Word’s just in over the Movieline transom about what sounds certain to be the feel-good hit of 2013: Sunlight Jr. , the latest gritty indie drama from Sherrybaby director Laurie Collyer. This has everything : Naomi Watts as a pregnant, laid-off convenience-store worker! Matt Dillon as her paraplegic boyfriend! “A generational cycle of poverty and ignorance!” All that’s missing in the press release is an invitation to the inevitable Sundance premiere after-party sponsored by Kleenex. Or Xanax. Or both.

I interview a lot of people at this job — many talented artists on an intellectual spectrum so wide and sometimes with personas so canned and specific that you rarely know from one chat to the next who you’re going to get, or if they’ll even be the same person the next time you meet. That’s not a problem with Roland Emmerich, which is why he might be my favorite interview going right now.

In the upcoming political thriller The Double , Topher Grace and Richard Gere star as an unlikely duo of intelligence agents paired to solve the mystery of a senator’s murder. The twisty plot leads them through a trail involving a psychopathic Soviet assassin (Stephen Moyer), Shakespearean code names and one double (get it) identity that culminates with a surprising ending in screenwriter Michael Brandt’s ( 3:10 to Yuma , Wanted ) directorial debut.

Update: The Dark Knight Rises Will Not Film at Occupy Wall Street

Maybe filming background scenes at Zuccotti Park wasn’t a great idea after all, or perhaps it was never really going to happen, but still: EW reports that Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises , which shoots this month in New York City, will not be using the Occupy Wall Street movement as a backdrop for one-percenter hero Bruce Wayne’s latest shenanigans, despite speculations to the contrary. Probably a good idea, especially after the Occupy movement turned Oakland, CA into something resembling a war zone last night, tear gas and all. [ EW ]

This week’s new feature Anonymous is alluring for two reasons: It explores the possibility that Shakespeare didn’t write his masterworks, and it looks unintentionally hilarious. If I could dress up for Halloween as Vanessa Redgrave’s line-reading of “None of your plays will ever carry your name,” I would. In tribute to this dubious drama, let’s explore what the Bard’s plays would sound like if they were written or retooled by current auteurs. Ready for Why Did I Get Jealous Too ?

REVIEW: Timberlake and Seyfried Make Glamorous Time Bandits in Sleek, Thoughtful In Time

Not even the most enormous movie marketing budget in the world could buy the perfect timing of Andrew Niccol’s In Time , an allegory about the disparity between the rich and the poor in this country that’s so confident it barely even bothers to masquerade as a thriller even though, supposedly, that’s the way to sell tickets. So what if the characters occasionally spout Marxist pamphleteering dialogue like “The truth is, there’s more than enough”? In Time has so much style and energy that it comes across as an act of boldness rather than just a liberal-minded tract, though of course, it’s that too. If there were ever a movie made for the 99 percent, this is it.

Rhys Ifans on Anonymous, Second-Guessing Shakespeare, and the Intimacy of Spider-Man

Quite likely cinema’s first Shakespearean conspiracy thriller-meets-royal romance fable, Anonymous features Rhys Ifans as Edward De Vere — the Duke of Oxford long considered a front-runner for having authored many (if not all) of the plays attributed to William Shakespeare. It’s a role that even the charismatic Welsh actor wasn’t sure he would lock down before encountering director Roland Emmerich, the erstwhile apocalypse visionary whose boldness made a fine complement to Ifans’s own.
