Skrillex, 12th Planet Play To Sold-Out L.A. Crowd

Skrill’s high-energy gig with Diplo was part of six-show EDM series in Los Angeles. By Lara Kathleen Kelley Skrillex and 12th Planet perform in Los Angeles Photo: Michelle Oglakhchyan It’s officially Skrillex week in Los Angeles, where MTV’s EDM Artist of the Year just finished his second gig in a series of six back-to-back shows, each spotlighting diverse talent in the now-reigning dubstep scene. Wednesday night’s gig at CYP2, a popular bi-weekly indie dance music event, featured Skrillex performing a back-to-back set with 12th Planet, Diplo and UK producer Caspa for a jam-packed crowd at the Echoplex. “The show sold out in under 20 minutes,” said Danny Johnson, co-producer of CYP2. “Skrillex and 12th Planet are best buds, Caspa is a dubstep don and Diplo has championed these artists from day one, so the lineup made perfect sense and the fans went crazy for it.” As soon as the doors opened, partygoers piled in, energy high and anticipation permeating the air. Music pumped from the speakers by DJ Franki Chan, owner of the IHeartComix label and CYP2 co-producer. Then DJ/producer Diplo lit up the crowd with bass-heavy beats and hard-core hip-hop tracks. But it wasn’t until Skrillex took the stage with 12th Planet that the fans went crazy and began screaming, chanting and moshing for the dubstep duo. Skrillex pumped up the fans and held them at his fingertips with tracks like “Breakin’ a Sweat” and “Right on Time.” The set included all of their popular singles as well as remixes of Avicii’s “Levels,” La Roux’s “In for the Kill” and Rusko’s “Hold On.” Their two-and-a-half-hour set kept the crowd on their feet and begging for more bass until the lights came on. 12th Planet, born John Dadzie, had nothing but great things to say about the five-time Grammy-nominated artist formerly known as Sonny Moore. “Skrillex and I met at Ultra Music Festival a few years ago and have been good friends ever since,” he said. “We started doing collaborations together, and he would sing vocals during my sets. Since then, Skrillex has become a beast, and now when I get the opportunity to work with him, I learn as much as I possibly can. 12th Planet, recently deemed “U.S. dubstep godfather” by dance-music magazine Mixmag, spent much of 2011 on tour with Skrillex. “Performing with Skrillex reminds me of how much fun it is to tag-team DJ with one of your good friends. I love the chemistry that comes together when I play with Skrillex … we can pretty much connect by E.S.P. during our sets.” Just this month, 12th Planet released his five-track free-for-download The End Is Near. It will be complimented by a 28-city North American tour that kicks off on February 2 in Miami, Florida. The week-long Skrillex takeover continues with a show Thursday (January 26) night at the Exchange in Downtown L.A. followed by massive gigs at the Avalon in Hollywood Friday night, the Palladium on Saturday and L.A. Live on Sunday. Are you planning on seeing Skrillex live? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos Best EDM Artist Of 2011 Debate Related Artists Skrillex

Too $hort, Lil’ Kim Tried To Make ‘Musical Sex’ On ‘Call Me’

‘We tried to, like, have sex on the song,’ Too $hort tells ‘RapFix Live’ of he and Lil Kim’s 1997 collabo. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Too $hort Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Too $hort has built quite the reputation with the ladies in his 30-plus years in rap. Songs like “Freaky Tales” and “I’m a Player” expertly showcase Short Dog’s ability to swoon women with his raps, so when his record label requested that he work with Lil’ Kim on the 1997 single “Call Me,” Kim’s then on-and-off boyfriend the Notorious B.I.G. was more than a little concerned. “I paid for the tickets for Kim and her manager to come to Atlanta and I went to pick them up to take them to the studio and who gets off the plane? No Lil’ Kim, it was Biggie,” Too $hort recalled with a laugh when he appeared on Wednesday’s episode of “RapFix Live.” Though $hort and B.I.G. had built a good rapport before the Brooklyn great was slain in 1997, prior to recording with Kim, they didn’t really know each other. Too $hort remembers B.I.G. coming off the plane on a pair of crutches that he was forced to use after he was involved in a car accident. The two sat down to talk, and according to $hort, the Notorious one inquired about the Oakland rapper’s intentions with his artist and sometime love interest. “So what’s goin’ on with you and Kim? What’s happenin’?” Too $hort remembered Biggie asking. After $hort explained to Big that he only was interested in recording with Kim for his single, the “Juicy” rapper approved the collaboration. “He wanted to know what was goin’ on with his little thang before he let it happen,” $hort said. “So I explained it to him… and sure enough she showed up on the next flight. We got in the lab and we worked it out.” Kim, who titled her 1996 debut album Hardcore, had become known for her sexually explicit lyrics, just like Too $hort, but the first version of “Call Me” didn’t quite meet expectations, $hort revealed. “Believe it or not, we did the song and everybody said, ‘Man, it’s not dirty enough’,” $hort laughed. Eventually they re-recorded the dirty version that fans have come to know. “We tried to, like, have sex on the song,” he said. “It wasn’t physical sex, but we tried to make musical sex. I think we achieved it.” Did you catch Too $hort on Wednesday’s ‘RapFix Live’? Share your thoughts on the interview in the comments! Bow Wow ‘Needed To Live Life’ To Make Underrated

‘I had to go through a lot of things for me to be able to write the type of things I’m writing now,’ Bow tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Bow Wow on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Bow Wow has grown up in hip-hop, but in order to deliver his upcoming seventh album, Underrated, the Cash Money MC had to go through some real-life experiences. “I feel like with this album, it’s so different, because I had to live life to make this album,” the 24-year old rapper told Sway when he visited “RapFix Live” on Wednesday. “I had to go through a lot of things for me to be able to write the type of things I’m writing now, to understand my fans, to be on the ground level. Not above my people, but right there with my people,” he continued. “I would probably need another three years to live before I can create another one. Just so I could go through different things.” As far as the album title, Bow used it as motivation. “The more and more I kept sayin’ the word ‘underrated,’ I realized how many others of millions of people out there probably tuning in right now who probably feel like they’re underrated,” he said. “I’m sure there is an underground rapper out there who can rap hard and he want his break.” Despite all his platinum plaques and sold-out tours, Bow Wow still feels like he doesn’t get his just due. He hopes that will change once the album drops. Bow recently debuted the first video from the album, for “Sweat” with Lil Wayne , and he has already clocked in collaborations with Lloyd Banks. Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Jadakiss and Meek Mill and still plans to record with Wiz Khalifa. Though there isn’t a concrete release date in place, Bow Wow estimates Underrated will drop in April. Wiz Khalifa Is ‘Perfection,’ Amber Rose Gushes

‘I cook him breakfast every morning. I rub his feet, I give him kisses,’ Amber Rose says on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Amber Rose on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Amber Rose went through a range of emotions when she appeared on Wednesday’s episode of “RapFix Live.” The radiant model spoke excitedly about her new single, “Fame,” and also broke down in tears when she described how she is bullied on the streets. But when the subject of her boyfriend, Wiz Khalifa , came up, Rose turned gleeful. “He’s so freaking cute, that’s my baby right there,” Amber gushed. “He’s beautiful, he’s perfection to me. I don’t see any flaws when I look at him.” Wiz and Amber aren’t married , though a rumor that they tied the knot did swirl in September. They do, however, live in the same building — practically next door to each other, Amber explained. “When we met, we fell in love and then he moved to L.A. and he wound up moving in my building and we just started our life like that together,” she said. “It’s good, we’re not married yet, and it’s good that we still have our separate places. I have a lot of clothes, so my clothes are not going to fit in his condo at all.” Rose is all about her man. The model went into great detail on the lengths that she goes to for Khalifa. She is quite the cook, and Wiz is particularly fond of her spaghetti. “I get up in the morning, I cook him breakfast every morning. I rub his feet, I give him kisses, feed him breakfast in bed,” she listed. “I clean the house, I run the shower for him; I iron his clothes and whatever he wants. “I love him; I would do anything for him. He is a spoiled brat when it comes to me. I don’t let him lift a finger; I do everything for him,” Rose continued. “I am the wife, I take care of all that. He doesn’t have to do anything.” The couple’s love is a two-way street, and Amber assures us that the rapper reciprocates her feelings. “He respects me, he loves me, he gives me all that in return,” she said. “We kinda do that to each other.” Do Amber and Wiz seem like the perfect couple? Young Jeezy On Gucci Mane Rift: ‘It Was Nothing’

Jeezy tells ‘RapFix Live’ the whole thing started because he couldn’t perform with Gucc while recovering from throat surgery. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Young Jeezy Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News It was all just a misunderstanding. After Young Jeezy appeared on Gucci Mane ‘s 2005 track “Icy” but later refused to perform the record with Gucc, things between the two rappers got tense. When the Snowman appeared on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” he revealed that what Gucci Mane didn’t know was it was Jeezy’s secret throat surgery that kept him from performing the record. “When I met homey, he was just a guy hanging at the studio and he was fan. And I took to him and ’cause I just liked the way he got down, he was always cool, he was always excited,” Jeezy said of how he and Gucci first met. Jeezy — who was the hottest street rapper at the time — agreed to do “Icy” with Gucci Mane and even helped put the record together, he said. But soon after, he lost his voice, so when a request to perform the song came through to Jeezy’s people, he declined without giving a reason. “Around that time is when I lost my voice,” Jeezy revealed to Sway. “But nobody knew that I lost my voice but, like, maybe four of my homeboys. Def Jam didn’t know, nobody knew. “I think they got offended, but he didn’t know that I lost my voice and just had surgery and was laying on a deathbed not knowing whether or not I would be able to speak again.” It is important to note that the two MCs have since called a truce . But before they made a peaceful resolution, Jeezy and Gucci traded subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle barbs on record. The drama even spilled onto the streets . “It just started then and turned into something else,” Jeezy said. “I just felt like he was getting disrespectful about the situation because he wasn’t being a businessman about it and understanding.” Jeezy, who is set to drop his fourth album, TM 103: Hustlerz Ambition, on December 20, told Sway that he believed the media made it out to be more than it was. “It’s over now. But for what it’s worth, it was nothing,” he said. In August, Gucci Mane had a similar stance when he sat with Sway on “RapFix Live.” “On the strength of [the fact that] anything could have happened between not just me and him [but] between our camps, we just came to a sit-down of just respecting the fact that somebody can get hurt, and it ain’t going to be us,” Gucci said of the truce. “That’s what made us do that.” Don’t expect a future collaboration between the former foes, however. “I think we should just stay away from that totally,” Jeezy said. Kim Kardashian Will ‘Work It Out,’ Pal Trina Says

‘I just know that Kim is a great person. She’s a very sweet person,’ Trina tells ‘RapFix Live’ about Kardashian’s decision to divorce. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Trina Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News These days it seems like everyone is talking about Kim Kardashian’s divorce from Kris Humphries . Sometimes it’s on purpose, like when we asked Chelsea Handler and Wendy Williams to weigh in, and sometimes it’s unintentional, as was recently the case with Mariah Carey . Regardless of where Hollywood stands on Kim’s short-lived marriage, there are those who are extending their love and support to the reality starlet. One of those supporters is rapper Trina , who attended the summer wedding and has the fondest memories of the lavish ceremony, which was attended by the former couple’s closest 400 friends and relatives. “I just know that Kim is a great person. She’s a very sweet person and whatever is going on, I’m sure she’ll work it out and they’ll fix it,” Trina said on “RapFix Live” this week. “I was at the wedding. It was very beautiful and, of course, I’m like, wishing her all the best and the support and everything. Things just happen [that are] like weird, just weird.” While many of the events of the splashy bash remain memorable, it was sister Kourtney Kardashian’s little boy who remains a fan favorite. “To me, the best part was to see her walk down the aisle. It was just amazing, and her little nephew, Mason, I think he was the cutest thing, like running up and down,” she said. “It was a really, really beautiful intimate ceremony.” Like Trina, fellow Kim K pal La La Anthony is sticking by her girl through all the post-divorce thick and thin. “Of course I was surprised by the news,” she explained earlier this week. “Anytime someone gets a divorce, it’s a difficult time. All I can do is be her friend and support her through every part of it, and that’s what I’m doing.” Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ With Trina Related Artists Trina

Trina Teams With Rick Ross On Post-Slip-N-Slide Album

‘Ross has been a mentor in my career from the start,’ she says on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Nadeska Alexis, with reporting by Sway Calloway Trina on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Trina released her debut album, Da Baddest Bitch, via Slip-n-Slide Records in 2000, and she remained with the Miami-based label to drop four additional LPs, including her most recent, 2010’s Amazin’. But when she stopped by MTV News’ “RapFix Live” on Wednesday (November 9), Trina confirmed that her upcoming sixth album would signal the end of an era with Slip-n-Slide. “I’m no longer considered to be affiliated with Slip-n-Slide,” Trina said. “Slip-n-Slide is like my family. I grew up with those guys, and it’s been a long journey. I love them dearly, but it’s time, in my career, for me to move forward, and I’m excited about taking the next step and seeing what’s there for me.” Trina emphasized that her split with the label was an amicable one and a necessary step in her evolution as an artist. “It’s scary after you’ve been with somebody for all of your career to step out on your own,” she said. “You’re wondering which way to turn, but I’m ready and willing to do what I need to do for myself. “I’m not the kid on Slip-n-Slide’s roster anymore,” she continued. “I’ve spent my whole career with Slip-n-Slide — five albums — and I’m really excited about going forward without them, but I still look at them as family, no matter what.” During her sit-down with Sway, Trina also revealed that she’s been working with Rick Ross to craft her sixth album, which inevitably led to questions about a possible deal with Rozay’s Maybach Music Group. Trina wouldn’t confirm (or deny) if she will be the latest addition to the squad, opting only to speak about her relationship with Ross. “Ross has been a mentor in my career from the start. Even before the world got a chance to see him, he was a part of my team,” she said. “For him to come out and be very successful and do his thing and for me to still have him in my life, it’s a blessing. For me to work with him on my sixth album and have him there to guide it, understand what I want and see my vision, that means everything to me.” What are you expecting from Trina’s work with Rick Ross? Mobb Deep Confirm Nas Collabo On Black Cocaine

They also hook up with Bounty Killer for ‘Dead Man’s Shoes,’ duo reveals on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Mobb Deep Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Mobb Deep have quite a few notable collaborations with rap heavyweights like 50 Cent , Lil Kim and Raekwon, but when it comes to chemistry, their in-studio vibe with Nas is unmatched. The Queens rap duo appeared on Wednesday’s (October 26) “RapFix Live,” and confirmed to host Sway that they will once again be hooking up with God’s Son on their upcoming November EP, Black Cocaine. “We got Nas on the album, we got Bounty Killer on there — that’s it so far,” Prodigy said. “It’s just like a warm-up project, so we didn’t want to put too many people on there. It’s just a Mobb Deep thing, really.” Dancehall star Bounty Killer appears on the menacing “Dead Man’s Shoes” and Nas on an unnamed track. “We worked with Nas because that’s the home team,” Prodigy said. “I know people miss hearing that Mobb Deep/ Nas collaboration, because every time we do a song, it always comes out real good and stands the test of time, always.” In April, shortly after Prodigy was released from his three-year prison bid, Esco and the Mobb hooked up for the Alchemist-produced “Dog Sh–,” but before they could get together on a song, Prodigy and Nas had to iron out some minor differences. “Yeah, it was a little something, but it wasn’t nothing serious,” P said. “It wasn’t serious enough for us to just stop making music together and stop hanging out and messing with each other.” Upon getting home, Prodigy — who wrote about his up-and-down relationship with Nas in his book, “My Infamous Life” — gave Nas a call to patch things up. “Different personalities clash sometimes, but when you’re family, nothing’s stronger than that bond,” Havoc said. “I feel like Nas is like family, so we can get through whatever.” Are you glad Mobb and Nas are working together again? Irv Gotti Says He’s ‘Best Man’ For Def Jam Presidency

‘If you let Def Jam die, you’re gonna let a bit of the culture die,’ he tells ‘RapFix Live,’ fearing label’s lack of leadership could lead to its demise. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Irv Gotti Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News When you think of the great Def Jam executives, Russell Simmons, Rick Rubin, Lyor Cohen and Kevin Liles all come to mind. But don’t forget to credit Irv Gotti with helping rebuild the legendary hip-hop label in the mid-1990s. After producing for Jay-Z ‘s independent debut, Reasonable Doubt, Gotti helped set up the now-infamous deal between Hov’s Roc-A-Fella and Def Jam. DMX , in all his multiplatinum glory, came next, and Ja Rule followed, all brought to Def Jam by Gotti. Now, the Murder Inc. founder wants to head the seminal rap record company. “I wanted to speak on this because I love the hip-hop culture with a deep, deep passion,” Irv Gotti said when he visited “RapFix Live” on Wednesday (October 5). “Def Jam is the light of that culture; Def Jam personifies the hip-hop culture. There is no other hip-hop label like Def Jam.” Irv acknowledged the contributions of late label executive Shakir Stewart but criticized former Def Jam Chairman and CEO L.A. Reid and said there hasn’t been a proper president at the company since Jay-Z left at the top of 2008. Gotti, like Violator’s Chris Lighty, has always had his name come up whenever rumors of who will take the label’s reins surface. “If you don’t want to hire me — the best man for the job, the man who will die for it — cool, I understand. You think I’m Suge Knight, you think the feds may come in here again if you hire me, cool,” the music producer said referring to the money-laundering charges he beat in 2005 . “Put somebody in there, because you not giving any sign or any indication that you care about my culture.” Gotti said the company that serves as a home to Rick Ross, Young Jeezy and Fabolous has a talented roster but needs leadership. Irv recalled the time when Cohen went to DMX’s Yonkers, New York, neighborhood to sign the rough-around-the-edges hitmaker. He also told host Sway a story about how Lyor once played basketball against the LOX at the famed Rucker Park. He’s also worried that if someone isn’t brought in soon, the label will eventually crumble. “This is helping our lives. This is a culture that is deep for us. You can’t let it die, and if you let Def Jam die, you’re gonna let a bit of the culture die,” Gotti pleaded passionately. “And the fact that you ain’t got no one up there leading the army and ain’t had nobody — you just let the artists come up there, give you a record and you put it out. That’s not what Def Jam is about.” Do you think Irv should lead Def Jam? Let us know in the comments!
