It’s Time To Tell The Real Story About The People Of Baltimore

Of all the images I have seen of Baltimore’s unrest, the one that strikes me most is of Geraldo Rivera, walking away from a protester saying, “Just talk to me.” Rivera was reporting there for Fox News, though he tries avoiding the young man, walking in a circle as if playing duck, duck goose . As the protester realized, Rivera had made up his mind about these demonstrators long before he arrived. Later, to Sen. Majority Leader Catherine Pugh, he called them “vandals.” Shutting down a conversation before it even begins – that is some of the most harmful behavior I have seen since demonstrations protesting Freddie Gray’s death changed to riots. I live in Atlanta, after having grown up in Frederick, Md., and interned in Baltimore for two years while attending University of Maryland, College Park. So before Rivera arrived in the city, I saw how some friends and acquaintances who lived nearby were acting just as willfully ignorant. “Remind me never to buy property in Baltimore,” an ex said, before I un-friended him on Facebook. It seems far less stressful and complicated to talk at people – like my ex trying to get a laugh – or ignore them as I was doing, than to talk with them. So to see community leaders actively call out major news outlets and their one-dimensional narratives – in Erin Burnett’s case, her insistence on calling protesters “thugs” – has been inspiring and felt important. After all, last week was the first time Baltimore had been covered by national media since The Wire, a show about the city’s plight, wrapped in 2007. When I was originally asked to write about Baltimore, I had a rough sketch of a story in mind. I wanted to talk about seeing the protests from Atlanta, then compare what I saw to one of my defining UMD experiences: a riot on Route 1 following a Maryland-Duke basketball game. The more I watched these protesters speak up, though, the more silly it seemed for me, of all people, to weigh in when I never lived in Baltimore, much less noticed the blue-light cameras in some neighborhoods – what used to be one of the city’s most visible crime-fighting tools. So I decided instead to talk to friends and family with more meaningful relationships to the city – like my friend Katherine, who lived and/or worked there for six straight years before moving to Brooklyn. She was the person who told me about the cameras. “It never gave me the feeling of being safe waiting for the city buses. It was just more like, this is a punishment because you’re not rich and white,” she said. My friend Aamir has lived in Station North for the past year and a half. He spent Monday night watching the news, seeing images of burning buildings but also interviews with kids, peeved that Baltimore built another dog park instead of a rec center. The next day he helped with a clean-up that didn’t appear on TV, though D’Angelo from The Wire showed up. “I always feel like a jerk in those situations because I have to really force myself to go these things – and people just do it,” he says. A friend’s friend, Sean, spent a few days roaming the city and posting to social media about what was happening. When he was in the Army a few years back, he worked as a military police, trained to do what the officers in Baltimore, wearing riot gear, were doing. “Learning how to operate in situations where there is civil unrest was part of my job,” he says. But he also recognized that by simply being among the thousands out and about, police could still see him as another potential cause for trouble. On Thursday, NPR publishes a four-minute story called “Baltimore Unrest Reveals Tensions Between African-Americans and Asians.” Unwittingly my cousin William had provided a response of sorts. On Tuesday night, his Korean godparents asked if he can help out with their store on Edmondson Avenue, because other stores were either closed or burned. They spent their nights there, to ward off other potential looters. “It’s a systemic socioeconomic issue rather than racial like in Ferguson, although all of those things are intertwined,” William writes by email. “Baltimore is a village with a plethora of villages in it. Each village, each hood stay within their boundaries, which is why if you drive in Baltimore, it’s different every five blocks or even block by block.” I understand that from a journalist’s perspective, what my friends told me would provide the basis for, but wouldn’t comprise an entire story. I would need to do a lot of fact-checking. Still, I was struck by how much more illuminating and complex their accounts and opinions were than the sheltered Wolf Blitzer’s – like when Katherine said this: “People who have been protesting, missing class and missing work to participate in these actions love their city too.” Just talk to people, even long after the noise dies down. This is the most useful thing I’ve done all week. I’ve learned more of Baltimore from their stories than from CNN. ===================================================================================================== Christina Lee is an Atlanta-based writer. TMZ is reporting that June is currently in Los Angeles and meeting with producers in hopes of launching a Honey Boo Boo spinoff series. You would think Shannon would jump at the chance to return to television, but apparently, she’s balking at the ideas that have been offered to her so far. The problem? All the producers she’s met with have insisted that her new show use the McDaniel scandal as a jumping off point and focus on the family’s attempts to rebuild its reputation. Amazingly, Mama June ain’t having it and wants the spinoff to pick up where the first show left off, with no mention of the scandal. Given the jaw-dropping lies June told while she was attempting to clear her name, it’s not surprising that she thinks she can pull one over on millions of viewers and pretend like nothing happened. It is surprising, however, that she expects major networks and producers to be her accomplices. 7 June Shannon Interview Bombshells 1. Photographic evidence offered by TMZ and Lee “Uncle Poodle” Thompson suggests otherwise. 4. June Claims She Has Sympathy For McDaniel Because of His Health View Post June revealed that Mark McDaniel is suffering from leukemia. She stated that she feels sympathetic toward her daughter’s molester for that reason. Advertisement A message from our sponsor. 5. True Or False: Did Monique Lose Out On Role In “Empire” Because Hollyweird Had Her Blackballed?

Mo’Nique Claims Lee Daniels Told Her Hollywood Blackballed Her For Not Playing The Game A few years ago Mo’Nique was riding high with a successful daytime talk show and an Oscar win under her belt, but in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter she reveals that she hasn’t had the easiest time getting roles since her win and that “Empire” creator Lee Daniels clued her in on why… Peep the excerpts below: How has the Oscar changed your life? Has it? I get asked that question a lot: How did the Oscar change my life? What it did was that it gave me a new reality. And it let me know that an award wasn’t going to change my life — that I had to be in control of changing my life. I’ll ask you: How do you think the Oscar was supposed to change my life? That it made everyone respect you more — that you’re not a comic who acts but an Oscar-winning dramatic actress. A force to be contended with. And how else do you think it should have changed? More choices, everyone offering you parts? What else do you think it should’ve changed? (Laughs.) You know what I’m looking for. I’m not sure — that it made you happier? Do you think it should have changed things financially? Yes. See? “Yes.” What I understood was that when I won that Oscar, things would change in all the ways you’re saying: It should come with more respect, more choices and more money. It should, and it normally does. Hattie (McDaniel) said, “After I won that award, it was as if I had done something wrong.” It was the same with me. I thought, once you won the award, that’s the top prize — and so you’re supposed to be treated as if you got the top prize. I got a phone call from Lee Daniels maybe six or seven months ago. And he said to me, “Mo’Nique, you’ve been blackballed.” And I said, “I’ve been blackballed? Why have I been blackballed?” And he said, “Because you didn’t play the game.” And I said, “Well, what game is that?” And he gave me no response. The next thing he said to me was, “Your husband is outbidding you.” But he never asked me what [salary] we were asking for. You know, my husband and I had to change things so we wouldn’t have to depend on [others]. So we do it independently. We’re very proud of taking the independent route, and we have a movie coming out on April 24 called Blackbird . What do you think Lee meant when he said that? That I was blackballed? And that your husband was “outbidding you.” What was he referring to? You know what I learned? Never to think what somebody else was thinking. That’s a question you would have to ask Lee Daniels.* There have been people that have said, “Mo’Nique, she can be difficult. Mo’Nique and her husband can be difficult.” They could probably be right. One of the networks said to [Lee] that I was “really difficult to work with.” And I said, “Well, that’s funny, because I’ve never even worked with them, but OK.” Whoever those people are who say, “Mo’Nique is difficult,” those people are either heartless, ruthless or treat people like they’re worthless. And that’s unacceptable. They’re set to say, “Mo’Nique is tactless, she’s tacky.” That’s why I have my beautiful husband, because he’s so full of tact, ’cause I’m a girl from Baltimore. I come from a blue-collar town — and being from that place, you learn not to let anybody take advantage of you. You don’t let people mistreat you. You stand up for what’s right. So I can’t answer why he said I was blackballed. There may be people that feel that way about me. But I respect everyone, from the homeless brother and sister on the street to the executive that sits in the highest office named President Barack Obama. I respect everyone — but we over-respect no one. WELL DAYUM… Props to her on that one. “We over-respect no one.” Does it surprise you to hear Mo’Nique has rubbed some people the wrong way? Mo’Nique also speaks on why she’s hasn’t worked with Lee Daniels since “Precious.” Check out her answer: Did he [Lee Daniels] approach you about maybe being on his hit Fox show Empire? Well, actually, I was offered the role in The Butler that Oprah Winfrey played. I was also approached by Empire to be on Empire. And I was also offered the role as Richard Pryor’s grandmother in [Daniels’ upcoming Pryor biopic]. Each of those things that he offered me was taken off the table. (Laughs.) They all just went away. But that’s just part of the business, you know? I can’t be upset at anybody, ’cause life is too good. It’s just what it is. But you were interested, and the offers suddenly evaporated? For each of the roles, [Lee] called me. He’s always approached me first, and I’m appreciative of it, because I think he is one of the most brilliant visionaries in writing and directing. I’ll say this: Whenever you do see me on TV again, or in the movies, you’ll know somebody played me fairly. People say to me sometimes, “Mo’Nique, you’re trying to be a mogul.” It’s like, honey, by no means am I trying to be a mogul — because mogul stands for “money obsessed guys (or girls), usually lonely.” (Laughs.) I don’t want to be a lonely mogul. No. Yikes. Do you think the lonely mogul comment is her way of firing shots at Oprah perhaps, or Tyler Perry? Do you think Mo’Nique would be good on “Empire”? Do you think she would have been better in “The Butler” than Oprah? Oh and if you think Lee Daniels was letting Mo have the last word you thought wrong. Hit the flip for his response. WENN

Taylor Swift Nude Photos to be Released By Hackers?

Earlier today, Taylor Swift’s Twitter account was compromised by hackers claiming to be associated with Lizard Squad – the same group who famously hacked into the networks of major gaming systems over the holiday season. The hackers immediately began tweeting to Swift’s 70 million followers, encouraging them to follow various accounts associated with Lizard Squad. It seemed fairly harmless at first – as harmless as a forceful invasion of one’s privacy can be, anyway – but then the hackers began threatening to release nude photos of Taylor. Obviously, the incident brings to mind the widespread theft that occurred back in August when nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence and dozens of other female stars were released online.  Taylor took to her Tumblr page today to acknowledge the hacking and admit that she is, indeed, frightened: “Well, now I’m awake,” Taylor wrote. “My Twitter got hacked but don’t worry, Twitter is deleting the hacker tweets and locking my account until they can figure out how this happened and get me a new password. Never a dull moment.” She later updated that her Instagram has now been hacked too, adding, “This is going to be a long day #THIS IS WHY I’M, SCARED OF TECHNOLOGY #WHO’S PARANOID NOW?” Between the theft of nude photos from Kate Upton and so many others over the summer and the recent Sony hacking scandal , online security has been in the news more than ever lately, and it seems that Taylor is the latest victim of cyber-criminals who are more interested in proving a point than making money. It looks as though Taylor’s accounts have been secured, and the hacks are currently being investigated, but a scary moment for the singer and her fans, nonetheless. We’ll have more information on this story as it becomes available. 19 Essential Taylor Swift GIFs 1. Ferguson Protesters Beat White Journalism Student Accused Of Live-Streaming Private Strategy Meeting

Protect ya neck “bro”. Via STLToday Some Ferguson protest strategists turned on one of their own Thursday night, allegedly beating a man they accused of sending out unauthorized video of a meeting at Greater St. Mark Missionary Church in an unincorporated area of north St. Louis County. County police confirmed that they are investigating. The victim, identified as Chris Schaefer, a University of Missouri-St. Louis student, was chased from the church, at 9950 Glen Owen Drive, and beaten outside. He was treated for his injuries at a hospital. He details his story on a website where he asks for donations to cover the cost of his medical care. Patricia Bynes, a stalwart of the protest movement who attended the meeting, blamed members of the group Lost Voices for the attack. “If we’re going to hold police accountable for beating us, we need to hold ourselves accountable for incidents like this,” Bynes said. “I’m not saying all the Lost Voices were involved, but those that weren’t need to get their group under control because they have gotten increasingly violent lately.” Bynes said the meeting at the church was intended to be confidential. Some in the crowd accused Schaefer of using his smartphone to “live stream” the proceedings to the Internet. Gotta be extra careful when you’re an outsider on a cultural safari… In an interview Friday, Bynes described the circumstances. “The meeting started at around 7:30 and I got there a little late and sat down front,’ she said. “I was listening to what was going on and, all of a sudden, somebody yells out, ‘There’s a phone off the hook!’” “Others started repeating it, and then I see some members of the Lost Voices moving towards this young man.” Bynes said the group chased Schaefer outside. “They got him up against the wall. I couldn’t really see what was happening to him but I assumed he was getting beaten up,” she said. Says Schaefer about his attack: In a live stream that Schaefer sent out from the hospital emergency room, he discussed the incident and his injuries. “I was not live streaming at this meeting,” he says in the video, posted online. “I did nothing wrong. I have been a peaceful protester and live streaming, just trying to protect people from getting hurt who are protesting.” “Maybe they thought I was a cop,” he adds, “or they thought I was live streaming something that shouldn’t have been live streamed.” At one point, he holds up his heavily bandaged right hand. “I got hit pretty badly in many different places — my head, my hands, my sides, my stomach, and my legs,” Schaefer says. As to his alleged assailants, Schaefer said, “Unfortunately, there’s always a few bad apples.” We’re pretty sure many of those folks would actually consider Schaefer as a “bad apple”. Ironic. Duck Dynasty Returning With Phil Robertson in 2014; Suspension Lifted By A&E

Despite much controversy over the past two weeks, Duck Dynasty will return on schedule next year, with Phil Robertson an active participant, A&E announced. The company suspended Robertson indefinitely December 18 following controversial anti-gay comments the 67-year-old made in an interview with GQ . Duck Dynasty had been on hiatus when the comments went public; the show is set to return in January and to resume filming new episodes this spring. None of that will change. The network, “after discussions with the Robertson family, as well as consulting with numerous advocacy groups,” says the show will go on. The Robertson family admitted that the anti-gay comments were coarse, but criticized the suspension and implied they would not film without Phil. Since the national controversy erupted, Phil Robertson has been defiant, reiterating his stance on gays , sin and homosexuality at a Bible study group. He has been roundly criticized by gay rights groups, but supporters began demanding his reinstatement and even planning a Chick-Phil-A Day . The network thus found itself in the midst of a PR nightmare, and ultimately decided to distance itself from Phil’s views while still bringing back the show. A&E’s statement on the decision, released Friday, reads: As a global media content company, A&E Networks’ core values are centered around creativity, inclusion and mutual respect. We believe it is a privilege for our brands to be invited into people’s home and we operate with a strong sense of integrity and deep commitment to these principals. That is why we reacted so quickly and strongly to a recent interview with Phil Robertson. While Phil’s comments made in the interview reflect his personal views based on his own beliefs, and his own personal journey, he and his family have publicly stated they regret the “coarse language” he used and the misinterpretation of his core beliefs based only on the article. He also made it clear he would “never incite or encourage hate.” We at A&E Networks expressed our disappointment with his statements in the article, and reiterate that they are not views we hold. Phil Robertson Suspension Lifted But Duck Dynasty is not a show about one man’s views. It resonates with a large audience because it is a show about family… a family that America has come to love. As you might have seen in many episodes, they come together to reflect and pray for unity, tolerance and forgiveness. These are three values that we at A&E Networks also feel strongly about. So after discussions with the Robertson family, as well as consulting with numerous advocacy groups, A&E has decided to resume filming Duck Dynasty later this spring with the entire Robertson family. We will also use this moment to launch a national public service campaign (PSA) promoting unity, tolerance and acceptance among all people, a message that supports our core values as a company, and the values found in Duck Dynasty. These PSAs will air across our entire portfolio . And that’s that. While there may be backlash and protests as a result of its decision, A&E was going to get that regardless, and is standing by its cash cow. Do you think their statement and justification goes far enough? Or did Robertson deserve more than a wrist slap? Comment and vote in our survey below: A&E lifting Robertson’s suspension: Right or wrong?   Right! Glad this ordeal is over with … Wrong! He should be off the air! View Poll »
