High And Low: Early Fritz Lang, Late John Carpenter

This week’s new DVD releases  make it easy to put a little Highbrow dark chocolate in your Lowbrow crunchy peanut butter and enjoy a satisfying double feature . Whether you’re in the mood for serious German cinema (that mixes in some genre tropes) or ass-kicking science fiction (flavored with pungent political satire), there’s plenty for all tastes this week. HIGH: Fritz Lang: The Early Works (Kino Classics; $39.95 DVD) WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: This trio of early works by legendary German director Fritz Lang includes an adaptation of the classic opera Madame Butterfly and two films Lang co-wrote with his then-wife Thea von Harbou  that feature actor Rudolf Klein-Rogge — two key collaborators on Lang’s masterpiece, Metropolis . WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: 1919’s Harakiri , the Madame Butterfly adaptation, tells the story of a Japanese girl and her doomed romance with a European officer who abandons her.  The Wandering Shadow (1920), Lang and von Harbou’s first collaboration, follows a woman fleeing from a sex scandal and her eventual shot at redemption. Four Around the Woman , from 1921, sees a socialite falling victim to a crime…or is she involved in a blackmail plot? WHY IT’S SCHMANCY: Before he fled Nazi Germany, before M and Metropolis , even before Spies and the Dr. Mabuse movies, Fritz Lang was a successful filmmaker in Weimar-era Germany, when Expressionism was the happening thing. For scholars who wanted to explore the master’s entire oeuvre, however, many of Lang’s earliest films were difficult to access. Harakiri was one of four films Lang made in 1919, his first year as a director. And yes, the film has German actors performing in yellowface, but at least the filmmakers bothered to get genuine Japanese costumes and artifacts from the Hamburg Anthropological Museum. This DVD features restorations mastered from 35mm elements. WHY YOU SHOULD BUY IT:  Fritz Lang: The Early Works should appeal to more than just Lang completists. Anyone who cares about the roots of movies or just wants to check out silent cinema at its most vibrant should pick up this collection. LOW: They Live (Collector’s Edition) (Scream Factory; $19.93 DVD, $29.93 Blu-Ray) WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: Written (under the pseudonym “Frank Armitage”) and directed by John Carpenter; starring “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Keith David, Meg Foster. WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: A homeless drifter (Piper) finds a stash of special sunglasses that allow him to see the truth about the world around him: the rich and powerful are actually aliens who are destroying the planet and manipulating humans with subliminal messages in the media that induce people to consume mindlessly and to conform. WHY IT’S FUN: Released in 1988, Ronald Reagan’s last year in office, They Live is one of the most stinging satires of the Gipper’s era. Carpenter basically implied that yuppie-ism and the rest of the decade’s excesses were the product of cultural manipulation. (Okay, so extraterrestrials were behind the whole thing, but it’s an intriguing idea.) And if you’re not in the mood to look for political perspective, there are gross aliens and crazy shoot-outs and a fight scene between Piper and David that goes on…and on…and on…into cinema legend. WHY YOU SHOULD BUY IT (AGAIN): This new Collector’s Edition features great new goodies, including interviews with Foster (who’s still got Those Eyes), David and Carpenter, plus previously unseen footage from the original TV spots for the movie and a featurette on the visual style, scoring and stunts. (There’s also a Carpenter-Piper commentary track that’s been previously available.) Alonso Duralde has written about film for The Wrap, Salon and MSNBC.com. He also co-hosts the Linoleum Knife podcast and regularly appears on What the Flick?! (The Young Turks Network) .  He is a senior programmer for the Outfest Film Festival in Los Angeles and a pre-screener for the Sundance Film Festival. Taylor Lautner Speaks on Infidelity, Describes Kristen Stewart as "Fantastic"

How does Taylor Lautner feel about the cheating scandal that has surrounded co-stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson ? The actor doesn’t directly say in the latest issue of Cosmopolitan . But he basically does. Asked about infidelity and how he’d respond if a girlfriend ever cheated – we wonder from where the magazine got that question – Lautner responds: “To be honest, I’ve never been involved in any of those situations… [an answer] would be just a guess and a shot in the dark, and I don’t want to give that if I haven’t even been there myself.” Fair enough. But how does Taylor view Stewart? Any differently after her affair with Rupert Sanders was exposed? “Kristen is fantastic at everything she does,” the man behind Jacob Black says. “I’m always proud of her.” By all accounts, Stewart and Pattinson are an item again – and Lautner concludes that he absolutely see how they are making it work. “It depends on how long you were with that person. If it was a long, serious relationship, I think it’s quite easy to rekindle. I guess it depends on what damage has been done. There’s no ex out there who I’m not friends with today, and I’m extremely thankful for that.”

Making It Rain On Them Hoes Some More: Oprah’s Got Her OWN On The Huffington Post!

We’d say Oprah’s having a good year! She made it on the cover of Forbes , her OWN Network has recovered with record-breaking ratings, and she’s in cahoots with HBO for a new drama series. What more could she possibly achieve in 2012?? How about getting her OWN section on The Huffington Post? Oprah’s partnered with the news media monster and today was officially launch day. Here’s a snippet from her first open letter in the publication : It’s Launch Day. The beginning of our brand new special section of OWN, The Oprah Winfrey Network, on one of the most respected, energizing digital platforms worldwide, The Huffington Post. Thank you, Arianna, for allowing us to extend “the conversation” about empowerment and how we can grow and evolve ourselves to the truest expression of who we each are meant to be. This is my calling, my heart’s deepest desire: to fulfill my highest potential and to share what I know to help you do the same. One of my favorite quotes comes from Thought Leader and Wisdom Teacher Pierre Tielhard de Chardin: “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” My ultimate intention during the 25 year run of the Oprah show was to offer ways for us to see that we are all connected in our humanity and our desire for something greater… to know the depths of our spiritual selves. These are fragile, turbulent, challenging, exciting and often frightening times. More than ever we need to be in touch with our internal GPS — the inner voice that knows right from wrong that’s always guiding us True North. I want to use this fantastic web space to help point us there. Understanding that we are all more powerful than we know — that we are all connected to something bigger than ourselves — is the real conversation I want to have. In many ways, it is the only conversation, I believe, truly worth having. So let’s continue this conversation together here at the OWN section of The Huffington Post. Mad props go to Oprah on yet another huge achievement. Images via twitter/WENN

Maria Menounos And Giada De Laurentiis Make A Great Pair

Now here’s a lesbian fantasy I wasn’t expecting: Maria Menounos and the Food Network’s best celebrity chef cleavage Giada De Laurentiis . Of course, these pictures would be a lot more exciting if Maria wasn’t so covered up. Still, you can just see where it goes from here — Maria invites Giada to do a cooking segment on her show, they start to get frisky, end up having a messy chocolate fight, one thing leads to another, and the aprons come off. Great, now I’m hungry for both Greek and Italian. Shady Pennsylvania Republicans Pass New Law Requiring Women To Prove They Were Raped!

In order to get benefits, women in Pennsylvania will have to prove that they reported their assaulter they accused of rape . According to The Huffington Post : …the measure, proposed by five Republican state lawmakers, seeks to eliminate an increase in benefits if a child is conceived while a woman is covered under the Temporary Assistance To Needy Family program. A woman can seek an exception to this if the child is conceived as a result of rape. However, she must prove that she reported the incident to the authorities and gave the police her assaulter’s identity. The bill reads: Elimination of benefits under subsection (d) shall not apply to any child conceived as a result of rape or incest if the department: (1) receives a non-notarized, signed statement from the pregnant woman stating that she was a victim of rape or incest, as the case may be, and that she reported the crime, including the identity of the offender, if known, to a law enforcement agency having the requisite jurisdiction or, in the case of incest where a pregnant minor is the victim, to the county child protective service agency and stating the name of the law enforcement agency or child protective service agency to which the report was made and the date such report was made. According to the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network, 54 percent of rapes and assaults are not reported to the police. Last month, New Mexico’s Children, Youth and Families Department considered a similar measure that would have only exempted victims of “forcible rape” from having to file child support claims against an absent parent. Gov. Susana Martinez (R) quickly pulled the “forcible” language after the proposal sparked backlash. Once again, Republicans are showing their true colors when it comes to womens rights and government assistance. Images via facebook

High and Low: Two Films About Threesomes − ‘Sunday, Bloody Sunday’ & ‘Micki + Maude’

This week is about threesomes, in two movies that couldn’t be more different. Although both are the products of legendary filmmakers, one’s a restrained British drama while the other is a knockabout farce. (And if these movies put you in the mood for more ménage-a-cinema, check out 3 ,   Cloud Atlas co-director Tom Tykwer’s last film, a sexy and intelligent movie that got very little traction in this country.) HIGH: Sunday Bloody Sunday (The Criterion Collection; $29.95 DVD, $39.95 Blu-Ray) Who’s Responsible: Written by Penelope Gilliatt; directed by John Schlesinger; starring Peter Finch, Glenda Jackson and Murray Head. What’s It All About: Jewish physician Daniel (Finch) and divorcee Alex (Jackson) are both having a relationship with artist Bob (Head). Both Daniel and Alex are aware of the arrangement, and they put up with it because each does not want to lose the emotionally elusive Bob. Why It’s Schmancy: Sunday Bloody Sunday made history for its then-shocking kiss between Finch and Head — made all the more revolutionary in 1971 for Schlesinger’s refusal to treat it any differently than a heterosexual smooch. But what has made the film endure is the core honesty of the characters. (In an interview on the DVD, Head says that Schlesinger had once shared a boyfriend with a woman and that the film was a way for him to disentangle the experience.) Brilliantly acted, sensitively written and beautifully shot, Sunday Bloody Sunday is, as author William J. Mann notes on the DVD, Schlesinger’s masterpiece. W hy You Should Own It: Once again, The Criterion Collection packages its releases brilliantly. In addition to the extras with Head and Mann, there are excerpts from a 1975 AFI lecture given by Schlesinger, interviews with production designer Luciana Arrighi, cinematographer Billy Williams and Schlesinger’s longtime partner Michael Childers. An accompanying booklet includes a new essay as well as Gilliatt’s introduction to the published screenplay. The picture and sound are both exquisite as well, particularly in hi-def. LOW: Micki + Maude (Part of a four-film collection from Mill Creek Entertainment; $9.98 DVD) Who’s Responsible: Written by Jonathan Reynolds; directed by Blake Edwards; starring Dudley Moore , Ann Reinking, Amy Irving and Richard Mulligan. What’s It All About: Rob Salinger (Moore) really, really, really wants to have a baby, but his wife Micki (Ann Reinking), an assistant DA, seemingly has no interest in having children. When he falls for Maude (Irving), and she becomes pregnant, he prepares to marry her and divorce Micki — until it turns out that Micki is also with child. Not willing to cross Maude’s pro-wrestler dad, Rob marries her anyway, leading to the harried two-timer spending days with one wife and nights with the other. Cue the inevitable delivery room sequence, with both spouses in adjoining suites and Rob trying his best to keep the charade going. Why It’s Fun: The premise sounds like a turn-off, but Reynolds, Edwards and Moore manage to make Rob a sympathetic character: he really wants to be a father, and he really loves both of these women. So, through some miracle, this bigamist scoundrel comes off as a decent guy just trying to do the right thing. Few American filmmakers do door-slamming farce as well as the late, great Edwards, and the big hospital scene at the end ranks as a real comic gem. Micki + Maude isn’t often listed among the director’s greatest films, but it’s overdue for a reappraisal. Why You Should Buy It (Again): The film comes packaged in a very mixed bag of romantic comedies, ranging from the great ( Modern Romance ) to the forgettable ( There’s a Girl in My Soup , starring frequent Edwards collaborator Peter Sellers, and Hanky Panky ). The real reason to own this film is that much of Micki + Maude ’s comedy relies upon Edwards’ masterful use of the anamorphic screen, so this really isn’t a movie you want to watch on TV unless it’s letterboxed. Obama Beats Mittens Azz In Kiddie Online Election!

Too bad Mittens snubbed the kiddie town hall …he may have gotten more votes! Mitt can’t even fool the “little people” today! According to The Grio : It’s a landslide for President Barack Obama — at least among people too young to vote. Nickelodeon’s Linda Ellerbee said Monday that the president captured 65 percent of the vote to beat Republican Mitt Romney in the network’s “Kids Pick the President” vote. More than 520,000 people cast online ballots through the children’s network’s website over one week earlier this month. Since it began in 1988, the kids have presaged the adults’ vote all but once, when more youngsters voted for John Kerry over George W. Bush in 2004. Obama answered questions submitted by Nickelodeon viewers for a special earlier this month. Romney didn’t participate. Images via WENN

Candy Crowley, CNN Debate Moderator, Accused of Anti-Romney Bias

CNN has come under fire for moderator Candy Crowley’s performance at this week’s presidential debate , but the network brass is standing by its political correspondent. Candy Crowley Debate Highlights Some observers feel she was disproportionately harsh on Mitt Romney. The network doesn’t believe it, but worries about anything that “calls into question CNN’s impartiality.” CNN’s Managing Editor Mark Whitaker sent an email around the office praising Crowley and trying to blunt criticism that she was biased toward President Barack Obama. It reads: “Let’s start with a big round of applause for Candy Crowley for a superb job under the most difficult circumstances imaginable.” “She and her team had to select and sequence questions in a matter of hours, and then had to deal with a tricky format, nervous questioners, and aggressive debaters, all while shutting out pre-debate attempts to spin and intimidate her. She pulled it off masterfully. ” “The reviews on Candy’s performance have been overwhelmingly positive but Romney supporters are going after her on two points, no doubt because their man did not have as good a night as he had in Denver .” “On the legitimacy of Candy fact-checking Romney on Obama’s Rose Garden statement, it should be stressed that she was just stating a fact. Obama did talk about an act (or acts) of terror, no matter what you think he meant at the time.” “On why Obama got more time to speak, it should be noted that Candy and her commission producers tried to keep it even but that Obama went on longer largely because he speaks more slowly.” “We’re going to do a word count to see whether, as in Denver, Romney actually got more words in even if he talked for a shorter period of time.” You be the judge: Was Candy biased?   Yes No View Poll » Who won the debate Tuesday?   Barack Obama Mitt Romney View Poll » Who should win November 6?   Obama-Biden Romney-Ryan View Poll »
