Amanda Knox Signs $4 Million Book Deal

Amanda Knox, the American college student who spent nearly four years in an Italian jail for murder, only to have her conviction overturned, is read to tell her story. And be paid handsomely for it. The international drama that unfolded on TV and in newspapers is now about to be told from the inside, in a subjective and profitable account, by Amanda Knox herself. Knox, who was freed last fall after her conviction in the murder of Meredith Kercher was thrown out, has sold her book to HarperCollins for what is said to be $4 million. “It is a story everyone else seems to have told except for the person at the center of it all,” Jonathan Burnham, the publisher of HarperCollins, told The N.Y. Times . “There has been plenty of rumor and conjecture about her, the role she played in events, and speculation about what happened. This book will tell the full story from her point of view for the very first time, and it will be told in her own words.” Amanda Knox, 24, kept prison diaries, the newspaper reports. In addition, her former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito , who was also cleared in the killing of Meredith Kercher, is said to be preparing to sell his own memoir. UVA Lacrosse Murder Trial: George Huguely Defense Says Yeardley Love Died By Accident

Former University of Virginia lacrosse teammates of George Huguely V testified against him as the prosecution wrapped its case in his murder trial this week. Meanwhile, the defense brought its first witness , a doctor who said Yeardley Love, his fellow lacrosse player ex, died of suffocation, not blunt force trauma. Jan Leestma, a neuropathologist, contradicted the prosecution’s medical witnesses, saying he saw swelling on Love’s brain but no sign of blunt force trauma. “I could not conclude it is trauma,” he said. Instead, he suggested, she suffocated on a bloody pillow. The lack of oxygen to her brain likely caused the swelling, he claimed. Moreover, the rush of blood during resuscitation attempts caused the bruising. The prosecution argues that George Huguely murdered Yeardley Love in a May 2010 incident in which he shook her violently until her head banged a wall. The defense says it was a tragic accident, and that Huguely’s actions did not directly kill Love, his on-and-off girlfriend at the University of Virginia. One of the final witnesses for the prosecution, Ken Clausen, a former lacrosse teammate of Huguely’s, testified Wednesday that Huguely had lied about where he had been when he returned home from Love’s apartment the night in question. Clausen said that George Huguely’s demeanor had changed and that he was so drunk he wasn’t making any sense, Thursday’s Today show reports. Clausen said Huguely, now 24, claimed he had been downstairs in an apartment with two other teammates. But Clausen later discovered that wasn’t true. Other teammates also testified that Huguely had been drinking heavily all day, and that he had a blank stare on his face when he returned that night.

R.I.P. Ben Gazzara

Stage and film veteran Ben Gazzara, whose career spanned five decades and included a stint directing television, has died at age 81 in New York. According to The New York Times , Gazzara succumbed to pancreatic cancer today in Manhattan, where he lived. Let’s bid a fond farewell to the Emmy-winning, Golden Globes-nominated Gazzara by remembering some of his most indelible work. After getting his start in the 1950s in television and on stage in productions like Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 1955, for which he originated the role of Brick. Film highlights include Otto Preminger’s Anatomy of a Murder (1959), although he may be best known for his collaborations with John Cassavetes ( Husbands , The Killing of a Chinese Bookie , Opening Night ) and later highlights in Road House , Buffalo ’66 , The Big Lebowski , and Todd Solondz’s Happiness . For me and many of my generation the Gazzara role I’ve rewatched a zillion times is his turn as Jackie Treehorn in The Big Lebowski ; Click here for the film’s memorable (but nonembeddable) Jackie Treehorn scene and let’s take a brief hopscotch through the actor’s filmography over the years.

Joran van der Sloot to Appeal Prison Sentence

Joran van der Sloot was sentenced to 28 years for the murder of Stephany Flores, but the killer is hoping to win an appeal and shorten that time dramatically. “He is appealing his sentence and hopes he gets parole in less than five years,” an insider revealed , meaning he could walk out a free man as soon as 2017. He hasn’t won anything yet, but that would be a fraction of the sentence that was handed to him on January 13 after he confessed to the May 2010 killing. The 24-year-old Dutchman’s lawyer, Jose Luis Jimenez, filed an appeal last week claiming that the three judges did not take into account his plea of guilty. After being transferred from a more lenient Castro Castro prison to the maximum security Piedras Gordas, Joran has experienced several health problems: “His health has suffered and he is not doing well there. Joran blames the food and the water, he says that he is depressed and feeling weak all the time.” Hearts are weeping around the world, no doubt. Joran’s home is considered one of the harshest places in the Peru, but many observers likely feel that even a full sentence at Piedras Gordas is not long enough. He is, after all, the prime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, who went missing in 2005. She was declared legally dead earlier this month.

Eff A Lil Young Thug: 10-Year-Old Charged With Murder For Murking His 12-Year-Old Friend

This is sad: Prosecutors filed murder charges Wednesday against a 10-year-old boy accused of fatally stabbing his 12-year-old friend in an East County neighborhood. A detention hearing for the boy is planned for Thursday morning in Juvenile Court. Ryan Carter, 12, was stabbed in the chest about 1:15 p.m. Monday in the driveway of the younger boy’s home in the 12500 block of Royal Road in the unincorporated Winter Gardens area, near El Cajon, according to sheriff’s officials. Paramedics took Carter to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, where he died about 2:30 p.m., Lt. Larry Nesbit said. The alleged killer’s name was withheld due to being a juvenile. Glen Carter said his family is coping with their son’s death and has mixed feelings about the murder charge. “It’s just sad for both families. This is going to be tough to get through,” Carter said. “It’s up to the courts now.” The suspect’s age will play a factor in the trial. The judge could require the 10-year-old to undergo mental evaluation which could take up to eight months before the trial could move forward, a criminal attorney told Fox 5. The attorney said the suspect’s parents are not at fault, but could face civil action. The suspect, who was reportedly being medicated for aggressive behavior problems, was being held in Juvenile Hall while prosecutors reviewed the case. Jesus Take The Wheel: Los Angeles HS Soccer Star Killed By Crazy Slorish Classmate And Her Jealous Boyfriend

This is so sad. The killing of a promising high school football player in California was “personally motivated,” police say, though authorities are still not specifying a motive. Police announced the arrests Tuesday of Jason Schumann, 24, of Calabasas, and Elizabeth Ibarra, 19, of Los Angeles. Both were taken into custody Monday for investigation into the murder and were being held on $1 million bail. Both have extensive criminal records and are on probation, police said. While police would not specify a motive, the Los Angeles Times, citing sources, said it may have been over a love spat. The newspaper said Rodriguez may have been involved with a woman with a jealous “male friend.” Francisco Javier Rodriguez, Jr., a 17-year-old soccer goalie at El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills, was shot Jan. 11 shortly after returning home from a game. Relatives said Rodriguez was killed after answering the door and stepping outside, where a red-haired woman had been seen. Police believe Ibarra lured Rodriguez into the front yard when he was shot. Ibarra apparently dyed her hair dark brown following the shooting, authorities said. Apparently this Ibarra broad is a piece of work…check out pics and shady Facebook statuses on the flippy…

Tupac Created ‘Juice’ Character From Life Experience

‘Bishop didn’t make Tupac; Tupac made Bishop,’ Treach tells ‘RapFix Live’ 20 years after film’s release. By Rob Markman, with additional reporting credit by Sway Calloway “Juice” Photo: Paramount When “Juice” was released 20 years ago on January 17, 1992, the performance of noted rapper but first-time actor Tupac Shakur took critics by surprise. The socially aware, politically driven MC lit up the screen as fiery, gun-crazed thug Bishop. It was a departure from the rapper hip-hop had come to know through more positive songs like “Brenda’s Got a Baby.” A year after “Juice” premiered, ‘Pac went on to release his second album, Strictly 4 My N.-.-.-.A.Z., before experiencing legal trouble, then a serious rap beef with the Notorious B.I.G. a few years after that and, of course, his murder in 1996. Some believe that after “Juice,” Tupac took on the persona of the fictional and troublesome Bishop, and as a result, his life experienced a downward spiral. Not the case, said ‘Pac’s friend, “Juice” co-star and Naughty by Nature rapper Treach. “I would definitely disagree with it,” Treach said without reservation when he appeared on Wednesday’s (January 18) episode of “RapFix Live.” “Bishop didn’t make Tupac; Tupac made Bishop.” Treach — who appeared in the film and, along with Naughty by Nature, contributed the ’90s rap hit “Uptown Anthem” to the movie’s soundtrack — revealed that he originally read for the role of Bishop. Things didn’t go so well, however, and when Shakur auditioned immediately after him, Treach knew his buddy would get the film’s starring role. Tupac’s mother and father were both members of the Black Panther Party, and Treach believes that ‘Pac’s exposure to the progressive and militant movement helped prep him for the role.”He grew up a soldier; he grew up learning different lessons on the streets that not even I had known about,” he said. “He knew different stuff from different facets of life,” Treach added. “That’s what made him be able to get into that character like that and make that character seem so real, because he had his own life experiences that made him phenomenal at bringing that out through the music and through the film.” What do you think of ‘Pac’s performance in “Juice”? Baz Luhrmann, Warner Bros. Really Stretching the 3-D Evangelism for Great Gatsby

If you’ve had enough of the 2011-12 awards season by now (and sweet Jesus in a pie-eating contest, who hasn’t?) can the NY Times interest you in next year’s race? That’s where filmmaker Baz Luhrmann has turned to continue his early stumping on behalf of The Great Gatsby , the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring megabudget adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jazz Era masterpiece. Er, sorry — the megabudget 3-D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jazz Era masterpiece. Which, in 2012, is probably redundant, but hey. The NYT confirms Gatsby ‘s budget around $125 million — “before government rebates,” of course, which still likely delivers a film in the low nine figures (to say nothing of its marketing budget). We all can likely agree that that is an insane amount of money to spend on adapting a renowned story that you can probably read faster than you can watch, or on an updating preceded by at least two failed adaptations and featuring just one bankable star. Nevertheless, by factoring 3-D into the equation, Luhrmann has both insured his film against devastating, Australia -style box-office losses and — thanks in part to the NYT and particularly to his partners at Warner Bros. (whom I’ll get to in a moment) — spun an equally pragmatic path on the Hollywood high road. But while it’s never too soon to hype (I guess?), is Luhrmann really doing himself any favors by likening his Gatsby not to Avatar , not to Hugo , but rather to a 58-year-old Hitchcock effort that virtually no one’s actually seen in 3-D? To examine the potential of actors in 3-D without the gimmickry of contemporary action sequences, Mr. Luhrmann turned to Alfred Hitchcock’s 3-D version of Dial M for Murder , from 1954. It wasn’t easy. He found only two projectors, one in New York, one in Burbank, Calif., that could still play that film. The sensation of moving through it with Ray Milland, Grace Kelly and Robert Cummings sealed the deal — both for himself and for Mr. DiCaprio and the troupe, who also studied the Hitchcock film. “It was like theater,” Mr. Luhrmann said. Burbank, Calif.? Would that be the same Burbank where Warner Bros. is headquartered — the very studios where Hitchcock shot Dial M all those years ago? And would that be the same Warner Bros. that holds the rights to not only Dial M but also Gone With the Wind and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King , to which Gatsby is compared here as a film that “might also supply what has been missing in the Oscar season — the heat of a film that decisively breaks a barrier”? And the same Warner Bros. playing a little preemptive Oscar politics after failing to keep DiCaprio and J. Edgar at this year’s awards-season forefront? Whose domestic distribution president told the Times that “[a]dult interest in 3-D has ‘settled into a very, very good place'” yet couldn’t coax anyone over 25 into seeing its bloated 3-D Green Lantern ? That Warner Bros.? I see. Anyway, this may yet turn out to be the greatest literary adaptation since The Godfather and may yet succeed in Luhrmann’s quest to “make it feel like you’re inside the room” (which, I dunno, is why I go to plays?), and may yet succeed in righting both Luhrmann and Warner Bros.’s ships after weathering pricey, stormy dalliances with prestige, and may yet sweep the 2013 Oscars (in which case I hope someone remembered to cast Uggie ). But has so obviously and self-servingly faking the 3-D funk ever really worked? Seriously, I’m asking. This just feels… off .
