We all know Oreos are addictive, but a new study suggests that the cookies are as addicting as actual drugs … at least in the way the brain responds to them. The “pleasure center” of the brain, the nucleus accumbens, apparently gets just as activated in response to Oreos as it does to cocaine and morphine. Oreos: Addictive! That could certainly have some pretty major public health implications if Oreos were as damaging to one’s system as the aforementioned narcotics. They’re not, of course, and the study was only done in rats. However, the Connecticut College authors say it’s likely relevant to humans as well. It could explain, they say why people have such a hard time resisting eating an entire sleeve of the cookies after they’ve set out just to eat one. The study, to be presented at the Society for Neuroscience’s annual conference, also claims that rats, like humans, like to eat Oreo’s creamy center first. To test how the animals responded to Oreos vs. drugs, the team trained mice to navigate a maze. On one side, Oreos were provided. On the other? Rice cakes. As you’d guess, the rats were more likely to spend time on the Oreo side. Rats treated with morphine or cocaine rather than Oreos reacted similarly. They found that regardless of what “substance” the rats were offered (Oreos, coke, or morphine) they spent about the same time on the “drug” side. “Our research supports the theory that high-fat/high-sugar foods stimulate the brain in the same way that drugs do,” professor Joseph Schroeder said. “It may explain why some people can’t resist these foods,” he added, echoing a common refrain, “despite the fact that they know they are bad for them.” The research may thus bear some relevance to public health issues, namely the fact that high-calorie foods are often low-priced and highly addictive. And the fallout from poor eating behaviors can be as dramatic as that from drugs, said the authors, even if the risk of death from one usage is lower.

Efron talked about the movie during a fan Q&A in Culver City yesterday and said of the comedy: “The movie was about girls and friends and relationships and [shows] kind of how our lives are, so I think we knew a lot about it and I think we had almost too much fun. Back in July, the Wallis family was visiting relatives in Chesterfield, Missouri when their Golden Retriever ran away. The St. Louis natives believed they would never see Honey again. But technology is a wonderful thing and Emily Wallis told St. Louis’ KTVI that she received a shocking phone call three months after Honey went missing: she was found 600 miles away in LaGrange, Georgia! The canine was eventually found by an animal shelter that checked for a microchip and tracked down the Wallis once it discovered one in Honey’s neck. As for the tearful, tail-wagging reunion? Jenny McCarthy is not going anywhere, ABC viewers. Following just over a month as co-host on The View , this bubbly blonde’s job status was called in to question this week when Radar Online quoted an anonymous production source who claimed producers were unhappy with McCarthy. Jenny McCarthy on The View “ABC has begun doing deep research on Jenny’s work on the show and the initial findings are that viewers want to tune out the second she opens her mouth!” the report alleged. “The data has revealed that she is far more off-putting Elisabeth.” But while it is true some critics have questioned giving McCarthy such a platform due to her anti-vaccination beliefs (the words ” homicidal maniac ” have been used to describe her), it is NOT true that she’s on the outs. HOWEVER, the numbers don’t back up the claim that The View is suffering in McCarthy’s presence. It is averaging just over three million viewers per episode this season, which is a tick below its previous season numbers. E! Following rumors that sprang up last week about her and Theo Wenner doing the nasty together, insiders tell Radar Online that Cyrus is “definitely dating” the Rolling Stone magazine hair. Theo Wenner: Dating Miley Cyrus? “Miley talks about how hot Theo is and how nice he’s been to her,” a source alleges. “She’s definitely completely in lust with him.” Definitely. Completely. Let there be no doubt about it. The Washington association that lobbies for lobbyists feels the group needs some rebranding and wants to change its name to nix the word “lobbyists.” The leaders of the American League of Lobbyists say their work has evolved, and members do lots more than troll Congress to try to shape legislation. They’re into grassroots organizing and public affairs, they say and other sorts of politics and advocacy. In short, they’re not simply lobbyists anymore! But as professionals, they know that reputation matters, and theirs stinks (see above). They poll only slightly better than U.S. Congress these days. “Everybody has a misconception that lobbyists are walking around with a pocketful of cash and that’s it,” said Monte Ward, the group’s president. Ward says, “The new brand will seek to fully represent the broad range of responsibilities that a government relations professional practices daily.” They narrowed the new name down to The Association of Government Relations Professionals or The National Association of Government Relations Professionals. Edgy stuff, we know. The board of directors had some tense discussions, and there were a few early October focus groups to test the waters on this. On Monday, the board finalized its decision. Ward will ask members to approve the switch to the Association of Government Relations Professionals. The board also approved a new tag-line: “Voice of the Lobbying, Public Policy, and Advocacy Professions. Members will have 30 days to vote. The group’s bylaws require two-thirds approval before the name can be changed, but we’re guessing this lobbying effort will be nearly unanimous. Congress may want to follow suit if the shutdown ever ends.
