Toe Pick! Bourne Legacy’s Tony Gilroy (Fondly) Remembers His 1992 Olympic Skating Romance The Cutting Edge

Sure, he adapted the Bourne series, Stephen King’s Dolores Claiborne , 2009’s State of Play , and earned Oscar nods for writing and directing his own politically-tinged thriller, Michael Clayton – but any chat with The Bourne Legacy co-writer/director Tony Gilroy would be remiss without discussing his very first screenplay, amirite ? So without further ado, take a triple lutz down memory lane with Movieline and Gilroy as he recalls the joy of seeing his first produced script come to life. That’s right, lovers of Olympian sports sagas and ‘90s-era romance: we’re taking Gilroy back to The Cutting Edge . Gilroy earned his first credit with the 1992 romantic dramedy, about a high maintenance figure skater (Moira Kelly) and an ex-hockey star (D.B. Sweeney) who reluctantly pair up to compete in the XVI Olympic Winter Games. Despite underperforming at the box office, The Cutting Edge was a ‘90s staple that went on to enjoy a popular home video/cable afterlife, like so many films of the decade; the opposites-attract Taming of the Shrew -on-ice set-up proved so rich that ABC Family resurrected the brand 14 years later, spawning three more sequels, and was memorably spoofed in the Will Ferrell vehicle Blades of Glory . For most fans, the phrase “toe pick” vividly conjures the feisty chemistry between Kelly’s Kate Moseley and Sweeney’s Doug Dorsey. And though he subsequently launched full-bore into more heady, decidedly Tony Gilroy-esque terrain (2009’s Duplicity , perhaps, comes closest), Gilroy lit up when we brought up arguably his most cherished early work. So, we’ve got to talk about The Cutting Edge , a movie I loved and watched more times over than I can recall. Tony Gilroy: [Laughing] Were you a skater? No, but I was a girl! Gilroy: And there’s only one kiss in there! Talk about a chaste movie. All they get is one kiss at the end, in public. From that to this…? I can still say “toe pick” and people know exactly what I’m talking about. Gilroy: [Laughs] You’re making my day. How did you go from an Olympics-themed skating romance to the politically-charged, character-driven complex dramas you went on to write and direct? Do you see any throughline there? Gilroy: So many scripts! I always like to do something different, but I don’t know – it’s always the same, it’s always what’s right for the idea of the movie. What possessed you to write a movie like this in the first place? I’d written some very serious scripts before that, and I was so desperate to get a movie made that when I sat down with [producer] Robert Cort and he said, “You wrote this other movie and it’s this Preston Sturgess-esque kind of movie and I like the relationship between the two people, they’re always bickering — and I want to do a skating movie. Because every seven years there has to be a skating movie, and we’re due.” I go, “A skating movie? Well, if I write this, will you get it made? Because I’m tired of writing movies that don’t get made.” He was in a really powerful position at Interscope and he’s a great guy. He said, “If you write this, I’m going to make this movie.” So I poured myself into it and did everything I could not to get fired and stay on, and it was tremendous fun. Do you remember it fondly? Oh my god, yes. Visiting the first production office where your movie’s going, and walking in realizing there are 60, 80 people going to work because you sat in a room… it’s just the coolest. Idiocracy Spin-Off In The Works? Terry Crews Talks

Back in 2006 Mike Judge ‘s satire Idiocracy was legendarily screwed over upon release by Fox, who quietly dumped the underrated comedy with virtually no promotion and in just seven cities resulting in a paltry $444,093 domestic total. But the cautionary tale of an average Joe (Luke Wilson) who wakes up in an America populated by idiots went on to earn a cult following, featuring a scene-stealing turn by Terry Crews as five-time Ultimate Smackdown champion and porn superstar President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho — and as Crews tells Movieline, President Camacho may soon be returning in a long-awaited Idiocracy spin-off. Crews, who spoke with Movieline over the weekend while promoting Expendables 2 , has for years expressed a desire to revisit the Camacho character in a follow-up to no avail. Said Crews back in 2007 : “You know, it was a hard go the way Fox treated him and all that. It’s hard. But I would love, in any way shape or form, to play Camacho again. Believe me, that’s something I’m definitely going to talk about with him again. I’m just going to badger him and badger him until I can bring Camacho back in some form.” Well, Idiocracy fans, it looks like the badgering worked. Crews said Saturday that he’s had recent talks with Judge and Fox to bring President Camacho back in a new project. “Me and Mike [Judge] are talking right now with Fox about some Camacho stuff,” he told Movieline. “We literally met with Fox a week ago. It’s so cool.” This iteration of an Idiocracy spin-off will apparently be web-based, according to Crews. “We’re going to see what it becomes, but we got approval from Fox to do some stuff,” he said. “We’re going to start off on the internet and do some small interstitials with Camacho.” Crews is clearly excited to bring one of his best-loved characters back, though he and Judge will most certainly need those closeted Idiocracy fans to come out of the woodwork to voice their support. “We’ll see! We’ve just got to gauge the interest and Fox wants to start slow… you’ve got to let it take off.” So crack open a case of celebratory Brawndo (it’s got electrolytes) and raise a toast, and keep your fingers crossed that President Camacho’s return goes off as planned. Who knows, with enough fan support we might finally get that President Camacho prequel Crews had been hoping for … Who’s up for more President Camacho? Chime in below! Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Man of Steel Gets Teaser, Costume Hints at Comic-Con

Man of Steel enjoyed one of the more bonkers receptions at this weekend’s Comic-Con, culminating in — what else? — a teaser poster just for its San Diego coming-out party. They’ve thought of everything. It doesn’t reveal much of Henry Cavill’s Superman, however, which led Movieline pal Grace Randolph to hit up costume illustrator Phillip Boutte for more details about the look of Zack Snyder’s upcoming blockbuster. Click through for the poster and video.

RoboCop Remake Gets Fan Service Out of the Way Early in Viral Video

Paul Verhoeven and Ed Neumeier’s dystopian action-adventure flick RoboCop (which I was too young to realize was a satire upon release) rolled off the assembly line before viral videos had been invented. Just imagine if these. . .marginally clever distractions had existed back in 1987. Heck, I’m sure we’d all be offering bids on lots in Delta City “for a dollar!” The forthcoming remake of RoboCop (here you can take a pause to sigh, wonder why you are surprised that there’s a RoboCop remake coming, then continue on) launched its fake corporate site recently, hawking the wares from Omni Corp. Omni Corp – called Omni Consumer Products in the original – is the privatized company contracted with cleaning up the streets of Detroit using whatever bloody, brutal means necessary. RoboCop’s most famous scene is the presentation of the robot ED-209 in the OCP board room, wherein a computer glitch makes swiss cheese out of a poor schnook named Mr. Kinney. The producers of the new RoboCop , who’d’ve had nerds with pitchforks at the studio gate if ED-209 wasn’t in the pic, have included a version in the new continuity and are wisely revealing him now so we won’t have to sit and wonder when it will happen during the film. (Oh, if only Rise of the Planet of the Apes had thought of this before Draco Malfoy nearly gaffed-up the film with is “madhouse” and “damned dirty” line readings.) The design of the new ED-209 looks like a sleeker, pointier version of the original – like ED Senior mated with a Lamborghini. The video itself is on par with what we have come to expect from fanboy movies’ viral vids, but only teases what RoboCop himself will look like. All said, whoever came up with the line “we’ve got the future under control” definitely earned their pay that day. Previously: New RoboCop Joel Kinnaman discussed the “gritty” reboot with Movieline . What Did I Miss?

Hello! Remember me? Oh. Well, anyway, the world’s longest coffee break has ended, and as I nestle back into my Movieline work station, I hope you don’t mind me asking: What did I miss? No, really: What did I miss? Let’s talk about the last 38 days in movie culture, assuming “movie culture” still exists and isn’t off playing golf with a typewriter and a couple eight-track tapes in some Scottsdale retirement community. For the record, this is not an invitation to fill me in on the details of Tom Cruise’s “divorce” or Lindsay Lohan’s latest bout of “exhaustion,” but rather a helpful space where we can all discuss the good stuff that’s worth catching up with. Assume June in particular didn’t even happen for me and that I’m not going to see The Amazing Spider-Man no matter how highly anyone recommends it. What else is there? I mean, 4-D movie theaters ? Already ? It’s like another world out there.

Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed. When Melanie, one of the few remaining “wild” humans is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading “soul” who has been given Melanie’s body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn’t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Wanderer probes Melanie’s thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Instead, Melanie fills Wanderer’s mind with visions of the man Melanie loves—Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body’s desires, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she has been tasked with exposing. When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love. The Host , directed by Andrew Niccol and co-starring Diane Kruger, William Hurt, Jake Abel, and Max Irons, hits theaters on March 29, 2013.
