For The Ladies: The NBA Has Licensed A Line Of “High-End” Stilettos For Those You That Want To Be A Fan AND Be Fly (At The Same Damn Time) [Pics]

Finally ladies have some official fan gear that isn’t pink! NBA Licenses Custom-Made High Heels For Women The men of the NBA have never shied away from making fashion statements. There have been Daisy Duke-style shorts, shants (the baggy hybrid of shorts and pants), Pat Riley Armani suits, Air Jordans, Dennis Rodman tattoos, piercings, and hair dyes, and Allen Iverson sideways caps and corn rows. This season the Urkel-meets-Brooklyn-hipster costume is making headlines, best exemplified by the colorful wire framed glasses sans lenses worn by the Miami Heat’s Dwayne Wade and LeBron James, and the big boy fishy, teddy bear and umbrella-themed polo shirts worn by the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook. But the latest trend the NBA is hoping to bank on is a new offering for its female fans: high heels. Yesterday the league announced its license agreement with Orlando-based shoe designer Herstar for a line of heels that includes two designs available for all 30 teams. One is a 6-inch crystal beaded version currently retailing for $275, the other a 4-inch microsuede version retailing for $99. Yes, 6-inch and 4-inch heels. The founder and CEO of Herstar, Holly Joffrion, can explain. Frustrated when nothing came of her online search for a pair of sport high heels to wear to an Orlando Magic game she was attending with her husband, the shoe designer had the vision of making her own team-themed pair. She worked on some prototype images with various teams’ logos and then last September the 25-year old posted a few on her website to gauge fan interest. Within three days, without any marketing or promotion, while the league was on the verge of its lockout, she found she was not the only one searching for such shoes. She had over 100 requests for her prototypes. Fortunately Joffrion already had her manufacturer and distributor lined up, as she had already been in the shoe business for five years. But the next hurdle was the NBA license agreement application. Without it she was unable to make or sell the shoes. So for three months she and her husband, who has a background in finance, hustled to get the paperwork done. By the time she presented her application to the NBA in February, Herstar’s back orders were in the hundreds, still without the company engaging in any marketing or advertising, outside of Facebook and Pinterest postings. It was more than enough to make up for the lack of 3-year sales figures the league requested on the merchandise. Additionally, by that point Joffrion had been so overwhelmed by requests for something higher than the 3-inch pair she had online, that she first added the 4-inch heels to the mix and later when asked for even higher, offered the 6-inch version. (For the record, Herstar will customize to lower lengths.) Yesterday after the NBA’s press release, Herstar’s sales jumped 400 percent on daily volume; traffic for the company’s website, where the shoes are primarily sold, jumped from a typical 4,000 daily hits to 35,000 hits. In total the company has sold enough pairs of heels to cover the initial $30,000 upfront license fee the NBA required and is already profitable. Current customers include the Orlando Magic’s Dwight Howard and Daniel Orton, while the top three sales markets are the San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. This lady is about to get PAID! Vicky Picca, the NBA’s senior vice president of licensing and business affairs, said the league and more importantly its 25 million female NBA fans in the US couldn’t be happier. “Our female business has tripled over the last 5 years and what our fans were saying is that they no longer wanted a pink version of a male product,” said Picca. “This appeals to our savvy female consumer.” Ladies, would you rock a pair of these hoops heels? Peep the following pages to see some of Herstar’s designs. Images via Herstar

Homeless Miami Zombie Attack Victim Ronald Poppo Is Up And Walking, Talking And Cheering On The Heat [Graphic Photo Inside]

Wow… He lived through that??? Ronald Poppo, the man who was viciously attacked in Miami Memorial weekend is doing much better according to his doctors. Miami Zombie Attack Victim Up Walking And Talking In Hospital But it turns out that in addition to having to survive 50% of his face being chewed away, he also had to recover from a gunshot wound: As if things couldn’t have been worse for the vagrant whose face was chewed off by the horrifying “Miami Zombie,” doctors revealed Tuesday that cops accidentally shot him as they tried to save him. Ronald Poppo, 65, had two holes in his left chest when he was brought bleeding to Jackson Memorial Hospital, doctors said. They were apparently entry and exit wounds. Maniac Rudy Eugene, who was not armed, was on top of Poppo when police opened fire to stop the gruesome attack. A stray bullet hit the victim, too. Poppo is recovering surprisingly well, eating, walking and even cheering on his basketball team, doctors said, calling him “charming.” They released two graphic photos of Poppo, showing him in a hospital gown walking down a hallway with help. His nose and right eye is gone, his left eye is covered in a bandage and his forehead and cheeks are a mass of bloody wounds. The bottom half of his face, from his salt and pepper mustache on down, appears okay. “He’s coping remarkably well,” trauma surgeon Nicholas Namias told reporters. “We have mental health professionals to help him.” Doctors said he remembers the horrifying attack but has displayed a surprisingly upbeat attitude. Asked if he had a message before the news conference, doctors said Poppo replied: “Go Heat!” The Miami Heat play Oklahoma City Tuesday night in the NBA finals. Poppo, who was blinded in the attack, has undergone three surgeries so far – including skin grafts – and will need more. “First he needs to recover from the three surgeries he’s already had,” said plastic surgeon Wrood Kassira. He will remain hospitalized for “weeks at least,” Kassira added. The hospital has started a fund to collect donations for the destitute vagrant’s care. So far they’ve raised $15,000. Doctors said they won’t know whether Poppo can be a candidate for a face transplant – an experimental new procedure being funded by the Defense Department – until his wounds heal. The bizarre attack on Poppo, a harmless homeless alcoholic who started life at Manhattan’s prestigious Stuyvesant High School, captured the sympathy of the world. He was reclining under a shady overpass on Memorial Day weekend when a deranged naked wastrel named Rudy Eugene fell upon him unprovoked, beat him and chewed off more than 50% of his face. Eugene, 31, had shed all his clothes and ripped out pages from the Bible he always carried he walked along the McArthur Causeway joining the city to Miami Beach, CBS reported. Eugene was shot and killed by police when he refused to stop attacking Poppo. An autopsy found no parts of Poppo’s face in Eugene’s stomach – contradicting accounts by appalled witnesses that the attacker was swallowing the pieces of flesh he ripped away with his teeth. The autopsy did not find an explanation for Eugene’s unusual behavior, though more tests are still pending. Poppo’s family in the New York area had long believed him dead. So far, Poppo has not had any visitors, doctors said. That’s really sad that his family hasn’t come to visit him. We think the Miami Heat should head over to the hospital as soon as they have a chance, especially if they win this championship. Well, if curiosity has the best of you, you can check out the photo of what Poppo looks like now below: Source Jackson Memorial Hospital

Flaming Lips Insist Oklahoma City Thunder ‘Will Win’ NBA Championship

Wayne Coyne talks to MTV News about recording ‘Thunder Up!’ for his hometown team as they prepare to take on Heat. By James Montgomery James Montgomery and Wayne Coyne Photo: MTV News Last month, before his epic war of words with Erykah Badu and after his hometown Oklahoma City Thunder fell behind 2-0 in their Western Conference Finals matchup with the seemingly unstoppable San Antonio Spurs, Flaming Lips’ mastermind Wayne Coyne was still upbeat. And not about Badu. No, despite the (then) overwhelming odds against them, Coyne was confident that the Thunder would not only rally to defeat the Spurs, but would go on to win the NBA championship. In fact, “confident” was probably an understatement. “Of course, what do you mean ‘Can they win?’ ” he responded to MTV News when we asked about the Thunder’s chances of taking home the NBA crown. “They will win.” And we all know how things turned out. The Thunder staged a Lazarus-like comeback against the Spurs — who had been riding a 20-game winning streak — and won the series in six games. Now, it’s on to the NBA Finals, where they’ll face off against the playoff-tested Miami Heat and their trio of stars: LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Game one of the Finals tips off Tuesday night (June 12) in Oklahoma City. Can the Thunder’s epic run culminate in the NBA championship? Well, we know what Coyne thinks … and he’s not alone. He and the Lips recently re-recorded one of their signature songs — “Race for the Prize,” off 1999’s The Soft Bulletin — as an anthem for the team, a rousing version dubbed “Thunder Up! Racing for the Prize,” with the same crashing drums and keening synths of the original, but sees Coyne changing the lyrics to reflect his admiration for the squad. “Theirs is to win/ We win with them/ They’ll keep fighting for Oklahoma!” he sings, while the shouted refrain of “Thunder Up!” is repeated in the background. The whole thing ends, appropriately enough, with a booming thunderclap of electronic noise. It’s not known whether “Thunder Up!” will be played in Oklahoma City’s Chesapeake Arena during game one of the Finals, but Lips multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd has certainly been doing his part to make it happen: He’s tweeted the track to Thunder guard Russell Westbrook, encouraging him to share it with all his “OKC Thunder bros.” Like most of the city, Drozd’s wrapped up in the thrill of the NBA Finals, noting , “There’s already extra traffic and excitement in the air at OKC airport.” Related Artists The Flaming Lips

Congratulations: Bron Bron And The Miami Heat Beat Celtics And Head To NBA Finals To Face OKC Thunder

Miami Heat Defeat Boston Celtics And Moves On To NBA Finals Bron Bron trying to get some championship ring action in full effect… LeBron James finally got a Game 7 victory, on his third try. Next up, the NBA finals – and his third try at that elusive first championship. A year after watching someone else celebrate on their home floor, the Miami Heat were the ones dancing at midcourt. James had 31 points and 12 rebounds, Chris Bosh hit a career-best three 3-pointers – the last sparking the run that put it away – and the Heat won their second straight Eastern Conference title by beating the Boston Celtics 101-88 in Game 7 on Saturday night. Miami opens the title series in Oklahoma City on Tuesday night. The Heat got there by outscoring Boston 28-15 in the fourth quarter, with the “Big Three” of Dwyane Wade, Bosh and James scoring every Miami point. “We decided to come together and play together for a reason,” Wade said. Wade scored 23 points, Bosh finished with 19 and Shane Battier added 12 for the Heat, who won a Game 7 for the first time since 2004 – Wade’s rookie season. Now it’s back to the finals, where Miami fell in six games to Dallas a year ago. Boston ran out to a 23-14 lead, before the Heat settled down and tied it twice in the second quarter, the last of those at 35-all with 6:50 left. It was then that Garnett left with his third foul. Heat on a run, Garnett going to the bench, so momentum Miami, right? Not quite. Bass scored 10 points in a stretch of just over 3 minutes to spark a 14-3 run, with the Celtics scoring three times off turnovers in that stretch. Allen waltzed in unbothered for a layup with 22 seconds left in the half, and Boston took a 53-46 lead into the break. And the least surprised person in the arena was Rivers, who sensed at the morning shootaround that his team would be sharp for Game 7. They were. Just in the end, Miami was sharper. “That’s what we talk about,” said James, who lost Game 7 appearances with Cleveland in 2006 and 2008. “It has to be a collective group to win the championship. Everybody was in tune today. We wanted to give our fans a big win. We look forward to the next challenge.” What do y’all think?? Can that shady “Big 3″ bring home a ring this year?? Source

When The Checks Stop Coming In: ESPN Will Air A Documentary Called “Broke” About Andre Rison, Terrell Owens, And Other Athletes That Have Eff’ed Up Their Lives

Oh, this should be GOOD! ESPN Features Documentary “Broke” About Athletes That Have Ruined Their Lives According to BlackSportsOnline All rookies in every sport should be required to see this documentary. “Broke,” a ESPN documentary directed by Billy Corben, is a part of ESPN “30 for 30 Vol. II” which is scheduled to be released in October. The documentary “digs into the psychology of men whose competitive nature carries them to victory on the field and ruin off it.” It features retired stars like Keith McCants, Bernie Kosar, Leon Searcy and Andre Rison, as well as commentary from Marvin Miller, the former executive director of the MLB Players Association, Bart Scott of the New York Jets and many others. Below is a synopsis of the documentary. According to a 2009 Sports Illustrated article, 60 percent of NBA players are broke within five years of retirement. For 78 percent of NFL players, it takes only three years. Sucked into bad investments, stalked by freeloaders, saddled with medical problems, and naturally prone to showing off, most pro athletes get shocked by harsh economic realities after years of living the high life. Drawing surprisingly vulnerable confessions from retired stars like Jamal Mashburn, Bernie Kosar, and Andre Rison, as well as Marvin Miller, the former executive director of the MLB Players Association, this fascinating documentary digs into the psychology of men whose competitive nature carries them to victory on the field and ruin off it. With athletes like Terrell Owens claiming to be broke and former NFL running back Jamal Lewis in court today for a bankruptcy court hearing, this documentary should be a lesson for newly professional athletes on how to manage their money properly. You don’t want to be another Andre Rison, who declared bankruptcy in 2007 and was indicted by a federal grand jury last year for failure to pay child support charges. Or Keith McCants, who confessed in a 2011 interview that he wished he “never had any money.” It’s a sad state of affairs with a lot of these pro athletes, but with so many of these guys losing their money, families, even their lives, this will be must see TV.

Local News Anchor Reports That Celtics-Heat Playoff Game Ended in Tie

We’ve posted plenty of local news blunders on THG, but this woman saying that Game 4 of the NBA’s Eastern Conference finals ended in a tie is up there. On Sunday night’s news broadcast of Portland, Maine, ABC affiliate WMTW – a New England station no less! – News 8’s Meghan Torjussen failed hard. “The Boston Celtics, hosting the Miami Heat in Boston for Game 4 of the NBA Eastern Conference finals,” Torjussen said. “I guess the game just ended.” “It ended in a tie. This is what my producer is telling me right now.” News Anchor Says NBA Game Ends in Tie At that point, a graphic reading “Miami 89, Boston 89” appeared on the screen … which was the score at the time, but the game was, of course, not over. “There you go,” Torjussen said. “There’s the score, 89-89. Down to the wire, 21 seconds left, ended in a tie. … All right, moving on to professional baseball.” Hopefully she’s not moving on to a new career later this week.

Lil Wayne Feels "Unwelcome, Unwanted" By Oklahoma City Thunder After Ticket "Snub"

After the Oklahoma City Thunder denied Lil Wayne entry to Game 3 of the NBA’s Western Conference Finals the other night, the rapper was left out in the cold. And reeling emotionally. Despite the seemingly fair and straightforward reason for his denial – he had no ticket – he says he feels “unwelcome and unwanted.” The rapper said two Thunder players – Kevin Durant and James Harden – reached out to offer him tickets to last night’s Game 4, but “that’s not the point.” ‘That’s the players stepping up but of course the players aren’t white,” Weezy lamented . “I don’t want to be sitting there next to a (person) that’s like ‘I don’t want this (guy) sitting next to me.’ (Forget) you … I’m in Forbes ,” he laughed. Lil Wayne Tweeted on Thursday night that he had been ”denied by the team to be in their arena.” The team responded by saying the game was sold out. But the Grammy-winner described a more complicated scenario later. He said he typically procures tickets for such games ”from this guy named Mike” who had requested special security, parking and entrance for LW. According to Mike, whoever the heck that is, the team responded that they would only sell the courtside seats he requested for Mike’s personal use. In other words, no Lil Wayne. Allegedly. Anyone actually believe that? In any case, Lil Wayne says he feels welcome at other arenas, including Miami, and likes being able to energize players – many of whom are fans of his music. But in Oklahoma City, he said that while ”the players want me there and I respect that, I don’t want to feel – I’m going to still feel unwanted. Unwelcome.” Thunder star Kevin Durant is determined to change that, saying: ”We’d have loved to have him here in Oklahoma City. We’d have welcomed him with open arms. Hopefully, next time he can come and enjoy a game.” ”It was just a misunderstanding. We were sold out of tickets, I heard, and we didn’t come through,” Durant said. ”He knows a few of us on the team.” “We offered him tickets to tonight but he had to do something. He had something to do, but I’m sure if his schedule was free, he would have came tonight.” “We’re still inviting him to games – if not this year, next year.” The rapper says that while his manager is encouraging a boycott of the city, ”I never say never.” The door is open, Weezy. Just call a few days ahead. [Photo: WENN.com]

Exclusive: Lil Wayne’s OKC Thunder Ticket Snub Explained

Young Money’s Mack Maine tells MTV News: ‘They said they’ll give him some tickets on the front row behind, but [not] courtside.’ By Rob Markman Lil Wayne Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images All Lil Wayne wanted to do is take in an NBA playoff game with his buddies, but on Thursday night (May 31) the Oklahoma City Thunder started baller blockin’. “Was going to go to the Thunder game tonight but was denied by the team to be in their arena. Wow. Smh. Go Spurs,” Weezy tweeted just hours before tip-off. Tunechi is a noted L.A. Lakers fan, but his friend and manager Cortez Bryant is a San Antonio Spurs die-hard, so Weezy thought he’d treat his buddy to a game — that is until OKC brass spoiled his plans. It was Young Money President Mack Maine who tried to score the tickets through a broker, but securing the seats proved to be difficult. “He finally just let me know, they not really tryin’ to sell tickets to him,” Mack Maine told MTV News minutes after the playoff game ended. “They said they’ll give him some tickets on the front row behind, but they’re not really tryin’ to have him sittin’ courtside.” Then things got even weirder Mack, told us. “Then they also sent a message back sayin’ the OKC policy was no special parking and no escort, so he gotta walk in like everybody else,” he explained. “Why would you actually want to cause pandemonium? That’s gonna make it harder for your security.” Mack explained that he and Weezy were just concerned about their safety and the safety of the fans. It’s hard to imagine that the multiplatinum superstar could just slip in and out of an arena unnoticed. “We’re not no prima donnas, but that’s just common sense, for our safety and the safety of your building,” the Billionaire Minds rapper said. “We were basically just tryin’ to take our brother to the game.” Chances are Tez wouldn’t have enjoyed himself anyway, as his beloved Spurs lost to the Thunder in a blowout, 102-82. “Yeah it worked out perfect anyway,” he said.
