Katy Perry Picks ‘The One That Got Away’ As Next Single

Song will be the sixth single from 2010’s Teenage Dream. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ Getty Images Katy Perry isn’t ready to let the Teenage Dream era go. She’s readying her sixth single from the album, the sentimental midtempo track “The One That Got Away.” Billboard reports that the singer’s label has confirmed the track’s release. Of the decision to release another song from the album, Greg Thompson, an EMI Music/Capitol Records EVP/marketing and promotion rep, told the mag, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” Boasting production and writing credits from Dr. Luke and Max Martin (with a co-writing assist from Perry herself), the track is all about her first love. On the track’s chorus, she pines, “In another life, I would be your girl/ We keep all our promises, be us against the world/ And in another life, I would make you stay/ So I don’t have to say you were the one that got away.” While she’s a pop princess, Perry also calls out her love for artists like Radiohead and Johnny Cash on the song, which appears to be about another musician. “Someone said you had your tattoo removed,” she sings. “Saw you downtown singing the blues/ It’s time to face the music/ I’m no longer your muse.” The track will hit radio next month. So far, Perry’s already found plenty of success with her previous five Teenage Dream singles, with every one topping the chart. The California Gurl matched Michael Jackson’s record with the feat, and if this track should also go to #1, she would best the King of Pop. The label added that Luke may “touch up” the track for the radio and that Perry is “reading treatments” for a video. “If it goes to #1, that would be great,” Thompson told Billboard. “If not, we still have a Katy song on the radio in fourth quarter.” What is your favorite Teenage Dream single? Clarence Clemons’ Condition ‘Encouraging,’ Bruce Springsteen Says

The Boss says his E Street Band saxophonist ‘will need much care and support to achieve his potential once again.’ By Jocelyn Vena Clarence Clemons Photo: Getty Images After suffering a stroke on Sunday, Clarence Clemons is making a recovery. The sax player’s longtime friend, Bruce Springsteen shared news of the E Street Band member’s condition on Monday (June13). In a statement to MTV News, the Boss said, “By now, many of you have heard that our beloved comrade and sax player Clarence Clemons has suffered a serious stroke. While all initial signs are encouraging, Clarence will need much care and support to achieve his potential once again. He has his wonderfully supportive wife, Victoria, excellent doctors and health care professionals, and is surrounded by friends and family.” Springsteen, who has been working with Clemons for nearly four decades, went on to thank his fans for all of their well-wishes. “I thank you all for your prayers and positive energy and concern,” he said. “This is a time for us all to share in a hopeful spirit that can ultimately inspire Clarence to greater heights.” Lady Gaga, who featured Clemons on her Born This Way track “Edge of Glory,” asked her Little Monsters to send the musician some love via video messages on Monday. And Gaga took to Twitter again to share her feelings about the saxophonist. “In bed with Mommy thinking about Clarence, I can’t wait for you to see the beautiful video we made together,” she wrote. “He’s a really special person.” (At press time, there were still no details about when the video will be released.) A rep for Springsteen noted that a special email address has been created for fans to send get-well wishes Clemons’ way. They can send messages to notestoclarence@clarenceclemons.com. The rep added, “It is for notes only and not an information site and no one will be able to respond right now.” Send your well-wishes to Clarence Clemons in the comments below. Lady Gaga Sends Love To Clarence Clemons On Twitter

‘Can we all make some get-well videos?’ Gaga requests of her Little Monsters. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ WireImage Clarence Clemons is reportedly “responsive and in stable condition” after two brain surgeries, according to Bruce Springsteen fansite Backstreets.com . The E Street Band member suffered a stroke on Sunday and is now reportedly on the mend. “Yesterday, it did not look good at all. Today … miracles are happening. His vital signs are improving. He’s responsive. His eyes are welling up when we’re talking to him. He was paralyzed on his left side, but now he’s squeezing with his left hand,” a source close to the musician tells the site. “This is the best news we’ve heard since [the stroke] happened — it’s nothing short of miraculous. The next five days will still be critical. But he’s a fighter.” Fox New York confirmed the report. A rep for Springsteen had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment or further information on Clemons’ condition by press time. Lady Gaga, who worked with Clemons on her Born This Way album, took to Twitter to send love and well-wishes to the saxophonist. “Little monsters, my very close friend +musician on ‘The Edge of Glory’ Clarence Clemons is very sick,” she wrote. “Can we all make some get-well videos?” “Edge of Glory” producer Fernando Garibay recently recalled to MTV News Gaga’s desire to get the musician on the song, which she wrote as an ode to her grandfather. “As soon as she was done with it, we said, ‘Let’s go with it.’ I think it’s very epic. It’s an emotional song,” Garibay said. As for Clemons’ appearance on the song, he added, “She wanted a sax part, so he came in and played on ‘Edge of Glory,’ and what a moment that was to have her family there when the sax was being played on the track and it was all really magical. “Clarence Clemons came to the city; we were in New York,” he continued. “He heard the song twice. We set up a mic and everything [and he] just played live all the way through. It was kind of one take. It was really amazing.” Related Videos Track By Track: Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Related Artists Lady Gaga

Kid Cudi Talks Growth, New Single And Quitting Drugs

‘I like myself better off drugs … it’s about becoming mature,’ Cudi tells MTV News about recording after giving up marijuana. By Rob Markman Kid Cudi Photo: MTV News Kid Cudi doesn’t care what you think about his music — he likes it and that’s that! Last week, Cudders dropped his new Dot Da Genius-produced single, “Perfect Is the Word,” and it was quite different from what some fans were used to getting from the Cleveland representative. “I’m very proud of it; it’s something that a year ago I wouldn’t have ever imagined that I’d be able to do. It’s different, I get that,” Cudi told MTV News while on the set of his HBO show, “How to Make It in America.” “Some people are going to get it, some people aren’t. That’s cool. I just don’t really give a f— who does and who doesn’t. I mean, I care about the people that do, because that means, alright cool, there some people who have an open mind, who are smart and who get art.” The “Day N Nite” star has been transcending the lines of rap music with each new release, and on his latest song, Cudi goes for a distinctively dark rock feel. He is especially proud of the fact that he was able to play the guitar on the track and deliver something worth recording. “It’s just some people who are very one-track minded. The world that I am coming from, hip-hop, is so regurgitated and repetitive that some people are used to that and they don’t want change, they don’t like change,” Cudi maintained. “And I get that, that’s cool. Luckily for me, I’m confident in myself as an artist where I can do what I want, and as long as I’m cool with it, I’m cool with it.” “Perfect Is the Word” is the first track from Cudi and Dot Da Genius’ upcoming Wizard album , and while the song is different, it isn’t the only change that the musician has exhibited this year. In February, the G.O.O.D. Music artist took to Twitter to announce that he was leaving the Dream On label, which he launched back in 2009 with partners Patrick “Plain Pat” Reynolds and producer Emile Haynie. He also assured fans that he was still with Kayne West’s G.O.O.D. Music. That wasn’t all, though: In April, Cudi revealed that he’d quit smoking marijuana on his Tumblr page. The rapper, who used to call himself the Lonely Stoner, now is experiencing a bit of backlash, but he remains undeterred and is pleased with his new material. “There were a lot of write-ups where people were just sh–ting on it and there were a lot of people who were like, ‘We liked you better when you were on drugs,’ ” he said with disappointment. “It’s kinda like, ‘Man, OK, well you weren’t a fan to begin with so f— you,’ and I like myself better off drugs. So it’s about me and it’s about evolving and it’s about change. It’s about becoming a man; it’s about becoming mature.” Ultimately, Kid Cudi just wants room to grow. “Ten years from now I’m going look at my discography and I’m gonna be proud of it,” he said. “I don’t want to be 10 years from now looking at my discography, like, ‘Man, I was a f—ing knucklehead when I made that.’ ” What do you think of Kid Cudi’s post-marijuana work so far? Lady Gaga’s ‘Edge Of Glory’ Is A ‘Bold Move,’ Co-Producer Says

‘This record is all heart,’ Fernando Garibay tells MTV News about the sax-driven record. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images Lady Gaga ‘s “Edge of Glory” is an undeniably pure pop track. The Born This Way single dropped earlier this week, and the song’s co-producer, Fernando Garibay, says he’s still “very surprised,” “floored,” even, by the song’s release. “You know what’s crazy, as we were making the record … ‘Born This Way’ is a statement song, but here with ‘Edge of Glory, it’s very personal to her,” he explained. “It is very personal and very real; it’s a real moment. This record is all heart.” Garibay worked on “Edge of Glory” with Gaga and DJ White Shadow , who also revealed some details about the song to MTV News before its release, calling Gaga’s vocal delivery on the track particularly moving. “This song’s had room for her too … this is her natural tone. The vocal was one take,” White Shadow said. “The whole thing from top to bottom was her, just backstage singing it all the way through.” At the pop star’s request, Garibay threw in a heartbeat and made sure during production that it was clear Gaga’s “finding acceptance in the bridge.” He added, “It’s a bold move on her part to put this out there the way it is, where the full version is intact [on the radio]. When was the last time you heard a musical solo sax break in the middle of a song on the radio? It was innovative as a song and it was totally guided by the emotions and the heart. That’s what we did here. She wanted to put sax on it … Her references were E Street Band and Bruce Springsteen, so the isolation of what the sax represents in the music dichotomy, what it represents in the whole spectrum of music,” he said of the saxophone section, which is actually played by E Street’s Clarence Clemmons. “And that’s how we captured that feeling. It’s like that moment of acceptance and letting go. … She said, ‘Dude, there’s no boundary, go all the way.’ Her soft side is just as intense and as emotional as her intense, hands-in-the-air side you see onstage,” he added. Garibay couldn’t even imagine what a video for the song might look like. “We’re all excited,” he said. It’s always a surprise, but whatever it is, it’s going to be epic. … In this case, it’s edgy because it’s not edgy.” What’s your favorite Born This Way single so far? Tell us in the comments! James Durbin Doesn’t Think He ‘Failed’ On ‘American Idol’

‘I’m still clicking up the track,’ latest castoff says of his post-‘Idol’ career. By Gil Kaufman James Durbin is eliminated on Thursday’s “American Idol” Photo: FOX James Durbin had a weird feeling when he got to the “American Idol” studios on Thursday. “Something was off with the kinetic energy,” he said Friday (May 13) during a call with reporters. “I felt it in people’s body language. … There was a real somber feeling.” Asked if he was blindsided, then, by the news that he would be going home in fourth place on the show later that night, Durbin paused and said, “I’m not going to lie, I definitely was.” He said he “freaked out” a bit just before the show went on air and had a feeling that his ride might be over. With less than an hour of sleep since his surprise ouster, Durbin said the hours since his elimination had been a “whirlwind” of emotion. “I’ve been really thinking about why I came on this show and why I even auditioned in the first place,” he said. “It’s for my family and to try and give a voice to a genre of music that seems like it’s slowly fading away. I really accomplished a lot on the show, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.” While other fourth-place finishers, including rocker Chris Daughtry , have said not winning “Idol” was probably the best thing that ever happened to them, Durbin said he understood that sentiment, but “winning would have been just great too.” He said his first instinct when host Ryan Seacrest broke the news was to think about how badly he’d wanted to win and fight back the feeling that somehow he’d failed. But after some time to reflect, Durbin said he’d come around on that thought. “I haven’t failed at all,” he said, adding a refrain often heard from “Idol” finalists. “This is just the beginning.” The singer, who provided one of the most emotionally engaging moments of the season with his tearful farewell, compared the journey on “Idol” to a roller coaster, saying it has loops and corkscrews and that while some people think of elimination as the first step toward the crazy ride down the other side of the fame hill, he sees it differently. “I’m still clicking up the track,” he said of his wild ride yet to come. “I’m really, really stoked.” While some of his castmates have hooked up with movie starlets , Durbin said one of the biggest celebrity perks he enjoyed on “Idol” was becoming close to professional wrestler and “Dancing With the Stars” contestant Chris Jericho , whose show is filmed at the same studio as “Idol.” For the lifelong wrestling fan, who always idolized Jericho, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And given that Jericho fronts his own metal band, the boys bonded over body slams, life on the road and all things hard rock. Given the Hollywood-ready arc of his story — from his Asperger’s and Tourette’s syndrome to the death of his musician father from a drug overdose when James was 9 years old — someone asked who the singer might like to see portray him in a movie. At first, he was speechless and then said he might want to do the honors himself. But then he suggested Matt Damon, since some people have said he resembles the actor, and maybe Steven Seagal for his older incarnation, since he used to rock a Seagal-like ponytail back in the day. Durbin has lots of plans for his debut album. He’d like to work with Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy, reunite with guitar legend Zakk Wylde and bring out his “secret weapon,” his best friend from home who is a shredding guitar player. As he’s said before, James wants to bring back the classic metal sound, starting with an iconic singer/guitarist pairing along the lines of Wylde and Ozzy Osbourne or Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. And given the chance, he’d like to re-create the sound of his favorite record, the 1983 debut from late Black Sabbath metal screamer and solo star Ronnie James Dio, Holy Diver. He wouldn’t give any details, but Durbin said he heard the song that might be his first single Thursday. “I really dig it,” he said of the unnamed tune. “It’s something I can really work.” He described it as having a heavy edge, but also being radio-friendly enough to get airplay. With no regrets, Durbin did point out his one potential misstep on the show when asked why his number might have been called Thursday. Referring again to his friendship with wrestler Jericho, he noted that the last song Jericho danced to on “Stars” was, yes, Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” ” ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ eliminated James Durbin, Chris Jericho and Tony Soprano,” he said with a laugh. Jennifer Hudson Asks ‘Where You At?’ On ‘American Idol’

‘It feels good to be home!’ the ‘Idol’ alum exclaims after her performance. By Kara Warner Jennifer Hudson performs on “American Idol” Thursday Photo: FOX In the midst of the season’s most surprising results episode , “American Idol” alum Jennifer Hudson returned to the stage to perform the new single from her just-released album I Remember Me. After Ryan Seacrest proudly introduced J.Hud to the crowd, emphasizing the fact that the season-three contestant is the show’s only Oscar winner, Hudson took the stage to perform the ballad “Where You At?” Sporting a black dress with cut-outs at the shoulders accented with bits of gold, Hudson’s look was fresh, elegant and sophisticated, much like her performance of the song, which is filled with heartbreak and words of love lost. At the end of “Where You At?,” Hudson was warmly received by the enthusiastic audience. “It feels good to be home!” she exclaimed. One of the major highlights in Hudson’s performance, in addition to the song itself, was the sight of her fellow season-three contestant George Huff singing backup. Huff, who was as smiley as always, received a hearty round of applause as soon as Seacrest pointed him out to the crowd. Regarding Hudson’s new album , as well as her transformation — both mentally and physically — over the last couple of years, she recently told MTV News that she feels like a new person. “Oh my God! It’s like a new me. It’s like a new introduction of myself — for myself and to others as well — in every way, from image to music to everything,” she said. “And it’s like, in a way, for me, I’m rediscovering myself at the same time. I like the old me too … if I could just marry the two together, then I feel like I’m in good shape.” What did you think of Hudson’s new single? Let us know in the comments! Casey Abrams Saved On ‘American Idol’

Stefano Langone, Thia Megia join seeming front-runner in bottom three. By Gil Kaufman Casey Abrams Photo: FOX The thing about being a front-runner on “American Idol” is you never know when America’s voters are going to turn on you. Unlikely bearded sex symbol Casey Abrams learned that lesson the hard way on Thursday night (March 24) when he made a surprise visit to the bottom three. Actually, he was not only in the bottom three, he was the lowest vote-getter and, in the biggest surprise so far of the season, he had to sing for his supper to keep from being eliminated in one of the most chaotic finishes to an “Idol” results show in history. He ended up being bailed out by this season’s one and only judges’ save, but the scare was hopefully enough to teach all the remaining top 10 that nobody is immune this season. In fact, after two weeks of all-female bottom threes, on Thursday night’s show, not only did a male contestant almost go home, but the two bottom vote-getters were both boys, reversing the gender tide that had been building. In the end, it was Abrams on the chopping block. He began singing “I Don’t Need No Doctor,” the song that got him on the show in the audition round, but he had barely begun when Randy Jackson cut him off and asked for the musicians to stop. The tension filled the air as a confused Abrams looked around to see what he might have done wrong to anger the judges. “We were wondering when we heard the results, ‘Why is Casey at the bottom?’ We don’t know. You deserve to be here,” Jennifer Lopez explained, telling Abrams that when the judges heard the results, they knew immediately that they would pull the ripcord on the save. Casey, who has already taken two trips to the hospital to deal with a stomach ailment tied to stress, looked like he was going to be sick and was clearly overcome with confusion over the decision. “Are you kidding?” he said, visibly shaking as he went and embraced the judges, repeating the words, “I can’t believe it!” He fell to his knees as host Ryan Seacrest embraced him then raced out to hug his mother as the rest of the contestants welled up with tears at the emotional moment. “I thought that they … I knew if there was someone that got cut tonight … I thought they wouldn’t use the save,” Abrams stammered. “It’s unreal … I started singing and the fact that you cut it … scared the stuff out of me.” Lopez said when the judges heard the results they were confused and they knew they had to act. “We just want you to get back to the musician that you are,” she said. “No more antics … you deserve to be here.” Randy told Casey to cut out the growling and use his formidable skills and not lean on gimmicky tricks, such as his widely derided emo-funk take on Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” last week. What all the drama means is that two people will go home next week, but, as previously decided by producers, for the first time, 11 singers will go out on this summer’s tour. It was a wild cap to a night that never quite went the way many experts had predicted . Lauren Alaina, Pia Toscano and Scotty McCreery were the first trio brought out as Seacrest began building the bottom three early in the show. And, no surprise, all three made it into the top 10. The second group featured James Durbin and Paul McDonald, both of whom seemed like sure bets to make it through as well. And, of course, they were safe, though Durbin nearly had a heart attack when Seacrest called out the wrestling maniac’s hero, Hulk Hogan , to deliver the good news, as well as a smackdown to Seacrest. The third group was bound to feature at least one bottom-three dweller, but it was both Stefano Langone and teen Thia Megia who got the hook and headed to the cellar for the first time. There was more bad news when Abrams, Haley Reinhart and Naima Adedapo stepped up. When Ryan said he was sending someone back to safety, Naima pointed at Casey, assuming he was the one escaping the bottom, but she was shocked to get the pass herself. And then things went way off-track when season-long favorite Abrams was sent to the naughty stools for the first time in the finals after seemingly nailing “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” the night before. Megia was the first one sent back to safety, and after three weeks in which the judges have shown him endless love, suddenly Abrams did not have as self-satisfied a look on his face and seemed like he was feeling the pressure of potential elimination. It was a roller coaster of a night, all right, one that began with the top 11 wearing contrasting black suits and white sparkly dresses for a group sing-along to “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” But instead of the usual bland medley, none other than Motown legend Stevie Wonder came out to serenade them with his funky hit “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours.” Wonder then called out judge Steven Tyler and serenaded him with “Happy Birthday” on the rocker’s 63rd birthday. The show also featured a performance of the country-pop ditty “Stuck Like Glue” by twangtastic duo Sugarland and a visit from season three “Idol” finalist and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson , who performed the first single from her second album, I Remember Me, the funky, dramatic ballad “Where You At?” What do you think of the judges using their save on Casey? Did he deserve it? Let us know in comments below!
