‘American Idol’ Brings The Pressure On Group Night

Early favorites Jacee Badeaux, Brett Loewenstern, Lauren Alaina survive, while other hopefuls went down in flames. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler, Jenniger Lopez and Randy Jackson at “American Idol” Hollywood Week Photo: Michael Becker / FOX Group night on “American Idol” is notoriously brutal. It’s full of attitude, fighting, ragged nerves and exhaustion. And that’s just from the audience at home watching the ridiculous diva behavior onscreen. But after pulling an all-nighter, a number of this year’s picks to click, including teens Jacee Badeaux and Lauren Alaina, as well Chris Medina, James Durbin, Brett Loewenstern and Chelsee Oaks, survived to sing another day, while some early favorites went down in flames, unable to handle the pressure. On Wednesday night’s (February 16) show, producers figured they’d up the ante this year on the contestants by telling them, after they’d already formed their groups, that they must be comprised of a mix of singers from day one and day two of last week’s Hollywood eliminations . That sent the 168 remaining wannabes scrambling to rework their sets. The first two segments were devoted to showing the high school lunchroom nightmare of singers desperate to find someone’s group to join and facing heart-crushing rejection at every turn. Then, with just 10 hours to perfect their songs amid the din of nearly 170 voices roaring at once, contestants grabbed any space they could, from bathrooms to parking garages, and got to work. The pressure almost claimed the fragile Ashley Sullivan, who came close to leaving the show, while 15-year-old Jacee Badeaux was booted from his group in the middle of the night and several other singers either got dumped or bailed on their ensembles at the 11th hour. On the verge of breaking up because they couldn’t find a day-two person, redheaded bullied belter Brett Loewenstern ‘s quartet was saved when they picked up Badeaux. When the singers finally got a chance to, well, sing, there were plenty of new or little-seen faces who shone. Among them were New Jersey auditioner and makeup artist Pia Toscano, 22, who did her sultry best on Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” in a trio that got the day started off right with yeses all around. Male diva Jordan Dorsey bailed on his group to join up with Robbie Rosen and sing a doo-wop version of the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” setting up an intense rivalry with his old cohorts, but getting sweet revenge by moving on. His old pals, though, survived the breakup as well by nailing Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You.” Nobody wanted to be in a group with overconfident Tiffany Rios the night before, so the judges allowed her an exception to form a duo with tattooed blonde Jessica Yantz. “It was really bad,” Randy Jackson said, though, after the pair made a hot mess of Beyonc

‘American Idol’ Hollywood Week Could Be End For Season 10 Early Faves

Will Chris Medina, Lauren Alaina and others make it past the grueling round starting Thursday night? By Gil Kaufman “American Idol” hopeful Chris Medina Photo: FOX It always feels like the “American Idol” audition rounds go on forever. But, miraculously, they’re already over, and Thursday night’s (February 10) show will give us our first glimpse of the dreaded Hollywood Week. We’ve already had some serious ups and downs so far this season, with the joy of new judge Steven Tyler’s unpredictable, wacky personality and winning charm, the seeming bumper crop of stellar talent in Austin and New Jersey, the washout in Los Angeles and a few 15-year-olds who seemed to suggest the lowering of the age limit was a good idea after all. We won’t know until Thursday night which singers were able to keep it together in Los Angeles, but there are a number of promising candidates who seem like they may sail through the next round. The first night in New Jersey introduced us to the hard-luck Bronx tale of Travis Orlando and Staten Island doo-wop girl Brielle Von Hugel. On the next night in New Orleans , we got jazzy Jordan Dorsey, J.Lo fanatic Jovany Barreto and lovable social outcast Brett Loewenstern . That show also gave us one of our first promising youngsters, 15-year-old Lafayette native Jaycee Badeaux, who killed it with an Otis Redding tune. Milwaukee served up its share of corkers as well, from 16-year-old country crooner Scotty McCreery to soul sister Naima Adedapo, bar mitzvah singer Jerome Bell and Thia Megia, another stellar 15-year-old. It also yielded one of the season’s most emotional stories in Chris Medina , who was trying out in honor of his fianc

‘American Idol’ Finds Golden Girls In San Francisco

Final audition night has lots of strong female contestants and one standout male in James Durbin. By Gil Kaufman Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson on “American Idol” Photo: FOX The “American Idol” train pulled into San Francisco on Wednesday night (February 9) for its final shot at discovering a diamond in the rough in the same city where the show found Adam Lambert two years ago. And, wouldn’t you know it, they found the man who just might prove to be the straight-young-dad version of Lambert in James Durbin, along with a gang of really strong female contenders. Ukrainian singer and sexy video vixen Inessa Lee, 22, was not one of them, though. She seemed more primed for next American, um, adult entertainer, with her belly dancing, yoga poses and an especially wobbly “All Out of Love” by Air Supply. Steven Tyler was charmed, but even her Betty Boop voice and their shared Eastern European ancestry wasn’t enough to punch a ticket to Hollywood. “Cute, you get 110 percent; but singing … eesh,” Tyler said. Duffy has been good to a number of auditioners this year, and a song by the Brit did the trick again for raven-haired Tucson, Arizona, dance-studio manager Brittany Mazur, 21, as well, who brought a smile to the panel’s faces with her rich, soulful voice. There were also unanimous yeses for jazzy Lara Johnston and sensitive brawny belter Matthew Nuss, whom Tyler dubbed a “diamond in the rough.” Stefano Langone had one of those stories “Idol” cannot resist. The unemployed 21-year-old was told he’d never walk again after a horrible car crash, but he rallied and brought his positive energy to Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” nailing his audition thanks to some powerful, if a bit nasally, vocals. “Nice voice, dude, got a little ‘hood up in there … I like that,” Randy Jackson said, praising Langone’s streetwise phrasing. Jennifer Lopez had props for his matinee-idol looks and star quality too. Big round glasses and LBC attitude got karaoke host Clint Jun Gamboa some attention in the audition room, but it was his high-and-tight, gospel&B-flavored cover of Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire” that put him through. “The notes and the way you sang that song was brilliant,” Tyler said, with Jackson calling Gamboa one of the best auditions of the San Francisco trip. The night’s signature wackadoodle was unemployed El Paso, Texas, clown Kenneth Berba, who ran into the room wearing a homemade lion outfit that earned him an immediate no. That, of course, set up the obligatory horrible-singer montage, highlighted by a maniac in an incredibly detailed homemade Transformer costume that blew the judges away more than his silly try at “Born to be Wild.” Not easily impressed by other people’s footwear, Lopez loved Julie Zorrilla’s golden shoes. The 20-year-old student comes from a well-heeled family that left Colombia to escape shakedowns from the nation’s guerrilla fighters in the 1990s, and her brilliant smile and upbeat attitude was almost as engaging as her emotionally rich cover of the “Idol” staple “Summertime.” Breathy and leisurely, Zorrilla put plenty of attitude into her take on the “Porgy and Bess” classic. “Fabulous, beautiful, great range,” Tyler told the alluring beauty. “And great star quality.” Lopez appreciated her confidence, and Jackson liked how she switched up the arrangement. We’ve had precious few rockers so far this season, and it seemed like long and curly-haired blond belter Dave Combs, 25, might have the stuff. His rough-and-tumble attempt at the Beatles’ “Oh! Darling” just didn’t do it for Tyler (wearing a Beatles T-shirt, no less), who just seemed annoyed at how off the melodic mark Combs was. He was the first of a string of fellas who blew it and got harsh rebukes from the Aerosmith singer. A week after her house burned down, strawberry-haired free-spirit barista Emily Anne Reed, 26, proved to be plenty cute and fun to look at, but her falsetto attempt at Harry Warren’s jazz tune “You’re Getting to Be a Habit With Me” split the judges. Lopez loved her unique, high and squeaky tone, but Tyler thought the melody left a lot to be desired. Randy disagreed and complimented the unusual tone, which left it up to Lopez, who agreed to give Reed one more shot. The producers saved a doozy for the final audition spot. The hard-knock story told by James Durbin, 21, was almost too much to believe. He grew up barely knowing his bass-playing dad, who was always on the road, and was raised by his mom after his father died of a drug overdose. Later diagnosed with both Tourette syndrome and Asperger’s syndrome, a high-functioning form of autism, Durbin turned to music to help calm his sometimes-rattled nerves. The unemployed young father with the faux-hawk had everything to prove to the panel, and he immediately grabbed their ears with a wailing, Lambert-esque moon-shot take on Led Zeppelin’s “You Shook Me.” And, in what will likely be another boost to Aerosmith catalog sales , he asked if he could give “Dream On” a shot as well. Tyler dug it, shaking his head along, his eyes closed as he took in Durbin’s booming, emotion-laden voice. “I like you, I like your voice, my god, what a range,” Randy said. “Wow, that was over the top, wow, that was so, so good,” Tyler added. “You sing from where you’re supposed to sing from, from feeling, from heart, from our soul, from the need to feel and make others feel,” Lopez gushed. And so it goes. Next stop, Hollywood Week, which kicks off Thursday night, promising much more elation, heartbreak and stress-induced meltdowns. Kanye West, Killers, 30 Seconds To Mars To Headline Lollapalooza Chile

First international edition of festival will be held in early April in Santiago. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Gareth Cattermole/ Getty Images Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell has long dreamed of taking his festival overseas. After announcing earlier this year that he would finally make that vision come true by putting on a Lollapalooza in Chile in April, he unleashed the lineup for the two-day event on Friday (January 28). The top of the roster reads like a who’s who of past Lolla performers and includes such headliners as Kanye West, the Killers, 30 Seconds to Mars and, of course, Farrell’s own Jane’s Addiction. The show, which will take place in O’Higgins Park in Santiago on April 2 and 3, will also feature the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Deftones, Fatboy Slim, the Flaming Lips, Cypress Hill, 311, Cold War Kids, the National and Ben Harper. After nearly 20 years of wandering the U.S. and then putting down stakes along the Chicago lakefront since 2005, Lollapalooza is one of the most recognized music festivals on the planet. The Chilean show will, as promised, feature a mix of international acts and South American stars, who will perform on five stages set up in the scenic downtown park. Farrell has also promised to engage in a “cultural exchange” and bring some of the Chilean artists to this summer’s Lollapalooza in Chicago, whose lineup has not yet been announced. “The job we did to gather these artists for 2011 was remarkable,” Farrell said in a statement. “Imagine gathering 60 artists while the contract ink is still wet. We put it together at a record pace as we had four months. We did not want to come to Chile with a lineup that was anything other than world-class. … Our selections are very animated, with much diversity. There is Chilean talent in the mix. … Our ambition is to plant a very strong seed in Chile. One that will grow over the years, and provide Santiago with an event for the ages.” Among the other acts on the Lollapalooza Chile roster: Armin Van Buuren, Sublime with Rome, Empire of the Sun, CSS, Los Bunkers, Cat Power, Devendra Banhart, the Drums, Boys Noize, Steel Pulse, Fischerspooner, PerryEtty vs. Chris Cox (Farrell’s electronic side project), Mala Rodriguez, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Datarock, Todos Tus Muertos, Bomba Estereo, Ghostland Observatory, Joachim Garraud, Francisca Valenzuela, Zeta Bosio, Anita Tijoux, Quique Neira, Latin Bitman, DJ Raff, Toy Selektah, Fractal + Joe Vasconcellos, Fother Muckers, Astro, Devil Presley, Denver, Como Asesinar a Felipes, the Ganjas, Matanza, Ital, New Kids on the Noise, Magictwins, Los Pulentos, Achu, Cuchara, Mundano and Los Plumabits. ‘American Idol’ This Week: Adam Lambert’s Audition And More

At this time over the past nine seasons, an ‘Idol’ dad went to Washington and William Hung made his debut. By Katie Byrne Adam Lambert auditions for “American Idol” on January 20, 2009 Photo: FOX The second week of “American Idol” is about to kick off, so let’s review what we’ve learned from season 10 so far: Steven Tyler has taught us the value of a sound bite , Jacee Badeaux and Brett Loewenstern taught us not to judge on first impressions alone, and Randy Jackson taught us … well, let’s not get carried away. We haven’t learned that much yet. But at this same time over the past nine seasons of “American Idol,” we had already met Adam Lambert and saw one “Idol” alum’s dad replace Ted Kennedy in the U.S. Senate. Let’s take a look back at This Week in “American Idol” to see what went down during the second week of seasons past: 2010: Mr. Brown Goes to Washington Back in season five, Ayla Brown made it to the top 16 with her booming voice, all-American look and prodigious poise. Apparently, all these qualities were better fit for a career in politics, where Ayla’s dad, Scott Brown, has thrived, assuming Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat in a special election this week last year. MTV News caught up with Ayla in January 2010 right after her dad’s win to see why she thought “Idol” didn’t work out for her back in 2007. “I didn’t think people got the chance to see who I was and my personality,” she told us. “It was hard to overcome that, but I gave it my all and I’m just disappointed America didn’t vote for me.” Well, it looks like America voted for the Brown family the second time around. 2009: Adam Lambert Wails His Way Into Our Hearts When we were first introduced to Adam Lambert, he was fresh off a stint in the musical “Wicked” and got the “theatrical” brush-off from Simon Cowell (who eventually came around and voted him through to Hollywood after all). While that first meeting wasn’t too far off from the over-the-top performer we came to know and love, what’s really surprising is how MTV News “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello described Lambert in his live blog of the season-eight San Francisco auditions : “8:48 pm – ‘Idol’ math: David Cook + Clay Aiken = Adam Lambert.” What?!? More like Lady Gaga + Robert Plant, or maybe even new judge Steven Tyler. But Jim turned out to be more than a little prescient in his next live-blog entry: “8:50 pm – Adam just came out of the closet. Welllll, he just said he saw Paula Abdul on tour when he was ten. So… ” 2007: “American Idol” and the Sundance Kid There’s nothing “Idol” fans love more than a totally surprising (and totally thrilling) audition. One of the most memorable first impressions belongs to Jason “Sundance” Head, the then-28-year-old son of “Treat Her Right” singer Roy Head . Sundance wowed the judges with his bluesy take on “Stormy Monday” — especially after he walked in the room with an overgrown goatee and his shirt unbuttoned a bit too far. “Powerful voice; didn’t expect it,” Paula Abdul said when he finished, with hard-to-please Simon Cowell even chiming in, “I’m going to be amazed if you don’t make the finals.” That part didn’t go so well: Sundance never recaptured his “Stormy Monday” glory, and he missed out on the season-six top 12 in favor of Sanjaya Malakar. Ouch. 2004: He Bangs, He Bangs On the other side of the audition spectrum was William Hung. When it comes to bad auditions, no one is more memorable than the Berkeley engineering student who informed the judges that he had “no professional training.” But Hung had the last laugh: His debut album, Inspiration, actually sold tens of thousands of copies, which isn’t far off from Lee DeWyze’s numbers. On Monday (January 24), McCoy announced the details of his Sgt. Schlepper’s Who Needs Hearts Club Band Tour (good name, BTW), a North American jaunt that kicks off March 17 in Toronto and crisscrosses the continent before wrapping up April 3 in Seattle. Joining him on the trek will be his good pal Pete Wentz — who will be taking his new Black Cards project out on the road for their first full-scale tour — rappers Donnis and XV, and hip-hop/funk collective Bad Rabbits. An exclusive pre-sale begins Tuesday, along with special VIP packages that include a ticket, a meet-and-greet with McCoy and, according to a press release from Atlantic Records, “a Travie piggy-bank (for all the future Billionaires).” For more information about pre-sales and VIPs, head over to the tour’s ticketing site or McCoy’s website . All remaining tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning Friday. In addition to his upcoming tour, McCoy is set to enter the studio with his group Gym Class Heroes to put the finishing touches on The Papercut Chronicles II, their first album since 2008’s The Quilt. In late 2009, McCoy told MTV News that the new GCH album is shaping up to be a return to their early days (as evidenced by the title), saying, “It’s definitely going back to the essence of Gym Class Heroes, which is four dudes sitting in a room, vibing off each other and making organic, dark metal.” Dates for Travie McCoy’s Sgt.
