A historically Black university in Louisiana is trying to make its mark in the medical marijuana industry. Southern University and Agricultural and Medicinal College in Baton Rouge will launch a medical marijuana program after a contract with Advanced Biomedics, a Louisiana-based company specializing in pharmaceutical-grade marijuana products, was approved on Friday (May 25). The move will make the HBCU the first to start a program about legalized cannabis, WAFB , a Baton Rouge news source, reported. “This is a momentous event,” Bobby R. Phills , chancellor of the Southern University Agricultural Center and dean of the school’s College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences, said in a news release. “We are extremely excited to be able to provide quality medicine for the citizens of Louisiana.” Southern University Set to Launch First Medical Marijuana Program https://t.co/WjugGk6MPZ — HBCU Buzz (@HBCUBuzz) May 31, 2018 Southen University has joined the cannabis ranks with Louisiana State University, with both public schools set to cultivate and research marijuana in campus facilities, Mic reported. No other institutions have been designated as legal growers and researchers of medical cannabis in the state, which legalized the substance in 2016 but prohibited recreational use. Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center, which focuses on livestock, farming research and community education, will oversee the program, according to the report. Advanced Biomedics is set to automatically renew its contract with the school for two consecutive five-year periods. The university is set to make a sizeable amount from the marijuana facilities, Phillis added. The Agricultural Research Center will receive $6 million, and Southern will get a $1 million signing bonus with each contract renewal. “This groundbreaking research opportunity will also provide revenue for the University and economic development in North Baton Rouge,” the chancellor said. Southern University’s product will be ready for distribution at Louisiana dispensaries in early 2019. T he number of police shootings has reached 412 so far in 2018, according to data published this month on The Washington Post police shootings database. More shootings have happened this year between January and May than the same time last year, according to the Post’s report. Approximately 400 shootings had taken place between that five-month period in 2017. Eighty-five African Americans have died at the hands of police so far this year, said The Post, which has been keeping a record of every fatal shooting in the U.S. by a police officer in the line of duty since January 1, 2015. Eighty-two men and three women have been reported killed. The alarming numbers have stirred more conversations about police reform and accountability. As of May 15, 2018, 396 people have been shot & killed by the police, and we aren’t even halfway through 2018. #PoliceReform #PoliceAccountability https://t.co/4i4okfT9zX pic.twitter.com/lfhdH3jbMm — ACLU of Ohio (@acluohio) May 22, 2018 The high number of police shootings also motivated several NFL players’ kneeling protest. The NFL made a cowardly move to stop players from kneeling on the field for police brutality victims this week. With the rule change, the league gave into pressure from Trump and decided to punish players who get on one knee during the National Anthem to protest the disturbing amount of nationwide police shootings. Activists have steadily spoken out against the NFL’s new anthem policy announced Wednesday (May 23). With fatal police shootings on the rise, the fight against this pattern must continue to grow. Protests have already erupted against these shootings across the nation, and more police reforms must happen to stop this trend. Racial-biased policing needs to be pursued as the nation tries to end these brutality incidents. NY Jets Chairman Offers To Pay Protest Fines While the NFL is aiming to demand that all players stand for the national anthem with “discipline” for grown-azz men in the form of strict fines…one team boss isn’t standing for it. NY Jets Chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson says his team has his support, regardless of if they choose to protest the anthem. According to NYPost , Johnson has said that the team will stand behind players who may choose to kneel , and will not issue any team fines. As he said in a statement: “I plan to sit in the very near term with Coach (Todd) Bowles and our players to discuss today’s decision regarding the National Anthem,” Johnson said in a statement. As I have in the past, I will support our players wherever we land as a team. Our focus is not on imposing any Club rules, fines, or restrictions. Instead we will continue to work closely with our players to constructively advance social justice issues that are important to us. I remain extremely proud of how we demonstrated unity last season as well as our players’ commitment to strengthening our communities.” And as he told Newsday , if the league imposes the fine themselves, the team will eat it. “I do not like imposing any club-specific rules. If somebody (on the Jets) takes a knee, that fine will be borne by the organization, by me, not the players. I never want to put restrictions on the speech of our players. Do I prefer they stand? Of course. But I understand if they feel the need to protest. There are some big, complicated issues that we’re all struggling with, and our players are on the front lines. I don’t want to come down on them like a ton of bricks, and I won’t. There will be no club fines or suspensions or any sort of repercussions. If the team gets fined, that’s just something I’ll have to bear.” Nice. How many teams do you think will follow suit? Getty

Source: Michael Zagaris / Getty A new national anthem policy was approved by the NFL on Wednesday that’s definitely putting “freedom of speech” up for question. According to the policy , individual teams will have the power to set their own rules when it comes to standing for the national anthem. However, if players decide not to stand, the team as a whole is subject to fines from the NFL. Players will be allowed to remain in the locker room if they don’t want to stand or if they don’t want to come out for the anthem in general. “This season, all league and team personnel shall stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell wrote in a statement. “Personnel who choose not to stand for the Anthem may stay in the locker room until after the Anthem has been performed.” Despite players’ option to stay in the locker room, isn’t this another form of censorship? The whole point of protesting is to be visual. Athletes kneeling came about to protest unjust issues such as police brutality. If we can’t see which players are physically kneeling, the power of freedom of speech is overshadowed by patriotic gestures. You mad Black people are getting killed by the police? That’s fine, still stand for this flag. You want racial profiling to go away? That’s fine, still stand for this flag. Mere lyrics and gestures — that weren’t really meant for Black people in the first place — become more important than issues that impact American lives. The NFL Commissioner continued, “We believe today’s decision will keep our focus on the game and the extraordinary athletes who play it—and on our fans who enjoy it.” In other words, shut up and play football Black people! Individual teams shouldn’t be trusted to make national anthem rules either. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones already said last season that he would bench any Cowboys player who didn’t stand for the anthem. Houston Texans owner Robert McNair also said that the NFL fields aren’t meant for “political statements.” How will people like this carry out their “rules” if a player decides to stay in the locker room during the national anthem? The new policies are set to go into effect this upcoming season. So it seems once again, patriotism will shine in the light, while human issues — especially Black issues — will remain in the locker room.
