Critic: Midnight in Paris Lied to You

“[T]he veneration accorded to Paris by Americans is puzzling. Like other grand cities, this one certainly has an aura — yet its cultural credentials are hardly the world’s most impressive. If anything, its most enduring characteristic is a distinct whiff of merde de taureau . It wasn’t Paris that delivered Bach, Beethoven, Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Leonardo, Marx, Michelangelo or the Beatles. Instead, the city has given us the likes of bohemianism, deconstructionism, symbolism and the nouvelle vague. All of these were quite fun at the time, but in retrospect seem somewhat less than the real deal. The city’s aesthetic soul appears to have more to do with Gitanes, cafe society and elegant posturing.” Wait — symbolism is over? And Roman Polanski lives there? Sacrebleu! [ The Guardian ]

The Rap Career Is Probably A Wrap: 50 Cent Signs Up For New Movie And Starts Planning His Next Two

Welp. Looks like Bugsy is finally accepting that his rap career will never make it back to what it was in 2008. Via AllHipHop.com : 50 Cent will star in a new action thriller movie titled “The Pursuit,” which will be directed by Jesse Terrero, who has also signed a three-picture deal with the rapper’s Cheetah Vision Films and Emmett/Furla Films. The movie centers around a cop and a criminal, who are teamed together by accident in pursuit of a bank robber who has crossed both men. During the movie, a U.S. Marshal hunts both men to prevent them from killingnthe escaped robber before he is brought back to justice. The movie, which is slated to begin production February 15th in Louisiana, is one of nine films the Cheetah Vision/Emmett Furla partnership will produce this year and one of the ten that will be distributed under a distribution deal with Lionsgate. Emmett / Furla is currently taking advantage of $250 million in funding to produce a slew of movies, including “Broken City” starring Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe and “Frozen Ground” starring John Cusak, Nicolas Cage and Vanessa Hudgens and others. Now if we could just break him and his boo boo Floyd up and teach him to stop picking on Game…

REVIEW: Gosling and Clooney Bring Movie-Star Chops, and Movie-Star Stubble, to The Ides of March

George Clooney’s The Ides of March is an actors’ movie, a picture that gives performers some provocative things to do without necessarily providing a great story for them to hang onto. It’s also a movie made for grown-ups, and Lord knows there are few enough of those around today. But this story of an idealistic young press secretary who finds his principles eroded at the hands of a corrupt Democratic presidential candidate keeps getting in the way of its own chin-stroking: It’s carefully designed to make us think it’s making us think, but in the end, what’s it really telling us? That politics — and politicians — can be dishonest and ugly? Please don’t stop the presses for that one.

Woody Allen Would Totally Cast Michelle Obama in a Movie

“If I was in a room with Michelle Obama, and I thought she was right for a part, I wouldn’t hesitate to ask her.” Woody Allen cast French first lady (and former model-chanteuse) Carla Bruni in a small part as a museum guide in his Midnight in Paris “on a whim” after dining with the President and Mrs. Nicolas Sarkozy. He’d give Mrs. Obama a similar shot, he said on British T.V., if only he met with her first. Sounds like someone wants an invite to the White House! [ USA Today via Onion A.V. Club ]
