By Jocelyn Vena Oprah Winfrey Photo: Soul Brother/ FilmMagic According to a new report, talk-show maven and pop culture tour de force Oprah Winfrey is considering a dramatic acting role. Deadline Hollywood reports that Winfrey is in talks to star in an HBO Films adaptation of Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Ruined.” Winfrey and Kate Forte will act as executive producers for the film, with the playwright adapting the script. The story follows Mama Nadi, a madam at a brothel in war-torn Congo. Nadi tries to keep herself and her women from getting into trouble with the government and rebel armies. Winfrey recently made a cameo on “30 Rock.” She has taken on dramatic roles in the past, including 1998’s “Beloved,” directed by Jonathan Demme, and Steven Spielberg’s 1985 drama “The Color Purple.” Winfrey is also attached to show her more comic side in a Michael Patrick King (“Sex and the City”) flick about the world of home shopping networks . Winfrey has also worked in film behind the scenes. She was one of the forces behind “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” and is working with HBO on an adaptation of “America: In the King Years,” based on the Taylor Branch books about Martin Luther King Jr. Winfrey will wrap up her 25-year run as the host of her talk show in September 2011 and will launch her new network, OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, in January 2011. “I love this show. This show has been my life. And I love it enough to know when it’s time to say goodbye,” she said when she announced the end of her talk-show run. “Twenty-five years feels right in my bones, and it feels right in my spirit. It’s the perfect number — the exact right time. So I hope that you will take this 18-month ride with me right through to the final show.”

China #1, United States #2? 25 Facts That Prove The Transition Is Really Happening

On a recent episode of The Office, Michael Scott spent much of the show bemoaning the fact that China could soon become the number one economic superpower. Of course by the end of the episode everyone had concluded that the United States would continue to be number one indefinitely, but in the real world things are not so simple. Sadly, the cold, hard facts reveal that China is on the rise and the United States is experiencing a dramatic economic decline. The world is changing and China is projected to become the largest economy in the world at some point during the next decade. Americans have been taught from birth that “the U.S. is number one”, but the transition is really happening. China is passing the United States even in quite a few high tech industries and in many areas of scientific research. The numbers that you are going to read below are absolutely staggering. It is getting really hard to deny that the Chinese are wiping the floor with us economically. In fact, they are beating us so badly that it is hard to put into words. added by: Revelation1217

US Declares Wikileaks Off-Limits To Government Researchers

The US government is clamping down on scientists’ ability to discuss and surf freely as part of its response to the release of classified cables by Wikileaks. Today at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, moderators who run an environmental science discussion group called Coral-List have begun deleting any posts that make reference to Wikileak documents( http://coral.aoml.noaa.gov/pipermail/coral-list/2010-December/009371.html ). On Friday, at Fermilab in Chicago, access to Wikileaks was blocked by the IT department( http://www.fnal.gov/pub/today/archive_2010/today10-12-03.html ) to “help prevent someone from inadvertently downloading a classified document to a machine on our network” The same day at NASA, employees were told not to use their computers to download information from Wikileaks( http://www.nasawatch.com/archives/2010/12/heads-up-nasa-h.html ). Steven Aftergood of the Federation for American Scientists says the actions appear intended to respond to an Office of Management and Budget memo( http://voices.washingtonpost.com/federal-eye/2010/12/wikileaks_off-limits_to_una… ) that reminds agencies that bringing classified information onto a non-classified system may breach agency regulations. But, he adds, many agencies are going further than they have to by blocking sites entirely. He says that doesn’t make sense when much of the information is already freely available from newspapers such as The New York TImes and The Guardian. “The government has locked itself into a contradictory position that threatens mission performance,” – the idea that government employees should do the best job they can with the information they can obtain, he says. Contrary to what US scientists may have understood from the government’s behavior, it is not a crime for scientists to read classified information that has entered the public domain as long as they have no intent to damage national security by doing so, Aftergood says. But scientists at national labs are at risk of breaking workplace regulations if they load classified information onto their government computer. Aftergood says that the classified cables on wikileaks are not primarily a scientific resource, but they do contain social and geographical data that is of interest to some researchers, he says. Those most likely to be affected by the bans are foreign policy researchers and analysts. In his Secrecy newsletter( http://www.fas.org/blog/secrecy/2010/12/crs_block.html ) Aftergood discusses blocks on Wikileaks at the Library of Congress and comments that researchers for the Congressional Research Service( http://blogs.loc.gov/loc/2010/12/why-the-library-of-congress-is-blocking-wikilea… ), which is part of the Library, may be left unable to compete with other analysts as a result of their inability to read information that everyone else can access. added by: toyotabedzrock

Portia de Rossi Turns Down Dancing With the Stars; Same-Sex Partner Idea Shelved For Now

Dancing With The Stars producers aren’t quite ready fora same-sex couple on the ballroom floor after Portia de Rossi didn’t pan out, according to reports. “If Portia agreed, this would have been a done deal,” an ABC insider says . Ellen DeGeneres’ actress wife “was the only star that really could have pulled this off without completely offending the program’s conservative viewers.” Ellen still dances a lot on her show, at least . Portia was rumored to be going Dancing next year, but turned down overtures from the network for unknown reasons. As a result, the show “isn’t in a rush to have a same-sex dancing couple just to get attention and publicity.” The show has a soft spot for stunt casting – Kate Gosselin and Bristol Palin are just the newest, best examples – but DWTS isn’t out to push the envelope. “With all the debate going on about Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell now, this would have been the perfect time to do this,” one Hollywood casting director said. “Yet, Dancing With the Stars has never been about pushing the envelope. It’s a huge hit precisely because it doesn’t make anyone uncomfortable.” Some sources feel the backlash over Palin’s surprising finals run on the show caught producers by surprise and they’re looking to avoid conflict. “After Bristol, I predict it will be the most boring stars next season,” an insider says. “When you have a hit this big, everyone is scared to mess it up.” What do you think of same-sex DWTS partners?

Even Injury Can’t Keep Justin Timberlake From His Movieline Double Date with Andrew Garfield

Steady yourselves, people of Earth: Justin Timberlake is on crutches. But as the singer-actor-pop demigod told me as he hobbled in for an in-depth chat alongside Social Network co-star/future Spider-Man Andrew Garfield last night, his injured leg may or may not be cause for concern — and thankfully, it didn’t stop him from making our late-night rendezvous.

Grayson: GOP’s Primary Reason For Tax Cuts Is To Benefit Right-Wing Pundits

I love Grayson because he does not hold back…..He was the GOP's number one target in the last election and here is a example of why they spent tens of millions of dollars to defeat him. http://www.theatlanticwire.com/opinions/view/opinion/Afternoon-Vid-Alan-Grayson-… Subtlety isn't one Alan Grayson's better traits. The outgoing Florida Congressman is perhaps best known now as the man who unwisely branded his opponent “Taliban Dan” in a desperate bid to keep his seat. The firestorm surrounding the ill-conceived attack ad managed to prove that even an American electorate hardened to ludricious political advertising knew when a line had been crossed. It also prompted a discussion about whether he was, in fact, “America's Worst Politician.” Now, as he exits Congress, Grayson has lobbed one last salvo at nearly everyone in the GOP. In a slide-show exhibit decrying tax cuts for the rich, the representative tried to rally his colleagues by pointing to the obscene amounts of money that the richest Republicans will likely reap if the Bush tax cuts are extended. In between the slides, he also managed to add slight personal digs to each of the prominent conservatives. Here's a running tally of how he described each Republican: Glenn Beck – The man makes millions from an “ongoing, night by night imitation of Howard Beale from Network” Sean Hannity – (aka “Man of the People”) “Maybe he can go and afford some anger management classes” Bill O'Reilly – “He's No Pinhead” about arguing for tax cuts that only benefit rich people like him. Rush Limbaugh – (aka “the man with the cigar”) Sarah Palin – “She's done a better job of turning fame into cash than anyone in American history” Newt Gingrich – “The man who did such a great job in running America back in the 90's that he want's a second chance this decade. Newt if you do to us what you did to us then, we're going to be in big trouble.” George W. Bush – (aka “the Big Cheese”) “the man who got us into two endless wars, the man who brought us to the brink of national bankruptcy, the man who gave us four dollar a gallon gasoline.” http://www.theatlanticwire.com/opinions/view/opinion/Afternoon-Vid-Alan-Grayson-… added by: navider

Olivia Wilde’s Ass in Flaunt of the DAy

I’ve heard her name before but I never bothered figuring it out. I just assumed she was another pussy the network was packaging to make a lot of money with, because the roster of movies she’s been in are shitty at best, but that’s all changing, she’s gonna be on some Megan Fox kick….but I wasn’t really sure about who Olivia Wilde is. So I did some Wikipedia research and found out this: Her mother, Leslie Cockburn (née Redlich), is a 60 Minutes producer and journalist, and her London-born father, Andrew Cockburn, is an Irish journalist, as are her paternal uncles Alexander Cockburn and Patrick Cockburn, all of whom are contributors to the political website CounterPunch.org. Her sister, Chloe Cockburn, is a civil rights attorney in New York. Her half-aunt was the late writer Sarah Caudwell and her paternal grandfather was the novelist/journalist Claud Cockburn. Through her grandfather, she is also a distant relative of English novelist Evelyn Waugh So I guess it turns out that Olivia Wilde is the attention seeking joke who disappoints her family because she is a failure in their eyes no matter what level of celebrity she has, cuz that’s not what they deem important or actual success….Those are the keepers. Here she is getting naked from some magazine on her quest to be relevant.

Movieline’s Favorite Palin Feud of the Day: Keith Olbermann vs. Bristol

This rarely recurring feature was once called ” Movieline’s Favorite Celebrity Feud of the Day ,” but since all feuds lead through Wasilla nowadays, let’s just change the title accordingly. This week, MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann railed against former Dancing with the Stars finalist Bristol Palin because she still preaches about the effectiveness of abstinence (preaching made difficult by the child in her arms). Calling Bristol the “worst person in the world” was taking it a bit too far, however, and so Bristol replied to Olbermann the way most Palin’s express themselves — with a missive on Facebook .

Grey’s Anatomy Pain Scale: Fishing For Answers

Last night’s Grey’s Anatomy episode, “Adrift and At Peace,” featured the most dramatic line reading of the phrase, “There are no bathrooms out there, you know,” ever featured onscreen. And while yes, there were a few other hokey moments that caused Grey’s viewers chest pain and loss of feeling in their extremities, there were also brilliant moments — like when Cristina made an emotional breakthrough whiling holding a 28-pound trout — in last night’s episode that made viewers re-pledge their loyalty to Seattle Grace. So grab that pain reliever of choice as we wade through this week’s pain readings.
