Wiz Khalifa And Mac Miller Ham Up Rap Beef On ‘RapFix Live’

The Pittsburgh pair refuse to look at each other in their first joint interview. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Call them hip-hop’s odd couple. Though they both hail from Pittsburgh and are signed to local indie label Rostrum Records, Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller absolutely hate each other — well, not really. On Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” the ‘Burgh’s finest appeared together for their first joint interview. Rather than play things straight, the pair decided to have a little fun on set. “Why is he here?” Wiz asked, throwing his hands in the air after host Sway Calloway brought Mac onto the “RapFix Live” set. “I’m getting hated on on this couch man; can I get my own couch?” Mac responded. Sway tried to play peacemaker, but Wiz and Mac weren’t having it. The two were cordial enough to sit down on the red couch together, but refused to face each other. “I haven’t seen you in a while man, you looking good,” Khalifa said, looking away from Miller trying to break the playful tension. “Thanks, wish I can say the same for you, man,” Mac responded, trying his best to hold in his laughter. A beef between Pittsburgh’s two biggest rap stars would be quite problematic, considering that the duo are planning to hit the road together this summer on the Under the Influence of Music tour . Khalifa and Miller will be joined by Taylor Gang’s Chevy Woods as well as TDE’s Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q on the nine-show run. Though they remain good friends, Wiz and Mac have built their own careers separate from each other. There are only a few low-key collaborations between the pair, but they plan to record together again soon. “Me and Mac are gonna collaborate together because that’s what I want to do, it doesn’t matter what he wants to do. What I say goes,” Wiz said in character. “We’re gonna do a song, because we’ve had a plan this whole time,” Mac revealed. “Actually I need Mac. I’m trying to use his success to boost my album because it’s about to come out,” Khalifa joked. Will you be attending Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller’s Under the Influence of Music tour? Juvenile Down For Hot Boys Reunion With Lil Wayne

‘As long as Juvie living, it’s definitely possible,’ MC tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Juvenile on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Before Lil Wayne became the solo rap superstar he is today, he was making his mark as a member of a noted hip-hop group: The Hot Boys consisted of Juvenile , B.G., Turk and a teenaged Tunechi, and together they broke down doors for independent Southern artists everywhere by establishing Cash Money Records as a musical powerhouse. The quartet dropped their debut LP, Get It How U Live!!, in 1997, which they followed two years later with their platinum sophomore album, Guerilla Warfare, but the group was rendered defunct after Juvie, B.G. and Turk left Cash Money to take on new ventures. Fans have since longed for a reunion. On Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” Juvenile said of a reunion, “It’s possible. As long as Juvie living, it’s definitely possible.” Though he isn’t signed to YMCMB, Juvie maintains a relationship with both Wayne and Birdman. “I got a relationship with Cash Money; me and Baby still cool. We don’t talk every day, but we do talk, and we can stand in a room together. It’s not a situation where I’m beefed out with them,” he explained. Add DJ Khaled to the list of folks awaiting a comeback for the group. Sitting next to Juvenile on the “RapFix Live” couch, Khaled said, “I’m a fan first when it comes down to the Hot Boys, and it’s the whole Cash Money era, so Juvie already know and Bird already know, I would love to see that.” Unfortunately, there won’t be a full Hot Boys reunion any time soon because both Turk and B.G. are currently imprisoned. In 2005, Turk was convicted of multiple firearm-possession charges after a 2004 shooting incident with a police officer. In December of last year, B.G. plead guilty to felony weapons-possession charges stemming from a 2009 arrest. “B.G. got dealt a bad hand,” Juvie said. “He’d had his run-ins with the law through the years, so I guess this one caught up with him.” What’s your favorite Hot Boys song? Drake And Tyga’s Bay Area Sound Gets ‘Love’ From E-40

‘That’s Bay Area-influenced, but they give it up,’ Forty tells ‘RapFix Live’ of ‘The Motto’ and ‘Rack City.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway E-40 and Sway on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News There’s no question that Bay Area artists have set a number of hip-hop trends. From their slang to their sounds, the rap community in Oakland, San Francisco, Vallejo and other surrounding California cities has contributed quite a bit — even if credit is not always given. “Right now, we got ‘The Motto,’ we got ‘Rack City’ — hit records, smash hits,” E-40 said of Drake’s and Tyga’s respective singles when he appeared on Wednesday’s “Across the board, they killin’ ’em. That’s Bay Area-influenced, but they give it up. You know Tyga, Drake, it’s all love.” Tyga’s “Rack City” peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this year, while Drake’s “The Motto” reached #15. Both songs feature a deep rolling bass line and crisp drum tracks, a beat style popularized by Bay Area artists, including E-40’s “Function” single and LoveRance’s “Up!” Drake, who hails from Toronto, and Tyga, who is from L.A., have credited the Bay with pioneering the sound. Drizzy even shot his video for “The Motto” in front of the Golden Gate Bridge and featured local ambassadors like E-40 and Mistah F.A.B. in the clip. Forty Water is happy to see his hometown getting its sonic just due but also remarks that there is some resistance in the industry to Bay Area artists. That’s why local artists haven’t fully capitalized off of their own ingenuity, he argued. E-40 believes local Bay Area rappers have plenty of songs like “Rack City,” but he takes nothing away from the YMCMB spitter. “No disrespect to Tyga, he doin’ his job. He got the platform; he spit good game on there,” Forty said. “The lyrics got a lot to do with it too, it wasn’t just the beat. The man showed up.” Do you hear the Bay influence in today’s music? Killer Mike Making ‘Mayhem’ With El-P, Grand Hustle, Big Boi

MC is especially ‘excited’ to reunite with Big, along with Pill, on an album. By Rob Markman Killer Mike on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Killer Mike is working overtime. Not only does the Atlanta rhyme slinger have R.A.P. Music, his collaborative album with underground hip-hop producer El-P, Mike told “RapFix Live” that fans can expect an array of different projects coming very soon. “El-P from Company Flow and Def Jux, he produced the entire album,” Mike said. “I got R.A.P. Music dropping May 15. A week later, my man El-P is dropping Cancer for Cure, so we’re trying to make mayhem.” Mike’s R.A.P. Music acronym stands for Rebellious African People’s Music, and the lead single, “Big Beast,” features Bun B, Trouble and T.I. After he releases that, the Grind Time Official boss plans to drop more material with T.I. After all, Killer’s 2011 album, Pl3dge, was released through Tip’s Grand Hustle label and was received rather well. Also in the works is a collaborative project from Killer, Big Boi and Pill. The trio have been talking about releasing a project for some time now, but no music has surfaced yet. “Me and [Big Boi] ain’t really got in on a project in six years, so I’m excited to be working with him,” Killer Mike said, referencing their 2005 compilation album, Got Purp? Vol. 2. In a January interview with MTV News, Pill talked about what the upcoming project meant to him. “Them two are rap greats, and for them two to actually want to do a project with me, it’s unbelievable,” he said. Still, the trio are still recording, and there is no telling when the album will drop; they haven’t even revealed a name for the group yet. “I’m gonna let Big hold it down. He ain’t tellin’ nobody, so I ain’t tellin’ nobody,” Killer Mike said. Which upcoming Killer Mike project are you looking forward to the most? Tell us in the comments! Trayvon Martin’s Death ‘An Assassination,’ Killer Mike Says

‘He was killed by a terrorist,’ Atlanta MC declares on ‘RapFix Live,’ while Prodigy adds, ‘[Zimmerman] murdered that kid for no reason.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Killer Mike on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Speculation over what happened the night of February 26 when 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was tragically shot dead continues to run rampant. On Wednesday, police surveillance video emerged showing the gunman, George Zimmerman, in handcuffs. The fact that he wasn’t charged with a crime that night and was release has fueled a public outcry for justice. Among the outraged are rappers Killer Mike and Mobb Deep’s Prodigy , who both appeared on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live” to discuss Trayvon’s death. Killer Mike called the shooting “an assassination.” “He was killed by a terrorist; there is no other way to put it,” Mike said, as he and “RapFix” host Sway wore hooded sweatshirts in a symbolic show of support for the teen, who died wearing a similar article of clothing. Via Skype, Prodigy said, “It’s definitely a murder, that dude just murdered him in cold blood. The dude, Zimmerman, I don’t know what he thought he was doing, but he murdered that kid for no reason.” It has been reported that Zimmerman called 911 on the night of February 26 after he saw Trayvon, who was wearing hoodie, walking through the Sanford, Florida, gated community where he lived and served as a neighborhood watchman. The police dispatcher instructed Zimmerman not to pursue the teen, but he reportedly ignored those instructions. What happened then is unclear, but when Sanford police arrived on the scene, Trayvon was dead. Zimmerman claimed Trayvon attacked him and he acted in self-defense, and police didn’t charge him with a crime. Critics who have watched the police-surveillance footage said Zimmerman doesn’t appear to have injuries consistent with his beating account, but the footage is grainy. Prodigy believes Sanford police should have immediately charged Zimmerman. “The burden of proof is on the person that’s claiming self-defense,” he said. The case has tremendous racial undertones: Zimmerman is a white man of Hispanic origin, and Trayvon was black. Killer Mike said he’s particularly concerned with the “Stand Your Ground” law, Florida legislation that allows a person to kill in cases of self-defense. The Atlanta MC believes that young black men should be armed to protect themselves under the confines of the law. “If you live below the Mason-Dixon line, gun laws allow you to arm yourself; you should be armed,” Killer Mike urged. “Because we live in a state where we are hunted, we live in a state that allows the conditions of black men to walk around in fear.” Prodigy believes that if Zimmerman isn’t charged, similar incidents might occur. “What the police department out there is doing is they’re gonna start a trend of people that’s just gonna go out there and think they’re neighborhood watch or whatever, and they’re just gonna clap whoever they feel like clappin’,” he said. Nas To Take On Uncle Sam On Life Is Good

‘My side of the story is on the record,’ MC tells ‘RapFix Live’ of his multimillion-dollar tax woes. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nas on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News If you want to know Nas ‘ take on his multimillion-dollar tax woes, then you’ll have to buy his new album. In February, TMZ reported that Queensbridge MC owes more than $6 million in back taxes, and now the Internal Revenue Service plans to garnish wages earned from his music publishing until things are even Steven. Ever the wordsmith, Nas got creative with his “no comment” comment when he appeared on “RapFix Live” on Wednesday. “My side of the story is on the record and I speak about it on the record,” he said of how he plans to address his tax troubles on his upcoming Life Is Good LP. Speaking of his 10th solo album, God’s Son told Sway that the LP’s title is evolving. “The record is starting to take on a whole different new thing and it’s just bigger than Life Is Good now,” he explained. “Yeah, life is good, but there’s so much information I think that’s important that I get out there that I think the title is becoming bigger.” And if the album’s first two singles are any indication, Life is Good is anything but happy-go-lucky. “Nasty,” the LP’s first single, which the rapper released in 2011, is a sonic throwback to the gritty, New York-style rap of the 1990s. Nas’ latest single, “The Don,” is also reminiscent of a different era of rap. The Heavy D and Salaam Remi-produced track samples reggae star Super Cat and finds Nas rapping about his days hustling in the street and his hip-hop beginnings. Nas hasn’t announced a release date for Life is Good yet, but it’s hard to imagine that he’d have anything nice to say toward Uncle Sam. What are you hoping to hear from Nas on Life Is Good ? Tyga’s ‘King And Queens’ Shares Name With Nas’ New Label

Tyga tells ‘RapFix Live’ that his Nas-assisted track shares its name with God’s Son’s new label. By Rob Markman Tyga on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Don’t let the popularity of “Rack City” fool you. Tyga ‘s recently released Careless World: Rise of the Last King is packed with 21 joints (23 if you buy the iTunes bonus tracks). Among the most notable are the Lil Wayne-assisted “Faded” and “King and Queens” with Nas and Wale. This isn’t the first time Wale and Tyga have collaborated; the D.C. spitter appears on the official “Rack City” remix, but for Nas to link up with the Young Money newcomer is a big deal. “I feel like it crosses every angle, and the song is consistent. It doesn’t fall off,” Tyga said of “King and Queens” when he appeared on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” “From my verse to Wale to Nas’ verse, it’s just a perfect song from beginning to end. “[Nas] actually has a label called Kings and Queens that he just started, so he was like, it’s just clich

The-Dream To Drop ‘Kill The Lights’ Single Today

Love IV track features Dream’s new artist Casha. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway The-Dream on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News The-Dream is ready to take his show on the road. In preparation for his Love IV album, the singer/songwriter is getting ready to embark on a new tour, and on Thursday (February 23), he’s planning to drop a new song to commemorate the run. The Kill the Lights Tour will begin March 11 in New York, and The-Dream is dropping his new single of the same name. “The name of the song is actually ‘Kill the Lights,’ featuring my artist Casha,” he said on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” The song will be featured on the upcoming Love IV, which the ATL crooner estimates will be out in the spring or summer — he doesn’t want to put an exact date on it. The-Dream already dropped the LP’s first single, “ROC,” earlier this year, and in addition to his new LP, he wants to concentrate on grooming Casha, who made her first appearance on The-Dream’s free digital album 1977 singing a remake of Minnie Riperton’s “Love, Stop Making a Fool of Me.” “I’m just channeling and building her the right way and giving her the right time,” he said of his new artist. “I’m not trying to get, ‘She better come out and sell this’; I’m not doing that. She’s too talented for that.” Instead of creating microwave hits with Casha, The-Dream would rather take his time. “She’s going to sell on her own, she’s great, she’ll be fine,” he said. “I’m trying to slow-bake it.” What are you expecting from The-Dream’s new music? Chris Brown ‘Birthday Cake’ Cameo Was Rihanna’s Idea

Songwriter The-Dream tells ‘RapFix Live’ of Rihanna, ‘She’s my friend, so whatever she wants to do is whatever she wants to do.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway The-Dream on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Fans were shocked and some outraged when they heard Rihanna ‘s “Birthday Cake” remix with ex-beau Chris Brown . The-Dream, who wrote the song, admits that he was a bit surprised when Rihanna told him that she’d like to include the man who once assaulted her on the track, but the “Shawty is a 10” singer was far more understanding than Rih Rih’s detractors. “At the end of the day, she’s my friend, so whatever she wants to do is whatever she wants to do,” The-Dream told Sway when he appeared on “RapFix Live” on Wednesday (February 22), just two days after Rihanna released the controversial remix. The-Dream remembers first getting the call from Rihanna while driving in Miami. “I think I’m gonna put Chris on it,” he remembers the Talk That Talk singer saying to him over the phone nonchalantly. “I don’t know which Chris you talkin’ about, [but] OK, cool, whatever you say,” The-Dream remembers responding. Of course there is really only one Chris, and The-Dream came to grips with the reality that the two would be coming together in song after the damaging 2009 assault that left Rihanna battered and bruised and Brown public enemy #1. “She’s pretty smart too. The same questions that went through my mind, and I’m an artist also, had to have gone through hers,” The-Dream told “RapFix Live.” “When she raised the question to me, I know she’s not crazy. So my thought was you’ve been thinking about this, you’ve already thought it out, so evidently you know what reaction you gonna get.” The singer/songwriter said that he was just happy that she gave him enough forewarning that he too could prepare for any type of backlash. Still, despite the rumblings of whether or not Rihanna is sending the right message collaborating with Chris on “Birthday Cake” as well as Brown’s “Turn Up the Music” remix, The-Dream says that it all boils down to forgiveness. “Don’t say you know how to forgive when you don’t,” he warned. “Everybody knows what took place, cool. Have the power to really forgive if that’s what it is, if not stay on that side of the fence from the beginning.” In no way did The-Dream condone Brown’s behavior on that February night in 2009, but he does suggest that it is time for people to move on. “It’s easy to kinda throw Chris under the bus all the time, but c’mon, man. OK, we get it,” he said. Do you support Rihanna’s decision to work with Chris Brown again? Leave your comment below!
