Morgan Spurlock on His New Doc Mansome — and the Star Who Could Stand to Tweeze

Gone are the days of callouses and carpenter pants. Today, men are rocking skinny jeans and moccasins as they treat themselves to spa days, having no shame in getting waxed, tweezed, manicured and/or exposed to other meticulous grooming techniques. This ongoing — and slightly horrifying — “manscaping” trend is spreading throughout America and beyond, and Morgan Spurlock (along with executive producers Ben Silverman, Will Arnett and Jason Bateman) captured it all in their world premiere Tribeca documentary, Mansome . The film highlights everything from elite beardsmen (yes, it’s a sport) to wrestlers’ full-body shaving, but mostly focuses on candid interviews with some familiar Hollywood men. Movieline caught up with director Spurlock at the film’s premiere over the weekend, chatting about everything from the ongoing “manocolypse” to the Oscar-nominee’s top five manscaping tips. When you think of the manscaping trend, who comes to mind in Hollywood? Zach Galifianakis! That’s why we called him first. How much grooming does he do? None — that’s why he was perfect. You think of someone like a David Beckham, you know; you think of somebody like that. We immediately thought of Scott Ian from Anthrax because he’s been shaving around that crazy beard his whole life, and he’s one of the first people I called. You think of like these kind of perfect-looking actors and actresses, many of which wouldn’t talk to us, simply because they didn’t want to get into it. In reference to some of those guys, do you think that kind of seal look is good for anyone? Well, it seems to be good for Seal, I don’t know — it seems to work out! I feel like if you’re going to commit yourself, like really going for it, then you might as well go for it. I’m not quite that guy. I wasn’t even talking about Seal the musician — I was talking about a seal, like the body slickness of a fully-waxed man… Oh, like when they seal it all in? No, that’s not for me. What was the most exciting part about working with this group of men? Had you ever worked with them before? I had never worked with Will or Jason; I’d never worked with any of the guys in the film. I had met a lot of them and had said that I’d love to work with them sometime. When we called Zach for the film, he jumped at the chance. He said “Absolutely — come meet me at my place in North Carolina!” And he was great. I’ve been such a fan of Judd Apatow for so long, and Paul Rudd, so to have those guys to come in was great. And the characters that we follow in the film — Jack Passion, Shawn Daivari, Ricky [Manchanda] — to have these guys open their lives to us, to let us kind of follow them through these like manscaping rituals, you gotta be a brave guy; you gotta be really courageous to kind of open yourself up like that. I think we had really cool, courageous guys who realized that we were going to make a fun, funny film. Why do you think now was the right time to make this movie? You know, we’re in the midst of a manocolypse! We gotta help figure out what we need to do to help define masculinity today! What do you think are the top five things in the manscaping world? Well, there’s a lot of waxing; a lot of hairy guys waxing is a big one. Grooming is also a big one — making sure you shave your face or cut your hair. There’s a lot of guys with big caterpillar eyebrows… Peter Gallagher? Peter Gallagher may want to take a little something to the middle of that; it’s okay to do that these days. You don’t want to have the unibrow — not so en vogue anymore. I think you don’t want to have a bunch of grimey fingernails; I don’t ever want to see a guy with big, dirty fingernails. Unless you’re like a coal miner or you’re digging a ditch somewhere and that’s your job — like “I dig ditches” or “I dig mud all day! That’s what I do.” — you can’t just go around all day with scrub in there. Do you think women are more attracted to men that manscape? I think that what attracts you initially is how you look. I think ultimately you are attracted to someone at first because of “X,” no matter what it is; there’s something about those pheromones that they’re sending out, and you want them, for whatever reason that is. And then you start to understand who they are and what they’re about, and you continue to stay attracted to them once you peel back the layers. But I do think that we are a judgmental society, and you want to be attracted to them first. But then once you start to talk to them, then you realize, “Wow, you are a completely terrible, shallow person. I don’t want to be around you anymore.” And then you realize that what really matters is all the stuff that’s in here. [Points to head] All the pretty people that I’ve gone out with aren’t the pretty people that I’ve stayed with; I’ve usually stayed with people that have much more to offer from the inside. Is that the advice that you’re going to give to your son? I’m going to tell my son, “Marry the most ugly woman that you can — she’s going to be the best to you of all time.” Read all of Movieline’s Tribeca 2012 coverage here . Courtney Love Says Dave Grohl Hit on Frances Bean Cobain; Rocker Angrily Denies "Hateful" Claim

Courtney Love fired off a Twitter missive in which she accuses former Nirvana member Dave Grohl of hitting on her daughter, Frances Bean Cobain. Grohl angrily denied the allegation. “Unfortunately Courtney is on another hateful Twitter rant,” he said via his publicist. “These new accusations are upsetting, offensive and absolutely untrue.” What the Foo Fighters frontman is referring to is a series of tweets the 47-year-old Love, the late Kurt Cobain’s widow, lobbed last night online. SIDE NOTE: Hilariously, her allegations against @davegrohl actually went to a German IT student by that name … it’s not the rocker’s account. Anyway, Love Tweeted the following: “I hear from frannies roommate that @davegrohl hit on frances, and that she was curious, I’m not mad at her, him I am about to shoot, dead.” Courtney admitted the whole thing may have been gossip she heard from a driver, but still laid into the musician because she totally believes it: “The driver from the cm who drove @davegrohl my daughter was telling me what st. on laurel canyon and that he had his hands all over her.” “it could be a riumnour [sic] the actual sex, and it’s not beans fault she’s not slutty in any way, at all, HES OBSESSED.” she added. Courtney went on to suggest that Grohl was “sexually obsessed with” Kurt as well and that he “had that Romney rape thing about him.” Don’t ask us what the hell that even means. For what it’s worth, Love is a certified crazy person. Frances Bean Cobain herself believes as much, as evidenced by their volatile history. [Photos: WENN.com]

Hugh Hefner Biopic That Will Never Get Made Lands at Warner Bros.

You’ve been hearing about it for years , and at last, the fabled Hugh Hefner biopic that will never get made has moved from Universal to Warner Bros. The one and only Jerry Weintraub will produce, at least until he won’t. “While Universal had filmmakers like Brett Ratner attached at one time or another and actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Hugh Jackman mentioned as possibles to play Hef, the project languished,” Mike Fleming writes at ML’s sister site Deadline. “Wentraub would not disclose what part of Hefner’s life he will cover, and he denied that Harry Potter scribe Steve Kloves is being talked to as a potential screenwriter.” Finally! We’re getting somewhere. [ Deadline ]

Amber Tamblyn is 86% Sorry For Pulling the Best E-mail Prank Ever on Tyrese

Amber Tamblyn ( Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants , The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret ) always seemed like a girl with moxie, and I’d guess you don’t fall in with a guy like David Cross without one wicked sense of humor, but even so the depths of awesome that she went to in pranking Tyrese Gibson deserve applause. And boy, what a prank: After receiving an e-mail from the Transformers / Fast 5 star proposing a future collaboration after he mistook her for model Amber Rose on a mutual friend’s email message, Tamblyn had some fun with the musician-actor with a series of original “Awareness Raps.” An excerpt of the exchange, as detailed at the blog Street Boners and TV Carnage : On Feb 26, 2012, at 10:16 AM, Amber Rose T wrote: lol u are so sweet boo I’ve been trying to get this album goin for so long u know how it is. Eventually Tyrese caught on to the sham and cut off the exchange; Tamblyn gave the following update on her official blog in a post entitled The Tyrese Sessions : I emailed Tyrese one last time yesterday (as myself of course) after he wrote me saying “you took this shit public?! Not cool… not even remotely…” I reiterated that yes I took advantage of a man that took adntage of another man’s cc list… but it’s all good- we should do a song together and laugh at the whole thing. He said my music was “corny as fuck” and no. Now I am 86% sorry, Tyrese. Raise your Maker’s Mark in the air for Amber (Rose) Tamblyn, everyone. Dave Haywood and Kelli Cashiola: Engaged!

Lady Antebellum’s Dave Haywood and Kelli Cashiola are engaged! Haywood, 29, made her favorite holiday one she’ll never forget . After picking Cashiola, the VP of Marketing/Brand Management for Warner Music Nashville, up from her Music Row office, the musician asked her to slip on a blindfold as they turned onto her street … Once inside her home, Kelli Cashiola was delighted to discover that while she was at work, Haywood had transformed every room into a winter wonderland. But it was outside that the reason for the blindfold was revealed – a string of Christmas lights spelled out “Will you marry me?” on the front of the house. She said yes, too. A date has not been set for the nuptials, though it’s presumed it will be after bandmate Hillary Scott’s anticipated spring wedding to fianc

‘Hunger Games’: Top 10 Moments Of 2011

In this week’s Hobnobbing, we reflect on the movie’s milestones from the past year. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Murray Close If any film caught Internet fire this year, it was most certainly the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ young-adult novel ” The Hunger Games .” Though the film had been optioned by Lionsgate way back in 2009, 2011 was the year fans finally saw all the pieces come together, from casting the titular tournament’s 24 tributes to a teaser tidbit and full-length trailer. As such, MTV News is taking a look back at all things “Hunger Games” with a list of the franchise’s best moments from 2011 (in chronological order). Let the Games begin! X Marks the Release Date The year began with a bang when Lionsgate announced in late January that “The Hunger Games” would swoop into theaters March 23, 2012 . Lionsgate set that particular date in its crosshairs hoping to capitalize on spring breaks and Easter weekend for the (mostly) family-friendly release. Jennifer Lawrence Is Katniss Everdeen The Reaping then began in earnest, with seemingly every young Hollywood actress vying for the coveted role of District 12’s female tribute. Would it be Hailee Steinfeld? Kaya Scodelario? Abigail Breslin? In the end, MTV News had the pleasure of revealing that then-20-year-old Jennifer Lawrence, who nabbed an Oscar nomination for her work in 2010’s “Winter’s Bone,” would enter the arena as the much-loved heroine. But Who Will Play Peeta and Gale? Similar speculation followed the casting of Katniss’ two love interests — fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark and hunting buddy Gale Hawthorne. Nine young actors were reportedly in contention for one of the two roles, including “Weeds” star Hunter Parrish and “Wizards of Waverly Place” actor David Henrie, but, ultimately, Josh Hutcherson landed the role of Peeta while Liam Hemsworth won Gale. First Look at Lawrence as Katniss Salivating fans didn’t have to wait too long for their first taste of Lawrence as Katniss, as she posed for the cover of Entertainment Weekly, flaunting the tribute’s soon-to-be-iconic uniform . The styled snap quieted many critics who’d said the actress was too blond, too tall, too pretty or too whatever for the role. Cinna Will Rock There were no shortage of casting announcements in spring 2011, but none seemed to catch watchful fans off guard more than that of Lenny Kravitz landing the role of Katniss’ stylist Cinna. But, really, it made a lot of sense, considering the musician’s fondness for fashion. “I like clothes, and I like playing with clothes. Every now and again, you go south. It’s all good. I enjoy fashion as an art,” he told MTV News . The Mockingjay Catches Fire In a nifty bit of promotion, Lionsgate released the first “Hunger Games” poster in July, and it was literally on fire. Well, sorta. The one-sheet depicted Katniss’ infamous talisman — a mockingjay pin — wreathed in glowing flames. The eye-catching motion poster definitely gave fans something to chew on while they waited for more first looks. We Spy Two “Hunger Games” Hotties Following in co-star Lawrence’s footsteps, the men of “The Hunger Games” landed their own EW cover story , in which Hutcherson took the opportunity to quiet a few nagging concerns about his stature.”Jennifer’s not 2 feet taller than me!” he told the magazine. “If anything, maybe she’s a half-inch taller.” November 2013 Is “Catching Fire” We hadn’t even seen a frame of the first film yet, yet Lionsgate announced a November 22, 2013, release date for the follow-up, “Catching Fire.” With “The Twilight Saga” taking its final winter bow in 2012, it looks like “The Hunger Games” is poised to be the new holiday tentpole. A Tasty Tease All those cover images and promotional stills went only so far to sate fans’ appetites. A cinematic preview was in order, and we at MTV were happy to deliver. During the closing moments of this year’s Video Music Awards, viewers were treated to a 30-second sneak peek , following Katniss as she sprinted through the arena’s blazing forest, with Gale’s words of encouragement resounding in her ears. Sure, the bite was short, but it was still satisfying. First Full-Length Trailer Nearly three lean months followed before the first full-length trailer made its entrance into the arena. And boy, was it worth the wait. From the tearful reaping to the Games’ taut opening moments, the clip was one of our top teases of the year , offering a promise of the big-screen awesomeness to follow.
