Bill Cosby Doesn’t Deserve Your Sadness

See the rest here:

Source: MARK MAKELA / Getty T ake a minute to absorb that truth for a minute: Bill Cosby doesn’t deserve your sadness. It’s a bit jarring, admittedly, to see that Bill Cosby is actually going to spend time behind bars. There are a few reasons for the surrealism of it all. First, the obvious: Bill Cosby was one of America’s most beloved figures for decades. We grew up with him and seeing him go to jail is something we never thought we’d see when we were kids. Second, there’s the fact that these allegations of sexual assault have followed Cosby for so long that it seemed like he’d never actually go to jail. It’s that second point that you need to remember. Because no matter your affinity for Cosby and his cultural contributions over the decades, he is still a man who has been accused of dozens of instances of sexual assault and, as of today, is a convicted sex offender headed to prison. So, as disorienting as it is to see Cosby in handcuffs, just remember that his confirmed and alleged victims say they have experienced worse. Save your compassion for those women. From Bill Cosby to Harvey Weinstein. https://t.co/KIfMdREA8V — NewsOne (@newsone) September 24, 2018 Don’t get me wrong: this whole situation is a tragedy. It’s a tragedy for sexual assault survivors who had to wear their pain in secret, sure that no matter what they said, the man who assaulted them would never face any punishment. It’s a tragedy for the women whose lives and careers were ruined because of the damage — physical, emotional, professional and otherwise — Cosby caused them. It’s a tragedy for a society that allows a culture in which someone like Cosby is able to thrive while having committed the crimes he’s been convicted of today. Yes, this is a tragedy. But not for Cosby. There’s another reason not to feel any sadness for Cosby: He wouldn’t feel any for you if you were on the wrong end of handcuffs like he was today, no matter the reason you were in cuffs in the first place. Bill Cosby has spent most of the 21st century chastising the most vulnerable Black Americans among us. His infamous 2004 “ Pound Cake speech ” for the NAACP  — full of false information and fake news about things like unemployment, dropout rates, incarceration rates and single parenthood — was the rallying cry for respectability politics. Cosby loved picking on poor Black people for the way they made him look in front of white people. His chiding of Black Americans, demanding that they pull their pants up, became inextricably linked to his legacy. And now, the same man who wagged his finger at incarcerated people will now spend his next few years surrounded by them. Meet the Black prosecutor who made sure time was up on #BillCosby : https://t.co/pgaIHd4ES7 pic.twitter.com/GifaPWOR9k — NewsOne (@newsone) April 30, 2018 It’s important to remember that Cosby never sagged his pants. He never said the “N” word. He came from a two-parent household. He’s well-educated. And he’s a jailed sexual assaulter. I’d like to think that we can learn lessons from all of this. That this is the final nail in the coffin for respectability politics. That those cell doors closing in front of Cosby also signal the closure of ideas that involve Black people needing to dress a certain way to avoid jail or that “Black on Black” crime is a reflection of anything more than proximity. That the era of “pull your pants up” pseudo-activism is replaced by a culture of compassion where we try to empathize for those in jail or unfortunate life situations because we understand the larger factors that put those people in those positions. The ideas that Cosby have championed should go away with him. I also hope that we learn that this wasn’t a victory for victims of sexual assault; that needing dozens of accusations of sexual assault and two trials before sending a man in his 80s to jail decades after he’s allegedly committed the acts isn’t a blueprint for true justice. Victory isn’t eventual jail for sexual assault. Victory is a society that doesn’t allow people to feel like they can commit acts of sexual violence without recourse in the first place. Victory isn’t jail. Victory is sexual assault not happening in the first place. So pardon me if I don’t feel any sadness for Bill Cosby. Excuse me if I don’t have any remorse for the perpetrator of heinous crimes. Bill Cosby doesn’t deserve your tears. He never will. Bill Cosby Sentenced To 3 To 10 Years In State Prison

Original post:

Source: Dennis Van Tine/Future Image/WENN.com / WENN Bill Cosby  learned his fate today as his sentencing for aggravated indecent assault from a 2004 case went to trial in Pennsylvania. The 81-year-old actor and comedian is set to serve 3 to 10 years behind bars. Sign Up For Our Newsletter! Close Thank you for subscribing! Email Submit The sentencing took place in Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. Cosby was found guilty in April during a re-trial that centered on claims from  Andrea Constand   stemming from an incident in 2004. “Bill Cosby took my beautiful, healthy, young spirit & crushed it,” Constand told the court Tuesday morning during her victim impact statement before Cosby was sentenced. “He robbed me of my health & vitality, my open nature, and my trust in myself & others.” Bill Cosby sentenced to 3 to 10 years in state prison. — Montgomery County DA (@MontcopaDA) September 25, 2018 The court also determined that Cosby would be labeled as a sexually violent predator, a point of contention that defense attorneys were arguing against. SEE ALSO:  Bill Cosby Has Fired All His Lawyers The prosecutor in the case was pushing for Cosby to serve 10 years in prison, but the judge hinted on Monday that the sentence may be closer to three years. Cosby’s legal team was asking for the comedian to be remanded to his home instead of a correctional facility. Prior to the sentencing, Cosby had the opportunity to take the stand and ask the judge for leniency and express remorse, but he chose not to. Cosby’s fall from grace has been especially notable because he built his career on a clean, family-friendly image that was shredded when he was indicted and ultimately arrested on Constand’s accusation that had gone all but ignored until Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele won his election in 2015 and vowed to finish the job  he said his predecessor should have started. Allegations of the TV star having spent decades drugging and sexually assaulting women were initially suppressed before the claims grew louder and more abundant, ultimately reaching as many as 60 women accusing him. SEE ALSO:  Is Camille Cosby Prepping To Divorce Bill Cosby? Cosby’s first trial resulted in a mistrial, but a retrial was granted based on the court’s admission of a previously sealed deposition during which Cosby admitted giving quaaludes to women, likening the action to how someone would offer a guest “a drink.” This week’s sentencing hearing began with the expectations that Cosby would indeed be sentenced, but defense attorneys tried a last-ditch effort to stall the proceedings on Monday. According to Deadline , Cosby’s “lawyers today made a last-ditch sleight-of-hand that could knock the two-day sentencing hearing off the rails right after it started and keep him from potentially going behind bars this week.” Accusers had an opportunity to speak directly to Cosby and the court during the two-day sentencing hearing, including former supermodel Janice Dickinson. SEE ALSO:  Bill Cosby’s Sexual Assault Case Timeline The comedian’s wife filed an ethics complaint with the state judicial board last week claiming Judge Steven O’Neill was biased, but the accusation was never really expected to affect the sentencing. Disney Slammed Because Of Its ‘Eurocentric’ Version Of Princess Tiana

P rincess Tiana first made her appearance on film in 2009’s “The Princess and The Frog.” The animated character is back on screen for “Wreck It Ralph 2” and she looks distinctly different. Some have said Disney’s first Black princess looks white, which has caused backlash against the media giant. SEE ALSO: Texas Cop Shoots Unarmed Black Man For Entering His Own Truck C olor of Change slammed Disney in a petition  which read , “Princess Tiana looks nothing like her original character. She is shown here with Eurocentric features; a slimmer nose, loose curly hair and a significantly lighter skin tone than her previous depictions. This is unacceptable. Yet again, Disney made the choice to whitewash an image that represents us. They’ve totally removed and replaced Princess Tiana’s full lips, dark skin and kinky hair. By doing so, they are showing us that they don’t care about reflecting the diversity of the Black community. ” There was also tons of backlash on social media, see below: Princess Tiana is beautifully dark-skinned and she ain't Princess Tiana if she looks like somebody else. — Monecque Patterson (@momoflower34) September 20, 2018 Disney really tried to give us a light skinned, slim nosed Princess Tiana with 3A hair and all Black Twitter said was “I THINK THE FUCK NOT”. Now they’re reanimating her to bring her dark skin back and fixing her features. pic.twitter.com/GaSuKhgZzq — E-Money (@imanimlewis) September 21, 2018 I just got mad all over again that princess Tiana was a frog the whole damn movie — café con leche (@Cuff_this) September 22, 2018 And plus you ruled this as unimportant when it isn’t . White washing isn’t cool. There are a lot of black girls that look up to princess Tiana them changing here to look mixed was just wrong. Especially when black women/ girls have a lack of representative in the media. — (@dalu_xo) September 22, 2018 However, now Disney has announced they will redraw Princess Tiana. Color of Change reports, “The creation of Princess Tiana, Disney first Black princess marked a defining moment for how Black women and girls are presented in media, specifically in animated movies. After conversations with  Walt Disney Animation Studios , we’re glad they have committed to restoring Tiana to her original form for ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ to ensure authenticity.” See below: Although this might be a small win for some, it is hard to deny the power of representation for many Black and brown children. This is a perfect example of social media getting it right. 3 Ways To Use Coconut Oil For Your Hair

Original post:

Source: Flavia Morlachetti / Getty Stretching far beyond the kitchen, coconut oil has become a popular beauty solution in its smooth transition out of drinks, dinners, desserts and into hair. Sign Up For Our Newsletter! Close Thank you for subscribing! Please be sure to open and click your first newsletter so we can confirm your subscription. Email Submit The coconut itself is more than just a tasty tropical drupe. The oil of the palm’s giant ball of yum also acts as a natural repair (or maintenance) kit to many manes. The nutrients in coconut oil help promote shine and prevent hair loss through styling. That in part is due to its vitamin E and lauric acid components that penetrate deep into the hair shaft, making hair strong and healthy. Fuller hair growth, radiance and softness can be facilitated by the use of the oil as it nourishes, moisturizes and protects the scalp and hair. Best part? Because it’s also used for cooking, you can easily find it in your local food market. Between the purchasing convenience, inexpensive cost and alluring, yet playful scent, coconut oil is a winner. Check out three ways to incorporate it into your routine hair regimen below! 1. Deep condition Deep conditioning at least once a month helps restore nutrients that slip away during heat styling, some washing and different product use. Coconut oil as a conditioner is different from your typical post-shampoo conditioner, but essentially follows the same steps. After spooning out coconut oil in a bowl and heating it up in the microwave for about 15-30 seconds (or, stick jar in bowl of warm water until melted), massage the coconut oil into your scalp. If the coconut oil is hot, wait until it’s warm to proceed. Work your way downward from your scalp, rubbing the coconut oil into your hair and all the way to your ends. Place hair in a plastic cap and let sit for about a hour to let the oil soak in. Proceed to wash your hair as normal, 2-3 times or until hair no longer feels oily. During your last wash, rinse with cool water to lock in moisture, make silky and help eliminate frizz.
