Southern California beach erosion is worst in a decade

Powerful winter storms sweep away a spectacular amount of sand, leaving a rugged landscape of rock and cliff-side staircases that drop off into the air. Jeremy and Fernando Gutierrez descended a staircase to a cove in Laguna Beach for a nighttime lobster dive and almost fell into the ocean. Even in the darkness, the brothers could see what the problem was — the sand at Treasure Island Beach had all but disappeared, leaving a rugged landscape of rock and a sudden drop-off where the staircase once led gently to the strand. “I couldn't believe it,” said Fernando Gutierrez, 26, of Costa Mesa. “There was no beach and a 20-foot drop-off.” It's a similar scene at dozens of other Southern California beaches where powerful winter storms have swept away a spectacular amount of sand. The vanishing beaches have forced city crews in Dana Point to remove fire rings, picnic tables and shower pads so lifeguards have room to patrol the remaining sand. At Laguna's Rockpile Beach, the waves scrubbed the shore so heavily that jagged rocks and rusty remnants of an old sewer system that haven't been seen for years reemerged. “This year it was just plain rock pile,” said Ken Frank, city manager of Laguna Beach. “Forget the beach.” And at Dockweiler Beach near Los Angeles International Airport, cobblestones are visible where there once was soft sand, and workers have been using heavy machinery to fill in some of the more perilous drop-offs. “We lost half a dozen palm trees that were planted in the 1980s” after the sand holding their roots washed away, said Rich Haydon, the state Department of Parks and Recreation superintendent for Doheny, San Clemente and San Onofre state beaches. “The amount of sand taken away from Doheny is going to take many, many years to replenish, if it does replenish at all.” The storms' scouring of the Southern California shoreline — remarkable at some beaches, barely noticeable at others — has caused the worst damage and most significant beach erosion in at least a decade, according to parks and beach officials. In January and February, powerful swells, high tides and strong winds swept away tons of sand from the coastline, stealing as much as 30 to 40 feet of beachfront at some locations. In the month or two since the El Ni

Ricky Martin is Gay

“I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.” —– Ricky Martin He branded himself as the “fortunate gay”, Ricky martin decided to finally end the years of speculations about his sexuality. The Puerto Rican singer finalized his decision when his two sons are born, they are Matteo and Valentino Martin, born via surrogate in August 2008. From Ricky Martin’s Website he said that: “Many people told me: “Ricky it’s not important”, “it’s not worth it”, “all the years you’ve worked and everything you’ve built will collapse”, “many people in the world are not ready to accept your truth, your reality, your nature”. Because all this advice came from people who I love dearly, I decided to move on with my life not sharing with the world my entire truth.  Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage. Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions.” Ricky Martin is Gay is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading

Ricky Martin Comes Out as "Fortunate Homosexual"

Ricky Martin, who has dodged questions of his sexuality for years now, officially revealed that he is a gay man in a statement on his website earlier today. The Puerto Rican singer,, who is planning to write a memoir about his life, says the birth of his twin sons (via surrogate) led to his decision to come out. Ricky’s kids were born in August 2008, and similar to Clay Aiken, he says he did not want to live a lie while raising a child … in Ricky’s case two of them. His coming out statement is well-written and at times poignant. You have to respect the honesty and emotion behind it, along with Martin’s reasoning … “A few months ago I decided to write my memoirs, a project I knew was going to bring me closer to an amazing turning point in my life. From the moment I wrote the first phrase I was sure the book was the tool that was going to help me free myself from things I was carrying within me for a long time. Things that were too heavy for me to keep inside. Writing this account of my life, I got very close to my truth. And this is something worth celebrating. For many years, there has been only one place where I am in touch with my emotions fearlessly and that’s the stage. Being on stage fills my soul in many ways, almost completely. It’s my vice.

Busy Phillips Flashes Her Ass on the Beach of the Day

Busy Phillips is the Godmother of Heath Ledger’s baby and my new best friend Jake Gyllenhaal is the Godfather, so I feel like I know this bitch, but really I’ve never heard of her, because she’s ugly and I tend to ignore ugly chicks, unless they are on the beach, flashing their asses…. This is one of those “Thank God for Nature” moments, because the wind is doing is part to help my pervert ass out. Seriously, I love when nature helps turn me on, whether it’s with freak rainstorms on summer days when unsuspecting girls are wearing white shirts making sitting in the park a hell of a lot more fun or when the wind pulls this shit off and blows skirts up for everyone to see everything….and when you spend a good part of your day on the street, you’ll realize just how often this shit happens, it’s just hard to snap pictures of the shit, making this probably Busy Phillips best work… Pics via PacificCoastNews

Jessica Simpson’s Career (And Personal) Timeline

From innocent pop princess to VH1 reality host, we look back at Simpson’s ups and downs. By Jocelyn Vena Jessica Simpson Photo: Rick Diamond/Getty Images A lot has happened to Jessica Simpson since she bounced on the scene with her 1999 debut album Sweet Kisses. While recording music, starring in movies and designing her own brand of clothing, Simpson has also been the constant subject of tabloid rumors and public debate over her image. And before we watch her return to reality TV on Monday night (March 15) with her show, “The Price of Beauty,” on VH1, MTV News decided to take a look back at the highs and lows of her career and personal life so far. November 23, 1999 : Simpson released her debut album, Sweet Kisses . Branded as a cleaner-cut pop star than cotemporaries Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears, the 19-year-old didn’t roll around in the sand or get her Lolita on in schoolgirl uniforms. Simpson became the pop-star-next-door thanks to her ballad, “I Wanna Love You Forever,” followed by her duet with Nick Lachey “Where Are You.” The Evolution Of: Jessica Simpson 1999 : She began dating Lachey after touring with his band, 98 Degrees. At the same time, Simpson finally sexed up her image for her album In This Skin, which featured a more grown-up sound than her previous efforts. She had hits with singles “With You” and “Take My Breath Away.” March 30, 2005 : Simpson and Lachey wrapped up their show. August 5, 2005 : She put on her short shorts to play the role of Daisy Duke in the big-screen adaptation of “Dukes of Hazzard,” alongside Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott. February 3, 2009 : Simpson continued acting with the straight-to-DVD release of “Private Valentine: Blonde & Dangerous.” August 26, 2006 : Simpson released her album A Public Affair, and projected a fun, carefree attitude in the Brett Ratner-directed video for the single of the same name, featuring her roller-skating with her girlfriends. The Ides of March

Ah, Rome. The creators of “the road.” In honor of the great Roman murder of Caesar on this day, I thought it would be a good idea to discuss this great Roman invention…and how I think we should get rid of it. Okay, so that might be a little controversial, but look at it this way, it has been two thousand years since Rome was in power, surely we’ve got the great minds to move us to the next step of our transit evolution by now? What’s wrong with roads? Other than the pollution of cars, the resources and money needed to build and maintain them, and the continuation of the dependence on foreign oil that they support, plenty. The biggest problem is that they (and the suburbs and cul-de-sacs that come with them) are spreading like a cancer across our country. They take up too much space and interfere with ecosystems too much. It has to stop. They begin to cover everything. So how do we fix it? The goal is to get from point A to point B faster. Without the advent of teleportation (Come on, science, it’s 2010 already!) we are stuck with physically moving our bodies. Currently, the popular method of doing this is driving there. Where is there? Across the vast urban sprawl that is etching its way into the surface of America. So how can we get rid of roads? We condense cities. Portland, Oregon is the first city to go to battle for the restriction on building suburbs. The goal is to save the nature areas that draw people to Oregon in the first place from the builders and roads and strip malls and billboards. However, Portland’s plan has not been comprehensive or effective. The side effect has been to cause growth in the city to slow and to raise the prices of property within the city. Vancouver, BC has been battling sprawl and housing costs as well. Although they keep making provisions that momentarily keep housing prices in check, such as changing laws so that builders may now use all available space, including rooftops and alleyways, to build compact housing, and focusing on building one of the best public transit systems in the world. But with an estimated 2 million new people moving to the city in the next ten years, housing will be inadequate and the pressure to spread out will be on again. Are there any cities that are effectively dealing with this problem? Cities must be condensed, roads reduced, and cars eliminated. But how can we afford to live without them and maintain our standard of living?

Billy Corgan Slams John Mayer Over Jessica Simpson Comments

‘He’s trying to destroy his career,’ Corgan says of Mayer’s Playboy comments about Simpson. By Jocelyn Vena Billy Corgan Photo: Jason Merritt/ FilmMagic Billy Corgan may have admitted his love for Jessica Simpson to Rolling Stone, but it seems he’s also dishing to the magazine his distaste for John Mayer after Mayer’s controversial remarks about Simpson in Playboy magazine. “He’s trying to destroy his career,” Corgan told Rolling Stone . “Rather than take a year off or change his musical direction … some part of it is irritating his soul to the point where he’s trying to blow it up.” Corgan further said of his fellow musician, “Certainly a talented guy, but empathetically, standing on the sidelines, it’s hard to watch someone literally burn their career to the ground. Speaking as somebody who’s done it.” In the same interview, the Smashing Pumpkins founder revealed that he’s got feelings for Simpson. The two recently collaborated on the theme song for Simpson’s new VH1 reality show, “The Price of Beauty.” “If I go, ‘Oh, we’re just friends,’ then it’s like, ‘Did they go out, did he dump her or she dump him, what happened?’ It has nothing to do with any of that. Sometimes people just like being around each other, and good things come out of that,” he told the magazine about the nature of his relationship with Simpson. “My goal in life is to love whoever I think is worth loving, and I think if people knew her like I knew her, they would love her like I do. It’s really simple.” Simpson seems to be taking this all in stride. She laughed off Mayer’s comments when she appeared on “Late Night With David Letterman on Wednesday night. After Lil Wayne’s Sentencing, What’s Next?

Rapper will now be booked and processed before ending up at Rikers Island. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: Alexander Tamargo/Getty Images Now that Lil Wayne has surrendered to the court , he’ll be booked through the New York City court system and processed by the Department of Correction. The action could take hours, with Wayne not likely to see his cell and new bed until late in the evening, according to retired corrections officer Charles Reid, who spoke to MTV News about the process. Reid first spoke with MTV News last month about safety issues surrounding the multiplatinum MC . Reid characterized the booking and processing order as a tedious journey from standing before the judge until inmates arrive at their bunks. First, Lil Wayne’s case will be closed by the court and the rapper will be booked as a guilty party and fingerprinted. From there, paperwork will be drawn up and the Cash Money lyricist will be transferred from the court’s custody to the Department of Correction, which also has offices in the New York Criminal Court building. Once Wayne is transferred over to the DOC, he’ll be assigned a sentence number unique to each inmate. That number will include “anything you need to know about him,” Reid explained. Data about why the rapper was sentenced, his location and a list of his history will be detailed in his sentence number. From there, the rapper may be kept in Manhattan at the Tombs, otherwise known as the Manhattan Detention Complex. Depending on how long his processing takes and how busy officers are with transportation, the rapper could be held in the city. More than likely, though, Reid said, Lil Wayne’s ordeal will be completed in one day, spread out over many hours. By the time the New Orleans native arrives to Rikers Island, he’ll have to turn over his personal items to be held on location until his sentence is completed. Corrections officers will then strip search Lil Wayne, order him to shower, and then provide the rapper with his prison attire. As Reid pointed out before, Lil Wayne will not have to cut his trademark dreadlocks. “The days of doing that are over,” he said. “They can’t make inmates do that anymore — it’s within their rights to maintain any kind of hairstyle.” After that, Lil Wayne will be escorted to his cell where he’ll begin his prison stint; he pleaded guilty to an attempted-gun-possession charge, which will put him behind bars for eight months to a year. A prison guard who spoke to MTV News late last month described what the rapper’s new setting would look like. According to the guard, who spoke to us anonymously because of the nature of the information, Lil Wayne will likely have his own 10-by-15-foot cell with a toilet, sink, bed and one window. The view, according to the guard, however, won’t be much. “He’ll be able to see another wall [outside the window],” the guard said. Billy Corgan Discusses His ‘Love’ For Jessica Simpson, Smashing Pumpkins Breakup

‘I think if people knew her like I knew her, they would love her like I do,’ Corgan tells Rolling Stone. By Jocelyn Vena Billy Corgan (file) Photo: MTV News While Billy Corgan was mum about his relationship with pop star Jessica Simpson when he spoke to The Chicago Tribune last month, the Smashing Pumpkins frontman was a bit more forthcoming to Rolling Stone about the nature of his relationship with the singer, who recently appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and ex-boyfriend’s discussed John Mayer’s controversial comments about her in Playboy. “If I go, ‘Oh, we’re just friends,’ then it’s like, ‘Did they go out, did he dump her or she dump him, what happened?’ It has nothing to do with any of that. Sometimes people just like being around each other, and good things come out of that,” he told the magazine. “My goal in life is to love whoever I think is worth loving, and I think if people knew her like I knew her, they would love her like I do. It’s really simple.” He had harsher words for his former bandmates in the Smashing Pumpkins. “Rather than break up the band, what I should have done is chuck James [Iha] out,” Corgan explained. “I should have just said to Jimmy [Chamberlin], ‘You go to rehab, and we’ll continue, and James, get the f— out of here.’ Instead, I fell on my sword for James, for what I thought was a friend.” He also opened up about his career now and his ongoing work on the Pumpkins’ Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, a planned 44-track collection he’s gradually releasing over the course of three years via free download from his Web site. “There’s a lot of days where you feel forgotten,” he said. “Do I belong in the conversation about the best artists in the world? My answer is yes, I do. I’ve been too productive for too long, and despite what anybody wants to strip away from me, I am influential. I am. So all the Pitchforks in the world [referring to the popular indie-rock Web site] can try to strip me of every ounce of dignity, but I belong.” Related Artists Billy Corgan Jessica Simpson The Smashing Pumpkins
