For the first time since September 11, 2001, a national hero returned to the site of our nation’s most horrific crime today, 13 years after terrorists took the lives of over 3,000 American citizens. Say hello to Bretagne. This 15-year-old golden retriever is the last surviving rescue dog from that awful day, and she walked the memorial site this morning with her handler, Denise Corliss. “After 9/11, everybody – all of us, felt such sadness,” Corliss told NBC’s Tom Brokaw. “We all wanted to help. I just felt so honored that we were able to respond. I really believed we could find somebody – anybody, if we could just get to the right void space. But our reality was much different.” In 2001, Bretagne worked 12-hour shifts in which she scoured the debris for trapped survivors and then also visited the courageous firefighters, physicians and police officers who were doing similar heroic work. “You’d see firefighters sitting there, unanimated, stone-faced, no emotion and then they’d see a dog and break out into a smile,” Dr. Cindy Otto, a veternatian who cared for search dogs at Ground Zero. “Those dogs brought the power of hope. They removed the gloom for just an instant, and that was huge because it was a pretty dismal place to be.” Since 9/11, Bretagne and Corliss have dedicated their time to other disasters areas – such as Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Ivan. Bretagne retired from search and rescue work at age 9, but she still visits schools to assist first-graders and special needs kids learn how to read aloud. Chardon High School shooter T.J. Lane has escaped from prison along with another inmate. Lane shot and killed three of his classmates in 2012 and was serving a life sentence in the Allen County Correctional Institution in northwestern Ohio. Lane further shocked the nation during his trial, when he appeared in court wearing a t-shirt with the word “killer” written across it, and gave the middle finger to the victims’ families as he was sentenced. At this time, authorities have not released any information as to how Lane escaped, but he is believed to be on foot in the Lima, Ohio area. Lane murdered Daniel Parmertor, 16, Russell King, Jr., 17 and Demetrius Hewlin, 17 on February 27, 2012. A fourth victim – Nick Walczak, also 17 – was shot several times but survived. Walczak is still confined to a wheelchair. Lane, 19, escaped with the aid of fellow inmate Clifford E. Opperdud, 45. Authorities are currently searching the area immediately surrounding the prison, and have cautioned Lima residents not to pick up hitchhikers or allow strangers into their homes. Prison officials alerted state and local police to the escape at 8 pm on Thursday. We’ll keep you updated on this story as it develops.

The duo married the day after he was indicted on domestic violence charges, which earned him a wrist slap from the NFL in a controversial decision. An earlier video (below) showed Rice dragging his unconscious fiancee on the floor after the fight, but the true nature of the attack was not seen until Monday. Yesterday, Rolling Stone released excerpts from an interview in which Taylor Swift admitted her song “Bad Blood” was written about a musical rival. The Internet instantly set about speculating as to who Taylor could’ve been so upset with (aside from her many ex-boyfriends) that she devoted an entire track of her forthcoming album to talking trash. Taylor’s quotes were picked apart for clues, and her history was examined by fans hoping to piece together the identity of her professional rival. Turns out the answer may have been under our noses and on our Twitter feeds all the while: Just hours after Taylor’s quote went public, Katy Perry tweeted, “Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing,” a reference to the villainous manipulator from the 2004 film Mean Girls . We’d say it might just be a coincidence, but there’s far more evidence that Katy is the latest celeb to be the subject of one of Taylor’s famous musical burns: In the interview, Taylor says the unidentified rival tried to “sabotage an entire arena tour” by essentially stealing Swift’s staff. Last year – right about the time Taylor says the incident took place – three of Swift’s backup dancers reportedly left to join Perry’s world tour.
