Even in the Year 1076 Muslims Couldn’t Get Along with Their Neighbors

The First Crusade played a very important part in Medieval England. The First Crusade was an attempt to re-capture Jerusalem. After the capture of Jerusalem by the Muslims in 1076, any Christian who wanted to pay a pilgrimage to the city faced a very hard time. Muslim soldiers made life very difficult for the Christians and trying to get to Jerusalem was filled with danger for a Christian. This greatly angered all Christians. One Christian – called Alexius I of Constantinople – feared that his country might also fall to the Muslims as it was very close to the territory captured by the Muslims. Constantinople is in modern day Turkey. Alexius called on the pope – Urban II – to give him help. In 1095, Urban spoke to a great crown at Clermont in France. He called for a war against the Muslims so that Jerusalem was regained for the Christian faith. In his speech he said: “Christians, hasten to help your brothers in the East, for they are being attacked. Arm for the rescue of Jerusalem under your captain Christ. Wear his cross as your badge. If you are killed your sins will be pardoned.” Those who volunteered to go to fight the Muslims cut out red crosses and sewed them on their tunics. The French word “croix” means cross and the word changed to “croisades” or crusades. The fight against the Muslims became a Holy War. Many people did volunteer to fight on the First Crusade. There were true Christians who wanted to reclaim Jerusalem for their belief and get the Muslims out of the city. There were those who knew they had committed sin and that by going on the Crusade they might be forgiven by God. They had also been told by the pope that if they were killed, they would automatically go to heaven as they were fighting for God. There were those who thought that they might get rich by taking the wealth that they thought existed in Jerusalem. Any crusader could claim to be going on a pilgrimage for God – pilgrims did not have to pay tax and they were protected by the Church. http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/cru2.htm added by: congoboy

Joe Klein & Matthews Link Anti-Muslim ‘Attitude’ to ‘Deranged Muslim’ Violence, Small-Town Whites Miss ‘Ethnic Purity’ of Past

On Sunday’s syndicated Chris Matthews show, during a discussion of a poll reporting that a majority of self-described Republicans expressed a negative view of Islam, as Time magazine’s Joe Klein recounted incidents of recent violence in America by Muslim extremists, host Matthews asked if “this [anti-Muslim] attitude against them” was to blame for “stirring them up,” leading Klein to agree that anti-Muslim attitudes played a role: JOE KLEIN, TIME MAGAZINE: You’ve had over the last year, two or three major incidents of deranged Muslims, the Army doctor down at Fort Hood, the Times Square bomber, who were Americans, American citizens. CHRIS MATTHEWS: And what’s stirring them up? This attitude against them? KLEIN: Yeah. But I also think that there’s a small minority of Muslims in the world who believe this extremist philosophy. After Matthews questioned whether opposition to the Ground Zero mosque and “apocalyptic talk by people like Glenn Beck” exist because the President is black, Klein painted small-town white Americans as resentful that modern America no longer has the “ethnic purity” of the past, with Matthews responding, “Well said.”: KLEIN: A good part of the anxiety that’s going on in small-town white America isn’t just the plain old black and white stuff of the past. It’s the fact that South Asians are moving in and running the local motel or … there are a lot of Latinos about who are moving into these areas, that their grandchildren are coming out as gay or intermarrying. The purity of, the “ethnic purity,” to coin a phrase, that they grew up with no longer exists, and I think that that in addition to the economic – real, real, economic problems… MATTHEWS: Well said. I think that is the change, the whole change in the world they live in is something. Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Sunday, August 29, syndicated Chris Matthews Show: CHRIS MATTHEWS: Let’s talk about the mosque in New York. We’ve got a poll out here, an amazing poll that came out this week: 54 percent of Republicans say they have an unfavorable view of Islam – the religion, not Arab politics, not terrorists, no subset, the billion Islamic people in the world, they don’t like. Serious business here. KATTY KAY, BBC: I think that this has gone beyond the mosque. MATTHEWS: These are Republicans. KAY: That this is now, the conversation that has followed the mosque has almost become a bigger problem in and of itself, and the tone of that conversation. One of the advantages that America has always had is that you have one of the most assimilated, moderate Muslim populations in the Western world, and that has played to your advantage. The risk here is that incidents like a taxi driver, a Muslim taxi driver getting stabbed in New York- MATTHEWS: By a probably deranged person. Let’s be fair. KAY: It is deranged people in Holland who shoot Muslims, you know, in the streets. That is (INAUDIBLE) JOE KLEIN, TIME MAGAZINE: Yeah, but there are, but, you know, you’ve had over the last year, two or three major incidents of deranged Muslims, the Army doctor down at Fort Hood, the Times Square bomber, who were Americans, American citizens. MATTHEWS: And what’s stirring them up? KLEIN: Well, I think that- MATTHEWS: This attitude against them? KLEIN: Yeah. But I also think that there’s a small minority of Muslims in the world who believe this extremist philosophy. KAY: But the risk for America is if you start putting all of those extremists in with all of Muslims. And that’s what’s being blurred here. … MATTHEWS: Is it based on the fact that we have an African-American President? If we had a President- KLEIN: No. MATTHEWS: -like Hillary Clinton right now, would we have the same level of apocalyptic talk by people like Glenn Beck, the same attitude towards this mosque which is a couple blocks away from the World Trade Center on a row of buildings? KLEIN: First of all, we have a mixed race President who has a middle name “Hussein.” And a good part of the anxiety that’s going on in small-town white America isn’t just the plain old black and white stuff of the past. It’s the fact that South Asians are moving in and running the local motel or, you know, I don’t want to deal in those sorts of cliches, but there are a lot of Latinos about who are moving into these areas that their grandchildren are coming out as gay or intermarrying. The purity of, the “ethnic purity,” to coin a phrase, that they grew up with no longer exists, and I think that that in addition to the economic – real, real, economic problems – (INAUDIBLE) MATTHEWS: Well said. I think that is the change, the whole change in the world they live in is something.

Russell Simmons Shows Support For Controversial NYC Mosque

Mogul spells out the word ‘coexist’ on the windows of his apartment, overlooking the proposed site. By Mawuse Ziegbe Russell Simmons (file) Photo: Jerritt Clark/ WireImage Russell Simmons is making his stance on a planned mosque near New York City’s Ground Zero site well-known. The hip-hop mogul has spelled out the word “coexist” on the windows of his downtown apartment, which is near the location where a Muslim community center named Park51 — which according to the center’s website includes a mosque — is slated to be established. Several black-and-white signs emblazoned with symbols of faith, such as the Christian cross, the Star of David and the peace sign, spell out Simmons’ message of religious pluralism. According to an article posted on Simmons’ Global Grind website, the mogul worked with artist Glen E. Friedman to conceive the installation. “I was trying to figure out ways I could reach people and promote a message of tolerance,” Simmons told The Associated Press on Wednesday (August 25). “The fact that it is a public discussion, that there’s so many against it is what I think is disappointing to me, that so many people don’t know that we founded our country on the First Amendment.” The proposed center has sparked controversy and protests because of the community center’s proximity to Ground Zero, where the World Trade Center skyscrapers that were decimated in the September 11 attacks once stood. Opponents of the center, including former Alaska governor Sarah Palin , insist building a mosque so close to the location is inappropriate. Supporters of Park51, which include President Obama , say that religious freedoms extend to all Americans and must be defended. In response to those opposed to Park51, Simmons said the future of the community center is not just an issue for Muslims. “It’s for Jews, it’s for Christians, it’s for African-Americans and other non-Muslims to stand up and protect the rights of the Muslims involved in this debate,” Simmons said. “It’s an American principle, it should offend every American.” Do you agree with Russell Simmons about the planned Muslim community center near Ground Zero in New York City’s? Robert Reich Falsely Accuses Newt Gingrich Of Saying ‘Muslims Are Like Nazis’

Robert Reich on Sunday falsely accused former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich of saying Muslims are like Nazis. As NewsBusters reported last Monday, Gingrich was quoted by the New York Times as saying that building a mosque at Ground Zero “would be like putting a Nazi sign next to the Holocaust Museum.” Gingrich elaborated on “Fox & Friends” that very morning: Nazis don’t have the right to put up a sign next to the Holocaust Museum in Washington. We would never accept the Japanese putting up a site next to Pearl Harbor. There’s no reason for us to accept a mosque next to the World Trade Center. Unfortunately during the Roundtable segment of ABC’s “This Week,” Reich claimed without challenge that Gingrich said, “Muslims are like Nazis” (video follows with transcript and commentary, file photo):  ROBERT REICH: But the upsurge in kind of Islamophobia, George, cannot be explained by anything, it seems to me, other than a kind of intolerance that is fed by — I don’t want to say this, don’t want to believe it — but it seems to me the same kind of intolerance that is feeding the anti-immigrant fever in the United States. It comes from a deep-seated fear and anxiety in Americans right now that is rooted, in turn, in the economy. I mean, people are ready to believe Newt Gingrich when he says that the Muslims are like Nazis. That’s outrageous. Actually, what’s outrageous, Bob, is that you would make such a false accusation on national television and nobody would call you out on it. Gingrich did not say that Muslims are like Nazis. He said that allowing a mosque at the site where thousands of innocent Americans were senselessly murdered by radical Islamists would be like allowing the Nazis to put a sign next to the Holocaust Museum. That you would not only misinterpret this as a comparison of all Muslims to Nazis but also say it on national television is the height of intellectual dishonesty, and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Mosque Leaders Are Not Planning to Move, and Other Cordoba House Developments! [Controversy]

Arab TV Director: Ground Zero Mosque would be ‘Monument’ for Terrorists

The director of Al-Arabiya TV, a popular Arab-language news station, wrote that “Muslims never asked for” the proposed mosque at Ground Zero, and “do not care about its construction,” in a column for London daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat on Aug. 16. “I can’t imagine that Muslims [actually] want a mosque at this particular location, because it will become an arena for the promoters of hatred, and a monument to those who committed the crime,” wrote Al-Arabiya director Abd Al-Rahman al-Rashid in the column , which was translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute. “Moreover, there are no practicing Muslims in the area who need a place to worship, because it is a commercial district. Is there anyone who is [really] eager [to build] this mosque?” Al-Rashid said that President Barack Obama’s support of the mosque was similar to the administration’s previous decision to close Guantanamo Bay and try suspected terrorists as civilians. “”Muslims do not [really] yearn [to build] a mosque near the 9/11 cemetery, nor do they care whether bin Laden’s cook is tried in a civilian court [or a military one],” said al-Rashid, noting that “tens of thousands of Muslims, likewise accused of extremism, are imprisoned in [even] worse conditions in the Muslim countries.” According to the director, Muslims care about issues that impact “the destinies of [entire] peoples,” such as the creation of a Palestinian state. “The last thing Muslims want today is to build a religious center that provokes others, or a symbolic mosque that people will visit as a [kind of] museum next to a cemetery,” said al-Rashid. Al-Arabiya TV is based out of the United Arab Emirates, and is a direct competitor with Al-Jazeera, another Arab-language news station. Al-Arabiya “is consistently rated among the top pan-Arab stations by Middle East audiences,” reported BBC News in 2003. According to Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol, al-Rashid’s column “should mean the end of plans for a mosque near Ground Zero.” “Mr. Al-Rashid supports President Obama’s stand for the mosque in principle (as he supports Obama-like or even beyond-Obama-like policies with respect to the Middle East). He’s no neocon. But his practical case against building the mosque is irrefutable,” wrote Kristol on the Weekly Standard website on Aug. 17. “It should lead well-meaning liberals to join with us dastardly conservatives (well, it would be too painful for them to join with us—they can simply act in parallel, on their own, while continuing to denounce us) in calling for the organizers to shelve the plans for a mosque at this site.”

In Support of Terrorism…State Dept helping Imam Rauf build sharia mosque at Ground Zero?

All religions should be kept out of government. Yet the Muslim Brotherhood has secretly worked here for five decades to destroy America from within. They advocate sharia law which, in Islamic countries: stones to death 14-year old girls and old women for “adultery,” flogs un-married couples found together un-chaperoned; excuses gangs that rape “immodest” women; tortures gays and hangs them from light poles; dismembers apostates; cuts the heads off those who speak against the Koran’s war-mongering and discriminatory passages; and levies a ‘devalue-added’ tax against all non-Muslims. They want religious freedom eliminated from this good earth in the name of Allah and America is their prime target. Islam should not lord over where sharia-complying Muslims committed genocide and brave American heroes fell. When Imam Rauf denounces da’wah, the Muslim Brotherhood, Egyptian Islamic Jihad, Hamas, Hezbollah, al Qaeda, political Islam, sharia, and 1400-year old hate-speech, I’ll bring my shovel and help break ground for his Cordoba House. Barring that, Rauf should stick his House of Da’wah in an Islamic-governed nation, but not anywhere in America where the light of liberty still shines. http://creepingsharia.wordpress.com/2010/07/16/state-dept-helping-imam-rauf-buil… added by: congoboy

-Ground Zero: NY Says No to Rebuilding a Church Destroyed on 9/11 but Yes to the Mosque?

The ‘Ground Zero Mosque’ controversy keeps on going. President Obama weighed in over the weekend with a few comments that hit the fan so to speak. One observation he made is that Islam should be treated just like any other religion in America and I totally agree. In a previous post I commented that I believed that NY was giving preferential treatment to the Cordoba Mosque project and that I really doubted that a church would ever approved by the city to be built at the same location as the so-called ‘Ground Zero Mosque’. Turns out that I was entirely correct. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church which stood across the street from the World Trade center was reduced to dust on September 11, 2001. For 9 years the NY Port Authority has refused to let them rebuild their church—a church that was actually destroyed in the attack but plans for a new mosque are approved by the city? It is my view that St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church should be rebuilt. The President talked about private property rights and that the Muslims should be allowed to build on their own property near ‘Ground Zero’. Well, what about the property rights of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church? The church had been there since 1922 but their rights are being totally disregarded. The church that was destroyed in the 9/11 attacks should be rebuilt first before any new project like the Cordoba Mosque is considered. It is obvious to me that the Muslims in this case are receiving better treatment from the city than the church. Here’s an article written by George Demos who is running for Congress in that very area about the Church and the Mosque: “Rebuild the Church at Ground Zero, Not the Mosque” http://answersforthefaith.com/2010/08/17/ground-zero-ny-says-no-to-rebuilding-a-… added by: congoboy

Cenk Suggests The 70% Of Americans Who Oppose Ground Zero Mosque Are ‘Ignorant’

Different host, same liberal bias . . . Subbing for Ed Schultz on MSNBC this evening, Cenk Ugyur suggested that the roughly 70% of Americans who oppose the Ground Zero mosque are “ignorant.”  Ugyur was debating the mosque matter with Republican strategist and former Newt staffer David Winston.  Winston suggested that the people behind the mosque could, in light of the overwhelming oppposition of Americans to the plan, show sensitivity by agreeing to site it elsewhere. That provoked Cenk’s snide insult, which, as you’ll see, actually revealed his own lack of knowledge on the subject . . . DAVID WINSTON: What I’m saying is, 70% of this country doesn’t like this idea. There’s a unique opportunity for Muslims to show, look, we understand Americans have difficulty with this, and we’re willing to have, to move somewhere else.  There’s just a sense of like, look, if we’re going to cooperate and get along, and things are going to work, people are going to have to understand the concerns that other folks have — CENK UGYUR: So you’re saying, you’re saying two things from what I’m hearing. One is, if 70% of the country is ignorant, we should back that up. If they don’t know the Constitution or they think Muslims are the same as al Qaeda, we should back that up.  Cenk suggests that those “ignorant” Americans “don’t know the Constitution.”  But if he had taken the time to inform himself of the poll question that CNN had put to people, and which generated the overwhelming response, he would have found that it read [emphasis added]: “As you may know, a group of Muslims in the U.S. plan to build a mosque two blocks from the site in New York City where the World Trade Center used to stand. Do you favor or oppose this plan? ” So that 70% [68% to be precise] weren’t asked, and weren’t opining, that they thought Muslims didn’t have a right to build the mosque. They were simply expressing their personal opinion to the effect that they “oppose the plan.”  And that is their constitutional right.  So who’s ignorant now?
