So Tell Me About Lone Star: A Movieline Premiere Week FAQ

“Son, this is a house of cards. You don’t get to live in it.” So says a con man father to his con man son in the pilot for Lone Star (premiering tonight at 9). But will you want to live inside the soapy Fox drama about the increasingly claustrophobic double life of a handsome Texas con man and the women he loves? That answer and many more ahead in the latest edition of Movieline’s Premiere Week FAQ.

So Tell Me About The Event: A Movieline Premiere Week FAQ

The pilot of The Event doesn’t end with one of the Hobbits saying “Where are we?” but that doesn’t mean things are crystal clear. Unless mud is considered “crystal clear” — in which case, mission accomplished. The latest attempt to find an heir apparent to Lost arrives on NBC tonight at 9 p.m. and brings with it more fanfare than any other pilot premiering this week. Does The Event have what it takes to find a spot on your DVR ? That answer and more ahead in the first of Movieline’s Premiere Week FAQ.

REVIEW: Producer-Writer Shyamalan’s Devil Short on Fun, Fright

If the devil is in the details, Devil could use fewer of them. Writer-producer M. Night Shyamalan’s planned series of spooky, seemingly family-friendly “Night Chronicles” begins with the world’s very first claustrophobic-whodonit-recovering alcoholic-boogie man-slasher-Christian morality tale. Devil packs a lot of business into 80 brisk minutes but is shockingly short on fun or fright. What should be a simple, fool-proof setup for a chiller of confinement — five strangers get stuck on a broken elevator and mysteriously start dropping dead — gets overwhelmed by enough incident and absurdity to make a Goosebumps fan roll her eyes.

Movieline was in the grip of madness this week, split as we were between two countries and smashed by the speeding onset of the fall movie and TV seasons. Click through and reminisce, and be sure to stop by this weekend for more of the smooth cultural stylings of Dixon Gaines. Have a good one!

On DVD: The Do-It-Yourself Yom Kippur Film Festival

It’s that time of year again — the time for atonement and repentance — and pretty much the last thing you’re supposed to do on Yom Kippur is watch movies. But we’re not all hardcore traditional, nor are we all even Jewish, and a holiday is a holiday, dammit. Here’s a few DVD -able ways to celebrate, if that’s what you want to call it…

It’s been a ball, but my time at Movieline has come to an end. I’ve been hired as the new Movie Editor for New York Magazine’s sterling entertainment blog, Vulture , and while I’m excited to move on, there’s plenty I’m going to miss.

Introducing the ‘Survivor Loser Review’: What Didn’t Flow with Wendy Jo?

If you’ve watched any of Survivor ‘s 19 previous seasons, you know its competitors talk mad sh*t, unleash defensive monologues at the drop of an Immunity Idol, and give the nuttiest confessionals in all of television (sorry, Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami ), but most importantly, you know that Survivor ‘s evictees often leave a trail of bad decisions about a mile wide. With that in mind, Movieline is beginning its weekly review of Survivor ‘s castoffs, hoping to shed light on the soundbites, actions, and missteps that have led to their demise.

‘Milky Mook’ Justin Long Compliments Movieline’s Own Michelle Orange on Her Going the Distance Pan

Do you remember reading Movieline’s scathing review of Drew Barrymore’s recent box office disappointment, Going the Distance ? Well, Barrymore’s costar Justin Long sure does, and he recited a particularly brutal excerpt from memory during yesterday’s episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon after tipping his hat to Movieline critic Michelle Orange.

EXCLUSIVE: Bo Burnham on His Newly-Announced Comedy Tour and MTV Show

It’s been a busy 15 months since Bo Burnham was featured by Movieline in The Verge , and movie roles, tours, network pilots, and Comedy Central specials have all followed. I spoke to the 20-year-old comedy songwriter just this afternoon, and he exclusively announced to Movieline his plans for a brand-new tour called Bo Burnham (No) Friends , which starts in October, the same month as his Comedy Central special, Words, Words, Words . Burnham told Movieline what to expect from his new tour — “weird” seems to be the answer — discussed his new MTV pilot, and imagined a world where Yo Teach! was a reality.
