Harper advisor calls for assassination of Wikileaks director

In a shockingly flippant comment to a Canadian television news anchor Evan Solomon of the CBC News Network on live TV, Tom Flanagan, a senior advisor and strategist to the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper today called for the assassination of Wikileaks director Julian Assange . It is believed to be the first ever televised “fatwa” since the edict by the Iranian leadership of the late Ayatollah Khomeini against British writer Salman Rushdie in February 1989. Amazingly, although news anchor Solomon afforded Flanagan the opportunity to retract his statement, Flanagan balked at doing so and instead reiterated that U.S. President should put out a “contract” on Assange or use “a drone” and that he would not be unhappy if Assange “disappeared.” Flanagan who is a trusted member of PM Harper's inner circle of Tory strategists joins Sarah Palin in calling for the death of the Wikileaks director as retribution for the website's release of confidential diplomatic and intelligence “chatter” this week. added by: Miguel_Teixeira

Bella Thorne Poised To ‘Shake It Up’ On Disney Channel

Actress, dubbed ‘the new Miley Cyrus,’ wears out her dancing shoes. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Matt Elias Bella Thorne Photo: MTV News Following in the footsteps of Miley and Selena, there’s a new starlet poised for Disney-backed stardom: Bella Thorne, star of “Shake It Up.” Thorne is the newest young Hollywood starlet to helm her own show on the network, and many are saying she’s got the chops that will launch her into the entertainment stratosphere, just like her “Hannah Montana” predecessor. MTV News caught up with the budding household name, who broke down the premise behind “Shake It Up” and chatted about what it’s like being the latest face on the Disney roster. ” ‘Shake It Up’ is about two best friends, CeCe Jones and Rocky Blue, and they want to live their dreams as professional dancers on a TV show called ‘Shake It Up Chicago,’ ” Thorne explained. “Basically, it’s about following your dreams and their journeys and school and friends and everything else.” Thorne, who scored the part after auditioning last fall, said she had to go through a slew of meetings before winning the role. She also sacrificed a beloved item in her wardrobe hoofing it for the part. “I have these new ballet flats — they’re ruined,” Thorne complained good-naturedly. “Yup, they’re completely ruined from all the dancing we went through.” Like her character, Thorne is tasked with busting moves for her dream job. However, despite landing such a rigorously dance-centric gig, she was a newcomer to mastering choreography on a professional level. “I’ve only been dancing since I got ‘Shake It Up,’ ” she revealed. “I mean, I’ve been dancing all my life, but I never did any classes or anything like that. So [I learned] just watching shows and freestyling.” For Thorne, picking up a few new steps here and there isn’t a problem, since she’s carved a place for herself as part of the Disney family — an entertainment powerhouse she’s proud to call home. “It feels amazing,” she gushed. “You can’t really describe the feeling, because I’m so happy and blessed to be here, and the rest of our talented cast have worked so hard on ‘Shake It Up.’ And we all put all of our heart and soul into every episode, and we just hope that people like it just as much as we do.” Are you a fan of Disney star Bella Thorne? Partisan Inconsistency: In Close Congressional Races, AP Gives Two Paragraphs to GOP Win in IL-08, 14 to Dem in CA-11

I've noted an interesting disparity in how the Associated Press, the so-called Essential Global News Network, has covered Democratic and Republican congressional victories in situations where the counting has gone on well past Election Day. Let's contrast the amount of ink and bandwidth devoted to Republican Joe Walsh's victory over incumbent Democrat Melissa Bean in Illinois compared to the coverage accorded California Democrat Jerry McNerney in his victory over the GOP's David Harmer. First, in Walsh vs. Bean, the following is the only item that comes up in a search on Ms. Bean's name at the AP's main site: read more

Zodiac actor placed on terror list for opposing oil drilling method

Indie actor Mark Ruffalo says he found himself on the Pennsylvania Homeland Security office's terror watch list for organizing screening of an oil-drilling documentary. According to the World Entertainment News Network, Ruffalo — who has starred in such films as The Kids Are All Right, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Zodiac — told GQ magazine he found it “pretty f–cking funny” that he would be suspected of terrorism for raising the alarm about what many say is an environmentally harmful way of drilling for oil and gas. Ruffalo has been promoting GasLand, a documentary that focuses on hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking.” It's a process of drilling for oil and gas that involves pumping large amounts of water into a well to crack the rock under the ground, releasing the oil or gas. As energy prices rise and fossil fuels become scarcer, the practice has been growing in popularity. The trailer for GasLand states that at least six states have documented some 1,000 incidents of groundwater pollution related to fracking. The documentary interviews people who say they suffered from neurological diseases and other conditions as a result of contaminated water. The Pennsylvania Office of Homeland Security appears to be at least as heavily focused on anti-oil and gas documentaries as it is on international terrorism. In October, it was revealed that the department had declared the documentary Coal Country to be a “potential catalyst for inspiring 'direct action' protests or even sabotage against facilities, machinery, and/or corporate headquarters.” A Pennsylvania activist Web site reported earlier this month that the department has been monitoring the Twitter feeds of known anti-war activists. The following trailer for GasLand was uploaded to YouTube on May 5, 2010. added by: samantha420

NBC Names Ground Zero Mosque Developer a ‘Person of the Year’

NBC has announced that it has named the developer of the controversial Islamic prayer center near Ground Zero, Sharif el-Gamal, one of the network’s “People of the Year.” El-Gamal will sit down for an interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer on Thanksgiving night. The prayer center, known as Park51, has sparked outrage and massive protests from people who say that building a mosque so close to the site of the World Trade Center attacks is disrespectful to 9/11 victims and their families. NBC’s previous coverage of Park51 has sometimes come off as insensitive to the people who object to the prayer center’s construction. Last August, NBC anchor Mika Brzezinski referred to Park51 opponents as people “who don’t care about the Constitution.” read more

Andrew Garfield Is The Actor We’re Most Thankful For In 2010

His Oscar-worthy turn in ‘The Social Network,’ ‘Spider-Man’ casting and overall humility have endeared the young actor to MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Andrew Garfield Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic He plastered an all-too-human face on the backstabby founding of Facebook in “The Social Network” and just might win an Oscar for his troubles. He healed our broken geeky hearts when he assumed the role of Peter Parker after the “Spider-Man” franchise collapsed unexpectedly in January. And let’s not forget his powerful performance as a cloned human desperate to prove he has in a soul in the underrated adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s Booker Prize-winning novel “Never Let Me Go.” For all of these reasons — as well as for being such a damn nice fellow — Andrew Garfield is the man MTV News is most thankful for in 2010. Just don’t tell that to him. Humble as ever despite talk of awards-season love and the prospect of taking on one of pop culture’s most beloved superheroes, Garfield has trouble accepting the fact that he’s deserving of all the hype. A conversation with him veers through talk of insecurities, I-better-not-screw-this-up fears and the self-consciously naive hope that his life isn’t about to change forever. He is, in other words, an utterly charming guy, and we can’t wait to see what he brings to the screen in 2011. MTV : So every year, we look back at the film folks we’re truly thankful for, and this year, you’re the man we’re most thankful for. Congrats! Andrew Garfield : Wow, that’s stupid. That’s very, very silly. I guess if I make you feel better about yourselves, that makes sense. MTV : We’re very insecure. Garfield : No, I’m very insecure! I’m incredibly insecure. That’s crazy, but it’s very flattering. MTV : Do you have a speech prepared for the occasion? Garfield : Yes, I would like to, first and foremost, thank you for inflating my ego. I really only want to thank you. MTV : It’s been quite a year for you, with “Never Let Me Go” and then “Social Network” and then you obviously landed “Spider-Man.” Does 2010 feel like a landmark year for you? Garfield : I feel incredibly lucky that I’ve had the good fortune to work with people and on projects I care about. From “Never Let Me Go” to “I’m Here,” a short film I did with Spike Jonze, to the David Fincher thing, “The Social Network,” with all the casts and crews — I don’t take that lightly. It’s inspiring, and you feed off it. In that way, I’m incredibly happy. And moving on to the next job I’m going to be shooting, being given that responsibility, I see it as a real gift. It’s a character — I’m talking about the Spider-person — I’ve known for my whole life. He’s been a presence in my upbringing and a very symbolic figure and force of manhood and bravery and a moral compass. All of those things that have shaped me as a person, he’s been very much involved in. MTV : It seems like maybe you were fairly well known in the U.K., but until recently, not many people in the U.S. knew who you were. How has your day-to-day life changed, if at all? Garfield : It hasn’t changed yet. I say “yet” as if that will happen. Maybe naively, I think my life is going to stay the same in terms of anonymity. I feel it’s so important to have a normal life, to be able to walk down a city street and have a normal human experience in order to reflect that in the work. Otherwise, you can’t relate. It’s so funny how actors are perceived. It’s craziness. Even the way I got when I met Doc Brown the other day. What’s his name? MTV : Christopher Lloyd from “Back to the Future”? Garfield : Yeah, I met Christopher Lloyd. I lost my mind. I turned into a schoolgirl. I started screaming in his face. I went insane. But I guess because his performances had such a profound effect on me, it was like meeting a hero. I personally haven’t been on the receiving end of that, thankfully. MTV : Well, people aren’t probably walking around shouting at you, “Hey, Eduardo,” your character from “Social Network,” but you’ll probably be getting a lot of, “Hey, Peter Parker!” Garfield : Unless they let me play Peter Parker with a disguise so no one sees my face. I’ll play him with a beard and mustache. MTV : Maybe a little “Benjamin Button”-style CGI facial work … Garfield : Yeah, they could face-replace me, and then it’ll just be my body. People will recognize some other, better actor’s face. MTV : You should bring that up with Sony. Garfield : You think they’ll like it? MTV : Totally. … I mean, not a chance. Anyway, has there been a surreal moment from 2010 that kind of encapsulates what a crazy year it’s been for you? Garfield : I did have a strange moment when I was told I was going to play this role. I was like, “Oh, wow, this is something I’ve wanted to do ever since I was a kid.” There was a moment of total boyish excitement. It was this cosmic convergence where I was in the past, present and future all at once. In the future, I was thinking about my nephews that are going to have an uncle who’s Spider-Man, but then I thought that could be bad because kids can bully you for any reason, and it’s like, “Where’s your uncle now when I’m beating the sh– out of you?” I’ll have to go to their school a lot, but by that time I’ll be really old and fat and no one will believe I was Spider-Man. Then I was thinking about the past and when I was first shown a “Spider-Man” comic. It inspired me because I was one of those people who felt stronger on the inside than they looked on the outside. And then in the present moment, I was thinking this moment is something I’ll never forget. Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it’s about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. Enjoy exclusive interviews with our winners all week long. Ed Schultz: Palin is Racist for Criticizing the Obamas’ Connection to Rev. Wright

After spending much of his week accusing Rush Limbaugh of racism, Ed Schultz on Friday made the same absurd claim about former Alaska governor Sarah Palin. Following in the footsteps of others on his network as well as the liberal blogosphere, the MSNBCer said it was racist for Palin to refer to comments Michelle Obama made in 2008 about never having been proud of her country before her husband started winning primaries. It was also racist of Palin to mention in her book the Obamas' connection to Rev. Jeremiah Wright (video follows with transcript and commentary): read more

‘American Idol’ Moving To New Night

The Fox hit will air on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning January 19. By Mawuse Ziegbe Photo: FOX As its tenth season nears, “American Idol” continues to shake things up. Fox announced on Friday that in January the amateur-talent juggernaut will now air on Wednesdays and Thursdays after launching from a Tuesday-night slot for years. According to the network’s 2010 to 2011 midseason schedule, Tuesdays will lead with “Glee” at 8 p.m., followed by “Raising Hope” and a new sitcom “Mixed Signals.” The lineup change is the latest in a slew of revamps to the Fox hit. The buzzed-about judges’ panel was completely overhauled and now includes Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler alongside “Idol” veteran Randy Jackson . The minimum age limit was also lowered to 15. In addition, the show will no longer whittle down the finalists from 24 to 12, and instead just introduce a dozen singers for fans to vote for. Tenth-season hopefuls will also be tasked with crafting memorable visuals as part of a brand new music video competition. Lythoe has dished on how Tyler and Lopez are approaching their new gigs, praising them for their serious take on the job. He also added that longtime critic Jackson is stepping up his game and providing pithy insight. “Randy is pulling his weight,” Lythgoe said recently . “He really has stepped up. He’s essentially come out of himself. He’s enjoying being in that position.” Lopez has also said that next season with show will be more forgiving with auditioners, and try not to let panicky nerves get in the way of recognizing a talented hopeful. “I don’t want to let anybody really great [not make it through] because they’re nervous, and not get to see what they could have did,” Lopez said in September . “They’re going to come in here and be a little bit nervous in the beginning, and then you realize, ‘Wow, that person is really talented.’ So we work them a little bit more than maybe you’ve seen in the past. We’ve given them more of a chance.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page, where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
