Excerpt from:

C hanning Dungey , the ABC Entertainment Group president who pulled the plug on the Roseanne reboot, turned a page in her impressive career that includes becoming the first Black president at a major broadcast network. See Also: 7 Times Black TV Shows Got Political And We Loved It The online streaming giant Netflix hired Dungey as a vice president who will oversee original content, Hollywood Reporter said on Monday. “I’m drawn to the forward-thinking, risk-taking and creative culture at Netflix, and the deeply talented people there, especially Ted (Sarandos) and Cindy (Holland) , with whom I’m excited to partner on setting the strategy for original content,” said Dungey, who starts her new position in February. Dungey was expected to share the vice president of originals position with Holland and report directly to her. The Black executive will also have a direct line of communication to content chief Sarando. Joining Netflix also gives Dungey the opportunity to reconnect with Shonda Rhimes , the creator of “Scandal,” and “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris . Netflix ain't playing. https://t.co/GWp275l1Wc — Tre'vell Anderson (@TrevellAnderson) December 17, 2018 Dungey, who spent most of her career at ABC, created a lot of buzz from industry watchers who speculated about Dungey’s next move following her announced departure from the network. It came after she canceled Roseanne Barr ’s show over Barr’s racist comment about former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett . “Given that ABC, the place I’ve called home for nearly 15 years, represents the gold standard of traditional broadcast, it feels like the perfect next step for me to join Netflix, the unparalleled leader in streaming. I’m invigorated by the challenges ahead and the opportunity to forge new relationships, and excited for the very welcome reunion with incredible talent,” Dungey said. Speculation had focused on Dungey either joining one of two Netflix-based production companies: Rhimes’ Shondaland or the Obamas’ Higher Ground. She has the best of both worlds. Dungey’s new positon gives her greater oversight of both companies, according to Hollywood Reporter. “We’re delighted to be adding Channing’s expertise, leadership and deep experience to Netflix, and I look forward to partnering with her as we continue to grow and evolve our global network. I have been a fan of her character and approach from our early days as executives,” Holland commented. Lindsey Nicholson to Appear on Teen Mom 2: Is She Replacing a Fired Cast Member?

If you’re a longtime fan of the Teen Mom franchise, you may remember the name Lindsey Nicholson. Lyndsey was a fan favorite on 16 and Pregnant , but she was passed over for the majors and never made the leap to Teen Mom fame. Prior to the casting of Briana DeJesus , MTV and Viacom reached out to several former 16 and Pregnant stars. When they reached their final decision, Lindsey and others, like Mackenzie McKee were left to assume they didn’t get the gig. Now that the network went outside of the franchise to cast Bristol Palin and Cheyenne Floyd on Teen Mom OG , it looks like Lindsey will never get a chance to return to the series full-time. She is, however, scheduled to make an appearance on Teen Mom 2 this season. Lindsey has remained friends with Kailyn Lowry, and she was on hand for the launch of Lowry’s Pothead haircare line last week. In a recent interview with Radar Online, Lindsey confirmed that the event was filmed for the show. “We were all there,” she said of Lowry’s Pothead hair care in NYC. “It was mostly following up on something they’re going to put in Kail’s season.” The news that Lindsey was once again filming with MTV led to rumors that she would be returning to the franchise, possibly to replace a departing TM2 cast member. That’s not the case, however, which is a shame — as Lindsey has quite a story to tell. Nicholson gave birth to twins Jackson and Paisley when she was just 29 weeks pregnant, and the boys spent several weeks in the NICU. “No one talks about it,” she told Radar. “It is so hard. My goal in the next few years … I would love to be able to go and speak and share our story. “I was one of the girls they reached out to,” Nicholson explains of her experience with almost getting cast in TM2. “When they called we weren’t even pregnant. I was working at a dentist office. My life was so boring.  According to Lindsey, passing her over is the network’s loss. “But they missed out everything we went through with the twins,” she says. Hopefully, we’ll get to hear more of Lindsey’s story soon. View Slideshow: 16 and Pregnant Stars: Where Are They Now?

Effect On Black People Is Overlooked In Trump’s Latest Effort To Punish Immigrants

See the article here:

T he overwhelming narrative surrounding immigration in the U.S. has long centered on Latinos, Hispanics and Central Americans. But in addition to those groups, immigrants from majority Black countries will also be left vulnerable to tougher immigration regulations that could be approved soon. A proposed rule from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), called “Inadmissibility on Public Charge Grounds,” was the Trump administration’s latest attempt to rig immigration policy in favor of English speakers whose earning power was near or on a par with that of American citizens. Monday was the end of a three-month period accepting “public comments” which DHS was expected to use to help reach its final decision on the rule. 'You could either feed your kids or stay in America but you can't do both.' — This new Trump rule targets immigrants legally in the U.S. The Trump admin's comment period on ‘public charge’ ends this Monday, Dec 10. You can submit a comment here: https://t.co/5TiJONYrfw pic.twitter.com/S91dmZVg83 — NowThis (@nowthisnews) December 8, 2018 According to the UndocuBlack Network , a nonprofit organization advocating for Black immigrants , the new rule would fall “in line with America’s racist history of preventing Black, Brown and Indigenous people from accessing resources and basic needs.” READ MORE: Diversity Visa Program Under Fire Helps Blacks Too Translated from legalese jargon, “public charge” is a “term used by U.S. immigration officials to refer to a person who is considered primarily dependent on the government for subsistence, as demonstrated by either receipt of public cash assistance for income maintenance or institutionalization for long-term care at government expense,” according to the National Immigration Law Center . “Where this consideration applies, an immigrant who is found to be ‘likely . . . to become a public charge’ may be denied admission to the U.S. or lawful permanent resident status.”) That means that Trump and his administration think immigrants entering the U.S. are intentionally looking to live off government benefits, such as “the receipt of public cash assistance for income maintenance or institutionalization for long-term care at government expense,” according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services agency. The Public Charge rule would restrict immigrant families from using essential public services including non-emergency Medicaid, SNAP, Medicare Part D, and housing assistance. Comment by 12/10 at  https://t.co/fVTNIj3lgZ pic.twitter.com/DCe0Ra35gp — CCDPH (@CookCoHealth) December 4, 2018 The problem with that logic was that “[u]ndocumented immigrants, including DACA holders, are ineligible to receive most federal public benefits, including means-tested benefits such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, sometimes referred to as food stamps), regular Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families,” according to the National Immigration Forum . As of Monday, “refugees, asylees, and amnestied illegal aliens are exempt from the public charge requirement,” according to the Federation for American Immigration Reform . However, “[u]ndocumented immigrants may be eligible for a handful of benefits that are deemed necessary to protect life or guarantee safety in dire situations, such as emergency Medicaid, access to treatment in hospital emergency rooms, or access to healthcare and nutrition programs under the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).” And that’s what has Trump’s white nationalist administration so worried. “The regulation also favors immigrants who speak the English language and who have  earnings at or above 250 percent of the federal poverty level, which is a whopping  $63,000 for a family of four,” UndocuBlack Network wrote on its website. That was a near impossible standard to meet for immigrants, let alone many American citizens, according to a list of states’ median income for four-person families that was compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau. Commission majority submitted formal comment urging @DHSgov to reconsider its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking regarding inadmissibility to U.S. on public charge grounds. Proposed rule communicates government animus against multiple marginalized communities https://t.co/SsyulJvdSQ pic.twitter.com/IUNbUWkpVo — USCCR (@USCCRgov) December 10, 2018 One positive sign for Black immigrants if the new rule goes into effect was that “compared with other immigrant groups, blacks are more likely to be U.S. citizens or to be proficient English speakers,” Pew Research Center found earlier this year. “Much of the recent growth in the foreign-born black population has been fueled by African migration,” Pew wrote, and “black immigrants from Africa are more likely than Americans overall to have a college degree or higher.” READ MORE:  Obama’s Legacy Of Hope For The Caribbean But the Caribbean remained the most likely point of origin for Black immigrants in the U.S., including Haiti, where more than 650,000 people living in the U.S. were from. They do, however, help pay for the public benefits American citizens receive, though, the Huffington Post reported last year. “In reality, immigrants typically pay far more in taxes than they receive in benefits. And that includes undocumented immigrants,” HuffPost wrote. “Not only do they simply not qualify for many benefits, but undocumented immigrants also tend to keep a low profile and may not seek benefits they possibly could legitimately receive as a result. However, every year millions of undocumented immigrants not only do pay taxes, they even file their tax returns.” A4: Public charge creates an anxious and unhealthy environment for young children. #NoToPublicCharge #ProtectFamilies pic.twitter.com/biVrYvBJ33 — APIAHF Says #NoToPublicCharge (@APIAHF) December 3, 2018 All of which makes it look like the Trump administration is trying to cut off its own nose just to spite its face and prove some null talking point to bolster the president’s white nationalist rhetoric while burying the actual truth. Or, as the UndocuBlack Network put it , “[a]nyone interested in challenging the war on poor people must fight for programs that support Black immigrants’ ability to access a better standard of living.” SEE ALSO: US Immigration Border Policy Is Literally Killing People What Tighter Border Enforcement Means For Black Immigrants [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3838134″ overlay=”true”]

Rest In Peace: ‘Power’ Cast Reacts As Beloved Crew Member Dies On Set

Source: Mike Pont / Getty The #PowerTV team is taking some time to mourn after one of their own suffered a fatal incident on set early Monday, December 10. Producers have reportedly stopped production out of respect for the family and crew.  Page Six reports: “The Starz drama Power  shut down production after a car crash at a Brooklyn shooting location killed a longtime crewmember early Monday. Filming for the show’s sixth season was postponed out of respect for the family of Pedro Jimenez , 63, and to allow cast and crew time to grieve, a Starz spokeswoman told The Post.” Jimenez was a parking production assistant who’d reportedly been working on the set since 2014. According to the site, he was killed when a coworker ran into him as he set up traffic cones for a shoot on Douglas Street in Cobble Hill. Members of the cast are speaking out as news of their team member’s death circulates. From Naturi Naughton : “Truly shocked and saddened! Losing one of our own really hit home today! Tomorrow is not promised y’all! Live fully today! My thoughts and prayers are with the Jimenez family. #speechless #prayersUP.” From Omari Hardwick : “I sit next to my family as I type this post of a day gone the worst. Started as a regular ole work day for everyone of us. Ironically for me the night prior saw me as part of the special CNN Heroes annual gala honoring local yet worldwide heroes. I found myself presenting to 1 of those heroes. And now, as the man who was given the challenge of quarterbacking this very formidable team into 6 successful seasons of play, I find myself presenting along with my colleagues & producers this tragic tragic news of one of our work family members losing his life on the job. Unless under a rock ….all of you who have rooted for me & this show…..have heard me pay homage to our crew over & over again. I was born a team player & will leave this earth as one. On this “just another work day,” we all were & are faced with the harshest of realities that a wife has lost her husband, children their father & friends….their beautiful hardworking GRACIOUS Pedro. As the QB of this show & as the face of the network, this has of course affected me. But as a person in communication & exchange of spirit as much as I was with good ole Pedro…I’m rocked.” From 50 Cent : “I just learned we lost Pedro Jimenez, a member of the Power production team early this morning. My prayers and condolences are with the entire Jimenez family. From Joseph Sikora : “Pedro Jimenez, a member of the POWER family, lost his life today. Thank you for always having a smile and bringing so much love with you to set. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.” From Lala Anthony : “Thank you Omari for these much needed words today. On behalf of myself and my Power family…prayers and love to our GRACIOUS Pedro and the Jimenez family; it’s a sad day. Love more. Live more. Laugh more. Rest In Heaven Dear Pedro.” See the cast’s full statements on the flip.  Prayers to Pedro Jimenez’s family and loved ones…may he rest in peace.

Married at First Sight Season 8: Meet the Newlyweds!

New year. New set of single people who have somehow agreed to exchange vows with someone to whom they were introduced mere months prior. Indeed, Married at First Sight Season 8 premieres on January 1 at 10/9pm on Lifetime and the network has released promotional photos of all four couples at the center of this controversial reality series. Which will defy the odds and remain together, despite the unusual way in which they met? And which will go the way of this Season 7 couple and file for divorce shortly after filming ends? We don’t know yet. But we do know a little bit about each pairing. Let’s get to know them a bit better, shall we? Let’s start with  Will Guess and Jasmine McGriff : McGriff, is 29 years old and was was raised in a traditional household with very traditional gender roles. According to Lifetime, she hails from a tight family; she owns her own home; she and is on the verge of a big work promotion. Guess is q 37-year old who was raised by his mother. He thinks marriage is the overall goal for one to achieve in life — and he’s emotionally, financially and mentally prepared to find his partner. Will is one of the few single friends among his peer group, yet he enjoys spending time with the married twosome because he gains insight into what’s ahead for him. And now for  Luke Cuccurullo and Kate Sisk : Cuccurullo’s parents got divorced when he was just a child. Although he remains close with his mom, he rarely talks to his dad. Due to his upbringing, the engineer tells Lifetime he determined to find “The One.” Oh, and he’s an avid cook and also loves going outside of his comfort zone. As for Sisk? She comes from a tight-knit family with two brothers — and her parents divorced just last year. Still healing from this split, Sisk is pessimistic about love… but remains hopeful that she’ll find the right person for her at some point. Maybe now! And now for  Keith Dewar and Kristine Killingsworth : Keith was mainly raised mainly by his grandmother and is considered a gentleman who yearns to find a partner that is his equal, someone willing to compromise and support him. Dewar is a patient-care technician who specializes in kidney dialysis and adores being a rock for his sick patients. Killingsworth’s parents, meanwhile, have been married for more than 35 years, through many ups and just as many downs. She’s a real estate agent and she hopes to find the “gold standard,” just her parents managed to do. Killingsworth says she’s very comfortable in her own skin and can’t wait to find a man who is similar. And this brings us to  AJ Vollmoeller and Stephanie Sersen : Vollmoeller is a New York native and also an only child; his parents recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this year after meeting in high school. He works as the President and CEO of Future Force Talent Connection and has mostly accomplished his professional goals. However, he’s eager to find a partner to share in his success. An avid foodie and adrenaline junkie, Vollmoeller failed to accomplish this task online and is taking a chance with Married at First Sight after being recommended by a friend. For her part, Sersen is similarly inspired by her parents’ three-decade-long marriage and wants to find a man like her dad. At 35 years old, she’s ready to settle down and start a family. This is someone who loves to travel and hopes she finds a soulmate with whom she can share experiences the globe.
