Appropriate action will be taken in accordance with City Schools’ Code of Conduct and the law. “ The statement continued, “We are committed to the safety and security of our students and staff and work hard every day to create positive and supportive environments for teaching and learning. To the extent possible, students in the video have been identified. Appropriate action will be taken in accordance with City Schools’ Code of Conduct and the law.” See the video below, but please be warned that it is graphic. Another disturbing video has surfaced showing a 14-year-old Baltimore high school student being viciously beaten in the boys' bathroom by a gang of thugs. It was confirmed that the attack took place at Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy. 443-642-2110 pic.twitter.com/BMFzx1qntV — Big Boss (@escapedmatrix) October 11, 2019 According to the National Center for Educational Statistics from 2016, Black children have the highest rate of being bullied, “25% of African-American students, 22% of Caucasian students, 17% of Hispanic students, and 9% of Asian students report being bullied at school.” Sadly, bullying often results in suicide, “Bully victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, according to studies by Yale University,” the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention reported . On top of that, the CDC found that more than “14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it.” A most recent example is Phillip Spruill Jr. , an 11-year-old 5th grader from Philadelphia, killed himself in April after incessant bullying at school because of his weight. In addition, Kevin Reese Jr. , a 10-year-old from Houston, hanged himself to death in January because he was bullied at school through taunting and physical abuse, the New York Daily News reported at the time. An overwhelming amount of kids who are bullied don’t report it, according to many educators. Most bullied children are at a higher risk of anxiety, depression and other negative outcomes. We hope the bullies in the video are properly punished and our thought go out to the 14-year-old. Source: Johnny Nunez / Getty Kanye West has been taking his Sunday Service performance experience on the road in various cities as of late, no doubt to prepare listeners for the highly-anticipated Jesus Is King album. This morning (October 12) as Howard University’s homecoming weekend kicks off, the Chicago superstar brought Sunday Service to the Yard much to the delight of many. Footage thus far is still coming in via Twitter but from what we can gather, West and his large entourage of performers made their way to the campus grounds of the famed HBCU to deliver music and upliftment as has been the case with previous pop-up performances. Early reports from Twitter revealed that the visit was largely brief as HuffPost editor Phillip Lewis gave his brief account of the moment. Kanye really said “I was canceled, but as I stand on the lawn of Howard University, do I look canceled to you?” — philip lewis (@Phil_Lewis_) October 12, 2019 According to a reporter from local news outlet WUSA, students at Howard were alerted of West’s performance early this morning via email. It isn’t known if West took him up on the offer. If @kanyewest is indeed at #HowardU this morning, send him to the third floor of Founder's Library after he's done. I have some books for him. #TheMiseducationOfTheNegro — Greg Carr (@AfricanaCarr) October 12, 2019 And while critique on Twitter of West’s Sunday Service has indeed been high this morning, there are some who found a reason to praise the move. kanye west sunday service @HowardU this morning may just have been one of the coolest things ive ever seen in my life pic.twitter.com/D6KSCanXd3 — Grace Willoughby (@gracewillo) October 12, 2019 — Photo: Getty

B lack artists often find themselves fighting for a seat at the table when it comes to having their work featured in exhibitions at renowned art institutions. According to a study conducted by Art News , less than three percent of museum acquisitions over the past ten years have been pieces created by African American artists. Despite the exclusion from mainstream galleries and museums, they are forging paths of their own, carving out spaces where they can share their artistry with the world, and using their work as a means for social and political activism. Bronx-bred visual artist and actor Tyson Hall is one of the individuals a part of a modern-day renaissance of Black artists who are reclaiming their space in the art industry and utilizing their work to uplift and empower their communities. Hall says his passion for activism runs deep. He was born in Washington Heights, New York across the street from the Audubon Ballroom where civil rights leader Malcolm X was murdered. The activist’s impact would later influence pieces of Hall’s work that echoed his messages of Black unity and the power of Black economics; pieces that were created decades after Malcolm X’s untimely death but are still relevant with today’s social and political climate. Hall—who came of age in the Bronx during the birth of hip-hop—has also pulled inspiration from the music genre throughout his career. His first art form was graffiti and then he decided to transition his canvases from MTA trains to sketchbooks. Hall was inspired by the political messages behind the music from groups like Public Enemy and how music mogul Sean Combs remixed soulful tracks from legends like James Brown to introduce that era of music to a new generation. He says incorporating the teachings of Black leaders from the past in his artwork to uplift and inspire the next generation of creatives is something that he strives to do through his work. It was the 1996 film Basquiat that drew him closer to the idea of using art as a form of activism. “Throughout my career, I’ve taken a lot of what our ancestors have said and done and remixed those voices through visual artistic expression,” Hall told NewsOne. “I did a series titled Buy Black where one piece, in particular, had four panels that read “Buy Black” and as you go down each panel it starts to disseminate. It was representative of the short life span of a dollar within the Black community and how we should do more to support each other.” Despite the powerful messages displayed through his art, Hall says one of the most challenging parts of being a Black artist is getting his work placed in galleries and museums. Instead of waiting for these art institutions to give him an opportunity, Hall has developed his own and has created spaces for his work. His pieces are on the walls at Harlem restaurants including Angel of Harlem and Corner Social and he has donated his work for auction to charities that include The Jackie Robinson Foundation, Abyssinian Baptist Church, the MOCADA Museum, and the ARRC. Going beyond the canvas, Hall uses acting as a form of artistry. His acting credits include Paid in Full , American Gangster , and Godfather of Harlem . He does motivational speaking as an avenue to empower inner-city children to use art as a means for change. He’s also developing a platform called SOL (Solidifying Our Legacy) Media Plus which is dedicated to educating, empowering, and connecting the creative community. As far as his advice for emerging Black artists, he says to “lock in and identify with your purpose as an artist to push forward.” SEE ALSO: Issa Rae Invests In Black Woman-Led Tech Startup Diddy Donates $1M To Fund New Bronx Charter School [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3888948″ overlay=”true”]
Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty In a recent interview with People Magazine , Oprah Winfrey opened up about not being a mother and her longtime partnership with Stedman Graham . The billionaire met Mr. Graham in 1986, and Oprah considered being a mother during a short window of time when they were engaged. “At one point in Chicago I had bought an additional apartment because I was thinking, ‘Well, if we get married, I’m going to need room for children,’” said. But the appeal of having kids started to fade into the background, as the 65-year-old reflected on the “the depth of responsibility and sacrifice that is actually required to be a mother.” Having guests on her iconic “Oprah Winfrey Show,” who didn’t do the best job at parenting, made Oprah take a mirror to herself and her own boundaries. It is why, throughout my years, I have had the highest regard for women who choose to be at home [with] their kids, because I don’t know how you do that all day long. Nobody gives women the credit they deserve.” Oprah didn’t want to make sacrifices as a mama, or a wife either. “I used to think about this all the time, that I was working these 17-hour days, and so were my producers, and then I go home and I have my two dogs and I have Stedman, who’s letting me be who I need to be in the world. He’s never demanding anything from me like, ‘Where’s my breakfast? Where’s my dinner?’ Never any of that, which I believed would have changed had we married.” SEE ALSO: Oprah Winfrey Reveals She Was Pre-Diabetic Before Joining Weight Watchers Looking back, both partners agree that marriage would’ve been the deathknelll of their union. “Both he and I now say, ‘If we had married, we would not be together,’” she adds. “No question about it — we would not stay married, because of what that would have meant to him, and I would have had my own ideas about it.” Winfrey may not have any biological children, but she is “mama” to the many girls in her Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy. Because of her connection with girls worldwide, Oprah has no qualms about her decision. “I have not had one regret about that. I also believe that part of the reason why I don’t have regrets is because I got to fulfill it in the way that was best for me: the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa,” she said. “Those girls fill that maternal fold that I perhaps would have had. In fact, they overfill — I’m overflowed with maternal.” [ione_media_gallery src=”https://rickeysmileymorningshow.com” id=”1856086″ overlay=”true”] This story was originally published on MadameNoire.com . Comedian Sherri Shepherd is pretty frustrated with her baby daddy. The 52-year-old found a humorous way to show her level of “fed up” although we aren’t quite sure which baby daddy the vitriol is aimed at. Shepherd was married to Jeff Tarpley for nine years and they share a child together. They split in 2010. “The View” alum was quickly remarried in 2011 to Lamar Sally. The two had planned to have a child via surrogate, but when they decided to divorce in 2015, a court ruled that Shepherd was the legal parent of the child. Both of these situations would give any woman a case of the upsets, so Shepherd jokingly ran around a trailer screaming: “My mood after dealing w my son’s father #singlemomdrama #babydaddyissues #jesustakethewheel.” View this post on Instagram My Walking Dead audition or my date just ghosted me… you caption this!
