Is Moneyball the Next Social Network?

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: A popular non-fiction book — without any real cinematic leanings — gets turned into a buzzed-about feature film with the help of Aaron Sorkin, Scott Rudin, Michael De Luca, and Sony Pictures. Nope, not The Social Network — Moneyball ! ESPN writer Jon Weisman (formerly of Variety) makes the case that the Bennett Miller-directed film could be a sleeper hit next fall along the lines of The Social Network and that other Michael Lewis penned sports-book-turned-movie, The Blind Side . Probably not, but, hey, Brad Pitt is in it! So, maybe? [ ESPN ]

As Director Fights to Call Movie Untitled 3-D Shark Thriller, Here Are Literal Title Ideas for 11 More Movies

Apparently director David Ellis’ victory with the Snakes on a Plane title just wasn’t enough. Now the director has hit the internet with a campaign to title his upcoming 3-D shark thriller… Untitled 3-D Shark Thriller . As the director tells it , “The title says everything you need to know: ‘We’ve got sharks.’ ‘It’s in 3D.’ and, ‘It’s a thriller.'” Fair enough! In honor of what will surely become a hot Hollywood trend, let’s see how some other upcoming movies fare with literal, reductive titles.

Game: Match the ‘Big’ One-Word Theme to the Film of the Best Director Nominee

Looks like reduction is the name of the game today! Variety has just asked all five Best Director nominees to sum up their entire film with a one word theme. Well, all of the nominees except David Fincher, who, true to form , had his editors chime in instead. Anyway, just to get your brains fired up in the morning, take a shot at matching each one word theme to the films, which actually have quite a bit overlap… you know, when they are reduced to one word.

The Wicker Tree Trailer: More Nudity, Fire and Animal Masks in Sequel to Original Wicker Man

These days, The Wicker Man probably makes many think of derisive laughter, elated confusion and Nicolas Cage getting attacked by bees . But the original 1973 cult film still holds up as a chilling, uncomfortably funny horror movie about the power of fear, desperation and faith. Its director Robin Hardy has been struggling for years to make a companion-piece, and now, more than 30 years later, the trailer for The Wicker Tree has arrived. Those scared of naked women wearing horse masks may want to look elsewhere today. Ah yes, it’s probably NSFW.

DVD: Get Your Ozon On with Hideaway

One of the most-anticipated movies among what’s left of this country’s audience for foreign films is the corporate comedy Potiche , starring Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu and directed by François Ozon. And while Ozon is a big deal in his home country of France, his films generally get noticed Stateside only when they feature big names like Charlotte Rampling ( Swimming Pool ) or Isabelle Huppert (who stars alongside Deneuve and six other towering stars of French cinema in 8 Women ). If you haven’t already discovered the greatness of Ozon, start with Hideaway (Le Refuge) , out on DVD this week from Strand Releasing Home Entertainment.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Will Get Married in Two Dimensions

Sad news for fans of over-hype: The royal family will not allow Rupert Murdoch to broadcast the already over-hyped wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 3-D, despite the fact that the Murdoch-owned Sky News has the ability to do so. “I’m afraid I have to say that we have decided not to progress with 3-D coverage of the service on this occasion,” said Prince Charles’ press secretary in a statement. (Any chance her name is Moneypenny?) Fingers crossed for a crappy post-conversion 3-D DVD release spearheaded by M. Night Shyamalan. [ NYO ]

The Music Never Stopped Trailer: J.K. Simmons Wants You to Turn Down that Racket

Aw man, another movie about some guy who gets a brain tumor only to be nursed back to his former self through music by Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead? Okay fine, we have probably actually never seen this plot in a Sundance Dramedy, but by the end of the trailer for The Music Never Stops it’s pretty clear that this is just a backdrop for an father (J.K. Simmons) reconnecting with his estranged son (Lou Taylor Pucci), which might explain why it all feels so familiar.
