Season 3 Of Netflix’s ‘Dear White People’ To Premier This Summer

Continue reading here:

Source: Netflix / Netflix Media Center While most of us are impatiently waiting for the return of FX’s Atlanta and HBO’s Insecure —  two shows taking a year-long break — there is some good news on the horizon. Netflix has finally announced a premiere date of its show  Dear White People.  Dear White People is about the experiences of a group of black students who struggle through a myriad of interpersonal and racially charged conflicts on the fictional Ivy League campus, Winchester University. Season 2 ended with what seemed like the entire black community on campus showing up to protest Rikki Carter’s speech while Samantha (Logan Browning) and Lionel (DeRon Horton) searched for a secret society on the Winchester campus — Order of X. When Sam and Lionel get to the meeting spot, no one is there. They begin flipping out until a figure emerges from the shadows. It’s Giancarlo, the show’s narrator, and that’s where we’re left off. The show’s third season, which will be released in its entirety on August 2, will take place in the Spring instead of the Fall like the first two seasons. In Season 3, we should learn about what Giancarlo’s role in the Order of X, if he even has one, and what’s next for CoCo, Troy and the rest of the crew. Following Season 2, Justin Simien, the show’s creator, told EW that he won’t say anything about the Order of X, but loved including the narrator in the story. “Now whether or not they’re real and whether or not Giancarlo has anything to do with that, I won’t say, but I will say I was salivating at the thought of [putting] the narrator in the narrative,” he said. To announce the premiere date of  Dear White People,  some members of the cast weighed in on an age-old debate: sweet or savory grits. You can watch the video below:

According to Variety , Mock signed a three-year, multimillion-dollar pact with the streaming company, giving them exclusive rights to her TV series and a first-look option on feature film projects. The deal makes Mock the first out transgender woman to call major creative shots at a big content company. As part of Mock’s agreement, she will serve as an executive producer and director on Ryan Murphy ‘s forthcoming Netflix series Hollywood.  Murphy is the man behind such hit series as Glee, American Horror Story and Pose . Projects being developed include a college-set drama exploring a young trans woman’s life, a series about New Orleans after the abolishment of slavery and a reboot of a celebrated sitcom. They launched the company in 2018 as an avenue to bring diverse narratives to the entertainment industry. Through the series of podcasts that they will produce, they hope to cultivate dialogue surrounding important topics and give individuals from underrepresented groups the platform to share their stories. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to amplify voices that are too often ignored or silenced altogether, and through Spotify, we can share those stories with the world,” former first lady Michelle Obama said in a statement. “Our hope is that through compelling, inspirational storytelling, Higher Ground Audio will not only produce engaging podcasts, but help people connect emotionally and open up their minds—and their hearts.” Former president Barack Obama added that he hopes the podcast conversations will bring individuals closer together. The leadership team at Spotify is excited to collaborate with the Obamas. Executives believe they are amongst the most impactful and influential individuals in our country and the content they produce will be nothing short of compelling. “It is a privilege to be working with them to identify and share stories that will inspire our global audience,” said Dawn Ostroff , the company’s Chief Content Officer. “Connecting people with original and thoughtful creators — especially those with the ability to highlight underrepresented and indispensable narratives — is at the core of our mission.” Their podcasts are slated to be released next year. A Lil Positivity: Michael B. Jordan Presents The Central Park Five With Inaugural Roger Baldwin Courage Award

Source: John Lamparski / Getty The Central Park Five Receive The Roger Baldwin Courage Award Michael B. Jordan praised The Central Park Five — Yusef Salaam, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise — for their perseverance and courage during a luncheon in which the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California honored Netflix’s series about their case. The actor told the men on Friday that he cannot watch footage of the new series When They See Us without getting emotional and feeling like as a young black man he too could have faced a similar ordeal. “It’s dangerous in America when you’re living in a black body,” Jordan said. “The whole time that these men were incarcerated, they never changed their story. They insisted of their innocence even as they did their time.” Yusef Salaam shed a couple tears as he accepted an award on behalf of the series creator, Ava DuVernay. “I’m not ashamed to cry in front of you,” Salaam said after a moment of silence as he reflected on the fact that he and the other men were “just boys” when they were wrongfully convicted. “Our story is a story of an egregious miscarriage of justice.” Salaam and the rest of the Central Park Five were exonerated back in 2002 after being charged with the 1989 rape of a woman in New York’s Central Park. They received a standing ovation as they accepted the ACLU chapter’s inaugural Roger Baldwin Courage Award; Baldwin was one of the ACLU’s founders and its first executive director. Though this story and the outrage surrounding it is anything but new, DuVernay’s series has re-ignited a public outcry over how the case was handled. Shortly before the men accepted their award, Linda Fairstein–the Manhattan sex crimes prosecutor who observed the teenagers’ interrogation–was dropped by her book publisher in the face of the increasing criticism.

I Am Mother: Hilary Swank & Clara Rugaard Talk Perfect Humans, Childhood Lies & More

Originally posted here:

It’s been a minute since we’ve seen Hilary Swank on the big (or small) screen, but the Academy Award winner is back, and has taken her talents to Netflix. ‘I Am Mother’ is an intense thriller science fiction flick starring Ms. Swank, Clara Rugaard and Rose Byrne — who voices the character of Robot Mother. The movie tells the story of female robot in a bunker raising a teenager while giving the impression that the world above is not fit for human life. When a gunshot-wounded woman (played by Swank) arrives at the bunker door, she threatens that idea, calling into question everything the girl was told about the outside world. The girl then start to explore the robot’s nature and discovers the truth of Mother’s greater mission. We caught up with Hilary and Clara as they dished on all things digital, dark and deceptive. When asked about one thing they were taught as children that turned out to be a lie, Clara joked: “Well, the toothfairy! Santa Clause?”  Hilary gave a more in depth response, adding: “I think both of our families are very liberal and open-minded, so they didn’t tell us…” Clara: “…Lies to make us unravel ourselves. But I think parents do things to protect their children.” Hilary: “I think both our parents are like ‘We’re all one people’, ‘Treat people how you want to be treated. That sort of thing” Have you checked out ‘I Am Mother’ yet? Catch the full movie on Netflix, and check out what else the cast of the film had to say in the video above.

5 Light-Hearted Netflix Picks, Perfect For After You Watch Something A Little Too Heavy

View original post here:

Source: Kevin Winter / Getty 5 Netflix Picks That’ll Get You Out Of A Serious Slump The world is still reeling from what we all saw when we watched Ava DuVernay’s recently released masterpiece, When They See Us . The all-too-familiar story about the Central Park 5 was presented to us with more information, more emotion, and more grit than ever before–causing outrage, anger, and every other possible emotion for the poor young men who suffered the consequences of a crime they didn’t commit. When They See Us is more than necessary, but even so, it’s still hard to watch the reenactments of just how seriously these unassuming teenagers were taken advantage of and wrongfully punished. With that being said, sometimes the only thing we want after watching something so draining is something more light-hearted to take our mind off of the terrible things still going on in this world. Here are five picks to add to your Netflix queue for the next time you watch something painfully heavy and need some balance in your life. 1. Always Be My Maybe View this post on Instagram If you haven’t watched #AlwaysBeMyMaybe yet, I suggest you get to it tonight before all your co-workers discuss the big spoiler at work tomorrow! A post shared by Ali Wong (@aliwong) on Jun 2, 2019 at 10:20pm PDT “Childhood sweethearts have a falling out and don’t speak for 15 years, only reconnecting as adults when Sasha runs into Marcus in San Francisco. Although the old sparks are still there, the couple live in different worlds.” Always Be My Maybe is the epitome of a light-hearted, funny movie that just puts you in a good mood! If you just watched something heavy, or even if you’re just feeling down because of some other reason, this should be your number one pick. 2. Good Girls View this post on Instagram Some light gardening or a crime scene cover up? #GoodGirls A post shared by Good Girls (@nbcgoodgirls) on May 6, 2019 at 12:00pm PDT “When sisters Beth and Annie and their best friend Ruby become fed up with playing by the rules and not getting the respect they deserve, they band together to take control of their lives — by holding up a local grocery store.  In desperate need of money, the women plan the heist expecting to ease their financial burdens. But new to the game of crime, they get pulled in deeper than they ever imagined — and the only way out of this will be together.” You might think a show about moms-turned-criminals is pretty heavy, but I promise you, it’s not. Good Girls is the perfect mix of action and comedy and you’ll probably get through all of season 1 on Netflix in a night or two. 3. Dead To Me View this post on Instagram Did we just fall in love? (fun fact: that's dreamy actor @brandonoscott actually singing!) A post shared by Dead to Me (@deadtome) on May 18, 2019 at 10:30am PDT “Jen’s husband recently died in a hit-and-run, and the sardonic widow is determined to solve the crime. Optimistic free spirit Judy has recently suffered a tragic loss of her own. The ladies meet at a support group and, despite their polar-opposite personalities, become unlikely friends. As the women bond over bottles of wine and a shared affinity for “The Facts of Life,” Judy tries to shield Jen from a shocking secret that could destroy her life as she knows it.” Okay, so this isn’t the lightest show in the world, but the dark comedy will suck you in and be sure to get you out of even the lowest slump. 4. Jailbirds View this post on Instagram Congrats to @44_blue whose new series #jailbirds is officially the No. 1 Reality Show on @netflixuk, and No. 5 in their list of Most Watched Shows this week! #jailbirdsnetflix #numberone A post shared by Red Arrow Studios (@redarrowstudios) on May 23, 2019 at 10:31am PDT “Jailbirds is a documentary television series about inmates at the Sacramento County Jail.” This show is….crazy. If anything, the things you see going on in this jail will take your mind off of whatever you’ve got going on just from how wild these people and their antics are. 5. Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee View this post on Instagram Ladies and gentlemen, the one and only @realtracymorgan. A post shared by Jerry Seinfeld (@jerryseinfeld) on Jul 15, 2018 at 6:59am PDT “Comic Jerry Seinfeld is the creator, executive producer and host of this unique series that features vintage cars, funny conversations and a lot of caffeine. Jerry picks up each guest in a special car and heads to a cafe or restaurant. While the guests are typically comics, one episode features a drive around the White House grounds with President Barack Obama in a 1963 Chevy Corvette Stingray.” Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee   is the definition of light-hearted. With guests like President Obama and Tracy Morgan, there’s an episode for just about everybody–and there’s nothing better than seeing two comedians tell jokes back and forth for a good 30 minutes.
