‘X-Men: First Class’: Everything We’ve Seen So Far

Before the hotly anticipated trailer debuts, we thumb through our first peeks at Magneto, Charles Xavier, Emma Frost and more. By Eric Ditzian Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr in “X-Men: First Class” Photo: Murray Close The first trailer for “X-Men: First Class” is only hours away from going live on the film’s Facebook page, giving us our first look at footage from the upcoming superhero flick. It’s been a long time coming, considering that Fox first gave a go-ahead for the script back in 2008. Since then, we’ve gleaned all sorts of insight into the project, from interviews with behind-the-scenes players to production rumors to casting confirmations. And since filming began late last summer, we’ve been gifted with a slew of set photos and official production shots. Before the trailer arrives, let’s review everything we’ve seen so far. First Look at January Jones Our initial peek at “X-Men” came early last September, when photos of the “Mad Men” star — in full, fur-hatted costume as telepathic Emma Frost — popped up online. The aesthetic for the outfit seemed to be retro-futuristic, at once in keeping with the film’s ’60s-era setting and the mutants’ ahead-of-the-human-curve outlook. The photos also indicated — based on the presence of a red-starred jeep and helicopter — that the military will somehow factor into the story line. Meet James McAvoy Weeks later, we got our first look at McAvoy as Charles Xavier . Although taken at night and a little blurry, the photos once again showcased the film’s retro vibe. According to a report from an onlooker on the Oxford, England, set, the scene in question features Xavier “getting doctorates in theology and philosophy from Oxford University in the 1960s, his manipulation of student uprisings using his psychic powers and the way he meets best friend-turned-archrival Magneto.” The Fallen Blackbird By December, the production had shifted Stateside and we got a tantalizing look at Xavier’s Blackbird ship. The aerial shots seemed to indicate the ship had crashed on a beach. The actual location of the shoot was an island off the coast of Georgia, but speculation suggested the in-film setting would be Muir Island, Scotland, where Xavier conducts experiments to better understand the mutant gene. Weeks later, a supposed “X-Men” storyboard indicated that a mutant may be responsible for a Blackbird crash. Look at All Those Mutants! In January, a photo popped up showing a bunch of mutants together, including Jones, McAvoy, Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Rose Byrne (Moira MacTaggert) and Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique). It turned out the photo was an early leak , and director Matthew Vaughn was not pleased. “When I found out, I said, ‘What the f— is this sh–?’ and Fox is running around trying to figure out what happened as well,” he said. “I agree. It’s like a bad Photoshop, which maybe it was by someone. It didn’t reflect the movie. I was shocked when I saw it.” Official photos soon arrived: Kevin Bacon as Hellfire Club baddie Sebastian Shaw, rocking an ascot and talking business with Jones; Fassbender and James McAvoy looking stylish and concerned alongside some of their mutant students; a helmet-clad Fassbender as Magneto ; and McAvoy employing Xavier’s gift of telepathy. Most recently, looks at Magento from behind and the full X-Men logo were published on Wednesday, ahead of the trailer premiere. “I’m a fan of X-Men. We’re not bastardizing X-Men, I’m trying to get them back to being whole again,” Vaughn said. “It’s definitely more serious and more realistic, and I think that’s something that had to happen. That’s my feeling about the world we live in right now. I think the glossy colorful superhero film sorta had its day.” Check out everything we’ve got on “X-Men: First Class.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . ‘Iron Man 3’ To Be Directed By Shane Black?

‘Lethal Weapon’ scribe is reportedly ‘in contention’ to helm the movie. By Eric Ditzian “Iron Man” Photo: Paramount Six years after making his directorial debut with the noirish dark comedy “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” Shane Black might be reteaming with Robert Downey Jr. for the actor’s third Marvel superhero adventure. According to The Hollywood Reporter , Black is “in contention” to direct “Iron Man 3.” What’s more, he’d likely get a crack at penning a draft of the script too. Black is far from a lock to take over franchise directing duties from Jon Favreau though, and other filmmakers are being eyed as well. MTV News’ requests for comment to Disney and Black’s rep were not returned as of press time. While the possibility of Black taking on one of Marvel’s most valuable franchises is surprising — he has only one directing credit on his r

‘Glee’ Creator Ryan Murphy Being Eyed To Direct ‘Annie’ Remake

Murphy is being courted by producer Will Smith and Sony Pictures to helm the reboot of the movie musical, according to Dealine.com. By Terri Schwartz Ryan Murphy Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images With Will Smith looking to launch daughter Willow’s film career with a remake of “Annie,” it only makes sense that he would turn to the man who helped repopularize the musical genre for the American audience to help him. Enter “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy, who Deadline.com reports is in negotiations to direct the project. In addition to his work with “Glee,” Murphy is as highly regarded at Sony Pictures — the studio that’s overseeing the “Annie” remake — as Smith is, which is likely what helped him land the gig. He directed this past summer’s Julia Roberts drama “Eat, Pray, Love” for Sony and the studio was so impressed with him that they signed a $5 million deal for him to direct another picture with the movie star. And Murphy’s success with songs from musicals like “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Wicked” has led him to be courted to helm film versions of those productions as well. Smith developed “The Karate Kid” with Sony as a star vehicle for his son Jaden and its release last summer was considered a success. He followed up that ’80s remake with the concept to do a new “Annie” flick with his daughter in the leading role. Though she has not had significant acting parts before (unlike Jaden, who made prominent appearances in “The Pursuit of Happyness” and “The Day the Earth Stood Still”), the 9-year-old has found success as a singer with her pop hit “Whip My Hair.” Negotiations with Murphy reportedly are still in their early stages, but it is clear that Smith and Sony are trying to get the film under way as quickly as possible. The idea for the “Annie” project was only announced last month, but if Murphy does come on board, don’t be surprised if you hear the “Glee” kids singing “It’s a Hard Knock Life” in the near future. Do you think Ryan Murphy is a good choice to direct a new “Annie” movie? Share your opinion in the comments.

Kareoke Trailer for Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family Totally Lives Up to the Poster

After getting over the initial shock of seeing the amazing/terrifying Black Swan parody poster for Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family , you may have found yourself asking: “How will the movie possibly live up to that ?” I still don’t have a good answer to that, but can happily report that the trailer is every bit as ridiculous as the poster. I’m talking about a full-on Kareoke sing-along to a Madea single (“MA to the DEA “) and enough split-screen to embarrass Brian de Palma.

Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston Discuss Box-Office Showdown With Justin Bieber

Their ‘Just Go With It’ opens against ‘Never Say Never’ this weekend. By Eric Ditzian Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler at the “Just Go With it” premiere Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage NEW YORK — The palm trees, tiki-themed decorations and ocean-blue carpet at the Tuesday-night premiere of Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston’s “Just Go With It” didn’t fool anyone: Despite a tent meant to keep the winter at bay, it was freezing outside the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York, a far cry from the sunny Hawaiian clime in which much of the romantic comedy takes place. Yet Sandler, Aniston and their co-stars projected nothing but warm vibes as they made their way past a massive throng of photographers and toward an equally long line of TV and print journalists. Days from now, this new flick — a comedy of errors in which Sandler convinces Aniston to pretend to be his wife in a wild scheme to secure the affections of Brooklyn Decker — opens up against Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never.” This weekend at the box office is setting up to be a compelling clash between teen heartthrob and established big-screen players, but Aniston is approaching the whole thing blissfully unaware — or so she liked to joke when MTV News asked her about the face-off. “Who?” she asked when the topic of Bieber came up. Sandler stepped in with a little intro to the “Never Say Never” star. “Nice little kid. He sings,” he explained. “He grew up in front of our eyes. He’s a handsome boy.” “Very handsome,” Aniston added, suddenly finding herself with a case of Bieber Fever. For moviegoers on the fence this weekend, Sandler suggested catching a double feature at the multiplex. “We don’t start fights with people. You can go to both,” he said. “We’ll go to Justin’s movie. We’ll show some respect to that kid and his family — get him some more money.” “Yeah! I hear he’s hurting,” deadpanned Aniston. Others in the cast were more forthcoming about the prospect of opening up against “Never Say Never.” “It’s hard. We’re nervous,” Decker admitted. “I love myself some Justin Bieber, so I’m not going to bash anyone who goes to see that movie. I will say I love our movie!” Dave Matthews, who co-stars as Nicole Kidman’s absurdly pretentious husband, was even more blunt. “That’s going to blow everything out of the water. Justin Bieber is going to blow everything out of the water for a few years,” he told us. “That’s what I expect — and deservedly so. What better than Bieber to blow everything out of the water? I expect nothing but my daughter’s devotion to him and I will support it absolutely.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Just Go With It.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
