Robert Zemeckis Says Bomb Mars Needs Moms Is ‘The Best 3-D Movie Since Avatar’

Disney’s 2011 family adventure Mars Needs Moms wasn’t just a box office disappointment; it was a box office disaster , one of the worst in movie history . Mars producer Robert Zemeckis , appearing at the Philadelphia Film Fest with his latest Oscar-hopeful, Flight , prefers to remember Mars Needs Moms another way: “It’s the best 3-D movie since Avatar .” Zemeckis’s bold answer matched the bold question that prompted his trip down memory lane during Flight ‘s post-screening Q&A session on Saturday night. Following a string of massive career hits ranging from the Back to the Future franchise to Oscar juggernaut Forrest Gump , the Zemeckis-produced Mars Needs Moms opened last year as the filmmaker’s most high profile critical and commercial failure. ImageMovers Digital, the Zemeckis-founded CG house that produced Mars as well as his own films The Polar Express , Beowulf , and A Christmas Carol , was shut down after completing Mars , while plans to embark on a Yellow Submarine pic with Disney were also scrapped; needless to say, it’s probably not Zemeckis’s favorite topic of conversation. (For what it’s worth, Flight , Zemeckis’s Denzel Washington -starring return to live-action film, played well with the Philly crowd.) But one Philadelphia Film Fest attendee was eager for answers. Film critic Martin Schneider penned a reasonably questioning if snarky review of Mars Needs Moms at the time of release, criticizing the film for a slew of offenses ranging from its animation to character development, with particular scrutiny of the film’s “anti-gay,” anti-progressive gender messaging. He seized the opportunity during the Philadelphia Film Fest closing night film event to share how offended he was by the film, asking Zemeckis to explain: What happened ? For his part, Zemeckis didn’t flinch. Prior to the film’s screening, Philadelphia Film Society Executive Director J. Andrew Greenblatt told the audience that the director would be taking questions, and that they could “ask him anything.” It’s tough to say whether or not Zemeckis expected the subject of his history-making bomb to pop up, but when faced by his accuser he kept his cool under pressure, like Denzel’s alcoholic hero Whip Whitaker. And then Zemeckis flew the airplane upside down, so to speak. “It was not marketed properly,” he said of the 3-D CG sci-fi flop, which cost a reported $150 million to make and made back just $38.9 million upon release, becoming the worst Disney performer of all time and one of the most miserable wide release 3-D openings in history. Zemeckis said Mars Needs Moms had been lost in the studio shuffle. He called it “breathtaking.” “It’s the best 3-D movie since Avatar ,” he continued. “It’s the way 3-D should be presented.” Meanwhile, in a career built on crowd-pleasers and after a decade spent attempting to bridge the uncanny valley with CG children’s films, Flight marks only the second film Zemeckis has directed to earn an R-rating. (His first? 1980s’s Used Cars .) Rated R “for drug and alcohol abuse, language, sexuality/nudity, and an intense action sequence,” Flight wasn’t gunning for anything less, given its full-tilt dive into the depths of addiction. “There was no way an adult drama was ever going to be anything other than R-rated,” said Zemeckis. Still, he earned applause with a parting shot at the MPAA: “I hate the ratings system. I think it’s horrible and despicable, and we should get rid of it.” Flight opens nationwide November 2. Hurricane Sandy: The Obligatory ‘Grease’ Meme

Yes, Frankenstorm has a much more ominous and Halloween-friendly ring to it. But the gentler, more goody two-shoes-in-black-leather, more obvious side to Hurricane Sandy and its internet meme potential involves Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta . Do you have chills yet, East Coasters? Are they multiplying ?! And this gem, which wins the meme-off by a mile ( Todd Hale via Jezebel ): The Category 1 hurricane is set to rock the Eastern seaboard tonight into the early week ( tell me about it, stud ) and already has tens of millions of people longing for those bygone summer nights. GROAN! For those of you venturing out in the ‘cane for Halloween, here’s a free costume idea: Combine Olivia Newton-John’s bad-girl blonde curls, hot mama lipstick, and dangling cigarette with a skintight off-the-shoulder trash bag covered in cotton ball clouds and toy cars and hit those Halloween parties as Hurricane Sandy Olsen. Doubles as protective rainwear! In all seriousness, stay safe out there, hurricane pals. How Eli Roth Recruited Amazonian Villagers For ‘Green Inferno’ With ‘Cannibal Holocaust’ & Boats

Eli Roth is going off the grid. For the cannibal pic The Green Inferno , Roth tells Movieline he’s taking a small crew to a remote village up the Amazon River that has “no electricity, no running water, nothing.” Producers recruited many of the 200 native villagers to play extras in the horror film by screening the cult film Cannibal Holocaust . It was the first movie they’d seen in their lives, Roth remarked. “They thought it was a comedy!” Roth was newly arrived from a South American prepping trip for the film when he spoke with Movieline Wednesday in Los Angeles about his work producing RZA’s The Man With The Iron Fists . The Green Inferno marks his first feature since Hostel: Part II , but then Roth’s been busy with a number of projects in the past few years, from acting in and directing a short for Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds , producing films for folks like RZA, Ti West ( The Sacrament ), and Nicolás López ( Aftershock , which Roth also starred in), and directing an episode of Hemlock Grove for Netflix, among other projects. (As if there wasn’t enough stacked on his plate, he also recently opened his Goretorium attraction in Las Vegas.) For The Green Inferno , the tale of ” naive do-gooders ” who run into cannibals when their plane crashes in the jungle (co-written by Roth with Aftershock scribe Guillermo Amoedo), Roth is taking a page out of the Werner Herzog playbook by venturing deep into the Amazon for what he excitedly refers to as “as adventure.” “The location that we found is truly spectacular,” he said. “It’s so far up the Amazon, no one has ever shot there. The last person anywhere near there was Werner Herzog for Aguirre, the Wrath of God .” The village is so remote, in fact, that Roth says locals had never seen a film before. “We said, ‘Can we shoot here?’ and talked to them, and our producers said ‘We have to explain to them what a movie is. They’ve never seen a television,'” Roth recalled. “So we brought a generator and set up a television. I thought they were going to show them E.T. or The Wizard of Oz , but they showed them Cannibal Holocaust to see how much they could handle.” 1980’s Cannibal Holocaust saw director Ruggero Deodato brought up on obscenity and murder charges when authorities at the time believed the graphic human violence depicted onscreen was real. How did Roth’s new acquaintances react? “The villagers thought it was the funniest thing they’d ever seen.” Roth found that his new cast members’ unfamiliarity with film technology was an unpredictable benefit. “Because none of them have ever owned a camera or had any photographs of themselves and no conception of what television or movies are, they’re so natural and relaxed. They’re amazing. They’re not even conscious of what [the camera] is doing to them. I have a whole village full of kids that are funny as hell that will have cameras all over and not even think twice about it. They don’t get nervous, nothing.” Deodato himself drew criticism for depicting actual animal deaths onscreen, but another controversial film of the era shot on location with locals, the Italian slavery pic Goodbye Uncle Tom ( a reference point for Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Django Unchained ), came under fire for hypocritically exploiting the Haitian actors in its cast. Perhaps a stretch, but I asked Roth about the ethics of tapping an entire village to play natives, using the Goodbye Uncle Tom lesson as exploitation cinema’s most notorious example. ” Goodbye Uncle Tom is a pretty brutal movie about slavery where you show corks being pulled out of guys’ asses and babies being hosed down,” he answered, giving it some thought. “No, because we’re giving these people a boat,” Roth explained. “They have no contact with the outside world and we’re giving them a motorboat — that’s the deal. And we’re giving them medical supplies and school supplies, so they’re ecstatic. The one thing they need is a boat. They were like, ‘This will literally change our lives.'” Roth begins filming The Green Inferno in two weeks. Stay tuned for our full interview for The Man With The Iron Fists , out November 2. Idris Elba A Possible Heir To James Bond Role

Speculation is mounting in the U.K. over who will take over the reins as 007 post- Daniel Craig . Bond girl Naomie Harris delivered a bit of a news flash, saying that the next 007 may be Idris Elba . If so, the star of The Wire and films Prometheus and Thor would become the first non-Caucasian James Bond in his eternal 50 years. Harris hinted that Elba met with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli about the possibility. Even if he is the eventual heir, he would have plenty of time to hone in on his 007 skills. Current Bond incarnate Daniel Craig has signed on for at least two more rounds as the virile British spy. “I didn’t realize that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idris and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond,” she told Huffington Post. “And I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he’s a great guy.” Idris alluded to the role earlier this year, saying he wouldn’t want to be identified as the ‘black’ James Bond. “I don’t want to be the black James Bond. Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond, so if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.” At 44, Daniel Craig said he doesn’t want to carry the 007 mantle beyond his years and said the time will come when he has to step out of the part. “I am not going to outstay my welcome. Someone else will have to have the chance to have a crack at this,” he said. The latest Bond pic Skyfall opens in early November in the U.S. [ Sources: Yahoo! Movies U.K. , Huffington Post ]

Elizabeth Taylor Reigns As Top Earning Dead Celebrity

They’re the one percent even in immortality. Elizabeth Taylor reigns as the biggest earner in Forbes Magazine’s list of Top-Earning Celebrities, even out-ranking her BFF in life, Michael Jackson . But she may not stay atop the deceased heap for long since most of that bundle came from a record-breaking Christie’s auction that cha-chinged $184 million, mostly from the star’s fabled jewelry collection. Still, Taylor is a tour-de-force beyond the grave, reaping cash from her ongoing fragrance White Diamonds, which took in a cool $75 million in 2011. Taylor was a shrewd business-woman in life, negotiating a 10% stake in all of her films post- Cleopatra . That film incidentally was the most expensive at its time, with a $44 million production budget back in the early ’60s (ouch) and Liz was one of the highest paid stars of the time. But, minus the estate sale, the self-styled King of Pop may edge out his celebrity idol in the years to come. Michael Jackson’s estate owns a huge stake in Sony’s ATV catalog, which includes artists like The Beatles, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga. The estate even earns cash from the Cirque Du Soleil show The Immortal Tour . The total amounted to $90 million, far out-ranking the ever-present Elvis Presley who took in $55 million. Peanuts creator Charles Schulz placed fourth with $37 million. They’re the ninth most lucrative entertainment franchise, according to Forbes, grossing $2 billion a year globally in retail. Schulz’s dollar prospects are looking even brighter in the future with the recent announcement that a new Peanuts movie is in the works, courtesy of Fox’s animated division, Blue Sky. That film is set for 2015. And reggae superstar Bob Marley ranked fifth with $17 million last year. His holdings include a Marley beverage company, which sells Marley’s Mellow Mood, marketed as a relaxation drink and a House of Marley set of headphones. Others in the list are John Lennon ($12 million), Marilyn Monroe ($10 million), Albert Einstein ($10 million), Dr. Seuss creator Theodor Geisel ($9 million), Steve McQueen ($8 million), Bettie Page ($8 million), song writer Richard Rogers ($6 million). First ‘Iron Man 3’ Trailer: What Do You Think?

Tony Stark is struggling to hold it together in the first trailer for Iron Man 3 , and that’s before Ben Kingsley as conveniently and ambiguously-ethnic baddie The Mandarin enters the picture with his samurai hair and his even more ambiguous weirdo accent. Then it’s bye bye Stark mansion and hello waking nightmare as Tony’s world unravels. “Nothing’s been the same since New York ,” he sighs. “I can’t sleep… and when I do, I have nightmares.” Air-attacks crumbling that sweet Malibu pad into the Pacific and being haunted by an Iron Man doppelganger are freaky enough, but the saddest sight in our first glimpse at Iron Man 3 has to be the image of Stark crawling into bed alone, Iron Man parts strewn across the floor like an addict’s discarded syringes. Five bucks the line “It’s like I don’t even know you” or “I can stop whenever I want!” are uttered somewhere in this movie. Trailer debut via Apple iTunes : Dynamic action, a hint of self-destruction, Guy Pearce’s clean-shaven and therefore supremely threatening mug (what’s more rage-inducing if you’re Tony Stark – Pearce kissing your lady on the cheek, or your competition from another dude in a magical flying suit?)… I’d venture to say it seems like Shane Black is back. Let’s hope. Synopsis: Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Iron Man 3 is in theaters May 3, 2013.
