‘The Green Hornet’ Buzzes To Top Of Weekend Box Office

Seth Rogen’s action comedy stings its way to first place, while Vince Vaughn and Kevin James’ ‘The Dilemma’ settles for second. By Josh Wigler “The Green Hornet” Photo: Sony Pictures Seth Rogen as a superhero? Michel Gondry directing a big-budget mainstream action flick? If you had asked a handful of movies fan a year ago whether those were good or bad ideas, most would probably lean toward the latter. Well, those same fans would be wearing green egg all over their faces today, as Rogen and Gondry’s “The Green Hornet” had a sharp enough sting to easily win first place at the box office this past weekend. The Sony Pictures action comedy overcame years filled with bad buzz to rake in $34 million during its first weekend in theaters. It’s not an astounding number given the production budget behind “Green Hornet,” but the action-packed and gut-bursting story of pals Britt Reid (Rogen) and Kato (Jay Chou) seems to have the kind of longevity that could sustain itself over the next couple of weeks. Indeed, the only action competition it faces over the next month are “The Mechanic” and “I Am Number Four,” the first of which premieres in two weeks while the latter arrives toward the end of February. That still gives plenty of time for “The Green Hornet” to leave its mark at the box office. “The Dilemma,” the controversial Ron Howard-directed comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, followed behind with $17.4 million in second place. Vaughn- and James-led films typically perform a lot higher — “Grown Ups” secured $40.5 million in its opening weekend in 2010 while “Couples Retreat” snagged $34.3 in 2009, and with the added ingredient of an Oscar-winning director at the helm, it’s a bit curious that the comedy didn’t meet the two leading men’s usual standards. “True Grit” continued to blaze forward on the ol’ dusty trail with a third-place finish that brings the Coen brothers Western’s grand total up to $127.4 million. Rounding out the weekend’s top five performers were “The King’s Speech” in fourth place and “Black Swan” in fifth, solid results that come hot on the heels of their respective wins for Best Actor (Colin Firth) and Best Actress (Natalie Portman) at the 2011 Golden Globes . The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Green Hornet” ($34 million) #2 “The Dilemma” ($17.4 million) #3 “True Grit” ($11.2 million) #4 “The King’s Speech” ($9.1 million) #5 “Black Swan” ($8.1 million) Upcoming Releases Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher have “No Strings Attached” at the box office next weekend, while Ed Harris and Colin Farrell search for “The Way Back” in Peter Weir’s new film. Golden Globes Fashion: Justin Bieber, Natalie Portman Go Ultra Glam

Sleeves, sequins and hot guys rule Globes red carpet. By Jocelyn Vena Natalie Portman at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards Photo: Getty Images If the Golden Globes are the Oscars’ more casual sister, nobody told Hollywood: Celebs went ultra glam at the show on Sunday (January 16). Sure, all the guys looked dapper in their suits, but a slew of young Hollywood’s newest studs really turned up the fashion charm. Justin Bieber looked like the perfect prom date in his tuxedo with tie, vest and kicks. He completed the look with purple 3-D glasses, and his date for the night was “Never Say Never” director Jon Chu. Looking equally posh was Robert Pattinson in his sleek black Gucci suit. Shout-outs to Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Gosling , who looked perfectly dashing in their tuxes. For photos of all the stars on the Golden Globe red carpet, click here. The ladies rocked the sequins. “Tron” actress Olivia Wilde dazzled in her sparkly, hoop-skirted gown by Marchesa, but her bed-head was a bit too casual for the look. Anne Hathaway went for full-on beading in her floor-length taupe gown by Armani. Meanwhile, Megan Fox , also in Armani Priv

Critics’ Choice Awards Love The Social Network And Natalie Portman As Much As Everyone Else Did

Last night the Broadcast Film Critics Association doled out their yearly accolades for the best acheivements in film, with many of the usual suspects getting the gold. The Social Network won best picture, Natalie Portman best actress, Colin Firth best actor, and so on (although Inception cleaned up fairly well in the technical categories. Might this be a portent for bigger things?). At this rate, the Golden Globes might be a bit of snoozefest. The full list of winners after the jump.

Kanye West Trash Talks Britney on Twitter

Kanye West pulled a Kanye West and trash talked Britney Spears and her #1 single, ” Hold it Against Me ,” on Twitter. Jokingly, we think. Mostly. “Yo Britney, I’m really happy for you and I’mma let you be #1, but me and Jay-Z’s single is one of the best songs of all time! LOL,” Kanye wrote. West’s Tweet, of course, is a reference to his infamous Taylor Swift MTV VMA speech hijacking and to Kanye’s new song “H.A.M.” (featuring Jay-Z). While West later removed the Tweet, Spears’ manager Adam Leber appeared none too impressed when he responded on the pop singer’s behalf. “Thanks for ‘letting’ us be #1,” Leber wrote. “Much appreciated.” West later apologized for it, telling fans, “On a serious note I’m truly happy for Britney Spears. No hate in 2011… I thought LOL signified a joke.” Typically yes, but when you’re a total loose cannon, sometimes the public won’t automatically assume you’re lighthearted or poking fun at yourself. In any case, these guys aren’t kidding about taking town Brit.
