Over at Mental Floss , a question was posed yesterday that’s plagued fans of the Back to the Future films for years: “Is it ever explained why Marty hangs out with Doc Brown?” Before long, an official-ish answer surfaced, courtesy of BTTF co-writer Bob Gale. The answer won’t shatter your world, but at least it puts those suggestions of inappropriate older man-teenage boy relations to bed.

Jonathan Levine has directed two feature films ( The Wackness and next month’s 50/50 ) since seeing his 2006 directorial debut, the indie horror pic All the Boys Love Mandy Lane , infamously go from a Weinstein Co. pick-up to a Weinstein Co. cast-off sold to Senator Entertainment, who then went out of business themselves. So what’s the latest status of the Amber Heard starrer (which also features Anson Mount, Whitney Able, and Twilight ‘s Michael Welch)?

Secretary-General Invites Whistleblower to Screen at U.N. Headquarters

It might have taken nearly a year, but United Nations leadership is finally aligning itself with The Whistleblower , the new film based on the experience of a peacekeeper who witnessed U.N. complicity in sex-trafficking in Bosnia in the late ’90s/early ’00s. And while Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon might not yet have clambered aboard the film’s Rachel Weisz awards-season bandwagon, he’s definitely paving its road ahead with an invitation for the film to screen at U.N. headquarters in New York.

Brad Pitt Negotiating to Play Assassin in Adaptation of The Gray Man

According to Variety, Brad Pitt is negotiating to play the title role in the assassin thriller The Gray Man , adapted by Adam Cozad from Mark Greaney’s 2009 novel. The role would see Pitt as Court Gentry, an ex-CIA operative known for his lethal skill who goes on the run after his last job goes wrong, with action taking place across the globe. Could this be Hollywood’s next Bourne -style property?

Spider-Man Villain Rhys Ifans Off the Hook for Comic-Con Brouhaha

Less than a month after a bizarre incident in which The Amazing Spider-Man actor Rhys Ifans was cited for a backstage altercation at Comic-Con , the city of San Diego has declined to press charges: “After reviewing differing witness accounts, our prosecutors concluded there was not sufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt,” a rep for the Attorney’s Office told E! News, leaving Ifans free to pester his true nemesis: Spidey! [ E! Online ]

Talkback: Do Motion-Capture Actors Deserve Oscar Cred?

Andy Serkis brings up an interesting point when he insists that motion-capture acting — a la Rise of the Planet of the Apes — is acting , plain and simple. As the performer, you record movement and voice, much like any conventional thespian, except later someone colors over you with computer voodoo. But does that take anything away from the award-worthiness of a role? Should the Oscars key up their appreciation of this artform?
