New Company Sells Invasive Carp Back To Asia As Food

An Illinois fishing company is helping to tackle the Asian carp invasion by marketing them as a delicious culinary treat to food companies in China. Big River Fish Company, based in Pearl, Illinois, decided that instead of lamenting the way that Asian carp were taking over Great Lakes fishing areas, they would turn it into a profitable business opportunity. Achieving sizes of up to 4-feet in length and 100 pounds each, carp destroy ecosystems by gorging themselves, and starving out other species. Ross Harano, the international marketing director for Big River Fish Co., said that by marketing the fish as “wild” and “unpolluted” they've be able to attract attention of high-end restaurants looking to augment their fish selection. Of course, the Great Lakes are home to their fair share of pollution, but they're relatively clean when compared to Chinese waters. In June, the Associated Press reported that, for the first time ever, a 20-pound bighead carp was caught by a fisherman in Illinois's Lake Calumet, on the South Side of Chicago–beyond the electric fences meant to keep them out, and only six miles from Lake Michigan. The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation recently pledged $500,000 to find environmental solutions to prevent this ravenous species from threatening the Great Lakes' ecosystem and jeopardizing the region's $7 billion annual sports fishing industry. The Big River Fish Company recently received $2 million in federal funding to expand its processing plant after securing a contract with a company in China for 30 million pounds of carp meat (NPR). http://www.care2.com/causes/environment/blog/new-company-sells-invasive-carp-bac… added by: Radical_Centrist

Story of the Century? NASA May Announce Thursday to Have Found Life on Saturn’s Moon Titan

NASA is holding a press conference on Thursday “to discuss an astrobiology finding.” Are they going to announce that they've found evidence of extraterrestrial life? Blogger Jason Kottke took a look at NASA's press release, which touts “an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life” (astrobiology, besides being a cool word, is “the study of the origin, evolution, distribution and future of life in the universe”), and decided to investigate further by looking at the participants' resumes. So who are the participants? A geobiologist who's written about “geology and life on Mars”; An oceanographer who's done extensive work on arsenic-based photosynthesis; A biologist examining Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, and its similarities to early Earth; And an ecologist investigating the “chemistry of environments where life evolves.” Now, yes, obviously, throw in a grizzled marine and you've got the making of an awesome movie about discovering aliens. But that's not (the only reason) why Kottke thinks the announcement will be about life on another world. Here's what he says: So, if I had to guess at what NASA is going to reveal on Thursday, I'd say that they've discovered arsenic on Titan and maybe even detected chemical evidence of bacteria utilizing it for photosynthesis (by following the elements). Or something like that. (thx, sippey) Of course, the announcement could be something totally different! Or, it could be that NASA has been contacted by a warlike race of space aliens and a certain-to-fail mission carried out by a ragtag bunch of scientists is our only hope of survival. The picture, by the way, is the sun reflecting off a lake on Titan, “the only place in our solar system beyond Earth known to have liquid on its surface.” HOW COOL IS THAT?! Space, guys! France, Ireland and Hungary seize pensions to fill "short-term deficits"

France is apparently following the example of Ireland and Hungary and seizing pension funds. According to eFinancialNews, the French parliament passed a law last week allowing 36 billion Euros to be seized from the French reserve pension fund to be used to pay off the debts of France’s welfare system. As eFinancialNews notes: “The move reflects a willingness by governments to use long-term assets to fill short-term deficits, including Ireland’s announcement last week that it would use the country’s €24bn National Pensions Reserve Fund “to support the exchequer’s funding programme” and Hungary’s bid to claw $15bn of private pension funds back to the state system.” There have been unsubstantiated rumors for years that the American government will also seize 401(k) money. added by: maasanova

Eternal Youth Potion Discovered

Harvard University researcher Ronald A. DePinho has discovered a way to reverse age degeneration for the first time. His experiments on mice have demonstrated that you can return individuals to a younger state, with new growth on brain and improved fertility. While scientists knew about the role of telomerase—an enzyme that adds DNA sequence repeats at the end of chromosomes—in body decadence and experiments were made with extremely simple organisms, this is the first time that this breakthrough has been achieved in complex mammals. While it's not human testing, this discovery could be an amazing weapon to fight Alzheimer and other degenerative diseases. According to DePinho: We wanted to know: If you could flip the telomerase switch on and restore telomeres in animals with entrenched age-related disease, what would happen? Would it slow down aging, stabilize it, or even reverse it? It was akin to a Ponce de Le

Most Support DADT Repeal, But Tea Party Opposed

A survey released Monday finds strong support for allowing openly gay and lesbian soldiers to serve in the military, but key groups that traditionally support Republicans oppose the idea. The survey, conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press and the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, shows that 58% of adults favor allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly, whereas 27% said they opposed allowing it. A majority of both men and women, as well as both Democrats and independents also support allowing open service. Currently, gays and lesbians are permitted to serve in the military under the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy only if they do not publicly reveal their sexuality. According the poll, Republicans are divided on whether to allow open service by gays and lesbians — 40% of Republicans favor it and 44% oppose. Perhaps as important, key groups likely to have an influence on Republican policies are even more opposed to allowing open service. The Pew report notes that among those who said they “agree with the Tea Party” only 38% favor and 48% oppose allowing open servece. Similarly, only 34% of white evangelical Protestants favor and 48% oppose allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly. Lack of Republican support could prevent the Obama administration from ending the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy, especially if Congress doesn't vote on ending the policy before the end of this year's lame-duck session. Ending the policy during a lame-duck session may not be popular even if a majority do support repeal, however — a recent McClatchy Company poll by Marist College found that registered voters were divided on repealing the policy during the current Congress, with 47% saying the current Democratic Congress should repeal the policy and 48% saying they should not repeal it “so they continue to serve but not openly.” Another recent poll by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal found that 50% of adults supported allowing open service but 48% either supported continuing the current policy or not permitting service at all when explicitly offered those options. The Pew poll was conducted Nov. 4-7 among 1,255 adults, and had a 3.5% margin of error. Results among subgroups have a higher margin of error. added by: TimALoftis

Classic Bump n’ Grind: The Old Time Burlesque

Long before strippers started twirling on shiny brass poles in G-strings, men would get goofy watching women twirl their pasties at the old-timey burlesque shows. America’s big cities often had dozens of burlesque theaters that featured bodacious babes in barely-there costumes, at least until prudish city officials started banning the shows. But with the neo-burlesque movement coming back into vogue, and with Christina Aguilera and Cher co-starring in the new movie, “Burlesque”, here’s a fond look back at the heyday of burlesque. This piece includes a number of high resolution vintage black-and-white photographs, a slide show and two musical documentary short films. http://disembedded.wordpress.com/2010/11/29/classic-bump-n-grind-the-old-time-bu… added by: disembedded

Plutonomy: Rich Get Richer With Government On Their Side

Throwing A Wrench Into The System

The electoral process has been hijacked by corporations. The judiciary has been corrupted and bought. The press shuts out the most important voices in the country and feeds us the banal and the absurd. Universities prostitute themselves for corporate dollars. Labor unions are marginal and ineffectual forces. added by: joeeddy
