From crumping to alien space dancing, sexy ladies stole the show at the Salt Lake City auditions. By Natasha Chandel Witney Carson on “So You Think You Can Dance” Photo: Season nine of “So You Think You Can Dance” just got hot … real hot. The Salt Lake City auditions not only brought forth some stupendous dancers but also scored the first tickets on judge Mary Murphy’s infamous hot-tamale train. Ballroom was the predominantly featured dance style Wednesday night, although we saw glimpses of everything from crumping to burlesque jazz to (you guessed it) alien space dance. In the audition episodes thus far , the men have managed to stand out just a little more than the women. Well, Salt Lake City just tipped the scale in favor of the ladies, leaving judge Nigel Lythgoe and guest judge Adam Shankman drooling. Here’s our “tamales” rundown from last night’s show. Hot Tamales Kicking off the show in high gear was Witney Carson. Not only did her sensual cha-cha tango receive praise for its technique, she made slaves out of the judges. “I am a slave for you,” Shankman proclaimed, while Lythgoe commented on her “smoking-hot face” and compared her to season 3 ballroom favorite Anya Barnis. But the greatest compliment may have been in the form of a simple, shrill scream from Mary Murphy declaring her the season’s first ticket holder on the hot-tamale train. Carson wasn’t the only dancer awarded a golden ticket. Deanna Tomasetta was dubbed “special,” giddy but super-fierce crumper Mariah Spears was called “tremendous,” and burlesque jazz dancer Rachel Applehans was applauded for her confidence. Odd Tamales No reality competition series is complete without its share of oddballs, and the Salt Lake City auditions found its odd tamale in Lynn Gravatt. A former aerospace engineer, Gravatt gave it all up to pursue her passion for dance. Alien space dance, to be exact. Claiming “something” comes through her to make her move, Gravatt performed enthusiastically for the judges. Of course, they didn’t put her through, but Gravatt had achieved her goal of showing the world you can be anything you want to be. Odd things do come in green packages. Gene Lonardo sure did. The real shocker of the night, Lonardo decided to paint himself green and perform the life story of a male praying mantis. Yes, you read correctly. What seemed like a disaster waiting to happen actually turned out to be the surprise of the night. “You’re so brilliant,” Shankman told the unbelievably agile dancer, whom the judges felt would be a treat for contemporary choreographer Sonya Tayeh. Sad Tamales There were a few sad stories interspersed throughout the show, including that of Dareian Kujawa, who was kicked out of his home and disowned for his pursuit of dance. Leroy Martinez, a heavier-set dancer, had overcome a rough childhood and was now giving back through an after-school dance program. Although both put forth commendable efforts, projecting true spirit, neither was granted a golden ticket. Martinez did receive a standing ovation from the judges and the crowd. Contestant Adrien Lee had a different story. After being cut at the last stage in season seven of “SYTYCD,” Lee was disheartened, as was Murphy, who had the tough job of delivering the bad news. After taking a year off, he decided to try again and won yet another ticket and another chance to make his dreams come true in Las Vegas. Salt Lake City was the final audition city before the big cuts in Vegas, and it definitely featured some of the sexiest dancers of the lot. Whether any will actually make it to the top 20 remains to be seen, but next week we will be one step closer to finding out as “So You Think You Can Dance” moves on to Sin City. Who was your favorite dancer on “So You Think You Can Dance”? Let us know in the comments.
‘Things change so much from week to week,’ the author tells MTV News of returning to the vampire franchise in the future. By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Stephenie Meyer Photo: MTV News The final installment of Stephenie Meyer’s vampire saga, “Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” hits theaters this fall, showing newlywed Bella Cullen in all her red-eyed, ice-cold-skin glory. It’s been a long journey since “Twilight” released in 2008 and many fans are sad to say goodbye to their beloved franchise. But when the credits roll on November 16, it may not be the end of Edward and Bella’s story. When MTV News flew out to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to visit Meyer on the set of “The Host,” the author revealed she has a few more story lines in mind for the couple. “Things change so much from week to week, let alone year to year. I mean, there are other stories, obviously,” she said. “I have a really hard time putting down characters and so I know what would happen. It’s just a matter of, ‘Are we tired of vampires?’ I kind of feel like maybe we are as a general group.” Us, tired of vampires? Never! But Meyer did admit — even if we’re still up for more bloodsucking tales — she’s a little worn out on the creatures. “It might take some time to want to go back there. And of course, for me it’s easier ’cause I know exactly what happens so there’s not as much suspense and stress for myself.” Fans of the “Twilight” series may recall Meyer’s venture back to Forks when she wrote the first novel from Edward Cullen’s perspective, “Midnight Sun.” The story was leaked online, causing the writer to put its release on hold. For those of us who are itching to get our hands on a copy, we may have to wait a few years. “You know, I’m trying to stay away from the vampire stuff because I do think if I can focus on other things, I’ll recharge a little bit there. I haven’t really looked at anything vampirish for a little while,” she said. “Someday, like on my deathbed or whatever, if I never get around to writing it, I’ll tell everyone what happens. I’ll just narrate for a little bit.” “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” is up for two MTV Movie Awards this year under the categories Best Kiss and Movie of the Year. Characters rule in the L.A. leg, with Marshea Kidd and Cole Horibe especially impressing the judges. By Natasha Chandel Cole Horibe on “So You Think You Can Dance?” Photo: FOX “So You Think You Can Dance” returned with its third round of auditions, landing smack in the middle of LaLa Land. Characters ruled in the Los Angeles leg of the competition, in an episode reminiscent of a Hollywood blockbuster. Guest judge Jesse Tyler Ferguson of “Modern Family” joined judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy in narrowing down the dancing field. While hip-hop, animation and exorcism ruled in the season premiere of “SYTYCD,” the second episode was saturated with contemporary routines full of sensuality, sadness and … martial arts? It was the dancers’ unique personalities that brought their talents to life. Starlet The heroine came early but left a serious mark with the judges. Eliana Girard, a trained dancer, circus performer and pole dancer, wowed the judges with her mile-long legs and emotional connection to the dance. Murphy said Girard was “Definitely top 20 material,” while Lythgoe commented, “You are one of the best girls this year.” Girard received a standing ovation and a sweet golden ticket to Vegas. Comic Relief Jontel “Johnny Waacks” Gibson — need we say more? “I think I was born in the wrong era,” Gibson said of himself in his intro package as he donned a bright ’70s-inspired outfit to go with his revival of the dance style “waacking.” More than his dance, Gibson had the judges splitting with laughter as they made reference after reference to the sexual innuendo behind the word “waacking.” The waacking routine was not the first in the show’s history, and Gibson did not make it through to Vegas after falling flat in the choreography round. Stunt Doubles Hilarity ensued upon the arrival of twin brothers Nick and James Aragon, a.k.a. the “Ninja Twins.” The athletes-turned-dancers entertained to the max with their twin jibber jabber — finishing each other’s sentences, speaking simultaneously and ribbing one another about who was the “best.” After their joint performance, Lythgoe exclaimed, “You have made this show for me, right now.” Unfortunately, the eccentric siblings were two years too old for the 30-year eligibility cutoff required and could not make it through but were praised for their talents and told to get a reality show. Victim Every story has a victim, and in this episode, it was 18-year-old Sam Lenarz. After multiple disagreements with her mother, the teenager was thrown out of her home and taken in by her best friend’s family. The pain of the ordeal was evident in her performance. Jesse Tyler Ferguson pointed out that her routine was laden with “simmering sadness, in a beautiful way.” Things turned up for Lenarz after she was granted a go-ahead to move on in the competition. Action Hero Cole Horibe proved to be more than a pretty face, as most action heroes do, with a martial-arts-infused dance that showed off his inhuman strength and control. Performing with extreme precision, the judges called Horibe’s legs “lethal” and without blinking offered him a ticket to Vegas. The decision was easier after Horibe jokingly threatened to come after the judges if they didn’t. Villain What story would be complete without a villain? OK, a reformed villain, to be precise. And Wednesday night’s came in the form of Jonathan Anzalone, a former contestant from season four who returned to humble himself after his first audition debacle on the show. Anzalone was criticized for his arrogance and returned to prove to the judges and the world that he had matured and respected their decisions. Their final decision: good, but not good enough. Anzalone was not allowed to move on. Scene-Stealer The real scene-stealer of the night, though, was Marshea Kidd. The 22-year old had auditioned unsuccessfully in seasons past but returned with a whole new take on dance and life. Kidd had survived a horrific car accident just six weeks prior, pronounced dead on arrival to the hospital. His “SYTYCD” audition was his first time onstage after breaking his neck and coming out of a coma. Kidd’s beautiful performance illuminated the stage and his new zest for life was felt by all in the room. Speechless, the judges merely waved a golden ticket in front of Kidd and reduced him and his family to tears. The dancers in Los Angeles more than lived up to the judges’ expectations and took the show further with their diverse characters. “So You Think You Can Dance” returns next week in the Dirty South. ‘I think that you should be able to do whatever you want to do,’ T.I. tells ‘RapFix Live’ about his stance on same-sex marriage. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway T.I. on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News President Obama is no stranger to hip-hop’s support. Not only have MCs dedicated songs to the 44th U.S. Prez, but guys like Jay-Z , Diddy and Ludacris have openly backed Barack. While many criticized Obama for his support of same-sex marriage , Hov backs him, and so does T.I. “Just to speak honestly and being frank, I don’t care,” the “Live Your Life” MC said about the non-stop debate on same-sex marriage when he appeared on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” “I think that if a matter doesn’t affect your daily life, you shouldn’t take a hard stand on it. If it’s not something that directly affects you, if it doesn’t affect you, what difference does it make to you what other people are doing with their lives?” Tip, who is currently serving probation stemming from his 2007 weapons arrest, is unable to vote, but once his probation is lifted in September he revealed that he plans to vote for Obama, who will be looking to secure a second term as head of state. “I don’t think that’s a hard question,” he said. During an interview with CNN on Monday, Jay applauded the president for speaking out in support of the gay-rights movement. “I’ve always thought it as something that was still holding the country back,” Jay-Z said. “What people do in their own homes is their business, and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. It’s no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination, plain and simple.” “I think that you should be able to do whatever you want to do,” T.I. remarked. “I don’t see how it matters one way or another.” Related Videos T.I. ‘I think it’s good just to get the first debut album out the way and you can progress to your next album,” Quez tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Travis Porter has a busy summer ahead of them. With their debut album, From Day 1, set to drop on May 29, the Atlanta trio are also hitting the road on tour and getting ready to release a new film. Quez, Strap and Ali first started to make noise in 2008, and after waiting four years to drop their first LP, the group is pretty anxious to put their plans in motion. “I think it’s good just to get the first debut album out the way and you can progress to your next album,” Quez said when the group appeared on “RapFix Live” on Wednesday. “It’s a nervous feelin’,” Ali said of the days leading up to their release. One of the pressures of releasing a major-label album is having to meet certain sales figures, particularly during the first week of an album’s release. “It’s a lot of pressure working on your first album, leading up to the release,” Strap said. “But we had so much fun putting the work into this album, being so creative, I feel like we won’t have nothin’ to worry about.” All things considered, though, the group is just thrilled to be able to see their hard work begin to pay off in a major way. After the album drops, they’ll hit the road on the No Sleep Till Atlanta Tour — a nod to their admiration for the Beastie Boys , who in 1986 released the classic track “No Sleep Till Brooklyn.” Travis Porter is also looking to release an unnamed film on June 29. The movie finds Travis Porter on the road living the rapper life. That is until they run into a bit of trouble. “The bus breaks down in some crazy town called Red Rock. And it’s run by these drug lords and they try to kill us off before we get out of their town because they think we gonna tell what’s goin on in the town,” Ali explained of the story’s plot. “So we gotta fight our way out of the town.” Are you planning to buy Travis Porter’s debut, From Day 1 ? ‘It’s just a structure that can’t be moved and that would be me,’ Face tells ‘RapFix Live’ about meaning behind album title. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Scarface on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Four years ago, when Scarface dropped Emeritus, , he said it would be the last album in a long, illustrious career that included well-regarded works like 1994’s The Diary, 1997’s The Untouchable and 2002’s The Fix. But just like Jay-Z, Too $hort and other MCs who have pledged to walk away from rap, the Houston, Texas, lyricist just couldn’t stay away. Face’s follow-up Rooted is on the way, and when the former Geto Boy moseyed up to on Wednesday, he firmly replanted his hip-hop flag. Rap retirement is clearly a foregone feeling, as the man born Brad Jordan breaks down the significance of his new album title. “It’s just a structure that’s gonna be there. It’s like a concrete pillar, you can’t get it out the way, it’s there, it’s grounded,” he says of Rooted. “It’s just a structure that can’t be moved and that would be me.” The veteran MC estimates that the LP is about 98 percent done, but Face is also a well-documented perfectionist; if he could, he’d tinker with an album for years before releasing it. “You’re gonna see an album this summer,” Scarface promised, before humorously backtracking, “or this fall, winter.” When Rooted does arrive, it’ll feature vocal contributions from Akon, Cee Lo, John Legend and Jadakiss and production from Virginia beatsmith Nottz and underground favorite Jake One. Ultimately Scarface credits California producer Ervin “EP” Pope with helping to refine Rooted. “I got some good stuff. EP saved the project,” he said of the producer who has crafted beats for Ne-Yo and Game. “I just sent him my whole album, that’s how much I cared if he leaked it or not, but instead he finished the tracks, he put the hooks on, he put some instruments in and he made the album. I appreciate EP for what he did.” What’s your favorite Scarface album? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos Travis Porter And Scarface Mix It Up On ‘RapFix Live’ Related Artists Scarface
Track’s producer, SpaceGhostPurrp, is a onetime Taylor Gang detractor, Wiz tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Wiz Khalifa Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News If Wiz Khalifa had let a little dis song get to him, his fans would have missed out on some pretty cool music. In fact, “T.A.P.” — one of Khalifa’s favorite songs off of his latest Taylor Allderdice mixtape — was produced by A$AP Rocky producer SpaceGhostPurrp, a onetime Taylor Gang detractor. For those unfamiliar with Purrp’s catalog, in 2011 he released a song called “F— Taylor Gang,” on which he rapped, “This ain’t no Wiz, so f— a Khalifa.” The song didn’t hit Wiz’s radar at first, but the Purrp-produced A$AP Rocky track “Pretty Flacko” did. “I love that beat. I’m like, ‘Man, that beat is hard as hell,’ ” Wiz said when he appeared on last week’s “RapFix Live.” After hearing “Pretty Flacko,” which dropped on New Year’s Day, the Taylor Gang captain immediately took to Twitter to express his appreciation for SpaceGhost’s work. Shortly after, the emerging producer hit Wiz back suggesting that they record a song together, and of course Khalifa agreed. “Then somebody was like, ‘You know he put out a song about you,’ ” Wiz recalled of how he first learned about “F— Taylor Gang.” “I checked the song out and when I listened to it I kinda figured out what it was,” Wiz explained, not taking offense at Purrp’s lyrics. “Just being young people and being competitive, going for a spot, you don’t always know that it’s cool to let somebody know that you’re a fan of theirs, and that’s why I always try to reach back to people who are in their early stages and let ’em know I listen to your music and I like your music.” After hearing the track, the “Black and Yellow” MC cleared the air with SGP. “After that he sent me that crazy beat, and me and Juicy went in,” Wiz said of how “T.A.P.” came about. Odd Future’s Domo Genesis found himself in a similar situation when he and Wiz collaborated on their “Ground Up” single in February. Domo, who released his debut album, Rolling Papers, online for free in 2010 took exception when Khalifa announced that he’d be releasing an LP with the same name a few months later. There was some back and forth on Twitter, but eventually Wiz and the OF spitter were able to work it out when they randomly met in a Santa Monica, California, studio. “I knew he was gonna bring up the Rolling Papers thing, and it came up. It was cool — it happened a long time ago,” Domo said when he and the rest of Odd Future appeared on “RapFix Live” in March . ‘Let’s go, Most Dope versus Taylor Gang. It’s on,’ Mac Miller said on ‘RapFix Live,’ hyping up the backstage competition between him and Wiz. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Mac Miller and Wiz Khalifa on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News When Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller hit the road together this summer, the good times will roll no doubt. But who will have more fun: the fans or the headliners? During their nine-city Under the Influence of Music run , the Pittsburgh boys are planning plenty of backstage fun. “Your little crew better get your little selves together, ’cause T.G.O.D. is coming,” Wiz told Mac, playfully threatening his labelmate when they both appeared on “RapFix Live” on April 25. “Let’s go, Most Dope versus Taylor Gang. It’s on,” Mac responded all smiles, pumping up his rap crew. Wiz and company get plenty competitive on the road. Fans got a taste of the fun in Khalifa’s second “Taylor Gang” video , which he released in September. The Bill Paladino-directed clip is composed of concert footage from Wiz’s 2011 Rolling Papers Tour. In addition to onstage shots, there are plenty of clips of team T.G.O.D. playing pranks and shooting Super Soaker water guns. “We play basketball, water fights, we ride bikes,” Wiz said of the Taylors’ backstage antics. “We’re gonna climb mountains on bikes.” Last year, Wiz and Mac went out on the Green Carpet Tour , but their respective careers have grown exponentially since then and anticipation for their latest run is building. Mac is particularly excited. “We should do team building. Can we do safety falls?” he asked Wiz with a child-like glee. “Absolutely not,” Wiz barked, keeping up the faux-feud they cooked up for the “RapFix” episode. “We’re gonna play board games, we’re gonna have mind fights to see who’s mind is stronger.” Who do you think is the stronger crew Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang or Mac Miller’s Most Dope?
