Wiz Khalifa Going ‘Hollywood’ For Next Album
‘Wiz is a positive dude,’ SGP tells Mixtape Daily, denying any beef in wake of his Taylor Gang dis track. By Rob Markman SpaceGhostPurrp Photo: Behind the Beats: SpaceGhostPurrp SpaceGhostPurrp may currently be at odds with A$AP Rocky, but the Miami rapper/producer doesn’t exactly come off as a troublemaker. Many thought that SpaceGhost and Wiz Khalifa had a problem after Purrp released a track called “F— Taylor Gang,” but together they proved a little conversation can go a long way. “Me and Wiz, we definitely cool, and the song that I made last year about the Taylor Gang thing, it was basically about me saying F the neighborhood,” SGP told Mixtape Daily during a May interview. Khalifa’s reach is wide, and his passionate Taylor Gang fanbase doesn’t just reside in Wiz’s native Pittsburgh. “It’s a neighborhood where there were a bunch of kids reppin’ Taylor Gang and they were disrespecting my Raider Klan, so we had a feud back then, so I made that towards them,” SpaceGhost said of the dis track that he aimed at the unaffiliated Taylors. After hearing A$AP Rocky’s “Pretty Flacko,” a track that Purrp produced, Wiz reached out to the rising rap talent. “I love that beat. I’m like, ‘Man, that beat is hard as hell,’ ” Wiz said when he appeared on “RapFix Live” back in April. “After that he sent me that crazy beat, and me and Juicy [J] went in.” The two were quickly able to hash out any misunderstandings and get to work. The beat that SpaceGhost sent would eventually become “T.A.P.,” one of Khalifa’s favorite songs from his Taylor Allderdice mixtape . “Wiz is a positive dude — the Taylors that was down in Miami, they were ruthless,” Purrp said. “I just wanted him to know that song wasn’t directed to him; it was for the negative people who support his movement in my neighborhood.” Purrp is looking to keep the positive vibes rolling. He recently released his independent debut album, Mysterious Phonk: The Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp, a collection of his best mixtape tracks over the past year. But who will have more fun: the fans or the headliners? During their nine-city Under the Influence of Music run , the Pittsburgh boys are planning plenty of backstage fun. “Your little crew better get your little selves together, ’cause T.G.O.D. is coming,” Wiz told Mac, playfully threatening his labelmate when they both appeared on “RapFix Live” on April 25. “Let’s go, Most Dope versus Taylor Gang. It’s on,” Mac responded all smiles, pumping up his rap crew. Wiz and company get plenty competitive on the road. Fans got a taste of the fun in Khalifa’s second “Taylor Gang” video , which he released in September. The Bill Paladino-directed clip is composed of concert footage from Wiz’s 2011 Rolling Papers Tour. In addition to onstage shots, there are plenty of clips of team T.G.O.D. playing pranks and shooting Super Soaker water guns. “We play basketball, water fights, we ride bikes,” Wiz said of the Taylors’ backstage antics. “We’re gonna climb mountains on bikes.” Last year, Wiz and Mac went out on the Green Carpet Tour , but their respective careers have grown exponentially since then and anticipation for their latest run is building. Mac is particularly excited. “We should do team building. The heralded underground star was named MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC in 2010 and put out one of that year’s best mixtapes in Kush and Orange Juice. But with his hometown anthem “Black and Yellow,” the Pittsburgh star has broken through to the mainstream. And what better way to be welcomed to the pros than by Snoop Dogg? The veteran rapper joined Wiz for the “Black and Yellow” remix , which the MCs dubbed the “G-mix” (short for gangster remix). “It’s the G-mix so we keeping it G: simple shots, performance shots, me and my guys,” Wiz told MTV News when we visited the set of the video, which also features T-Pain and Three 6 Mafia’s Juicy J. “The remix is crazy, so the video is gonna be crazy as well.” The visual was shot last month in Los Angeles by Bill Paladino and is simple but effective: The upstart looks right at home between the Grammy (Snoop) and Oscar (Juicy) winners. “It’s awesome because I know that they have all been in a room with each other and they’ve interacted before, but it’s my first time with all of them and I feel like we’re friends,” Wiz said of the clip, which hit the Web yesterday. Recently, Wiz and Snoop reconnected on a new track titled “That Good,” which arrived earlier this week and will be the pair’s first single from their upcoming movie project, “High School,” and its soundtrack, due later this year.
