needs convincing won’t touch this one with a 10-foot pole, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never makes a persuasive case for its titular star as a far more talented-than-usual teen idol. – Variety Justin Bieber: Never Say Never may be the concert film as glorified promotional product, but it captures a genuine youthquake. – Entertainment Weekly The surprising thing about the new behind-the-scenes documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never is that it should have appeal well beyond the star’s young, adoring female fan base. – Box Office Magazine An undeniably engaging musical portrait that delivers major bangs for the buck. – Hollywood Reporter There’s no scrimping on the Bieber here, but he’s a curiously vague presence, obscured in the shadow of this monument to his brand. – Village Voice
