David Archuleta Released from Record Label Roster

It’s a sad day for David Archuleta. The former American Idol runner-up, who captured the hearts of millions during his run to the finals against David Cook, has been dropped by Jive Records. Said a spokesperson for that company: “David was released from our roster.” Despite his cute face and positive attitude, music is a business – and Archuleta’s 2010 release, “The Other Side of Down,” sold just over 63,000 copies. This was a massive drop from the nearly one million CDs David sold of his self-titled debut. Now, more than ever, Archie will need the support of his fans. We encourage the musician to keep his head up and ask others to do the same.

They Must Be Building Snowmen In Hell: Kanye West Finally Learns How To Keep His Damn Mouth Closed

Kanye, forever a showman, brings us another epic moment in his illustrious career, his first ever silent interview. Last night, at the opening for George Condo’s exhibit “Mental States” at the New Museum, we’d just asked the artist — who recently painted the covers for Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy — if there were another musician he’d consider designing album artwork for (“Jimi Hendrix, but he’s not around anymore”), when we were suddenly joined by Kanye himself. The newly humble rapper granted us a brief but thoughtful interview. Are you happy with the paintings George did of you? [Kanye nods head yes.] You are happy? [Nods head.] Would you make any changes if you were to do a self-portrait? [Shakes head no.] Are you mute tonight? [Nods head.] Do you want to do sign language? [Nods head. Pretends to sign, then shakes our hand and walks away.] Even in silence Ye still seems to come off a lil cocky, guess you can only ask him to tone it down but so much. Source

Lady Gaga Makes Surprise NYC Nightclub Appearance

The Mother Monster sang two jazz standards on Wednesday during a set by her friend, Brian Newman. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga at the Oak Room on Wednesday Photo: Arnaldo Magnani/ Getty Images Lady Gaga loves to surprise fans with cameo appearances and performances. And on Wednesday night in New York City, Gaga did it again when she popped up at the Plaza Hotel’s famed nightclub, The Oak Room. Gaga took the stage during a scheduled set by her friend, singer/trumpeter Brian Newman, to perform two jazz standards, “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “Orange Colored Sky.” Before Gaga’s surprise performance, Newman expressed his excitement over the show, tweeting, “Looking forward to the gig at the @oakroomny @theplazahotel tonight! First show of 2011!!” For her set, Gaga donned long blond locks and a leather-bandage-style S&M dress along with garters. In a video posted online, Gaga displayed her strong singing ability while forgoing her usual raucous onstage antics as she belted out the tunes for the cheering crowd. The club’s staff posted news of the performance on its Twitter page as it happened, telling fans to come by if they could and keeping those who couldn’t in the loop. “Come to the packed @oakroomny @theplazahotel right now to see LADY GAGA — singing, dancing — its amazing!!!” they tweeted. “Lady Gaga @oakroomny right now singing LIVE!!!!!… its packeddd.” It’s not the first time that Gaga has surprised Oak Room clubgoers during a show by Newman. Mother Monster also performed at the New York hotspot back in September, wearing a dress made of human hair. “There were no tickets sold,” the club said in a statement at the time. “She sang three songs as a surprise gig because she’s friends with the musician we have on Wednesdays, Brian Newman.” Related Artists Lady Gaga

‘Glee’ Get Wistful With Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’

Rachel and Finn turn to the 1984 classic for a melancholy moment. By Aly Semigran Cory Monteith and Lea Michele in “Glee” Photo: FOX For all the Christmas songs out about mistletoe and merriment, there seems to be just as many, if not more, about loneliness and loss (’tis the season!). While this week’s Christmas-themed episode of “Glee” was heavy on the warm, fuzzy aspects of the holiday, things were anything but for newly split couple Rachel (Lea Michele) and Finn (Cory Monteith). And in the midst of a tree-shopping excursion, the crestfallen duo (with some backup help from their fellow “Glee”-mates) sang Wham!’s 1984 classic “Last Christmas.” Michele and Monteith are hardly the first to cover the wistful pop song, but no artists could have ever put their own touch on it without its originators, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley. The English duo released “Last Christmas” as an A-side with “Everything She Wants” on Epic Records in December 1984. It would eventually appear on the pair’s third and final album, Music From the Edge of Heaven. George Michael may have been mending a broken heart with this song, but the release of “Last Christmas” (which he wrote) marked a banner year for the musician. Earlier in the year, Wham! released two other Billboard chart-toppers, “Careless Whisper” and “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.” The song, which was released not soon after the Band Aid fundraiser smash “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” (which also features Michael), has the dubious distinction of being one of the biggest songs in U.K. chart history that never actually reached #1. But it has proved to have staying power and currently ranks at #14 on the Billboard Holiday Songs list. “Last Christmas” has since shown up on several Christmas compilations (including All Time Greatest Christmas Songs and Now That’s What I Call Christmas!: The Signature Collection ) and is a radio go-to throughout the holiday season. So, it’s no surprise that other artists have jumped on the opportunity to cry, “Last Christmas, I gave you my heart/ But the very next day, you gave it away/ This year, to save me from tears/ I’ll give it to someone special.” Taylor Swift, Jimmy Eat World, Ashley Tisdale, Carrie Underwood, Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay, Hilary Duff, Manic Street Preachers, Cascada, Whigfield, Billie Piper, Travis and Crazy Frog are just a select few of the notable names of those who left a note saying “I love you” and meant it. Now, the “Glee” cast is part of the ever-growing list, and as expected, it’s already spun some gold. The show’s Christmas album , which also features covers of other classics such as “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” “Jingle Bells” and “O Holy Night,” which is #10 on this week’s Billboard 200 and climbing to #4 on next week’s. Which was your favorite holiday song on this week’s “Glee”? Talk about it in the comments. Related Artists Wham!

Crystal Bowersox Is Engaged

‘American Idol’ runner-up will marry boyfriend Brian Walker. By Mawuse Ziegbe Crystal Bowersox Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Season-nine “American Idol” runner-up Crystal Bowersox is heading down the aisle. The singer’s rep confirmed to People that she’s set to swap vows with her musician beau Brian Walker in October. The impending nuptials come just months after Bowersox broke up with her longtime boyfriend Tony Kusian in the hours before her final “American Idol” performance. The singer explained that her bourgeoning fame wedged the couple apart. Both agreed that Kusian, who helped raise her toddler son, would prefer a low-key lifestyle. “He’s a small-town guy and that’s fine,” she told “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM radio program. “I’m a small-town girl, but I want this. I want this more than anything — this career, this lifestyle. I didn’t think he was up for it. He didn’t think he was up for it.” In addition to her upcoming wedding, Bowersox has been working on her major-label debut on 19 Recordings Limited and Jive. The earthy singer inked a contract within a day of the season-nine “Idol” finale but she has recently voiced her issues with her mainstream deal. “Just frustrated with the politics of the industry. Not just jive just dissapointing how the industry has changed,” Bowersox tweeted on Thursday. “Every1s hands are tied.” However, she didn’t appear to let the music industry politics get her down, later adding, “regardless, im having the time of my life,” before revealing she was recording “Farmer’s Daughter.” “Thanks for all of the support, guys,” Bowersox wrote to her Twitter followers. “I have more freedom than most signed artists, so imma stop complaining. I love what I do. I am blessed.” Leave your well-wishes for the couple!

Drake, Kanye West Collabos On The Ready Set’s Wish List

‘Definitely into remixes,’ frontman Jordan Witzigreuter tells MTV News of wanting to work with the hip-hop stars. By Jocelyn Vena The Ready Set’s Jordan Witzigreuter Photo: MTV News The man behind the Ready Set , Jordan Witzigreuter, released his debut album, I’m Alive, I’m Dreaming, earlier this summer, and while the LP doesn’t have any featured guests, the musician says he’s very much open to collaborating on his blend of pop, funk, techno and hip-hop. “I’d kind of like to collaborate with, honestly, anybody!” the Ready Set recently told MTV News. “I’m thinking to try and collaborate with some hip-hop artists, do something with Drake or Kanye West, whoever’s down to! Definitely into remixes and stuff.” Given today’s musical climate, where artists often drop other musical genres into their own personal song sauces, the Ready Set said the timing is perfect for experimentation. “I feel like nobody wants to buy an album that’s 12 songs [of] the same thing,” he said. For I’m Alive, he ensured he wouldn’t have a homogeneous sound by working with a range of producers, including J. R. Rotem (Rihanna, Leona Lewis, Plies). The result, he explained, are tracks that are fun to play for his fans. “It’s cool. It’s always exciting getting to play new songs,” he said. “It’s cool to see people starting to sing along. It’s good seeing people enjoy those songs because I obviously enjoyed writing them. … I’ve been working at something happening for like the past three years, [so] it’s cool now to see a glimpse of things taking off a little bit. The shows have been getting better and better. It’s really cool.” What do you think of the Ready Set? Would you like to see him nab a Drake or Kanye collabo? Let us know in the comments!
