House Approves Landmark Bill to Extend Health Care to Millions

WASHINGTON — Congress gave final approval on Sunday to legislation that would provide medical coverage to tens of millions of uninsured Americans and remake the nation’s health care system along the lines proposed by President Obama. By a vote of 219 to 212, the House passed the bill after a day of tumultuous debate that echoed the epic struggle of the last year. The action sent the bill to President Obama, whose crusade for such legislation has been a hallmark of his presidency. Democrats hailed the vote as historic, comparable to the establishment of Medicare and Social Security and a long overdue step forward in social justice. “This is the civil rights act of the 21st century,” said Representative James E. Clyburn of South Carolina, the No. 3 Democrat in the House. After a year of partisan combat and weeks of legislative brinksmanship, House Democrats and the White House clinched their victory only hours before the voting started on Sunday. They agreed to a deal with opponents of abortion rights within their party to reiterate in an executive order that federal money provided by the bill could not be used for abortions, giving the Democrats the final votes. Democrats said that in expanding access to health coverage for uninsured Americans, they were creating a new program every bit as important as Social Security and Medicare, while also putting downward pressure on rising health care costs and reining in federal budget deficits. Republicans said the plan would saddle the nation with unaffordable levels of debt, leave states with expensive new obligations, weaken Medicare and give the government a huge new role in the health care system. The debate on the legislation has highlighted the deep partisan and ideological divides in the nation and set up a bitter midterm Congressional election campaign, with Republicans promising an effort to repeal it or block its provisions in the states. Representative Marcy Kaptur, Democrat of Ohio, said the bill heralded “a new day in America.” Representative Doris Matsui, Democrat of California, said it would “improve the quality of life for millions of American families.” http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/22/health/policy/22health.html?hp added by: current89

Spencer Pratt Still Signed On For ‘The Hills’ Season Six

Though he says he’s taking a break to fight cyber crime, MTV says Pratt is still on the show. By Jocelyn Vena Spencer Pratt Photo: Jason Mitchell/ Getty Images “Hills” fans may have been surprised to learn last week that Spencer Pratt would no longer be managing Heidi Montag’s career, but they were probably more blown away on Monday, when Pratt told People.com that he’d be leaving the reality show behind in order to pursue a career in fighting cyber crime. But though a rep for Pratt confirms that he gave those quotes to the magazine, an MTV spokesperson seemingly contradicted his statement. “Spencer will still be a part of ‘The Hills’ season six, which will air this spring,” the spokesperson told MTV News. “In the last few months I have discovered a new passion and new purpose to my life,” Pratt told People.com , teasing his new career path. “With this in mind, I have decided to take a break from my obligations to MTV’s ‘The Hills’ and discontinue filming any more episodes for this current season.” The 26-year-old told the magazine he is currently studying software engineering with a focus on encryption at USC so that he can work for the American Defense Enterprises in their cyber security division. “Upon learning of President Obama’s declaration that the ‘cyber threat is one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation,’ I have decided to refocus my energy and devote my full resources to helping America face this and other unprecedented challenges,” said Pratt, whom Heidi replaced with psychic Aiden Chase as her manager. “My new mission is this: To do my part in maintaining the technological superiority of the U.S. military and prevent emerging technologies from threatening our nation’s security,” he added. “With that being said, I am saddened to take this break from filming MTV’s ‘The Hills.’ At this time, however, I feel I would not be honoring my country or myself if I were to continue this endeavor when I have the opportunity and the ability to assist our nation against these prevalent threats.”

Florida vampire to run for president

Not satisfied with living in Florida, Jonathon “The Impaler” Sharkey wants to move to Washington, D.C. to become the nation's first vampire president. Sharkey, 45, spent Friday on a Greyhound bus with his new fiancee, Audrianna Foster, a 19-year-old girl from Ohio he met online. She too believes she is a vampire, or vampyre. “I haven't dated a girl older than 19 since 2006,” said the Tampa man as his 19-year-old daughter and his 2-year-old grandson met him at the Greyhound station. “It's good to be me.” “The Impaler” claims he's a direct descendent of Vlad II the Impaler, better known as Dracula. He has scheduled a Monday press conference in Tampa to announce his plans to file paperwork to run for President of the United States in 2012. He recently switched his party affiliation from Independent to Republican so he can run with the G.O.P. He ran for Governor of Minnesota in 2006 and also had short-lived bids for U.S. Senate in 2000, U.S. President in 2004, and U.S. President in 2008. http://www.wtsp.com/news/mostpop/story.aspx?storyid=127365&provider=top added by: TravG73

Spencer Pratt Quits The Hills to Fight Cyber Threats

The Hills just isn’t the same without Lauren Conrad. Take away the entertainment of Spencer Pratt and it’s pretty much worthless … which we’d better get used to. The reality TV villain says he’s leaving the show, and we think he’s serious, to take his career in a surprising new direction: To protect America from cyber threats. Seriously. People reported this . “In the last few months I discovered a new passion and new purpose to my life,” Pratt said. “With this in mind, I have decided to take a break from MTV’s The Hills .” Now studying software engineering with a focus on encryption at USC, Spencer Pratt says he’s off to work for American Defense Enterprises’ cyber security division. His first mission? Making sure all Heidi Montag pictures are secure! Our first, and hopefully not last line of defense against hackers . “Upon learning of President Obama’s declaration that the ‘cyber threat is one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation,’ I have decided to refocus my energy and devote my full resources to helping America,” he says. “My new mission is this: To do my part in maintaining the technological superiority of the U.S. military and prevent emerging technologies from threatening our nation’s security as we face this and other unprecedented challenges.” That’s … awesome actually. But this is Spencer Pratt . He can’t possibly be serious, right? Is there a reality TV crew on call to film him fighting cyber-terrorists? “I am saddened to take this break from MTV’s The Hills ,” he admits. “However I feel I would not be honoring my country if I were to continue when I have the opportunity and ability to assist our nation against these prevalent threats.” Pratt’s wife, Heidi Montag, remains on The Hills . Spencer has also been relieved of managerial duties for Heidi, who’s now using Malibu-based psychic Aiden Chase . These jerks have met their sleazy match .

President Obama launches plan to overhaul No Child Left Behind. About damn time!

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news , world news , and news about the economy I have to admit I am more than a little apprehensive with the President’s plan. I ma definitely in the camp that sees NCLB as a steaming pile of shit, and it is hard to see ANY changes to hat bill as being bad, but I wonder if what Obama is planning will really do the job of reforming education in this country. Here are some of the features in the President’s education reform blueprint. — By 2020, all students graduating from high school would need to be ready for college or a career. That’s a shift away from the current law, which calls for all students to be performing at grade level in reading and math by 2014. Okay this sounds promising. — Give more rewards — money and flexibility — to high-poverty schools that are seeing big gains in student achievement and use them as a model for other schools in low-income neighborhoods that struggle with performance. I like the idea of rewarding good teachers, and more flexibility will really help teachers to use their creativity to address teaching challenges. — Punish the lowest-performing 5 percent of schools using aggressive measures, such as having the state take over federal funding for poor students, replacing the principal and half the teaching staff or closing the school altogether. No.

Westboro Church Protests Head To Supreme Court

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court is getting involved in the legal fight over the anti-gay protesters who show up at military funerals with inflammatory messages like “Thank God for dead soldiers.” The court agreed Monday to consider whether the protesters' message, no matter how provocative and upsetting, is protected by the First Amendment. Members of a Kansas-based church have picketed military funerals to spread their belief that U.S. deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq are punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality. The justices will hear an appeal from the father of a Marine killed in Iraq to reinstate a $5 million verdict against the protesters, after they picketed outside his son's funeral in Maryland. A jury in Baltimore awarded Albert Snyder damages for emotional distress and invasion of privacy, but a federal appeals court threw out the verdict. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the signs contained “imaginative and hyperbolic rhetoric” protected by the First Amendment. The funeral for Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder in Westminster, Md., was among many that have been picketed by members of the fundamentalist Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas. Westboro pastor Fred Phelps and other members have used the funeral protests to spread their belief that U.S. deaths in the Iraq war are punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality. One of the signs at Snyder's funeral combined the U.S. Marine Corps motto with a slur against gay men. Other signs carred by members of the Topeka, Kan.-based church said, “America is Doomed,” “God Hates the USA/Thank God for 9/11,” “Priests Rape Boys” and “Thank God for IEDs,” a reference to the roadside bombs that have killed many U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The case will be argued in the fall. The case is Snyder v. Phelps, 09-751. added by: emarston
