O Music Awards To Celebrate Online Creativity — Voting Starts Today!

Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and their die-hard fans are up for awards at April 28 event. By MTV News staff Photo: MTV The typical awards show is packed with performances, celebrity appearances, red-carpet arrivals and, at some point, the presentations of the night’s biggest prize, usually just before the credits roll. The O Music Awards ? Not so much. The first-ever edition of MTV Networks’ latest awards extravaganza will take everything you know about awards galas, throw it in a blender, mash it up with an obscure black-and-white cartoon from the 1940s, add a Kanye West beat under it and maybe some adorable LOLcats and a snippet of “Friday” on top, post it on Twitter and watch it go mega-viral. Instead of just honoring the singers, songwriters, directors and producers who make our favorite digital-music products, the O Music Awards will dig deeper in such categories as Innovative Music Video, Fan Army FTW, Funniest Music Short, Innovative Artist, Must Follow Artist on Twitter, NSFW Music Video, Most Viral Dance, Best Independent Music Blog, Best Animal Performance, Best Performance Series and more to dig up the people behind your favorite online music and videos, professional, amateur or just plain awesome. Voting begins today (April 5) on the O Music Awards website , and like the best viral memes, it will be simple, social and transparent, with fans encouraged to vote via social media through a mobile voting wap site. You can follow the top vote-getters in the categories on a real-time leader board in the run-up to the April 28 event. Performers and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks. And unlike those other awards shows, the night’s biggest trophy might be handed out before the broadcast, during it or even after, to keep the conversation going. “There will be an event, but it won’t be a traditional awards show with a host, audience and a bunch of celebrities,” promised Shannon Connolly, vice president of music strategy for the MTV Music Group. “It will embody what the O Awards celebrates, which is being very interactive. We’ll have live performances, mash-ups, collaborations and it will be a Web event that will take place not just on MTV Music Group sites.” Lady Gaga and Odd Future’s Tyler the Creator lead with three nominations each, followed by Kanye West, the Flaming Lips and Nicki Minaj with two nominations apiece. Additional nominated artists include Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Justin Bieber, Lil B, Wiz Khalifa, Robyn, OK Go, Katy Perry and iamwhoiam. Notable nominees include Antoine Dodson/ Gregory Brothers (Funniest Music Short), the Lonely Island (Funniest Music Short), Funny or Die (Funniest Music Short), 50 Cent, Rebecca Black and Bert (Favorite Animated GIF), the Hype Machine (Best Music Discovery Service), Pandora (Best Music Discovery Service), Tiny Desk Concerts (Best Performance Series), Gorilla vs. Bear (Best Independent Music Blog) and Marshall Jones (Best Music Hack). Fans will definitely be front and center, with an entire category devoted to the Best Fan Cover, the most rabid online fan following (which will pit 30 Seconds to Mars’ Echelon against the Beliebers, Katy Perry’s Bandaids, Gaga’s Little Monsters and the followers of My Chemical Romance, Nicki Minaj, Tokio Hotel, Wiz Khalifa, Rain and Rihanna). There are also nods to the Best Fan Forum, Best Music Hack and Best Animal Performance. The Innovative Artist race is a tight one as well, including such nominees as the Flaming Lips, iamwhoiam, Kanye, Gaga, Lil B, Radiohead and Tyler the Creator. You’ll have to choose between the Dougie, the Pony, Lil B’s Cooking Dance and the “Whip My Hair” boogie in the Most Viral Dance category. In keeping with recent digital-music innovations from MTV Networks like MTV Hive and the Music Meter , Connolly said it was apparent that the time was right to create an awards show that moved at the speed of the Net. “Music consumption has never been greater, and it’s hugely important to our audience,” she said. “We felt like the time was right to look at the convergence of technology and music fans and the YouTube celebrities who’ve created this new ecosystem where music is exploding.” Voting starts today for the O Music Awards . Make your voice heard!

Who Will Design Kate Middleton’s Wedding Dress?

Sorry, Phillipa Lepley . A new name has emerged as the leading contender to design Kate Middleton’s wedding gown. Now London’s Sunday Times and Daily Telegraph are both reporting that Sarah Burton (from the house of Alexander McQueen) has earned the honor. “The design of the dress [will] be a combination of Miss Middleton’s own ideas and Mrs Burton’s quirky interpretation of high fashion,” states the Telegraph , adding that Burton was “chosen for the discretion afforded by her relatively low profile, as well as for her alternative take on elegance.”

Phil Collins Retires from Music Business

Following decades in the music business, Phil Collins has called it a career. The British artist says he suffers from hearing problems, a dislocated vertebra and nerve damage in his hands, all due to years and years of performing. “I’m not worried about not being able to play the drums again, I’m more worried about being able to cut a loaf of bread safely or building things for my kids,” the father of two tells FHM . Considering the state of the business, with singers such as Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift dominating the charts, Collins also doesn’t think he fits in any longer, saying: “I look at the MTV Music Awards and I think: ‘I can’t be in the same business as this.’ I don’t really belong to that world and I don’t think anyone’s going to miss me. I’m much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely.” But Collins will maintain at least some ties to pop culture: his daughter, Lily Collins, is dating Taylor Lautner.

Lady Gaga Hair Affair … or Nightmare?

If there’s one thing Lady Gaga knows, it’s eye-opening fashion. If there’s a second thing, it’s outlandish hairstyles. Okay, cranking out hit songs is up there too. We’re focused on the singer’s hair-raising fashion here, however. At the MuchMusic Awards, Gaga paired a braided bustier with a nice shaggy hair skirt and bag.

Dr. Dre ‘Didn’t Even Get A Chance To Finish’ Leaked Song ‘Under Pressure’

The Doc laments online leak: ‘It’s just one of the things we have to deal with in the business today.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Dr. Dre Photo: MTV News Dr. Dre fans got a taste of his long-awaited Detox LP a couple of weeks ago when “Under Pressure,” a track featuring Doc collaborator Jay-Z , leaked online . Too bad it wasn’t the real deal. The next day, Dre released a statement saying that the track was “incomplete” and that “when it’s ready, you’ll be hearing it from me.” Recently, the beatmaking legend further explained that the leaked song was still in its early stages and lacked Dre’s renowned polish. “I didn’t even get a chance to finish the record,” Dre told HardKnock.tv in a video interview at the ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Music Awards on Friday. The hitmaking icon, who was honored with the society’s Founders Award , said that a lot of work still remained on the version of the hotly-anticipated collabo that hit the web. “The vocals are real rough, it’s not blended right … a hook is not even on the song. It’s not done. The music isn’t done.” Dre, who was being honored for his game-changing career, also lamented the reality of digital leaks that the music industry must now contend with. “It’s just like one of the things that we have to deal with today in the business,” Dre said. “Because of technology and the Internet and all that, it’s like, real easy for somebody to steal your sh–. What can you do?” However, Dre remains focused on the task at hand and said that he planned to hit the lab after collecting his award that night. “I’m leaving this event, going right to the studio, I’m gettin’ it crackin,'” said Dre. The Doc said he’s looking to get Detox to fans by the end of 2010 and is working to make sure that it’s worth the wait. “[I’m] trying to put it out by the end of the fall. Trying to give everybody what they’ve been waitin’ for and make sure they’re not disappointed; that’s all I’m doing.” What do you think of “Under Pressure”? Sound off in the comments below! SCRAM: Lindsay Lohan Alcohol Monitor Goes Off!

Has Lindsay Lohan lost her battle with the dreaded SCRAM device? Her court-ordered alcohol-monitoring bracelet/anklet was trigged Sunday evening during an MTV Music Awards afterparty, according to a People source. Dun-dun-DUNNNN! It remains unclear if alcohol was detected in her system or Lohan’s ankle bracelet was tampered with – either would alert authorities. Man. The actress may face jail time if the judge in her case rules that the star violated the conditions of her bail, abstaining from alcohol among them. The ankle monitor must be kept on in accordance with her probation as well, and she must submit to random drug testing (she passed both so far). Will Lindsay end up in jail? [Photo: Splash News Online] Judge Marsha Revel is expected to receive a report on why the SCRAM went off soon, the source says, and could order Lohan’s bail revoked immediately. Lindsay is out on bail after missing her last probation hearing, which stems from her past DUI arrest. Got all that? Her rescheduled hearing is July 6. Let’s be fair: It’s possible the device triggered a false positive somehow, and she’s trying to go clean . SCRAMs have been known to, it’s not uncommon. But come on, is anyone buying that? She went to an after-party after one of the biggest partying events of season. And come on, it’s Lindsay Lohan . It may be moot now, but who will prevail?

Ricky Martin, Other Latin Celebs Agree: Arizona Sucks!

If you’re a legal immigrant in Arizona, walking down the street with your child, you may now get stopped by the police solely based on the color of your skin. While it seems incomprehensible that such a law could be passed in the United States, it’s a sad fact. It’s also one that Shakira spoke out against yesterday and then actually headed down to Phoenix to discuss in person with the mayor and other locals. Turns out, she isn’t the only celebrity (or American with a conscience) to object to this law. At last night’s Billboard Latin Music Awards, Ricky Martin said the ruling “makes no sense” and then went off on inequality in general: “You are not alone. We are with you. Put a stop to discrimination. Put a stop to hate. Put a stop to racism… Long live love, long live peace.” The singer himself came out of the (obvious) closet last month. A few others on hand also chimed in on the issue. Said Latin Artist of the Year winner, Larry Hernandez: “It’s regrettable that they are discriminating against for the simple fact of looking Latino. It’s not fair. We have to say no to that law.” Meanwhile, at a Phoenix press conference, Arizona native Linda Ronstadt stated: “Mexican-Americans are not going to take this lying down.” It’s a contentious issue, one many Americans don’t understand: this is racial profiling at its worst. Imagine if all African-Americans were detained and searched simply because there are more blacks in the system on drug charges than whites. It’s the same idea. Sound off with your thoughts now!
