‘Catching Fire’: Why Hiring Francis Lawrence Makes Sense

We examine the director’s qualifications for the second installment in the ‘Hunger Games’ series. By Kevin P. Sullivan Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate On Thursday night, Lionsgate officially offered “Catching Fire” to director Francis Lawrence . The development was widely considered the next letdown in a series of disappointments for fans, who felt Gary Ross’ departure was a premature one. But based on what we know about ” Catching Fire ” and what Lionsgate was reportedly looking for in a replacement, Lawrence was by far the most likely choice. Here is why Francis Lawrence makes complete sense as the director for “Catching Fire”: He Can Do Action One of the major complaints about Ross’ direction of ” The Hunger Games ” was that he lacked experience shooting action sequences and it showed. If Lionsgate had to find a new director for the series’ second entry, choosing one who has more experience with higher-intensity scenes does makes sense. Though Lawrence’s name does not come with the prestige of the other directors on the shortlist, he has the most experience of any of them with directing a big-budget action film. He’s Relatively Inexpensive Early rumors of Ross’ exit had pegged money as the main stumbling block when trying to recruit the director for the second film. We know that Ross made most of his money from “The Hunger Games” on the back end, taking a much lower fee upfront. Lionsgate was reportedly looking to not spend a ton of money on the director for “Catching Fire,” and the up-and-coming directors filling out the shortlist more or less confirms that. What makes Lawrence different is that he has the mainstream success that the other independent film directors do not, but he’s probably just as willing to work for Lionsgate’s lowered fees. He Knows the Tone Lawrence’s first two films take place in worlds based largely in a reality not far from our own, but ones that add in fantastical elements. In ” I Am Legend ,” Will Smith’s character lives in (near) solitude in a post-zombie-vampire outbreak Manhattan, where he hunts the wild animals that now populate the city. Lawrence has established he can make a film set in a world vaguely resembling our own, so it’s not hard to imagine Lawrence being able to make the leap to Panem. He’s Done Romance Granted, it wasn’t great romance, but it counts. ” Water for Elephants ” was also based on a best-selling novel and could come in handy in dealing with the amped-up love triangle among Katniss, Peeta and Gale. Bennett Miller Wasn’t Available The Playlist originally reported that the race for the director’s position came down to two directors, Lawrence and Bennett Miller . The “Moneyball” director was clearly the more distinguished of the two, but he had spent the last few years developing ” Foxcatcher ,” a true-life story about the heir to the DuPont fortune who murdered an Olympic wrestler. In the past few months, Miller has seen “Foxcatcher” finally come together, adding Channing Tatum, Steve Carell and, just recently, Mark Ruffalo to the cast. If Miller would have signed on to direct “Catching Fire,” he would have had to further delay “Foxcatcher” just after getting development off the ground. What Is a Thought?

What is a thought? Where does it come from? Once you have a thought where does it disappear? What comes first a feeling or a thought? Thought comes from pure consciousness, but it has to go through conditioned consciousness, before it surfaces. If your thought comes from the field of pure conciseness, it is the evolutionary impulse of the universe. It is pure creativity. If your thought is coming from conditioned consciousness, it is based on previous experience and pretty much a repetition and it is in constricted awareness. Expanded awareness, though it is a higher level, is still a conditioned awareness; you just connected through the web of relationships. In pure awareness you are connected to the whole universe. At the level of pure awareness, where you are truly free and your thoughts follow the evolutionary impulse you can reach the realm of pure creativity, beyond any problems and beyond the need for any solutions. Chase & Status ‘Over The Moon’ With Album’s Success

British duo released their sophomore album, No More Idols, in the U.S. this week. By Akshay Bhansali Will Kennard and Saul Milton of Chase & Status Photo: Gareth Cattermole/ Getty Images If a jam-packed show at Miami’s Ultra Music Festival , production collaborations with Rihanna and a sold-out U.S. tour are any indication, America is thirsting for British EDM duo Chase & Status. Saul “Chase” Milton and Will “Status” Kennard released their second album, No More Idols, in the U.S. this week via Casablanca Records. The album, released in Europe in January 2011, is certified platinum in the U.K., with more than 500,000 units sold. “We’ve been over the moon with the success of No More Idols, ” Kennard told MTV News recently. “It was beyond belief for us, really, and true, tunes have been floating around here for a while, but it’s getting a proper release.” Kennard described the “proper release” as a “big, full package” with plenty of remixes, including efforts by Feed Me, Nero and Dillon Francis. The deluxe edition will include a DVD and exclusive content from their 2011 No More Idols Tour. No More Idols runs a gamut of EDM , with a bit of grime, dubstep, drum n’ bass, rock and more. It houses hit U.K. singles in “End Credits” featuring vocalist/actor/friend Plan B, rock-ish hit “Hypest Hype” featuring Tempa T, and the cinematically exquisite “Blind Faith” featuring Liam Bailey, among others. The hit album has galvanized quite a following Stateside, and Kennard said he and Milton are grateful for the unexpected attention. “It’s an exciting time for electronic dance music, and we are just proud to be a part of it,” Kennard said. “We did the tour last year, and we thought it was going to be a wash out, really, because you’re a million miles away from home. The record didn’t get picked up by radio. So on and so forth. And then you go and do these clubs and these shows, and they are sold out full to the brim with people knowing all the words and everything. And it’s a great feeling, man.” Chase & Status plan to bring their live show — often accompanied by drummer Andy Gangadeen, James Brown and vocal collaborators Rage, Tempa T, and Liam Bailey — to Indio, California’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Save for a few festival gigs, the duo now mean to hunker down in their lab and hope to complete their third album by year’s end. They are still in the early stages, tinkering around with sounds, but they say inspiration is all around them. “You can’t ignore what Skrillex has done,” Milton revealed. “We are good friends with Sonny. He’s a class act, but musically he’s just done something really incredible and just run with it. Nero as well . Odd Future, we are massive fans of what they do.” “I love Die Antwoord ,” Kennard added. “Love what they are doing. A$AP Rocky is really cool. Kill the Noise. … There is so much exciting, inspiring stuff.” What do you think of Chase & Status’ No More Idols ? Leave your comment below! Related Artists Chase & Status

‘Mad Men’ Creators Used Fat Suit For Betty Draper’s Weight Gain

January Jones’ piled on the pounds in the second episode. By Gil Kaufman January Jones in “Mad Men” Photo: AMC If you followed the arc of “Mad Men” actress January Jones’ real-life pregnancy, you know that the slim TV star never looked … that big. And by that big we mean the really full-figured look Jones’ character, Betty Draper
, showed off during Sunday night’s second episode of the show’s fifth season. That Betty was, well, big all over: in the face, the arms, middle. And while we still don’t know the identity of Jones’ real-life baby daddy, one mystery was solved on Monday when it was revealed that Jones was wearing a fat suit and prosthetic face and neck appliances to make her character look heavy duty. While Jones was pregnant with her now-six-month-old song Xander during filming, instead of writing that into the plot, series creator Matthew Weiner had the series’ writers explain it away by explaining that Betty had packed on the pounds out of boredom, depression and a distance from her second husband, Henry Francis. The shocking makeover divided fans and once again caused the kind of Monday morning quarterbacking that TV execs salivate over, which was totally the point. According to the Hollywood Reporter the makeup artists on the show did the same thing for Jones that they did for cast mate Elizabeth Moss when her character Peggy Olsen was pregnant during season one. The crack team covered Jones in a fat suit and prosthetic facial and neck appliances that gave Betty a surprisingly zaftig look. In addition, they used a back double for the scene where Betty steps out of the shower. While Jones’ Betty has a history of weigh issues stemming from a childhood as a chubby kid whose every meal was monitored by her mother, only to shed that weight to become a slender model, the Reporter speculated that her emotional eating may have been triggered by her ex Don Draper’s sexy, slim new wife, Megan. Jones gave birth to Xander in September and was quickly back to her old shape, thanks, in part, she claimed, to such unconventional methods as eating her own placenta. “It’s not witch-crafty or anything. It’s something I was very hesitant about,” she told People magazine at the time of eating the lining of her uterus in dehydrated pill form. “But we’re only the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas.” Related Photos ‘Mad’ Hook Ups: The Relationships Of ‘Mad Men’

Nike NFL Uniforms: Hit or Miss?

The world of fashion met the world of professional sports in Brooklyn today, as some of the NFL’s biggest stars gathered with representatives from Nike and Commissioner Roger Goodell to unveil new uniforms for the league. Dubbed the Nike Elite 51, the shirts and pants are meant to be more elastic and lighter. As you can see by this Chicago Bears mockup, the actual look varies little: “The performance is so important for the athletes,” Goodell said. “What we tried to do is innovate. Even if the look doesn’t change, there’s innovation… There’ll be more to come.” Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens, Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers and Wes Welker of the New England Patriots were among the stars who modeled the new uniforms on stage. Said Super Bowl hero Victor Cruz of the Super Bowl of the champion New York Giants: “They’re tight. You can’t get pulled or snagged on. That’s the biggest thing for me: making sure that I’m sleek and I’m fast and I can’t be grabbed or held.”

Carson Daly Apologizes for Joke About Gay People, JetBlue Pilot

On a JetBlue flight from New York to Las Vegas yesterday, a group of passengers were forced to band together and subdue Clayton Osbon , a pilot who simply flipped out, behaving erratically, banging on the cockpit door and screaming out numbers. On his radio show this morning, meanwhile, Carson Daly referenced the incident. “Most of the people were on their way to some sort of security conference in Las Vegas,” he said. “It was like a bunch of dudes and well trained dudes… thank God.” The Voice host then added, laughing: “With my luck, it would be like… ‘this is the flight going to [the gay pride parade] in San Francisco,'” changing his tone to sound more effeminate and saying: “Uh, we’re headed down to Vegas for the floral convention.” The implication, naturally? Folks such as that would not have been able to bring down the JetBlue pilot . A few hours after making the comments, Daly Tweeted an apology: “This morning on my radio show I attempted to make fun of myself & offended others by mistake. I sincerely apologize.” Do you accept this apology? Do you think he should have made one?

Tyler, The Creator To Shoot ‘Analog 2′ and ’50’ Videos Next

Odd Future head reveals on ‘RapFix Live’ that MellowHype’s ’50’ is on the production schedule. By Rob Markman Tyler, The Creator Photo: MTV News There is no video director in the game quite like Tyler, the Creator . As Wolf Haley, the Odd Future head has already put out a number of memorable vids, including his critically acclaimed “Yonkers,” which helped him win a VMA in 2011. Most recently, Wolf directed and dropped two videos off OFWGKTA’s new album, The OF Tape, Vol. 2 — “Rella” and “NY (Ned Flander)” — and he’s now debating which track he should shoot next. “I kinda wanna do ‘Analog 2′ for sure, but the MellowHype ’50’ song, I have an idea for that that would be awesome,” Tyler said when he and the rest of the OF crew appeared on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” “That song, just g–damn, that song’s crazy.” “Analog 2” is a Frank Ocean- and Syd the Kid-assisted sequel to the original track which appeared on Tyler’s Goblin album last year — well, kind of. “I didn’t go in to make a sequel for a song, I just went in to make a song and I didn’t have a name for it and just called it that,” Tyler said. “That wasn’t intentional to be part two, I just called it that because I couldn’t come up with another name and I was lazy.” There are some distinct similarities between the two songs, however. On “Analog 2,” Frank Ocean lovingly sings, “Could you can meet by the lake,” echoing the words that Tyler utters on the hook of the original “Analog.” “It wasn’t that I was gonna make I part two to this, nah, it was just not being creative,” Tyler insisted. Wolf wouldn’t give up any details on his video treatments, though, saying he had to protect his ideas. “See, I can’t tell you. I don’t tell my business like that son,” he said. “I might say some sh–, then some n—a might steal that idea, put that sh– out and then I’m f—ed.” What should be the next video from Odd Future’s The OF Tape, Vol. 2 ?
