Chance The Rapper On R. Kelly’s Alleged Victims: ‘I Didn’t Value Their Stories Because They Were Black Women’

Source: Chelsea Lauren / Getty A clip featuring Chance The Rapper is making waves on the Internet as the finale of “ Surviving R. Kelly” dropped on Saturday night. In a never-aired interview for Cassius , former Interactive One VP Jamilah Lemieux sat down with the Grammy winner in May 2018 to discuss a range of topics, including his past collaboration with the Pied Piper. READ:  #SurvivingRKelly: Five Emotions You’ll Experience Watching The New Lifetime Docuseries In it, Chance, a Chicago-native, apologized for working with the “I Believe I Can Fly” singer and explained why he did it at the time. “We’re programmed to really be hypersensitive to Black male oppression. It’s just prevalent in all media, and when you see n***as getting beat up by the police, it’s men,” Chance says in the interview clip. “That’s a scene you see…slavery for a lot of people, they envision men in chains, he said. Adding, “But Black women are exponentially a higher oppressed and violated group of people just in comparison to the whole world. Maybe I didn’t care because I didn’t value the accusers’ stories because they were Black women. ” pic.twitter.com/0J46S5YOkW — Chance The Rapper (@chancetherapper) January 6, 2019 Rolling Stone had previously reported that Chance simply said, “I didn’t value the accusers’ stories because they were Black women.” However, Chance clapped back on Saturday night saying the quote was taken out context because it didn’t take into account everything he had said before that in the interview. In a note he shared on social media, the 25-year-old explained his controversial quote: “The quote was taken out of context. The truth is any of us who ever ignored the R Kelly stories, or ever believed he was being setup/attacked by the system (as Black men often are) were doing so at the detriment of Black women and girls. I apologize to all of his survivors for working with him and for taking this long to speak out.” pic.twitter.com/bqbKlsDA9l — Chance The Rapper (@chancetherapper) January 6, 2019 Anyone mentioning that I have black women in my family is deliberately missing the point. Regardless of the proximity of beneficial BW in your life, or being black yourself, we are all capable of subconsciously discrediting BW and their stories because its indoctrinated. — Chance The Rapper (@chancetherapper) January 6, 2019 Even with Chance explaining himself, many Black women still flocked to Twitter to express how his quotes made them feel. And the results were polarizing: Some condemned the rapper, while others commended him for being able to admit he was wrong. Last thing before I dip: I'm glad Chance The Rapper told the truth. I'm tired of Black Men and White folks gaslighting us. They don't believe us BECAUSE we are Black Women. He said it outright–stated a nasty truth that is killing us in every arena from childbirth to DV. — Octavia Butler knew… (@Nikyatu) January 6, 2019 What the headline should have read is: Despite Chance the Rapper having a black daughter and fiancé he discounted the victim’s stories because they were black women. He now regrets making music with a sexual predator because it is bad for his brand. https://t.co/9TMFiNqkdn — Ariel Hazzard (@ArielHazzard) January 6, 2019 A photo of Chance the Rapper with Jermaine Maxey from June 2018. Jerhonda Pace confirmed Maxey is the guy who recruited her and sought her out on behalf of Kelly. She also said Maxey engaged in sex acts with the girls and Kelly. pic.twitter.com/VbhaLtB5Hw — AshleyRay Grande (@arayyay) January 6, 2019 Chance The Rapper’s drummer is the brother of the girl R. Kelly peed on. Bye Chance. — J. Holiday’s Gucci Jacket (@eleven8) January 6, 2019 he said “i didn’t believe them because they were black women” alluding to the stereotype that nobody ever believes black women. he’s admitting that he fed into that and overlooked their stories by working w Kelly when he shouldn’t have. and now he’s owning up — tal (@whatsatalia) January 6, 2019 I could cancel chance the rapper but I wasn’t listening to his music anyway pic.twitter.com/Ee7MZZit0S — -jacquees hive (@__SoulFlower) January 6, 2019 “I didn’t value the accusers stories. Because they were BW. I made a mistake.” – Chance The Rapper admitting his misogynoir. He sounds like any dude I grew up w/ in church. Something familiar about “good church boy” w/ virulent misogynoir that becomes quotidian. #SurvivingRKelly —

Legendary Guitarist Jimi Hendrix To Have Post Office Renamed In His Honor

More here:

T he late legendary music artist Jimi Hendrix recently received a major honor from his hometown of Seattle. According to the Seattle Times , legislation was signed to name the Renton Highlands Post Office after Hendrix. Last week a bill was signed into law re-christening the Renton Highlands Post Office the James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix Post Office in the legendary guitarist’s honor. https://t.co/uviFZ5LKyb — The Seattle Times (@seattletimes) December 28, 2018 Under the bill—which was supported by Rep. Adam Smith and other senators—the post office’s new name will be the James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix Post Office, the news outlet writes. Local officials believed that he should be recognized not only for his contributions to music, but the influence and impact that he had on Seattle as well. “I am honored to join in paying tribute to rock and roll icon and Seattle native Jimi Hendrix with the renaming of the Renton Highlands Post Office as the James Marshall ‘Jimi’ Hendrix Post Office Building,” Rep. Smith told the news outlet. “This designation will further celebrate Hendrix’s deep connection to the Puget Sound region and help ensure that his creative legacy will be remembered by our community and inspire future generations.” The city has made an ongoing effort to highlight the guitarist’s legacy. In Seattle, he has a park named in his honor, a bronze statue in the city that depicts him kneeling and playing a guitar, and most recently there was an exhibit dubbed Bold As Love: Jimi Hendrix at Home that opened which delves into his early beginnings and the evolution of his musical journey at the Northwest African American Museum. Jimi Hendrix is one of the most influential guitarists in music history. “Seattle will always be Jimi’s home,” his sister Janie Hendrix once said in an interview, according to Rolling Stone . “This very area is where Jimi grew up, where his dreams were cultivated and his creative energy awakened, in many ways.” SEE ALSO: Rihanna Has A Message For Trump Playing Her Music At His ‘Tragic Rallies’ Prince’s Estate Demands Trump Stop Playing His Music At Rallies [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3842167″ overlay=”true”]

Barack Obama Lands Spot On Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs Chart

F ormer President Barack Obama has always been big on music. Throughout his presidency, he’s shared with us the songs that he keeps in heavy rotation. Let us not forget that time he made an appearance at the Apollo Theater and sang some of Al Green ’s song “Let’s Stay Together.” Obama has now taken his love for music to new heights. According to USA Today , his recent collaboration with Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda has landed him a spot on Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs chart. Barack Obama has made his debut at No. 22 on Billboard's Hot R&B Songs chart https://t.co/NrYGOWq1rR — USA TODAY Life (@usatodaylife) January 4, 2019 The song, dubbed “One Last Time (44 Remix),” debuted at No. 22 on the chart. The track features Obama, singer BeBe Winans , and Hamilton actor Christopher Jackson . On the song—which is about former President George Washington leaving his presidential seat—Obama recites Washington’s farewell address. “I anticipate with pleasing expectation that retreat in which I promise myself to realize, without alloy, the sweet enjoyment of partaking, in the midst of my fellow-citizens, the benign influence of good laws under a free government, the ever-favorite object of my heart, and the happy reward, as I trust, of our mutual cares, labors, and dangers,” says Obama. The song is a part of Miranda’s project Hamildrops which puts a spin on different songs from the musical. He launched the project last year and some of the proceeds are given to different nonprofit organizations. Obama has been a long-time supporter of the Hamilton movement. He took his family to see the show on Broadway and in 2016 the cast performed at the White House. His Billboard accomplishment comes just weeks after he shared his favorite songs of 2018 list which included music from The Carters , Leon Bridges , J. Cole , Cardi B , Janelle Monae , and others. Every week we revisit some of the pop culture trends, movies, viral moments and music from the week before and give our hot takes. We listen to the songs, watch the movies, scour the internet, and do the hard work so you don’t have to. Without further adieu, let’s jump into this week’s episode. This week DJ Franchise and Landon Levarius discuss Tekashi 6ix9ine’s latest release, Dummy Boy . The debut album was originally slated to drop on November 23, 2018 but when Tekashi was arrested on a slew of felony charges, the release was postponed. However, the album ended up leaking on Tekashi’s website anyway and in a rush to offset the damage being done by the leak, Tekashi’s team released the album on November 27, 2018, four days after its initial release date. Dummy Boy featured the tracks  “Tati” featuring DJ Spinking, “Fefe” featuring Nicki Minaj, “Bebe” featuring Anuel AA and “Stoopid” featuring Bobby Shmurda. It debuted on the US  Billboard  200 with 66,000 album-equivalent units, of which 10,000 were pure album sales. It’s still up for debate whether it was the number one album or if it was number two behind Travis Scott’s Astroworld . DJ Franchise and Landon Levarius weighed in on Tekashi 6ix9ine’s debut effort after giving it about a month to sink in. Did they think it was worth copping? For Landon, not at all. He completely hated the album. For DJ Franchise, it wasn’t too bad. Press play on the video above to see how our guys rate the new album. This week, Franchise and Landon also discuss the new Jay Ellis film “Escape Room”, which hits theaters on January 4. The movie is about six strangers who travel to a mysterious building to take part in an escape room game where they’re asked to solve a series of puzzles to win $1 million. However, things become quite dangerous when what starts out as seemingly innocent fun soon turns into a living nightmare as each room becomes an  elaborate trap that’s part of a sadistic game of life or death. Do you think Landon and Franchise were feeling the film? Press play to see what they said!

Lifetime’s ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ Series Had Black Twitter Deeply Disturbed

Read more:

Source: Prince Williams / Getty The highly anticipated Surviving R. Kelly docu-series aired Thursday night, and in true Black Twitter tradition, everyone watched together like one big happy family. The Dream Hampton produced series documented the sexual abuse allegations against the singer throughout his 30 year career. Needless to say, ish got deep. The plan was also for Kelly’s celebrity colleagues to be interviewed about what it was like to work with the singer over the years, but according to Hampton, Jay-Z , Lady Gaga and Erykah Badu declined. Dave Chappelle , Mary J. Blige , Questlove and Lil’ Kim also declined to speak. Hampton told Detroit Free Press ,  “Most people just don’t want to touch it. [Questlove] was like, ‘I would do anything for you but I can’t do this.’ It’s not because they support him, it’s because it’s so messy and muddy. It’s that turning away that has allowed this to go on.” Quest also took to Twitter the day that Surviving R. Kelly premiered, just to make it clear why he wasn’t apart of it. He tweeted (then deleted), “I always thought Kels was trash. My reason for declining the RKelly docu that I support 10000000 percent is I didn’t wanna be in the ‘good times’ portion of the doc, like stanning for his ‘genius.’ I was asked to talk about his genius. I do not nor have I EVER stanned for him.” Usually something so heavy has mixed reaction. But after watching the series, most people unanimously agree that it time we be done with R. Kelly, as a culture. But the truth of the matter is, we should have been done 25 years ago. Boondocks tried to warn y’all bout R. Kelly 15 years ago y’all just ain’t wanna listen pic.twitter.com/Rc9C2WhZqU — ZaeBlessed (@tootrill_xavier) January 4, 2019 R. KELLY TOLD Y'ALL 23 YEARS AGO HIS MIND WAS TELLING HIM NO, BUT HIS BODY WAS TELLING HIM YES…HE AINT SEE NOTHING WRONG WITH A LIL BUMP AND GRIND…HE BEEN FEELING ON BOOTIES AND PUTTING HIS KEY IN IGNITIONS SINCE DAY 1…IF THEY SEEM LIKE THEY READY, HE GOT HALF ON A BABY.. — mary-go-round (@trustmeimmary) January 4, 2019 Oddly enough though, there are still folks out there defending their Pied Piper. One person tweeted, “Alright R.Kelly is a rapist but Trapped in closet was genius.” Another Kelly stan wrote, “I love r. Kelly. He’s a music genius. That doesn’t mean I support abuse. If he hadn’t fucked up his legacy with the shit, he apparently likes to do outside of muisc ; everyone would still bump him with no hesitation. Like everyone still loves the Cosby show.” But let’s be honest guys, some of ya’ll would believe the shocking allegations if they didn’t come from young, Black women. Vanessa Butler made a great point when she tweeted,  “Bill Cosby raped white young girls and now he is in prison. R Kelly raped black young girls and he is being protected. Hmmm.” Facts, Vanessa! The rest of the six-part docuseries airs tonight on Lifetime. Hit the flip for some of the wildest reactions to Surviving R. Kelly.

The Real MVP: Questlove Clarifies Why He Declined Participating In ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ Docuseries

Source: Dimitrios Kambouris / Getty Questlove Explains His Decision To Not Be In R. Kelly Doc Questlove  is doing his part to send a clear message: He is not trying to protect R. Kelly and he never has. The Roots member is facing some mild backlash this week for declining to appear in  Surviving R. Kelly —the Lifetime docuseries centered on Kelly’s sexual abuse allegations. Executive producer and showrunner, Dream Hampton, recently told  Shadow and Act  that a number of prominent artists had turned down interviews for six-part series–which is why so many people praised John Legend for his participation. Hampton  previously elaborated saying her team reached out to celebrities who had either collaborated with the disgraced R&B star or who were critical of him. “John Legend was the only one [who participated],” she told  Shadow and Act . “I asked Jay-Z, I asked Mary J. Blige, I asked Lil Kim, Erykah Badu, Dave Chappelle […] I mean, most people just don’t want to touch it. I remember Ahmir [“Questlove” Thompson] was like, ‘I would do anything for you but I can’t do this.’ It’s not because they support him, it’s because it’s so messy and muddy. It’s that turning away that has allowed this to go on.” Fans were quick to jump on social media,  immediately expressing their disappointment in celebrities and their noncooperation–of course including Questlove. While it’s safe to assume that some of these musicians or former collaborators declined to be in the doc because they support Kelly, Quest insists that is not the case. “I always thought Kels was trash. My reason for declining the RKelly docu that I support 10000000 percent is I didn’t wanna be in the ‘good times’ portion of the doc, like stanning for his ‘genius,’” Questlove wrote in a now-deleted Twitter. “I was asked to talk about his genius. I do not nor have I EVER stanned for him” He continued on to say, “Just wanna make that abundantly clear in a non ‘he doth protest too much’ way. That quote makes it look like I’m protecting him. I’m thinking ‘damn I don’t wanna be the one guy I always am in documentaries fawning over someone I detest.’ So make ZERO mistake on my positioning.” Questlove deleted his tweets shortly after Hampton responded, where she insists she didn’t ask the Roots percussionist to talk about R. Kelly’s musical prowess. She quoted Quest’s tweet responding, “I didn’t ask you about his “Genius.” I’ve never thought he was a genius. I asked you to come on camera and say the same thing you said on Twitter. I told you I need Blake male allies.” Though the stories here don’t seem to add up completely, it seems like Questlove was taking his precautions since he usually takes the role of “talking about (insert name here’s) musical genius” and didn’t want to come off the same way in this instance.
