Exclusive Video: Guillermo del Toro on Making Mimic an ‘A-Movie’

Years before Guillermo del Toro made a name for himself with dark box office hits like Blade II , Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy , Miramax gave the director a $30 million budget to film the insect horror film Mimic . At the time of its 1997 release, del Toro distanced himself from the studio-manipulated sci-fi flick — about a killer strain of bugs created by a well-meaning entomologist (Mira Sorvino) — but on September 27, Lionsgate releases a director’s cut Blu-ray of which del Toro finally approves. Ahead, find an exclusive clip from one of the Blu-ray’s new features in which the director discusses how he made Mimic an ‘A-Movie.’

Red Dawn Set for 2012 Release, Probably

MGM’ s remake of Red Dawn has been languishing on the shelf for ages now, seeking a new home — and it looks like it found one in FilmDistrict, who is reportedly making a deal to release the film. The action pic, which cast up-and-comers like Chris Hemsworth, Isabel Lucas, Adrienne Palicki, and Josh Hutcherson before theirs stars began rising in the last few years, will likely hit theaters in 2012 featuring the altered plotline involving evil North Korean invaders. Guess Which ‘Scarface’ Cast Member Is Speaking Out Against The New Version Of The Gangsta Classic???

Last week we brought you word that Universal Films is re-creating a new ‘Scarface’. Well, apparently someone from the cult classic cast ain’t wit it!! According to TMZ reports : Say hello to a little controversy — because Robert Loggia (that’s R, as in Robert Loggia) says he’s STRONGLY against the “Scarface” update that’s reportedly in the works. In case you haven’t heard, Universal Pictures is rumored to have started production on a new “Scarface” project that’s being described as an “update” from the 1983 classic. According to reports, the new movie is supposed to contain elements from the ’83 version (man becomes drug dealer, kills a bunch of people, etc.) … but it’s not a sequel or a remake. But Loggia — who played drug lord Frank Lopez in the Al Pacino version — tells TMZ, “Scarface is a classic that should rest in peace! Nuff said!” He may be a haza (if you don’t know what this is we know you’ve never seen the flick), but he’s right about this one!

Trailer: Katherine Heigl is Trouble in One for the Money

It’s probably not a good sign when your movie’s release date is rescheduled twice and eventually kicked back to January, the doom-iest movie month. Unfortunately, that’s the case with the new Katherine Heigl joint One for the Money , which is based on Janet Evanovich’s 1994 novel of the same name. Here are some clues: Heigl drives around with a naked old guy, Sherri Shepherd plays a prostitute who snaps, “I’m hungry,” and Debbie Reynolds accidentally shoots a turkey. Prestige!

9 Milestones in the Evolution of Robert De Niro

In this weekend’s Killer Elite , Robert De Niro plays a special ops vet whose kidnapping sends his former partner Jason Statham out of retirement and into ass-kicking mode. So how did a New York City high school drop-out transform himself into one of our greatest living actors, who, 40-odd years after his film debut, earns applause in second-rate action thrillers for merely appearing onscreen?

Sigourney Weaver on Abduction, Studying Twilight, and Ghostbusters 3

Twilight idol Taylor Lautner may be new to the action hero game — well, at least as a young adult, now that his Shark Boy days are long gone — but he had a seasoned vet by his side on the set of John Singleton’s Abduction : Ellen Ripley herself, Sigourney Weaver. As a therapist to Lautner’s thrill-seeking teenager, who stumbles into the spy game after discovering the truth about his own childhood, she shows her young co-star how it’s done, effortlessly and with grace. But it wasn’t Lautner who studied Weaver’s body of work for pointers; instead, Weaver admitted, it was she who studied Lautner’s work — his work in the Twilight movies.

3 Genres Better Suited to Taylor Lautner’s Talents

I notice something suspicious about the two genres in which Taylor Lautner has made a name for himself: He’s wrong for both of them. As an actor, he’s too stilted for leading romantic roles (a la Eclipse , or even Valentine’s Day ), and he’s too unassuming for leading action roles (as in the new Abduction , where he narrowly avoids poking himself in the eye ). Quite the conundrum. Even if his shirt-losing prowess is second to none, is it possible that Mr. Lautner hasn’t yet discovered the subgenres best suited to his skills? I say yes! Here, Movieline looks into three new arenas for the budding thespian, who undoubtedly does not want to be known as the junior edition of the oversold Sam Worthington .
