As GM Plans IPO, AP Finally Makes Prominent Reference to Drivers’ ‘Resentment’ of Bailout

In what I believe is the first direct acknowledgment by the wire service of what so many have known for so long, the Associated Press’s Tom Krisher wrote the following in an August 5 story about plans for an initial public offering by government-controlled General Motors (bolds are mine throughout this post): Ever since the Obama administration gave the automaker a $50 billion dollar survival loan last year, many drivers have scorned the company and bought cars from rivals. Even though GM has cut costs, changed leadership, and reported its first quarterly profit since 2007, the resentment will linger as long as taxpayers have a 61 percent stake in the company. Actually, the “resentment” goes back to December 2008, when the Bush administration bowed to pressure to use Troubled Asset Relief Program funds to “temporarily” loan a combined $13.4 billion to GM and Chrysler. Also, the total bailout dollars involved are at least $63 billion when GMAC is included, as it should be. If you have relied exclusively on AP reports and its news feeds to subscribing publications since then, Krisher’s assertion that “drivers have scorned the company” would more than likely be the first time you have seen an AP reporter record that observation. Any AP reporter covering the company almost any time in the intervening 20 months could have observed the existence of the scorn and resentment. But if this factor has ever been directly cited by an AP reporter covering the car industry until now, I haven’t seen it. In January 2009, the first month after those “loan” funds were disbursed, year-over-year sales at GM fell 49% . In previous months, the struggling automaker’s year-over-year declines had been in the 30% range. In just one month, the company’s sales decline in the recessionary economy went from roughly matching those seen at archrivals Ford and Toyota to about what cratering Chrysler was experiencing. GM’s sales plunge of 42% during last year’s first five months was far worse than Ford’s or Toyota’s, though not quite as bad as Chrysler’s. During 2009, I only recall two instances where AP got into the neighborhood of explaining what was really going on. The first was in  a May 1, 2009 story in the wake of April’s sales releases: Detroit’s Big Three is becoming Ford and the other two. While its rivals stay afloat with billions in government aid, Ford grabbed a bigger slice of the American car market in April with record sales of its fuel-efficient Fusion. … Most of those gains (at Ford) came at the expense of General Motors and Chrysler, which unlike Ford are dependent on federal help. Later in the report, the AP’s Kimberly S. Johnson and Dan Strumpf quoted an analyst who tied Ford’s success to Chrysler being in bankruptcy court and GM’s near-certain arrival there. Clearly those concerns were relevant, but the unmentioned scorn and resentment were already quite visible. An early June 2009 Rasmussen poll confirmed it : “The government bailout and takeover of General Motors remains very unpopular among the public. Just 26% of Americans believe the bailout was a good idea, and nearly as many support a boycott of GM products.” The other instance of near recognition came in the eighth paragraph of an early November 2009 report (covered at NewsBusters ; at Bizzyblog ) about October’s sales results. In that item, Krisher and Dee-Ann Durbin wrote: Ford Motor Co.’s sales rose 3 percent and it gained U.S. market share for the 12th time in 13 months as its critically acclaimed vehicles continue to grab buyers from rivals. Ford has benefited from consumer goodwill because it didn’t take government bailout money or go into bankruptcy protection, as General Motors and Chrysler did. That’s fine, but it’s one thing to note that customers like the company that wasn’t bailed out. It’s quite another to assert that many resentful customers and potential customers abandoned GM and Chrysler because they were bailed out. Also, Ford wasn’t necessarily the only beneficiary of anti-GM and anti-Chrysler sentiment. So why now? Why did the AP have to wait for GM Chairman Whitacre to say what he said before acknowledging what all of us already knew? Has the wire service seen protecting the company as part of its mission until now? If so, why? Finally, Krisher cannot prove his claim in the opening excerpt that “the resentment will linger as long as taxpayers have a 61 percent stake in the company.” It’s very likely — I would suggest virtually certain — that the resentment will linger until the government sells its entire stake in the company. It’s also not unreasonable to believe that for some, especially those who remember how the government and the company “ripped off” unsecured bondholders during bankruptcy proceedings, the resentment will last a long, long time even if the government fully divests. Report: Tiger Woods Divorce Final, Elin Woods to Receive Record $750M Settlement

MSNBC, Fox News and the UK’s Sun are reporting that the Tiger Woods-Elin Nordegren divorce is final, with only a filing in Orlando County Court remaining. “Everything’s signed. Elin is ready to file for divorce at Orlando County Court,” says an inside source. “She expects to sometime in the next seven days.” The settlement Elin is to receive, which has become the subject of much debate in recent weeks, is reportedly valued in the neighborhood of $750 million. Yes, three-quarters of a billion dollars, believed to be the biggest payout of a celebrity divorce ever. There are conditions, however, according to reports: Tiger may not bring any other females around their children. Elin can never publicly speak about his various mistresses. Elin gets full custody of the kids but they share legal custody. That means Tiger will share decisions about the kids, and as such, Elin will not be able to permanently relocate them to her native Sweden anytime soon. Tiger’s main caveat, though, was that she shut yer yap – for all eternity. A pal said: “Tiger’s main fear is her telling her story after he’s rebuilt his reputation, sending him back to the gutter. The price of that sum is her silence.” “Complete confidentiality. No interviews, tell-all books, or TV appearances about this for the rest of her life – even if Tiger dies first – or she’ll lose the lot.” Basically, Rachel Uchitel , Jaimee Grubbs, Joslyn James, Devon James and the dozen other hoes we know of ended up costing Tiger about $37.5 million per. One report suggests that Elin Woods ended up with double the sum she sought after her lawyers determined Tiger is worth much more than $1 billion . Her friend explained: “Elin’s legal team have done a great job digging up all sorts of assets.” We would have to say that’s the case if the sum is correct. While it should be noted that The Sun is a British tabloid, the $750 million figure has been reported by more than one source over the past few weeks. Let’s just say we wouldn’t bet the under on $500 million anyway.

Eminem’s ‘Not Afraid’: Newark Locals Say Video ‘Shows His Heart’

‘For him to have brought himself here and that video shoot here, it’s gonna bring more attention to the Brick City,’ one local says. By Shaheem Reid Eminem shoots a video in Newark, NJ Photo: Alleyesonwho.com NEWARK, New Jersey — Imagine you’re walking down your block and somebody tells you that Eminem is filming his new video in your neighborhood. Imagine, even further, that you live in a tough city like Newark, which is near New York but doesn’t exactly see that kind of high-profile action every day. But of course, in one of the main sections of Eminem’s just-released video for “Not Afraid” (from his forthcoming Recovery LP ), Slim Shady walks down Market Street in downtown Newark among some locals. “It was a month or three weeks ago,” Newark native Kyro “Ro” Inman, who appeared as an extra in the video, told MTV News. “I was walking [on Market Street] and I asked, ‘What is going on?’ They said, ‘Eminem is shooting a video.’ I had to come see for myself. I saw a big commotion, a lot of people gathered here.” Ro said the producers of the video must have seen some pizzazz or “a wave” in him, and asked him to take part in the video. “They had us walking back and forth here,” Ro said, standing in front of a Dunkin Donuts on Market near Broad Street. “Like 10 or 11 times back and forth. [There was] 10 people, maybe 12 people that was walking back and forth with us.” However, Ro didn’t get to see the star himself. “[Em] wasn’t even here when I arrived,” Ro added. “They had somebody else, like a stunt man, for him. He was standing, walking back and forth. They said [Em] was in the car. I didn’t even get to see him.” Luckier on that count were Lamont Vaughn and Roberto Prophete, who said they got to see Slim Shady in the flesh. Prophete owns the clothing store Oladejon on Market Street, and Vaughn was right around the corner at a vending stand he owns and walked over once he heard about the production. “He was standing right here,” Vaughn said. “Somebody came and told us Eminem was filming — I didn’t believe it. I saw him when he came back out of that trailer. I didn’t see the part when he was walking out of the crowd. I saw him when he came out of the trailer. Everybody went crazy: ‘Aeehaeeehhhh! There he go right here!’ They had the whole street blocked off. Newark treated him like it was a homecoming — that’s real. That’s what we love. We want more to come back. Landmarks are all over this city.” “For him to have brought himself here and that video shoot here, it’s gonna bring more attention to the Brick City,” Vaughn added. “It shows his heart. He’s a brother to me. I listen to is music deeply. He can go many different ways with it: Commercial when he gets deep with it; he touches you when he goes hard real with it. When he goes commercial, it’s still real, but it’s funny.” Prophete said that as the video blows up, it’ll bring welcome attention to the city. “It’s a basically going to change it into a little landmark. This building right here, [the former Paramount Theater], used to be an old theater. It’s gonna bring more and more people out here to see the landmarks.” “Not Afraid” was directed by Richard Lee. Recovery is set for a June 22 release. What’s the next neighborhood Eminem should film a video in? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Eminem

News Laws Are Death to Cats in Australia – Suburban Cats to Be Legally Trapped & Euthanized Under New Local Cat Laws

Cat ownership in WA is under siege by local cat laws newly introduced by the Shire of Swan and soon to be implemented by the City of Joondalup. Cat owners will be penalized by fines if their cat unwittingly trespasses onto a neighbors property without their permission. The ultimate penalty is the trapping of your beloved moggy by a neighbor in a trap supplied by the shire and the impoundment and possible euthanization of your cat if you can’t locate it within 7 days. Location map of City of Joondalup, Western Aus… The legal trapping of cats opened up by these new local cat laws will only encourage vigilantes who hate cats to have an ‘open season’ on cats in their neighborhood. The Cat Haven, a well known Perth based cat rescue group have already reported incidences of cats caught in traps being drowned in lakes. A horrible death for any animal with no chance of escape and astonishingly still a set of laws introduced in such poor format by local councils that policing these laws is almost impossible. Very little forethought went into the ultimate outcomes that these laws would fester, if councils honestly thought that residents of their shire would act responsibly under these new laws they have already been witness to the folly of their naivety. With cats being drowned in traps and my own experience of having my cat Simon being trapped by a neighbor in my own street and taken to the pound with no consultation with the shire. I managed to rescue my cat Simon on Day 6, it was clearly a lucky day for him will your cat be so lucky? Parts of these laws have validation with responsible cat ownership including limiting the number of cats per household, sterilizing cats, micro-chipping or identifying your cat with a collar & identification tag and keeping your cat indoors from the hours of 9pm to 6 am is also very doable. What these laws fail to take into consideration is the intrinsic nature of cats and the impossibility of cat owners to always control some of their inherit behaviors which have allowed cats to survive well prior to their domestication. Cats are highly independent creatures who value their freedom, they have instinctual drives to patrol their territory and to chase off any intruders entering their territory. Cats have very strong maternal instincts and are predatory in nature and mark their territory with their scent to keep any other animals out of their area. Cats rely on these instincts to get through life and expecting them to change these behaviors is literally asking them to stop being a cat. Cats cannot be trained like the dog species and forcing cat owners to achieve the impossible by preventing their cats from occasionally wandering into a neighbors yard is simply ludicrous! The harsh penalty of trapping cats, impounding them and having your cat euthanized as a result is a sickening and heart breaking reality now for cat owners and their families. That this type of action is being implemented by your local shire and your neighbors is just disgusting. You can protest against these new local cat laws by visiting www.aussiecats.com and having your say. Lil’ Cease Says Reunion With Lil Kim, Junior M.A.F.I.A. ‘Needs To Happen’

‘I know Big would want us all eating together in one room,’ Cease tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes and Sway Calloway Junior M.A.F.I.A. Photo: VH-1 One of music’s all-time great lyrical masters, Christopher “The Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace would have been 38 years old on Friday (May 21) had he lived. Biggie has been gone 13 years , but everyone who loved him still celebrates his memory. Junior M.A.F.I.A. member Lil’ Cease told MTV News that he wants to make Biggie look down smiling by setting up a major reconciliation. “If I could give Big a gift for his 38th birthday, it would be to bring the family together,” Cease said. “Just to see all the people he had around him in one room together: Me, Kim, D-Roc, Gutter, the whole M.A.F.I.A. Those people, it wasn’t business with us — it was friends. I didn’t write rhymes. I’m sure [Biggie] didn’t put me in the group because I had talent. He said, ‘I wanna make sure you good for the rest of your life. I’mma build you your own lane. You take it from there.’ He did that for me and nine other people in the group. “He also did that for the people that surrounded us, the friends like [Lance] ‘Un’ Rivera. A lot of us are here because of what Biggie built. At the end of the day, no matter what [gripes M.A.F.I.A. members may have], if everybody say they love Big like they say they would love him, I know [a reunion] is something he would want. I know something that’s [probably] bothering him is that everybody is separated.” The Junior M.A.F.I.A. imploded a little more than five years ago, when Lil’ Cease and M.A.F.I.A. member Banger were forced to testify in Lil’ Kim’s infamous perjury case . In the aftermath, Kim publicly disassociated herself from her onetime close friends. There have been dis records, lawsuits and obviously the Queen Bee’s nearly 10-month incarceration . Still, Cease says he wants to continue to try and come back together. “We’re working on it,” the Brooklyn-born Cease continued. “That’s something I would definitely want to do. I tried it for a year. Especially for Kim — I reached out for years. Everybody else is kinda in sync: I speak to Roc, Nino, D, [Money] L, everybody else is still kinda connected. The only one I wasn’t connected [with] was Kim. “I been swallowed my pride. Because as a family, when you know somebody for so long, you go through things. I didn’t think our situation would go this long and this far. As you get older, you start to appreciate that family value. It’s hard to try and do that in this day and age, when you this age. It takes a lot to build that kind of loyalty and trust. As days went by, I thought, ‘This is something Big would want.’ I hear it every day. I’m in the neighborhood and I’m outside. When they see Kim, they think of Big. When they see me, they think of Big. When they see D-Roc, they think of Big, and we’re all separated. I know Big would want us all eating together in one room. I’mma do my best to make that happen.” Cease-A-Leo insisted that despite his long estrangement from Kim, he still has love for her and is optimistic that they can at least talk to start the healing process. “We’re still talking to the same people,” he explained. “I guess people are starting to come around now and they are trying to make it happen. I speak to some of her close friends that I’m still close friends with and we working on it. It’s about that time,” he added about mending the divide between him and Kim. “It’s something that needs to happen. I don’t want no drama, especially with somebody I came up with. These are the things I think about.” Do you think it’s about time Junior M.A.F.I.A. reunited? Share your thoughts in the comments! Related Videos Happy Birthday Notorious B.I.G. Nas Says His Queensbridge ‘Hood Supports L.A. Laker Ron Artest

‘We are rooting for Ron all day long,’ rapper says of fellow Queens native. By Shaheem Reid Nas Photo: MTV News He’s so ‘hood, and his fans love for it: During halftime of the Los Angeles Lakers vs. Phoenix Suns Western Conference Finals game on Wednesday night, Laker Ron Artest told TNT, “We gotta play hard, like I played in the Queensbridge projects.” Fellow QB projects native Nas said he fully supports the man nicknamed Ron Ron, as does everyone from his neighborhood. “When I tell you man, the amount of love for Ron Artest, how insane it is from my ‘hood, from Queensbridge, it is a beautiful thing,” Nas told MTV News. “We all root for Ron. We’re all supporting Ron. I wasn’t with the Lakers before [they signed Ron]. I’m with the Lakers now for that. I love him. He plays a great part in the team. We are rooting for Ron all day long.” Artest had a breakout game on Wednesday, the second game of the series. The 30-year-old, who has a reputation for being a defensive specialist, had five rebounds and 18 points. “He just had to settle in and play like he’s used to playing,” Lakers star Kobe Bryant told ESPN . Artest, still in full uniform and standing in the middle of the locker room, said, “It’s about that time now. It’s about that time to just play, play basketball. “For some reason, you do things and they work and you go again to it,” Artest told the network. “Sometimes you sleep on the left side of the bed and wake up on the right, and when you go to sleep on the right and wake up on the left, your whole day is messed up. I just wanted to go back and sleep on the left side of the bed and wake up on the right.” The Lakers won 124-112 over the Suns and lead the series two games to none. Related Artists Nas

Jay-Z Said Earlier This Year He’s ‘Inspired’ By LeBron James

NBA fans are wondering if James will head to Jay’s New Jersey Nets when his Cleveland contract is up. By Rahman Dukes LeBron James and Jay-Z Photo: MTV News Now that LeBron James has received an early exit out of the NBA playoffs for the second straight year, fans wonder: Will the 2009-10 MVP hang up his Cavs jersey for a move to Brooklyn? It’s no mystery that King James and Jay-Z are bosom buddies and that Jay’s influence on the scoring champ could bring the kid from Akron, Ohio, to the Big Apple. Earlier this year at their “Two Kings” annual event during the NBA All-Star weekend in Dallas, Texas, Hov told a crowd of reporters that he was impressed at LeBron’s growth over the years. “I’m inspired by LeBron James at this moment, this season that he’s having,” Jay said. “I didn’t think that he would get any better. I remember when I first met him — he told me that he played point guard and I was like, ‘You’ll never make it in the NBA.’ I didn’t think he’d make it past half court — he’s 6-foot-8! But I didn’t know how gifted this young man would become. And he’s getting better.” “Growing up, I had many inspirations,” James added. “Many are the same Jay mentioned.” Jay-Z and LeBron share many similarities from the reigning positions in their respective careers down to the origins of their upbringing, as both superstars come from single-parent homes. “I think our biggest inspirations were our families,” Jay continued. “We didn’t have all of this stuff coming around the neighborhood. For us, it was just our mothers, our parents — our strong mothers.” Later in the Q&A session, a reporter asked LeBron if he ever thought about playing for the Dallas Mavericks “Uh …” LeBron paused, looking toward Jay for an answer. “That’s a little self-serving,” Hov shot back at the reporter. “What about the Nets?” another reporter asked. “Nah,” Jay calmly responded. Only time will tell if Jay is pulling our leg — he’s been known to do that. What team would you like to see LeBron James play for? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Jay-Z

Latest Update: Tiger Woods Has Slept With 120 Women

All throughout the 5-year marriage of Tiger Woods to his wife Elin Nordegren, Woods has confessed to have an affair with as many as 120 women. Behind his wife’s back, Woods was reported to have listed all the women he was involved with as part of his treatment for sex addiction. However, he failed to include one woman who is his neighbor’s 21-year-old daughter. The National Enquirer claims that Woods’ failure to include his neighbor’s daughter in the list finally caused his wife to pursue a divorce. Elin Nordegren decided for a divorce after knowing the publication of Woods’ alleged fling with Raychel Coudriet. Raychel Courdriet was reported to have known Woods since she was just 14 years old. Nordegren was so furious after learning the alleged one night stand and called her husband after his return at this year’s US masters. A source said that Nordgren was screaming so loudly that everyone at the table could hear what she was saying. Nordegren reportedly said: “This is the worst betrayal ever. I can’t believe you had sex with that girl in our neighborhood. That’s it! I’m divorcing you!” Meanwhile, Woods has denied having a fling with Raychel Coudriet, who is now 22 years old and a student at the University of Alabama.
