J.I.D’s introductory Dreamville release, The Never Story , captivated many an ear in 2017 and 2018 looks to be another year of grabbing listeners by the earlobe and holding them hostage to the arresting frequency of his music. J.I.D’s first two releases from DiCaprio 2, “151 Rum” and “Off Deez” featuring the aforementioned J. Cole are “attention-grabbers”, but as he explains to BOSSIP, there is much more in store. Jah : On The Never Story ‘s “Somebody” you rapped that your sound was “nothin’ particular”, however, the first two singles from DiCaprio 2 seem to have a very intentional sound. Is that what we can expect from DiCaprio 2? J.I.D : Those two songs are just attention-grabbers. I kinda did the same thing with The Never Story . I dropped the song “Never” and I dropped the song “Underwear” which came out about a week before and I dropped a song called “Bruh” with the same energy, but there’s super variations on [this] project, there’s nothing that sounds like those two songs. They’re back to back on the project, they have a section off where they belong. The project is sectioned off. There’s not one complete sound. It’s called DiCaprio 2 because it’s like a movie so each song is an individual film. Jah : Talk about your development as an artist. We know you and Earthgang (another Atlanta-based group signed to Dreamville) lived together and you weren’t always making music. J.I.D: : We were putting in hours every day. It was a competition between each other. And then we was trying to pay rent so n****s was working at Chipotle, Domino’s, cleaning up rat traps, whatever to get some money so we could pay at the end of the month to have lights and record. That’s where the development came from, just doing odd shows in Atlanta, just keeping our blinders on just like a horse in downtown New York. Jah : Speaking of competitive, Cole names you as the closest MC to his skill set on “Off Deez”. Did you know you were going to put him on the song when you first made it? If so, did you write your verse competitively to make sure you outdid him? J.I.D : I record everything by myself at the crib. I record in a secluded environment with just one other person, my composer. So I did it and I sent it to him. No, I didn’t send it to him first. I sent it to–I sent it to Kendrick [Lamar] first (laughs). Facts! That’s 100% what happened. I sent it Kendrick first. Long shot, Kendrick was going on the Championship Tour so it was just a long shot. I knew it wasn’t gonna happen and it’s understandable because he’s a superstar and has obligations. I sent it through the proper channels it just didn’t work out, but he f***ed with it. I made it the around the time of the XXL freestyle back in maybe April. I played if for Ski Mask The Slump God but he got busy and I know the situation with X (the shooting death of XXXTentacion) affected him a lot. Then I sent it to Cole like, “You f**k with this record? It’s hard, right? I’m bout to kill it and do the second verse” and he’s like “Hey, save me a lil’ piece on there” and like, “What? You wanna get on this one?” And we got s**t, but he was just moved when he heard it. You have to do…’, but my sisters and my mom are definitely tougher than me and all my brothers.” You can tell by the manner in which he speaks about the women in his life that J.I.D has been a very grounded and empathetic person long before he became a rap star. “S**t that they been through, s**t that I’ve seen them do, they all had babies and they all figured out life. Women have a different power that’s hard to tap into as a man because we got it lil’ bit easier. The whole giving birth aspect, the whole God creating life aspect goes hand-in-hand to me. I’m not just talking about catchy theme songs or closing credit music. I’m talking about the countless songs that characters sang within their T.V. world that weren’t real, but they were ridiculously catchy. It could’ve been a song from a music group within the show or a parody that ended up making you jam just as hard as real-life songs. Photo by Tim Mosenfelder/Getty Images Chief Keef Is Catching A Huge Break After Felony DUI Charge Chief Keef is a lucky man, and he’s proving exactly that by dodging another jail bid. On Tuesday, TMZ reported that the Chicago rapper caught a serious break after his felony DUI charge, which he got when police pulled him over in his green Lamborghini driving through Miami. The DUI charge has been knocked down to a reckless driving charge after Keef pleaded no contest in the year-long legal battle. Keef has now been sentenced to six months of probation, and he’s also been ordered to submit at least 50 hours of community service–which is obviously a huge improvement from being behind bars. Even though Sosa got lucky in the case of avoiding a DUI charge, his legal trouble doesn’t quite stop there. Just last month, a Second Circuit Court judge in South Dakota denied a motion to dismiss a drug charge the rapper is still facing after his June 2017 arrest. In that particular instance, Keef was charged with marijuana possession of between two ounces and a half-pound along with possession of drug paraphernalia after Sioux Falls security reportedly found drugs in his carry-on bag. For his Sioux Falls case, Chief Keef’s legal team argued that the THC-infused edibles he was carrying are not considered marijuana under South Dakota law, because they contained no plant material. Unfortunately for Keef, though, the judge didn’t quite buy the excuse. Keef is absolutely no stranger to legal troubles, and the latest chapter of his never-ending legal saga comes just a couple of weeks after the release of the rapper’s Back From The Dead 3 mixtape. Hopefully for his fans, Keef will be able to stay clear of any trouble while touring and performing all of his new music around the world.

What attracted you to joining RHOA? I wanted people to hear my story. I just wanted to make sure it truly represented my family and who we are as parents, artists and “marriage ambassadors.” What does it mean to be a “marriage ambassador”? Me and my husband have been together 17 years, we’ve been married for 12 years. We’ve been through so many challenges and we were able to overcome those challenges. We are marriage ambassadors and it’s our mission to help other couples work through their challenges so they can have lifelong healthy relationships. We get couples together and encourage and inspire one another and we help people that are going through challenges and we encourage them to work it out. It’s all about saving families and bettering our community. Families make up our community so as long as the families stay together, our community is a better place. As a marriage ambassador, what advice would you give to the other RHOA couples? No matter what you’re going through, you have to stick it out, you have to communicate, you have to listen to each other. There is a blessing even in the impossible because anything is possible when you trust and you have faith and that’s very important in relationships. What was your husband’s initial reaction when you told him that you wanted to join the RHOA cast? He’s very protective so at first, he was like, ‘Oh hell nah!!!!’ Then the more that we talked about it, we realized that this is a great platform for us to share our testimony. How do you balance being a wife and mother with RHOA? I am a superwoman! I have a great support system, it consists of my husband, my family, and my friends. Even though I ‘m a superwoman every superwoman needs help. We understand that you’ve known Kandi for a number of years, what other housewives are you close with? I think all the housewives are great and we’re getting to know each other more. I’m still closest with Kandi, I just have such a great history with her. She’s worked with my group and we come from the same musical background from the 90s and [from] her doing the “808 Remix” for Blaque. I feel really close to her. I’m getting to know everybody, everybody is really, really, cool. Is there a housewife, in particular, you’ve enjoyed getting to know? I really like NeNe, she keeps me laughing—she’s so funny! And [I like] Eva because we have the same connection, we’re both new mothers, we have that in common. Are you working on any new music? Yes, I have some new music that I’m working on with Blaque. We have a surprise coming up so stay tuned. Also, my husband and I have a singing group called ‘Me and Mari’, we’ve been working on new music for a few years now.
