Amber Portwood: Can She Stay Clean?

Troubled (or perhaps reformed?) Teen Mom star Amber Portwood was released from Indiana’s Rockville Correctional Facility after 17 months behind bars Monday. Her brother Shawn, with whom she is close, took to Twitter with an encouraging status update on his 23-year-old sister’s release from the big house . Amber Portwood Released From Prison After 17 Months “Amber is out and looking better than she ever has because she is clean (of drugs) and healthy,” her wrote. “It’s time to start a new chapter. #Iloveyousis.” “I think I speak for everyone when I say we all are [rooting for her],” he replied to a tweet from Sharon Bookout, mom to Portwood’s co-star Maci Bookout. “But after spending the day with her I know she will be OK.” We all do hope that’s true. But with a history like Amber Portwood has, it’s far from a given. Can she make the most of this next chapter, as Shawn says? She earned a combination of earned credit time for good behavior and completion of programs, which resulted in her period of incarceration being reduced. That bodes well, given that 17 months is not a small length of time to be locked up, even if it’s considerably shorter than her five-year prison sentence. Still, it will take a major life turnaround to put this chapter behind her for good. Saying all the right things and doing them over time are very different. You tell us, THGers, in the comments and poll below: Amber Portwood: Can she stay clean?   Yes! She’ll be a new woman! Not so sure about that. View Poll »

Dr. Conrad Murray Death Threats: Off the Hook Since Release!

Dr. Conrad Murray has been receiving more death threats than he can count since his release from jail, and the FBI is investigating at least some of them. A group of Michael Jackson fanatics is believed to be responsible. The threats have been targeted at both Dr. Conrad Murray and Murray’s lawyer, Valerie Wass, who called out fans who threatened Murray before: “One blow to the head is all you need.” If you think MJ fans are insignificant … you are dead wrong, DEAD wrong.” (A direct response to her quote about the late singer’s fans) “Better get that hair brushed and be ready because [Michael Jackson] fans will be everywhere setting yours and Murray’s lies straight.” Fans are going after Wass because Murray is in hiding, but also because she confronted a screaming fan who claimed that Murray was a murderer. Wass fired back, after Murray’s release from prison , “If you were not so ignorant, you would know he was not convicted of murder!”  And she continued to rant. Wass also remarked after her infamous client’s release that the crazed Jackson fans are “annoying, but insignificant.” That comment did not go over well. The FBI is currently on the case.

Lawsuits: Jury Finds AEG Not Liable In Michael Jackson’s Death

Michael is turning in his grave. Jury Finds AEG Not Liable In Michael Jackson’s Death This lawsuit has had so many twist and turns from AEG’s CEO claiming he spoke to Michael’s ghost to the Jackson’s attorney claiming AEG was ruthless. The sad part is AEG will never be held accountable for pushing a man who clearly was not 100 percent healthy and had no business performing. According to TMZ The Jackson family just LOST their bid to hold AEG Live accountable for Michael Jackson’s death. The jury ruled AEG Live did hire Conrad Murray. That’s huge. The jury then ruled Conrad Murray was NOT unfit or incompetent to treat MJ. Katherine and the kids lose. So here’s the thing. The question that ruined Katherine’s case was whether Murray was competent to handle Jackson when he was hired, and the jury said he was. Ironically, a jury in the criminal case ruled Murray then went off the rails and did things that ultimately killed MJ. But because he was competent at the outset — the Jackson family lost. Katherine Jackson and Michael’s 3 kids were suing AEG, claiming the company negligently hired and supervised Dr. Conrad Murray and pushed MJ way beyond the limits for his “This Is It” tour. AEG claimed Michael hired Murray and what went on between them was a secret to all … including AEG. The real losers here are Katherine and the children. This verdict is a slap in the face to kids who had to relive this drama. Dr. Conrad Murray was half the problem…AEG needed to be punished for milking the cash cow to the limit. R.I.P. Conrad Murray Leaves Paris Jackson Bizarre Pay Phone "Letter"

Dr. Conrad Murray, the man serving a prison sentence for his role in Michael Jackson’s death, has left a bizarre message for Paris Jackson. Dr. Conrad Murray Today Interview: Don’t Blame Me!

Dr. Conrad Murray is – again – proclaiming innocence when it comes to the death of Michael Jackson, telling Today in a phone interview that he’s not to blame. Murray also says he hopes to practice medicine again some day. Even if he can legally pull that off, we can’t exactly envision the patients lining up … Conrad Murray on Today Speaking with the NBC morning show, Murray did say that he’s sorry Michael Jackson died, but he still says he is in no way responsible for his death. Murray is sticking to his story, which did not play well with a jury in his manslaughter trial, that Michael Jackson killed himself with a fatal dose of Propofol. Conrad is also potentially a key figure in the MJ wrongful death suit , though he has insisted he wants no part of that when it comes to either side. The doc, who’s serving a four-year prison term, says he did not appeal it to shorten his sentence – though he would no doubt take it – but for another reason: So he can restore his medical license and see patients again. Again … we’re all for second chances and all, but … no.

Andy Murray Cries During Wimbledon Runner-Up Speech

Andy Murray’s Wimbledon runner-up speech left the tennis star in tears Sunday afternoon, and likely had more than a few onlookers welling up, too. With girlfriend Kim Sears, along with Kate and Pippa Middleton , looking on, Murray wept in a post-match interview following his loss to Roger Federer. When a BBC interviewer asked him about the emotions he felt over the fortnight, he (and Sears) broke down while the Centre Court crowd applauded …

Reality TV Hits the Cannes Red Carpet

Reality TV is getting the Cannes treatment at the world’s premiere film festival. Italian director Matteo Garrone (pictured above right with actor Nando Paone) brought Reality to the fest’s competition, following up his critically acclaimed gangster pic Gomorrah several years ago. The film centers on a village fisherman who sacrifices everything for the perceived chance to become a reality-television celebrity. After being persuaded to apply for the Italian version of Big Brother , Luciano gets a follow up interview in Rome. He is initially reluctant to pursue the role, but after an interview he thinks went well, Luciano begins to believe he’s in the running for the series. After returning to Naples, he begins to believe he’s still “being cast” as he goes about his daily life. Soon, he lives as if he’s already on the show. A chance meeting with people from Rome turns into an “incognito casting session,” and soon it gets worse as he loses sense of actual reality. “After Gomorrah , I was waiting for a theme that would be as powerful,” Garrone said in Cannes on Friday morning. “I wanted a surprising film, but after Gomorrah , I didn’t realize I’d be hitting a brick wall.” The film is chock full of thematic takeaways, including the religious metaphor that through good works, one can achieve paradise: In the film, Luciano begins to give up his worldly possessions, believing the people secretly watching him will be charmed by his selflessness — much to the horror of his family. Reality could also be an indictment of the meteoric rise of reality television itself over the past decade, though Garrone said the film takes a neutral stance — at least officially. “We shot the film without trying to be critical in any way,” he said. “The main character is like a modern day Pinocchio. One can always re-invent this story. We were thinking of Pinocchio as we were making this film… People can read into this story what they like.” Still, Garrone alludes to some vague overriding associations. “In Rome he finds some kind of redemption,” he noted. The cult of fame topic is not new to modern Italian cinema. Back in 2009, Erik Gandini brought his documentary Videocracy to the Toronto International Film Festival. The film explores how celebrity worship and the quest for television stardom has threatened Italian democracy itself, turning the country into a culture of banality. Garrone’s Reality does not overtly condemn society on that level, but there is enough wiggle room to formulate conclusions. “We wanted to simply tell a tale that’s close to the people,” Garrone said. “We weren’t trying to critique politics or society. We follow this character and then he loses his inner identity and goes mad.” Read more of Movieline’s Cannes 2012 coverage here .

Bill Murray and the Moonrise Kingdom Cannes Tween Dance Party

Ain’t no party like a Bill Murray dance party? Vulture had a front row seat at Cannes : “At the request of [ Moonrise Kingdom co-star Jared] Gilman, who just had his bar mitzvah and has a taste for dub-step, Bill Murray led the troop onto the dance floor, where the four kids and their accompanying man-child wiggled and jumped around with abandon. It was a scene of such next-level adorability that nearly everyone in the immediate vicinity pulled out a camera phone. ‘We’re just chilling! We’re just chilling!’ Murray shouted out as he put the kibosh on each video in turn. Then he’d go back to more happy wriggling to songs like ‘I’m So Excited.'” [ Vulture ]
