The Black Eyed Peas Define Innovation Before O Music Awards Debate

Most Innovative Music Video award will be handed out live Monday at 4 p.m. ET during online roundtable. By MTV News staff will.i.am Photo: MTV News On Monday, in a roundtable debate , the first-ever O Music Award will be handed out: Most Innovative Music Video. For weeks, fans have been voting for their favorite boundary-pushing, genre-expanding clip over at the O Music Awards site , and come Monday (at 4 p.m. ET on OMusicAwards.com and MTV.com), they can watch as a winner is crowned — after some spirited debate from producer/ Global14.com creator Jermaine Dupri, acclaimed video director Wayne Isham, Mashable’s Brenna Ehrlich and MTV News’ James Montgomery. We’ll also be hearing from a host of acts who know a thing or two about innovation — including the Black Eyed Peas, who have melded hip-hop, pop and dance music into a sound that is uniquely theirs and have pushed the boundaries of music videos at the same time. So we decided to ask them to describe what innovation means to them. And, not surprisingly, they went all the way back to the early days of MTV — during the first reign of the King of Pop. “There would be no MTV if it wasn’t for Michael Jackson,” will.i.am said. “If you think about it, ‘Billie Jean’ and ‘Thriller’ &#8212 all those songs &#8212 it was right around the time the video, it boomed. It was the first Internet, right? The idea of a visual, coupled with audio, and it was the first time you would see your favorite artist who was played all over the radio that told you to go see the concert. “So the video amplified concerts, it amplified the song on the radio, it created a business to where we were given MTV songs to play our video,” he continued. “It was a great business. ‘Check this out: I’m going to play the stuff you pay to make.’ … That is the best thing in the world.” And from Michael Jackson to today, the Peas see a clear line of inspiration — one that pushes the medium of the music video forward, through nothing more than sheer innovation alone. “It makes you really inspired to see people like Missy Elliott. She always had amazing videos. Ludacris, Busta Rhymes … Marilyn Manson is one of my favorite video stars; I’m always stuck like glue to the screen when he presents a video, because it’s just interesting, and it’s creative, and it’s really showing a peephole into his world,” Fergie said. “And I think that’s what it is with a video: You’re getting a peephole into a moment of an artist’s life, to present the visual with what you do sonically.” The O Music Awards debate for the Most Innovative Music Video, presented by Fuze, will stream live on OMusicAwards.com and MTV.com at 4 p.m. ET on Monday. The inaugural O Music Awards will stream live from Las Vegas at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on OMusicAwards.com . Jennifer Lopez Poses With Lil Wayne On ‘I’m Into You’ Video Set

New photos show the pair all dressed in black and mugging for the camera on set. By Jocelyn Vena Jennifer Lopez and Lil Wayne Photo: Gilly Iyer What happens when Jennifer Lopez and Lil Wayne shoot a video together? Well, according to two new stills from the “I’m Into You” video set, the two take it very seriously and dress all in black. In one photo, J.Lo is seen standing in a very little black dress and thigh-high boots, looking fiercely into the camera. Wayne is standing next to her, also in all black, checking the time on his watch. In another shot, the pair stands back to back, in the same outfits, both looking like they are deep in thought. The video is set to drop on May 2, a day before J.Lo’s album Love? hits the street. Previous photos from the video set show the “American Idol” judge in a much more exotic locale at Chichen Itza in Mexico. At Chichen Itza, the singer was spotted sitting atop the steps of the historic pyramid, glaring seductively, with her legs crossed, as a camera crew hovers below her. She was wearing a long snake-print sundress with matching bracelets and headband. Another on-set photo shows Lopez in a metallic two-piece, showing her midriff and legs. “I’m Into You” is the second single off her forthcoming album. She climbed to the top of the charts with the first single, the RedOne-produced, Pitbull-assisted dance song “On the Floor.” When she’s not busy being a dance diva, Lopez is judging talent on “Idol,” shopping a new reality show and gearing up to perform at the Billboard Music Awards. Are you excited for the new J.Lo and Lil Wayne video? Tell us in the comments!

Rihanna Addresses ‘X Factor’ Rumors

‘It’s something that I would have loved to do,’ singer says on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Michael Tran/ FilmMagic Rihanna was rumored to be a potential judge on “X Factor,” alongside Simon Cowell and her former label boss L.A. Reid . However, the songstress confirmed to Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday (April 13) that while there were discussions about her joining the show, she couldn’t put her career on hold long enough to commit. “I just heard about it actually, but, yes, it’s something that I would have loved to do, actually. But our schedule doesn’t allow and it’s a demanding schedule to be on that show. You have to be around months at a time, which is impossible for me.” What was easier to schedule was getting Britney Spears on the remix of her track “S&M.” “It was automatic; it was a go. She was great, really professional,” she said of the track, which was released earlier this week. “I think that’s what makes this collaboration so successful: It’s two female artists within the same genre of music. We have similar sounds. It’s very unexpected to see two artists collaborate and get together. The fans are really appreciative of that.” She added that while the song is “very provocative,” she thinks people need to take the lyrics and redirect the message to be about something more than just sex. “When I first heard this record, I automatically knew those words didn’t mean [that] … it was about my love-hate relationship with the media,” she explained of the message, one that Spears can also certainly relate to. “I knew what the song was to me and I wanted to make that point in the video. The video got banned in a lot of countries even though I didn’t think it was that raunchy. I thought it was fun and quirky. I really didn’t expect the song to go this far.” Rihanna’s upcoming busy schedule includes performing at the Billboard Music Awards next month and co-headlining the V Festival with Eminem in the U.K. this August. O Music Awards To Celebrate Online Creativity — Voting Starts Today!

Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and their die-hard fans are up for awards at April 28 event. By MTV News staff Photo: MTV The typical awards show is packed with performances, celebrity appearances, red-carpet arrivals and, at some point, the presentations of the night’s biggest prize, usually just before the credits roll. The O Music Awards ? Not so much. The first-ever edition of MTV Networks’ latest awards extravaganza will take everything you know about awards galas, throw it in a blender, mash it up with an obscure black-and-white cartoon from the 1940s, add a Kanye West beat under it and maybe some adorable LOLcats and a snippet of “Friday” on top, post it on Twitter and watch it go mega-viral. Instead of just honoring the singers, songwriters, directors and producers who make our favorite digital-music products, the O Music Awards will dig deeper in such categories as Innovative Music Video, Fan Army FTW, Funniest Music Short, Innovative Artist, Must Follow Artist on Twitter, NSFW Music Video, Most Viral Dance, Best Independent Music Blog, Best Animal Performance, Best Performance Series and more to dig up the people behind your favorite online music and videos, professional, amateur or just plain awesome. Voting begins today (April 5) on the O Music Awards website , and like the best viral memes, it will be simple, social and transparent, with fans encouraged to vote via social media through a mobile voting wap site. You can follow the top vote-getters in the categories on a real-time leader board in the run-up to the April 28 event. Performers and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks. And unlike those other awards shows, the night’s biggest trophy might be handed out before the broadcast, during it or even after, to keep the conversation going. “There will be an event, but it won’t be a traditional awards show with a host, audience and a bunch of celebrities,” promised Shannon Connolly, vice president of music strategy for the MTV Music Group. “It will embody what the O Awards celebrates, which is being very interactive. We’ll have live performances, mash-ups, collaborations and it will be a Web event that will take place not just on MTV Music Group sites.” Lady Gaga and Odd Future’s Tyler the Creator lead with three nominations each, followed by Kanye West, the Flaming Lips and Nicki Minaj with two nominations apiece. Additional nominated artists include Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Justin Bieber, Lil B, Wiz Khalifa, Robyn, OK Go, Katy Perry and iamwhoiam. Notable nominees include Antoine Dodson/ Gregory Brothers (Funniest Music Short), the Lonely Island (Funniest Music Short), Funny or Die (Funniest Music Short), 50 Cent, Rebecca Black and Bert (Favorite Animated GIF), the Hype Machine (Best Music Discovery Service), Pandora (Best Music Discovery Service), Tiny Desk Concerts (Best Performance Series), Gorilla vs. Bear (Best Independent Music Blog) and Marshall Jones (Best Music Hack). Fans will definitely be front and center, with an entire category devoted to the Best Fan Cover, the most rabid online fan following (which will pit 30 Seconds to Mars’ Echelon against the Beliebers, Katy Perry’s Bandaids, Gaga’s Little Monsters and the followers of My Chemical Romance, Nicki Minaj, Tokio Hotel, Wiz Khalifa, Rain and Rihanna). There are also nods to the Best Fan Forum, Best Music Hack and Best Animal Performance. The Innovative Artist race is a tight one as well, including such nominees as the Flaming Lips, iamwhoiam, Kanye, Gaga, Lil B, Radiohead and Tyler the Creator. You’ll have to choose between the Dougie, the Pony, Lil B’s Cooking Dance and the “Whip My Hair” boogie in the Most Viral Dance category. In keeping with recent digital-music innovations from MTV Networks like MTV Hive and the Music Meter , Connolly said it was apparent that the time was right to create an awards show that moved at the speed of the Net. “Music consumption has never been greater, and it’s hugely important to our audience,” she said. “We felt like the time was right to look at the convergence of technology and music fans and the YouTube celebrities who’ve created this new ecosystem where music is exploding.” Voting starts today for the O Music Awards .
