Please Stop Giving Racist White Women Adorable Nicknames

I t started out as just another viral video: A white woman named Alison Ettel saw Jordan Rodgers, an African-American girl, selling water near AT&T Park in San Francisco. Rodgers was trying to earn money for a trip to Disneyland. Ettel was caught on camera calling 911 and the video was soon spread across social media. A meme was born . Alison Ettel, CEO of weed dispensary Treatwell Tinctures, calls the police on an 8-year-old girl for selling water. She profits from a drug that put so many people of color behind bars, yet still tries to harm a little black girl. For water. #PermitPatty pic.twitter.com/WJRzfJglhh — Eugene Gu, MD (@eugenegu) June 24, 2018 A few weeks later an Oakland woman called the police on a group of Black people having a cookout. Again, her face was plastered on every social media outlet, photoshopped in different scenarios and even parodied on SNL. She was given the moniker of BBQ Becky . At first, the seemingly weekly moments and memes doubled as mindless comedy combined with ways to shame the white women for their racism. But it’s time to stop it. Because, in the end, these nicknames and memes are only shielding white women from real consequences they should get for putting Black lives in danger. READ MORE: Cornerstone Caroline Investigated For Falsely Accusing Black Child Black people comprise roughly 13 percent of the United States population but make up more than 23 percent of people killed by police. Black men and women have 6.6 to 1 odds of being killed by police while unarmed. Police are more likely to use excessive force on Black people. And so on. So it’s clear that calling the police on a Black person is effectively putting that Black person’s life in danger. Everyone knows this, including the white people who erroneously call police on Black folks. White people who call the police on Black folks don’t just want us removed from their sidewalks or their parks or their cookouts or their neighborhoods. They want us dead. And they know that calling the police on us is going to heighten their chances of those dreams coming to fruition. Take, for instance, the story of Jeremiah Harvey. He was in a New York corner store when his backpack brushed up against a white woman named Teresa Klein. She called the police claiming that the boy groped her. She’s been given the nickname “ Cornerstore Caroline .” How adorable. The problem here is that Harvey calling the police for believing a boy groped her recalls the infamous case of Emmett Till , a boy accused of whistling at a white woman, Carolyn Bryant Donham . She alerted a mob of white men — not that far off from a modern-day police force, depending on whom you ask — who went on to lynch Till. Klein was engaging in a tried and true American tradition of using stereotypes of over-sexualized Black men to aid in the deaths of said Black men. This isn’t an act that should just garner alliterative nicknames and social media memes because that’s letting these perpetrators off the hook. Here’s a question? Without scrolling up, do you even remember Permit Patty’s real name? What about Cornerstone Caroline? Barbecue Becky? Giving them nicknames is providing aliases that cover the names of real women with real racist motivations to commit real harm to real Black people. America has functioned under the premise that white women are innately innocent and harmless in the history of anti-Black violence despite overwhelming historical and present-day evidence to the contrary. Guarding women with nicknames and comedy will surely embarrass them in the short-term, and, in the case of Ettel, she stepped down from her post as a CEO. But do you think she has gone un-hired since? What true recourse has she seen? What true contrition has she been forced to show? Like many others I was disturbed when the news reported #TeresaKlein falsely called the cops on a 9 year old black boy. One of the ways I plan to combat this issue in our community is by introducing Senate Bill S9150 https://t.co/QHatyNGYsm @JeffCMays #CornerstoreCaroline pic.twitter.com/RBZUskS8e0 — Senator Kevin Parker (@SenatorParker) October 13, 2018 There need to be precedents set to make sure these anti-Black violent offenders face more than just a handful of days of embarrassing memes. If there aren’t going to be laws that penalize these people for their calls — something I’m skeptical of, as such a law would be asking police to side with an innocent Black person over a white person, which doesn’t usually garner great outcomes for us — then we have to find ways to hold these white people accountable. So, yes, say their real names as often as possible. Make the world know that anyone who hires them or does business with them is choosing to engage with someone with a clear disregard for Black lives. Whatever you do, leave the cute nicknames for situations that are actually funny, because there’s never any comedy involved when Black boys and girls get police called on them. Here’s Who We Would Cast In An All Black Live-Action Remake Of ‘The Little Mermaid’

What is your favorite thing about Ariel? pic.twitter.com/phHfJJmr0l — The Little Mermaid (@TheDisneyAriel) January 20, 2014 Back in 1923, Walt and Roy Disney founded The Walt Disney Company and ninety-five years later it’s still going strong. In fact, Disney has been making headlines after announcing plans to reimagine The Little Mermaid as a live-action film. The animated musical fantasy is a favorite for ’90s kids, so of course all our grown behinds have intense opinions about who should star in the remake. Rumor is Zendaya and Lady Gaga are being considered for the roles of Princess Ariel and Ursula, respectively—Zendaya’s cool but Black Twitter had other ideas for Ursula, namely, she should be a BBW. We ain’t mad at that! Nahhhh, Ursula was a BBW or a drag queen. Don't try and ruin this as well. Urgh, slightly over it with the Disney live action remakes atm https://t.co/QxP7dRlM8t — Nola Marianna Ojomu (@NolaMarianna) October 16, 2018 Let’s take a look at the original cast. There’s Princess Ariel, an antsy teen who’s tired of life underwater in the kingdom of Atlantica. There’s her dad, King Triton, who lays down the law—with love; Flounder, Ariel’s adventurous but nervous BFF; Sebastian, the crab who serves as the King’s most trusted advisor; Prince Eric, the dreamy human being Ariel is willing to risk it all for; and of course Ursula, the trifling evil sea witch who tries to scam Ariel out of her voice. We have some ideas on who else could do these characters justice. Get into our list below and let us know if you agree. Princess Ariel Source: Apega/WENN.com / WENN Yara Shahidi – Can you imagine having the ever so woke Grown-ish actress swim up to the surface of the sea to reveal those curly locks and million dollar smile? We can. Source: Brian To/WENN Chloe or Halle Bailey –  We wouldn’t be mad at Disney casting either one of these gorgeous sisters for the role of Ariel. From their luscious locs to their beautiful singing voices, we think they’d be perfect. King Triton Source: Ron Asadorian / Splash News Will Smith – Who better than the Fresh Prince to play King of the Sea and father to Princess Ariel? Will Smith would not only do the original role justice, he’d add his own comedic twist to the remake and look zaddy-ish while doing so. Prince Eric Source: Dia Dipasupil / Getty Luka Sabbat – Luka plays Yara Shahidi’s Prince Charming on Grown-ish and we can’t get enough. We actually really want to see this happen. Source: Earl Gibson III / Getty Bryshere Y. Gray – Ladies love Bryshere as Hakeem Lyon on Empire— he could definitely do this role justice. Source: Tony Forte/WENN Shameik Moore – Oh heyyy Shameik…another fine brother that would make the perfect prince for Ariel. Flounder Source: John Shearer / Getty Caleb McLaughlin – This Stranger Things actor is the sweet young guy we need as Ariel’s BFF. Source: Frederic Kern/Future Image/WENN Jaden Smith – Or, maybe Ariel’s BFF needs a little edge the second time around. Jaden, you free? Sebastian Source: George Pimentel / Getty Kevin Hart – Sebastian was a key role in the animated film, playing the King’s most trusted advisor while also doubling as Princess Ariel’s sidekick and babysitter. This has Kevin Hart written all over it. Source: Leon Bennett / Getty Mike Epps – OR, would his arch nemesis Mike Epps be a more hilarious baby sitter? Ursula Source: Robin Marchant / Getty Mo’Nique – Oh man, Mo’Nique would kill this role. Hands down. Source: Getty Jill Scott – We can definitely picture a villainous Jill Scott scamming Ariel out of her voice with no remorse. Source: Splash News / Splash News Eryka Badu – People know better than to play with Erykah Badu in real life, so we’d love to see her play the villain in The Little Mermaid . Plus, look at her. Cheyenne Floyd Shocks Fans With Heartbreaking News About Daughter

In many respects, the ladies of the Teen Mom franchise have it much, much easier than most young single moms. After all, they enjoy six-figure salaries from relatively cushy jobs that generally don't require them to spend much time away from their children. But the ladies of Teen Mom seem to be cursed with a virulent streak of bad luck as well — and sadly, the newest cast member is no exception. It's only been three weeks wince Cheyenne Floyd joined the cast of Teen Mom OG , but already, her sad story has earned her the sympathy and support of a legion of new fans. Here's the latest on Floyd's frightening situation: 1. A New Face After gaining a modicum of fame on MTV shows such as Are You the One?, Cheyenne made her official Teen Mom OG debut at the start of the show’s eighth season. 2. Mixed Feelings At first, fans were conflicted about the addition of Cheyenne to the long-running MTV series. 3. Big Shoes to Fill Many were happy to see the fired Farrah Abraham replaced by just about anyone. 4. The Critics Others pointed out that Cheyenne was not one of the original girls (or “OGs”) of the Teen Mom franchise, and wished that producers would leave well enough alone. 5. The Moms of Teen Mom The other moms seem to have embraced Cheyenne with open arms, which is important, as the mother of one will need all the support she can get in the difficult times ahead. 6. A Sad Revelation On a recent special introducing fans to the new moms (Bristol Palin also joined the cast this season), Cheyenne revealed some shocking news about her 1-year-old daughter Ryder. Paul Allen’s Relationship With Black America, Explained

A s the nation mourned the passing of Microsoft co-founder and NFL and NBA franchise owner Paul Allen , family, friends and fans were sharing memories of his life, including his relationships with African-Americans. Allen, who died from complications of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in Seattle on Monday afternoon, was 65 years old. Known for his work to innovate technology and with Vulcan, his network of philanthropic organizations and efforts, the billionaire philanthropist was also the owner of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and NBA’s Portland Trailblazers. Because of the two sports teams, Allen had many interactions with African-American athletes, including Colin Kaepernick , whose case accusing NFL ownership of colluding to keep him from playing has moved forward in court. He was 65. https://t.co/LebtXe8j77 pic.twitter.com/mPeKaB2zP1 — ABC News (@ABC) October 16, 2018 Kaepernick visited with the Seahawks in May of last year, many months after he was released from the San Francisco 49ers following his social justice-based kneeling protests in 2016. The Seahawks then  reached back out to Kaepernick to schedule another visit this past April at a time when many people of color felt the quarterback was being blackballed from the league. The Seahawks brought Colin Kaepernick in once, and talked to him about coming in for a second visit. Owner Paul Allen was deposed. So was Pete Carroll, per @bcondotta Talking it now on @1029TheGame @ESPN960 @KORE1050Eugene — John Canzano (@johncanzanobft) August 30, 2018 Many in the nation acknowledged the team’s meeting with Kaep under Allen’s ownership, however, the Seahawks ultimately didn’t sign Kaepernick. After releasing a statement of support for Kaepernick, the team canceled a workout with him in April when Kaepernick didn’t answer their question about his plans to continue his National Anthem kneeling protest. @seahawks here is our statement in support of our players. https://t.co/9U7jX9Ofrc — Paul Allen (@PaulGAllen) September 24, 2017 Headlines also acknowledged that the free agent’s lawyers had also reportedly called on Allen and other team owners for depositions  in the collusion case. Allen gave $100,000 to the GOP last month in order to help Republicans keep their majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. His donation drew criticism from activists who pointed out that the NFL doesn’t support Black communities enough even though African-American players make up the league’s majority. Activists had asked the league to start depositing funds into Black-owned banks, as well. Aside from the sports world, Microsoft co-founder had also been credited with making contributions to some organizations supporting people of color, including  Adelante Mujeres , a grassroots organization that works to educate and empower Latina women and their families. He had also pledged to donate $100 million to fight Ebola , a disease that has ravaged the Black populations in West Africa. Allen also was applauded for investing in cultural institutions in Seattle and revitalizing parts of the city . However, some social media users emphasized that the major developments had opened the door for gentrifying Seattle, a practice known as a factor in driving African Americans out of certain neighborhoods. Allen never married and had no children. U Mad?: Melania Trump PR Flack Calls For Boycott Of T.I. Due To Stripper Lookalike

Source: screen cap / Twitter Melania Trump , the self-called most bullied person in the world, has a beef with T.I. The Africa-visiting First Lady, well actually her PR rep, is calling for a boycott of T.I. after the rapper posted a video of a lookalike stripping in the White House.  Dear 45, I ain’t Kanye. pic.twitter.com/BCS8nkbn1M — T.I. (@Tip) October 13, 2018 On October 12, T.I. shared the above clip with the caption “Dear 45, I ain’t Kanye,” on Twitter. T.I. is seen in what looks like the Oval Office while a woman that looks a lot like Melania Trump is seen busting it open. Just in case you can’t make the connection, the stripper is also rocking the same “I Don’t Care, Do U?” jacket that Melania admitted she used to troll the media. The clip itself is a promotional video for T.I. just released new album, Dime Trap . The Associated Press reports that Melania Trump’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, is calling for a boycott of the rapper. Yeah, good luck with that. We’re not going to act like the woman in the video wasn’t objectified, though. But we will point out the irony of Team Trump having a beef considering Donald Trump’s…existence. The trolls got trolled. But please, tell us what you think in the comments. Tyler Baltierra: I’m Simply "Miserable" in My Marriage

Tyler Baltierra and Catelynn Lowell are currently in a great place. Like, a REALLY great place: The couple is expecting a baby ! But the Teen Mom OG stars had to overcome many obstacles to get here, most notably Catelynn's struggle with her mental health and related trips to rehab. On the October 15 episode of this MTV hit, Tyler seemed to hit rock bottom. He opened way up about how he viewed his marriage and his romance, confessing some difficult feelings to his friends and to his wife. Scroll down for a look at what Tyler once said about his relationship… in order to fully appreciate where it is now. 1. To Reiterate: All is Good Now! Tyler and Catelynn announced their unexpected pregnancy in mid-September. They could not be more excited to welcome the little boy or girl into their world in March. 2. That is Now. What About Then? This episode of Teen Mom OG was taped many months ago. It centered on the couple sitting down for an appearance on Dr. Oz, before which Catelynn spoke to Dr. Mike Dow. 3. And What Did This Doctor Say? He told the Catelynn that he was proud of her for opening up about her mental health issues to help eliminate the stigma against people who are suffering from similar problems. From there, Lowell admitted she was having trouble staying away from people who were NOT understanding her situation. 4. The Trolls are Everywhere “I cant even go on Twitter right now,” she said. “People are ruthless, they think that I’m just running away from my problems or not wanting to be a mom. I’m not running away from my problems, I was fixing my problems and trying to get better so I could be a better mom.” 5. Baltierra Weighs In… Tyler told his wife – to her face – that he wanted her to take better stock of the influence her time in rehab took on him. He suggested she watch past Teen Mom OG episodes in order to see the toll her depression has had on their marriage. 6. The Bombshell Drops Tyler then got brutally candid, saying on air: “I’m gonna be really very honest. I feel like I’m not too happy right now. I’m identifying that I feel pretty miserable.” He said this to his friends. View Slideshow

‘LHHHS5’ Recap: Teairra Mari’s Sex Tape Scandal Flip Flop Makes No Sense

Source: Jason LaVeris / Getty Tonight’s episode of Love and Hip-Hop Hollywood revolves around people realizing that Marcus and Brooke are carrier pigeons, meaning, they have loose lips. It’s also about Teairra Mari looking super crazy for still keeping in contact with Akbar after all that he (allegedly) did to her. Hold that thought, though. Tonight’s episode picks up with Marcus kicking it with A1. Of course, he tells A1 about what RoccStar said at Ray J’s Father Figure Fridays situation. You remember, right? RoccStar alleges to have slept with Lyrica. A1 says he has decided to move forward so it is what it his. In other news, A1 and Lyrica are having a gender reveal. Marcus is invited, but Brooke is not, as per Lyrica (later on, Lyrica invites Princess Love to her gender reveal but not Ray J). No messies allowed. Then, A1’s mother crashes their lunch and she’s not happy (and water is wet). Marcus senses her attitude and leaves them alone. Mama A1 is there to tell him about the reboot of the beef that she has with Lyrica’s mom and she wants A1 to get a DNA test. A1 doesn’t trip though. He’s trying to live his best life, reconciled with his wife. Then we get to Teairra Mari’s crazy situation. Basically. Nikki gathers her girls together to kick it post London and Moniece fills her in on the tension with Teairra. Teairra shows up just as Moniece is chatting about her. TT gets tight, but Moniece explains how she saw video of Teairra Akbar dropping TT off at the airport in Texas. Someone was sitting behind their car recording this entire thing. This is nuts. Teairra says she did still love him and that she went for closure only to find out that he was just trying to finesse her so that she would drop the lawsuit. Then she says this is none of their business anyway. Moniece, Nikki and La’Britney are just looking at her like… Because if you recall, TT dragged them into it and some of them were even at the press conference. Nikki confronts Solo Lucci at the studio to confront him about the rumors he has been spreading about sleeping with her. La’Britney is there to support her and RoccStar was already there kicking it with Solo Lucci. You know the supporting friends are sitting there like: Because…nosey. Anyway, Nikki immediately starts going in on him calling him a poser while Solo Lucci is firm in his stance that he did have sex with her and it’s a game of he said she said. Nikki just gets frustrated and dumps a bag of money before sashaying out. Solo Lucci and RoccStar discuss how Nikki got this info from Brooke and that Brooke feeds Marcus tea and they’re both just some gossip spreading fools. They confront him later on and he starts copping pleas. Yeah, this isn’t going anywhere yet, but Brooke and Marcus are about to be messy exiles if they keep playing. TT also gets a chance to confront Brooke and the general consensus is that TT is ridiculous no matter how you swing it, especially since Akbar claims that they’ve had sex again and that it’s also on camera…again. TT denies this but again, her word is not her bond from what we can tell. Now we’re at Lyrica and A1’s gender reveal. Family and friends show up to support the couple and even their moms manage to get along as Lyrica and A1 squirt blue water at each other via water guns. Yup, it’s a boy! Tonight’s episode ends with Teairra Mari sitting on a bench all dramatic-like. She texts Akbar saying she wants to talk, and he replies, telling her to name a time and place. Lordt. But we’ll have to wait and see what happens next week. Kanye West Is Back On Twitter Talking About Mind Control, Can’t Buy His Publishing

Source: SAUL LOEB / Getty That didn’t take long. After a short hiatus, Kanye West is back on Twitter, talking about “mind control.”  Yeezy has taken his coon tour to Uganda , and yesterday (Oct. 13) he posted while in the African nation. In the 9-minutes clip West talked about being controlled by social media and the need to get more like. He also said he took an IQ test and that they were MENSA level. One, we need to see those IQ test results for ourselves, for fact checking purposes of course. Two, the irony that he’s complaining about social media, on social media. Three, Ye said he brought a house that he can never finish. Four, he says he tried to buy his publishing from Sony/ATV, but he couldn’t despite having the money. Five, someone please breakthrough Mr. West’s stubbornness (about taking his meds, reading, etc.) and tell him to chill, for his own sake. Also, here’s a choice quote: “I’m not worried about any type of blog or social media, y’all already saw was a lie. Social media told you that Hillary was going to win, but she didn’t win. Social media told you that people didn’t like me, but everybody loves me. Everybody loves Ye!” Umm, who’s going to tell him? Peep Yeezy’s lengthy diatribe on “unprogramming your minds” and “positive energy” below. More on the flip. Mind control https://t.co/YDYXQ45bDL — ye (@kanyewest) October 13, 2018 — Photo: Getty

CNN Panel Cracks Up At Kanye West’s Coon Campfire With President Trump

Source: SAUL LOEB / Getty News outlets looking for any reason to spin Kanye West ‘s meeting with President Donald Trump as something important led to a hilarious moment last night (Oct. 10) on CNN . Former South Carolina state representative Bakari Sellers threw some shots at Token Yeezy’s visit with the Orange Overlord of Chaos, which caused fellow panelist Scott Jennings, who is white, to react with his eyebrows that had host Don Lemon cracking up. Mediate reports : A CNN panelist Tuesday night called Kanye West “the token Negro of the Trump Administration.” The remark was as part of a discussion about the news that West will meet with Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday — a visit which comes after the rapper’s most recent shows of support for the president. CNN’s Don Lemon asked his panel — which featured liberal commentator Bakari Sellers, conservative commentator Tara Setmayer, and conservative commentator Scott Jennings — for their take on whether this lunch will be about policy or celebrity photo-ops. The outlet points at Sellers saying, “Kanye West is what happens when Negroes don’t read,” with Setmayer explaining to Jennings it was a reference to a Chris Rock joke. Setmayer then made a reference to Dave Chappelle’s racial draft skit in regards to West, which Jennings excitedly said he knew of as an apparent fan of the show. Lemon gamely tried to hold his composure although he was less successful than some may have hoped. Sellers has been catching some backlash online too, going toe-to-toe with fellow Trump broom pusher Candace Owens. Oh Candace, bless your heart. Kanye is what happens when negroes don’t read. He actually admittedly chooses not to. We could have a conversation about anti-intellectualism, CJ reform or any topic I covered last night, but your Trump talking points might not be well equipped. https://t.co/SzfU6Bjvji — Bakari Sellers (@Bakari_Sellers) October 10, 2018 Watch the CNN clip below. . @Bakari_Sellers : “My issue with Kanye West is quite simple — is that anti-intellectualism simply isn't cool.” https://t.co/FVeCRODqXl pic.twitter.com/rhH5nWSubZ — CNN Tonight (@CNNTonight) October 10, 2018 — Photo: Getty
