Busted: 7 NYPD Officers Face Court For Prostitution & Gambling Ring Involvement

(Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images) Seven NYPD cops will have to answer to the court on Thursday for charges related to a prostitution and gambling ring. According to CBS2 , the officers are accused of providing protection, including info about ongoing investigations, for illegal gambling and prostitution locations in Sunset Park, Brooklyn and Jackson Heights, Queens. The suspects are identified as Sergeants Carlos Cruz, 41; Louis Failla, 49; Cliff Nieves, 37; Officers Steven Nieves, 32; Giancarlo Raspanti, 43; and Detectives Giovanny Acosta-Rojas, 40; and Rene Samaniego, 43. They face charges of promoting prostitution and enterprise corruption. Sources say the Internal Affairs Bureau began investigating in 2015. They were tipped off by another officer. Since then, sources say investigators have obtained thousands of hours of surveillance, including wiretaps of the cops allegedly involved. In a statement, NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill said the accused officers “swore an oath and then betrayed it.” He continued, “The people of this Department are rightly held to the highest standard, and should they fail to meet it, the penalty will be swift and severe. I thank Deputy Commissioner Joseph Reznick for the thorough investigation performed by the Internal Affairs Bureau, in partnership with the Queens District Attorney’s Office, in rooting out this illicit activity. His unit initiated this probe and in doing so has sent a clear message: there is no place in the NYPD for criminal or unethical behavior.” More sources say a retired NYPD detective was arrested as a “major player” in the operation. Two more uniformed officers were put on modified desk duty, and their guns and badges were taken away. More than 40 civilians are also said to be wanted for their involvement in the illegal activities. The Queens County District Attorney will lead the prosecution of the case. More info will be revealed in a press conference expected for Thursday afternoon.

No Justice For #WalterScott: Mistrial Declared In Michael Slager Murder Trial

SMFH…. Mistrial Declared In Walter Scott Case The South Carolina officer who gunned down Walter Scott as he ran away has escaped a conviction. A jury decided that they couldn’t unanimously convict former officer Michael Slager who was seen on tape shooting Scott in the back. A single juror caused the mistrial when he told the Judge and the prosecution that “I still cannot without a reasonable doubt convict the defendant. I cannot and will not change my mind.” According to ABC News , the jury was also allowed to consider a voluntary manslaughter charge but failed to convict on that charge as well. All is not completely lost however, Slager also faces a federal trial next year. Walter Scott's mom reacts to Slager mistrial: “It's not over! Y'all hear me? It's not over 'til God say it's over!” https://t.co/J54RiABFFl pic.twitter.com/QDivSHM22Y — CBS News (@CBSNews) December 5, 2016 Are you even remotely surprised at the results of the Micahel Slager trial??

BREAKING NEWS: Bobby Shmurda Denied Lower Bail Again, Trial Delayed

Bobby Shmurda’s mugshot The “Hot N***a” Rapper’s Gang Conspiracy Trial Now Set To Start In 2016 A judge denied troubled rapper Bobby Shmurda ‘s latest request to lower his $2 million bail after his gang conspiracy trial was once again delayed until next year. The trial for Shmurda, real name Ackquille Pollard, will now start Feb 22 to give the defense more time to go over the prosecution’s evidence. The trial was supposed to start Oct. 5, but lawyers instead met with the judge to hash out the new court date. The “Hot Ni**a” rapper has been locked up for almost a year on charges that he led GS9, a violent gang that terrorized Brooklyn with shootings and drug dealing. He appeared briefly Oct. 5 in Manhattan Supreme Court, smiling at his mother in the audience as cops brought him in front of the judge. Judge James Burke denied a request by Shmurda’s new lawyer, Alex Spiro, to slash his client’s $2 million bail after Special Prosecutor Nigel Farina argued that Shmurda was dangerous and had the money and out of state connections to skip town. But Spiro countered that Shmurda’s net worth was just $400,000, he didn’t have a criminal record and there was no evidence that he’d actually hurt anyone. “I don’t believe he should have to sit in jail for what seems like another six months, waiting for trial,” Spiro said. Judge Burke denied the rapper a lower bail at least four previous times, Farina said. Although Shmurda earlier this year rejected an eight year plea agreement, Farina said there was still time to make a deal. He said investigators have since found Shmurda’s DNA on a sweatshirt and hat used in a shooting last January. “This case has gotten increasingly more convincing,” Farina said. “The evidence has gotten stronger, not weaker.”

Charges Against Officers Accused Of Killing Freddie Gray May Get Dropped Due To “Insufficient Evidence”

Charges Against Baltimore Police Who Killed Freddie Gray Could Be Dropped Marilyn Mosby’s announcement that the six police officers responsible for Freddie Gray’s death would be brought up on homicide charges for their actions was a relief to many. But unsurprisingly, the Baltimore Police’s own investigation into the death of Freddie Gray doesn’t support the homicide charges brought forth by the state attorney — giving their attorneys grounds to move for dismissal. Via CNN : The Baltimore police investigation into the death of Freddie Gray doesn’t support some of the charges, including the most serious, filed by the Baltimore City State’s Attorney, potentially allowing lawyers representing the police officers the opportunity to undercut the prosecution, according to officials briefed on the separate probes conducted by the State’s Attorney and police. Already, defense attorneys are filing motions seeking to exploit differences between the separate state attorney and police investigations. Lawyers for two officers have challenged a key finding of State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby’s case: that a knife found on Freddie Gray was legal in Maryland and therefore the officers didn’t have a right to arrest Gray. The police investigation found that the knife is illegal under Baltimore city code. Officials familiar with the probes also say the homicide investigation run by police investigators at most contemplated a manslaughter charge, not second degree murder as Mosby charged one of the officers, Caesar Goodson. To win conviction for murder, prosecutors must prove intent to kill. Manslaughter relates to unintentional killings. SMH! We knew it was only a matter of time before the police department tried to find a way to wiggle out of these charges…

No Justice For Trayvon: Rachel Jeantel Speaks Out – Blames Herself “A Little Bit” For Racist Murderer George Zimmerman Walking Free [Video]

Rachel Jeantel Blames Herself For George Zimmerman Verdict R.I.P. Trayvon. .. Via Mediaite: It’s been just over a year since the world was introduced to Rachel Jeantel, the friend of Trayvon Martin’s who testified on behalf of the prosecution in the George Zimmerman murder trial, but may have ended up doing more harm than good. CNN caught up with Jeantel this week, asking her if she blamed herself when Zimmerman went free. “A little bit,” she replied. Asked if she should have said something different or acted differently on the stand, she answered, “Act different.” Jeantel said the jurors in the case didn’t take her seriously as a witness, judging her for the way she looks and talks. While Jeantel’s reading level was not above that of a third grader last summer, she has since turned her life around, undergoing intensive tutoring and graduating from high school this spring. She now credits the turnaround to her experience with the trial, saying she kept her word to Trayvon Martin to complete her high school education. Do you agree with Rachel? Perhaps GZ would be locked up if she would have acted differently??? Watch the video below and discuss… CNN

Ho Sit Down: Ohio Mom Convicted Of Cooking Baby In The Microwave Wants A New Trial

So the baby climbed in the microwave by herself? Mom Convicted Of Microwaving Baby Wants New Trial China Arnold, 33, the Ohio mother serving a life sentence for murdering her 28-day old daughter by placing her in a microwave to cook her in August 2005, is seeking a new trial, which would be her fourth in this case, reports CBS News . Via NewsOne reports: Arnold’s defense attorney, Christopher Thompson, argued that multiple errors were made in her previous trials and she should receive another one without the death penalty as an option. Read more from CBS: Arnold, 33, was already tried three times, with the death penalty a possibility each time, in the murder of her daughter, Paris Talley. Her first trial in February 2008 ended in a mistrial and her second trial ended in September 2008 when she was found guilty but the jury could not decide on the death penalty. Montgomery County Common Pleas Judge Mary Wiseman imposed a sentence of life in prison, but that decision ultimately was overturned on appeal in November 2010. Arnold’s third trial ended in May 2011 when she was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a jury did not vote for the death penalty. As previously reported by NewsOne, Arnold’s second conviction was overturned by the Second District Court of Appeals in Dayton after the prosecution’s star witness admitted she lied when she testified that Arnold had confessed to putting her baby in the microwave. How about building a human size microwave and putting her in it. Continue reading

Andrea Sneiderman Sentenced to Five Years in Prison For Perjury, Making False Statements

Andrea Sneiderman was led out of a DeKalb County (Ga.) Superior Court in handcuffs after being sentenced to five years in prison this week. Andrea Sneiderman Convicted of Perjury Her husband, Rusty Sneiderman, was gunned down and killed in the parking lot of a day care facility in 2010 after taking his son to class there. A jury found Sneiderman guilty Monday of nine of 13 felony counts, including perjury and making false statements to police during their investigation. Lawyers for Sneiderman talked Tuesday of seeking an appeal of the verdict and getting her before the parole board in as little as two months. “We believe we have multiple grounds for appeal,” said Doug Chalmers of his client’s prospects. “This is a fight Andrea Sneiderman is going to win.” Prosecutors alleged that Andrea Sneiderman had had an affair with her former boss at GE Energy, Hemy Neuman, who was convicted of fatally shooting Rusty Sneiderman. Andrea Sneiderman did not testify, but her testimony during Neuman’s trial played a role in her conviction. She testified in Neuman’s trial against the advice of many. “I was shocked when the prosecution began attacking me,” she said. “I fought back, and I tried to defend myself. I’m embarrassed when I watch the tape of my testimony.” Sneiderman and her supporters had asked the judge for leniency after the prosecution sought a prison sentence of 20 years. It was not to be. She got five years on each count, which are set to run concurrently. “No one’s ever gone to prison for perjury,” said J. Tom Morgan, one of Sneiderman’s attorneys. “It is even lower than the lowest level on the grid.” Sneiderman showed no emotion as she was being led out after a morning of testimony by her and others. She said her only regret was allowing Neuman into her life. “I never thought Mr. Neuman was capable of murder,” she lamented. “The line of appropriate conduct was blurred,” she acknowledged, while insisting there was never any sexual contact between the two. “I thought I could handle him. I thought he was a man just being a man.” The brother of Rusty Sneiderman said his sister-in-law deserves it. “She thinks she’s special, but she’s not,” Steve Sneiderman said. “She’s a common criminal. She lied to her family. She lied to her friends. She lied to Rusty.” “Without her lies and betrayal to her death, Rusty would still be here with his children,” he said. “A very special man is gone because of her actions.”
