The 9 Most Scathing Critical Responses to Chelsea Handler’s VMA Performance

Note to future Video Music Award hosts: Television critics are generally not fans of herpes humor, pre-taped sketches parodying sexual harassment, overtly sexual come-ons, one-liners about accidental pregnancies, casual racism, or any kind of material about your promiscuity and/or alcoholism — at least if you’re a female comedian. Take Movieline’s word for it, because Chelsea Handler learned the hard way. Read on for nine criticisms — from fair to downright hateful — of the first lady VMA host in sixteen years.

Passion Play Duo Mitch Glazer and Kelly Lynch on Their 20-Year Road to Toronto

So the winged woman-meets-jazz trumpeter romantic fable Passion Play premiered Friday night here in Toronto, and say what you will about the headscrather of a story, the vision of Mickey Rourke in a love scene with Megan Fox — with wings — or Bill Murray’s hairpiece-aided deadpan gangster cutthroat. But nearly two decades after screenwriter Mitch Glazer began developing his directing debut (inspired in part by his wife, actress Kelly Lynch), it’s ultimate realization — with this cast on this stage all at once — prompts one to ask what’s worth waiting 20 years for? I mean, even Avatar only took 12 or so. Glazer and Lynch met Movieline this weekend to discuss.

3 Sketches Amy Poehler Should Revive in her SNL Hosting Gig

Have you enjoyed SNL Day at Movieline? Look, it was an accident. We can’t help that there’s much to discuss about Jenny Slate’s departure , Lorne Michaels’ new hires , the greatest one-season cast members , and now Amy Poehler’s season premiere hosting gig. The Parks and Recreation star’s return to Studio 8H will no doubt be a successful one, but it could be sublime if she revived these three sketches.

Real Housewives of New Jersey Reunion Part 2: By the Numbers

Bravo closed the curtain on the Real Housewives of New Jersey ‘s second season last night, and there were tears, fake apologies, and (best of all) one dramatic weave-pull re-enactment courtesy of Andy Cohen and Danielle Staub. In the tradition of last week’s Real Housewives of New Jersey recap, Movieline is again applying the By the Numbers scorecard to Staub’s last episode on the series ever . Here are our findings:

REVIEW: Vanessa Paradis, Romain Duris Sparkle in Romcom-Done-Right Heartbreaker

American romantic comedies have become so dismal over the past 20 years that it wouldn’t be hard for even the Romanian film industry to show us up. I’m still waiting for the great Romanian romantic comedy (and hey, it could be out there), but for now, France saves the day with Heartbreaker, in which French-cinema heartthrob Romain Duris plays cupid in reverse: Friends and family members of women in lousy relationships hire him and his two-person team to incite a breakup. Duris’s character, a just-scruffy-enough smoothie named Alex, moves in on these women, flattering them, charming them, and otherwise boosting their confidence to help launch them out of these unhappy unions and get them on the road to better ones.

The Verge: Keir Gilchrist

As gay teen Marshall on United States of Tara , Keir Gilchrist often seems to be too preternaturally sensitive for the real world, and his lead role in the Toronto-premiering It’s Kind of a Funny Story (adapted from the Ned Vizzini novel by indie directors Ryan Boden and Anna Fleck) takes that personality type to its logical conclusion: His character, Craig, checks himself into a mental hospital after life seems like too much to bear. Gilchrist talked to Movieline about booking the role, improvising with costar Zach Galifianakis, and why he’s not a big fan of preparation.

VIDEO: Chris Evans Talks Captain America, Toddlers Falling Down

Chris Evans didn’t plan to sign up for so many comic book movies — really! So how did his superhero-studded career come together? The newly minted Captain America told Elle all about it, and Movieline has the first look.

Real Housewives of New Jersey Reunion Part 1: By the Numbers

Uh, so, who watched the first part of the Real Housewives of New Jersey reunion last night? It was an emotionally scarring, 75-minute display of primal Jersey rage punctuated by hair touch-ups, crocodile tears, and Andy Cohen’s sh*t-shirring questions . Because it was so spectacularly explosive, profanity-laced, and over-the-top, I decided to recap last night’s trauma by the numbers rather than using Movieline’s standard reality check format (because we can all agree that everything seen last night was very real, beginning with Andy Cohen’s fear). As Danielle would say, I promise this will be very “therapeutical” for everyone.

EXCLUSIVE: Piranha 3D Producer Rips James Cameron: ‘Jim, Are You Kidding or What?’

Who’s up for some good old-fashioned, bareknuckle producer fisticuffs? After hearing last weekend that James Cameron was not especially pleased with the work Piranha 3D did with its three-dimensional coed-munchers, Movieline checked in today to see if the film’s producers might want to respond. And did they ever.

The 9 Most Scathing Critical Responses to January Jones’s Emmy Style

Listen, I am no fashion critic, and Movieline’s “9 Most Scathing” feature very rarely extends beyond the realm of terrible new films . I also know our female celebrities face an endlessly difficult challenge of finding a balance between classic red-carpet appeal and envelope-pushing couture. So in that regard, I tip my cap to January Jones, whose Emmy look in Versace represented an eye-popping embrace of risk, presence, glamour and about 80 or 90 discarded blue mylar balloons. True, Jones’s de-accessorized, bedheaded, train-for-days style had its fans. But its critics are speaking a little louder today, and, well, they’re right. Read on for a noteworthy cross-section.
